The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion:
"Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn."
The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.
"Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!" With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder.
"Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four
hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.
But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives.
Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix," he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist.
Shaine continues, saying, "Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation."
Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, "Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on.
A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen."
Master Shaine hops to his feet. "Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well."
With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.
-----------------------------------
Here's the time to get aquainted before setting off.
Lebrario Hantwell |
A plain looking man sips a drink, and looks at the roof when Master Shaine does his speech.
History was made.. now maybe it's my time to be a part of the Pathfinders history.
We will try to not disappoint your faith in us, Master Shaine. Miss Janira, a pleasure to make your acquaintance. What can you tell us about your first trip there and the gillmen?
Chyrone |
"As i was saying, i had my confirmation during me seeing the gillmen enter. It was dark and mysterious, to put it simple, i hadn't had time to thoroughly start exploring the caves, i've only explored a little.
As for gillmen; they are a humanoid race much like humans save for the three piscine gills on both sides of their necks. They’re a little secretive but not outright hostile. Most live in or near the water."
Nithrandyl Eikrekkr |
A thin but tall elf walks in dressed in a brown tunic with brown silken robe and a dusty brown cloak. He is armed with an odd looking spear. He listens to the briefing and then begins muttering to himself under his breath. After the breifing concludes he says to the others in attendance..."Allo my name is Nithrandyl, woodland mage. I shall journey with you all."
Tsschas Blackfang |
The next entry isn't what one would expect as a reptilian humanoid walks in.
Armed with spears arrayed on its back akin to a fan and a longspear in hand, this lizard looks up with no malice but instead attempts a smile, showing multiple sharp teeth with one blackened fang.
"Greetingss. I'm Tsschas Blackfang. A warrior of the Blackfang and participant in this hunt. Itss a pleassure to meet you all."
Inclining its head towards everyone present.
"My common is good?"
Mykel Therinor |
I have heard a lot worse, Tsschas. I am Mykel Therinor, and I hope to live up to and exceed any expectations during this expedition.
Mykel is a tall lanky figure, his falcata riding on his hip, buckler sitting ready on his arm.
Nithrandyl Eikrekkr |
Nithrandyl looks at the two newcomers and wonders if they are twins...
Tsschas Blackfang |
lol what? twins? serious crossbreeding there.
Chyrone |
There's still the 5ft to check in.
Janira: "And so, do any of you have any questions?
If not...does everybody have some essentials?
Lightsources, food, rope are good to have. These might too.." she holds up a semi-transparant flask that has an acidic icon on it.
"Something against large quantities of vermin or snakes."
Mykel Therinor |
Aye, those I have...only the one flask of this fire stuff...a bit expensive on my current budget...but hopefully that will change. Not that I'm a money grubbing sellsword...far from it....I'm just...indepepndent now....overhead is a burden at times...
Chyrone |
I just noticed two PCs with the same portrait, what are the odds. I blame fatigue from not sleeping when i should. I spent the majority of the evening sleeping, plus the night.
Okay then, off we go.
On your way, the terrain becomes variant, with both forest and rough terrain blending eventually.
Janira: "I'd like to know, how much do you guys know of Kortos?"
-------------------
At the center of the Isle of Kortos stand the Kortos Mounts, the points on the island
Entire tribes of centaurs, harpies, and minotaurs constantly vie for territory up and around the Mounts, with harpies being the most common at higher altitudes and centaurs controlling the lower slopes and foothills.
Also known as the Low Azlanti, the gillmen are an amphibious humanoid race believed to be the last descendants of the ancient Azlanti people.
During Earthfall, the Starstone struck Golarion and destroyed the human empires of Thassilon and Azlant. It is said that gillmen’s ancestors survived the cataclysmic event because they received the blessing of an aquatic entity that allowed them to breath underwater.
Most scholars believe the terrifying aboleths were responsible for the gillmen’s transformation. Any alliance between them appears to have fallen apart over the millennia, however, and the gillmen are now an independent people.
---------------------
Mykel Therinor |
taking 10 on know. Geo...so 10...lol
Other than the big mountains in the middle...I don't know a thing. I'm here to expand my horizons and explore the world...
Nithrandyl Eikrekkr |
"My academic interests lie in the natural and arcane world."
Tsschas Blackfang |
"Nothing unfortunately. I come from the Dragon lands and know little to nothing about these other lands."
Hefting his own small travelling pack, he smiles.
"I do believe I have all the things I need here."
The Dandy Hobo |
Dandy knows he's the better looking of the two... and that's it.
I'm a bit more surprised about the dual avatars in this game; I had it happen another time, but that was because that PC and the other were both tengu and there's only a couple to choose from...
I can choose another if necessary GM
Tsschas Blackfang |
I think it's fine, I once joined a game with 4 similar avatars. It was hilarious. They actually jokingly blamed me for not following the theme.
Chyrone |
Now that you mention it, i was in a Quest for Perfection trilogy game. The two other halflings chose the iconic halfling character, just 2 different versions. The GM was thankful i didn't.
@ Dandy, it's fine.
@ All, combat maps linked under my name. You can all move your tokens.
1d6 ⇒ 4
Dandy Hobo: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Lebrario: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Mykel: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Nithrandyl: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Tsschas: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Wolves: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Coming upon more dense forest, there's a slight growling.
It comes to no surprise these forests have denizens, but you notice 2 wolves from different angles.
Wolves, round 1

Tsschas Blackfang |
Tsschass sets his spear ready to Pierce the first wolf that comes towards him.
Readied action to attack.
The Dandy Hobo |
"You knavish beast! Have at thee!", Dandy pulling out his whip and preparing it for one of the oncoming wolves.
Move action to pull out whip, standard action to ready a trip at the first wolf that gets within 10' of Dandy.
Trip @ first wolf that approaches within 10': 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Well I have A alchemists' fire. Of course I'm glad not to test it.
Chyrone |
Shortbows go for 60ft range, so just outside rather.
Wolves, round 1
Tsschas sets ready his (short?) spear.
Mykel shoots an arrow at blue, but it ends up flying over the lupine's head.
Dandy takes out his whip.
-----------
Wolves:
Blue quickly closes in, but Dandy's whip makes it fall flat.
Green closes in and comes up to Tsschas.
Make that readied roll my friend, teach the lupine a lesson.

Lebrario & Nithrandyl
Tsschas Blackfang |
Swarms?? I would have thought level one wouldn't encounter them unless one of them is a level 2.......Also my weapon is a long spear.No GO Away Attack! 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 241d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Confirming the GO Away Crit! 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 82d8 + 8 ⇒ (8, 4) + 8 = 20 Figures.
Chyrone |
Oh no, a swarm is in the list of potential enemies to encounter here. It's just that they opted to play 2nd tier. One of theirs is lvl 2, but others of lvl 1 agreed on the case of 'the fights are easy on lvl 1'.
So be it, me thinks. :)
Tsschas deals a heavy blow to the wolf, it practically being skewered, leaving it barely standing.
Lebrario & Nithrandyl
Nithrandyl Eikrekkr |
earlier
Nithrandyl observes the wolves to see if something is wrong with them at first...
K. Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
And as they approach he reluctantly looks for a clear angle for aim at the blue wolf and raises his branched spear pointing it at the wolf and speaks in a strange tongue Sylvan
"నేను మీమీద ముళ్ళు నటించారు!"
a thorned shortspear springs from his elven spear and flies at the wolf...
Splintered Spear: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15...DMG: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 +1 point of bleed per round if it hits
Tsschas Blackfang |
Brave Men. I hope they have a way to deal with swarms.
Mykel Therinor |
might have miscounted range....i pooched the roll so bad it didn't matter...lol. I hope i'm not being presumptous, but it looks like Mykel is up next....just dont want to hold the game up.
Mykel drops his bow and draws his blade. He strides forward and his blade arcs toward the wolf, seeking a soft spot.
attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 81d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
cannot move token atm...on my phone...I am targeting the green wolf
Chyrone |
Brave Men. I hope they have a way to deal with swarms.
Indeed, the good news is they've almost killed them both, as well as a giant flea. The bad news, from the three of those who were swarmed, 2 have been harmed badly and 2 have fallen ill. Such is life for the gambling PCs.
Librario's stone would normally hit, but the wolf laying flat proves an obstacle.

Wolves, round 2
Mykel makes a swing at the green wolf, seeking to end its hostility.
The aim is a little off, resulting in a low growl.

Tschass sidesteps slightly to his right, giving him ample room to thrust his spear's point towards the wolf.
Poke w/ L.Spear 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 51d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 it was bound to happen.
The Dandy Hobo |
The wolf tripped, Dandy pulls out a blade from a cane attached to his backpack. "And now I shall stab at thee!"
Cane sword @ prone blue wolf: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage on hit: 1d6 ⇒ 6
But Dandy is too gentlemanly to strike at a downed target after all, even a ravenous beast.
Chyrone |
Apparently so.
Wolves, round 2
Mykel makes a swing at the green wolf, seeking to end its hostility.
The aim is a little off, resulting in a low growl.
Tsschas hits a patch of grass in front of the wolf, while Dandy aims somewhere else than his intended target.
---------
Blue wolf (prone) stands up. AoO Dandy vs prone: 1d20 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 4 = 121d6 ⇒ 2
It snaps its jaws at his leg. Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22Gnaw + trip: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Crit?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Trip?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 Blue's jaws lock with Dandy's ankle and he falls onto his back. "Grrr"
Green wolf (-12) is feeling vengeful and 5ft steps to bite its original prey.
Bite vs Tsschas: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15Gnaw + trip: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Trip?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20, likewise Tsschas falls onto his back, though this wolf's jaws locked onto his ankle for less hurt.

Lebrario & Nithrandyl
Nithrandyl Eikrekkr |
Not used to martial combat Nithrandyl strikes out with his elven branch spear and takes a step back away from the green wolf
EB Spear: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8..DMG: 1d8 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
The Dandy Hobo |
I was going to try and riposte and parry... but since that was a crit, don't think I can do anything about that :P
"Foul cur! Have at you!"
Dandy decides to throw caution to the wind and stands up, stabbing at the wolf before backing up.
Eating an AoO for standing up, will use a panache point to opportune parry and, if successful, riposte. This is from prone, so that modifier will still be in play
Cane sword @ wolf: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Damage on hit: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Parry vs wolf: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 4 = 20
Riposte if successful: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 4 = 1
Damage on hit: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Chyrone |
No, the terrain Dandy's on is grass.
I don't think you can parry & stand up at the same time, but if you can point me to where it says you can, it'd be appreciated. :)
Wolves, round 3
Dandy stands up, taking a set of jaws to the ankle.
AoO vs prone: 1d20 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 4 = 9Gnaw: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
His own legs were quicker than the wolf's jaws, and Dandy hits the wolf.

It's part of the ability. The parry is an AoO basically, the riposte is an immediate action if the parry succeeded. So no action is required to parry, just the immediate to counter atrack.

?
Poke wolf after drawing spear, dropping long spear 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 - 4 = 121d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Dropping his long spear, he elects to draw a spar from his back and strike the wolf with it!
Chyrone |
I've not seen an aoo vs an aoo before.
Seeing as you rolled a nat 1 on the counter atttack, it won't matter, but i'm unsure about it working that way.
Wolves, round 3
Dandy stands up, taking a set of jaws to the ankle.
