If no one objects, Red goes upstairs to release the dog. Carefully. He casts message again, to alert the party if the unexpected happens.

VC - Sydney, Australia

The dog is freed out of the room, and Red is careful enough and smart enough to avoid any issues.

The next morning rolls around and dawn sees you at the front of the Bank of Abadan as the guards begin opening up. You are across the road breakfasting on the quiet and drawing little attention to yourselves so you can plan.
Lead on :)

"So" Lizbeth begins with a conspiratorial whisper as she takea a drink from a mug of fresh juice in the early morning breeze. She had taken the time to dress in her usual battered outfit and he hair was once more a wild mane, barely contained. "Are we to waltz in all official like and demand access with the warrant? Or we gonna smooth talk our way to the lockbox? As it was late I doubt the gent has got here first so we have the element of surprise. I am happy to talk sweetly!"

I think I can handle this.

Ursahla adopts a more official looking guise, swapping her wig, adopting a different skin tone. Finally, her clothing changes until it takes on the appearance and insignia of a uniform similar to Lizbeth's!

With the key and evidence in hand, Ursahla approaches the nearest cleric.

Excuse me sir (or madam), I am Dessa Sandris of the Steel Falcons. I've been investigating a corrupt Andoran envoy who had been operating out of Absalom's foreign quarter. I have a warrant for his arrest, but our evidence points to this official accepting bribes and engaging in other sorts of financial impropriety and then storing those ill-gotten gains here. I have the warrant, the evidence, and his key. You can examine whatever you like. We are in the process of executing his arrest, but I've come to seize his assets.

The Abadarian fetches someone more senior who listens with a vaguely sympathetic ear "We appreciate your diligence, but rest assured, we too are diligent. Short of a court order from Absalom demanding most directly that we hand over the contents of his holdings, we would make no move to do so, and even then, our move would simply be to engage a Chelish lawyer to challenge the matter most vigorously"

He seems friendly, but distant, and could probably be won over to some degree - Abadarians have no love for criminals.

Lawyers could tie up the assets for day, which could cause all the delay they needed, so Ursahla decides to go along with it.

A lawyer? Yeah, maybe you should get one of those. Might as well get the process going right? You know how those matters can literally take weeks to clear up. Wouldn't want to keep his funds tied up too long, right?

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

VC - Sydney, Australia

"We have several" he smiles benignly, almost patronisingly - you feel that the approach was probably not the best. They are unlikely to be cowed by threats of legal action nor blustered into cooperation. "By all means, we await the Token Guard bringing us the letter of demand". Seeing that the business looks concluded for now, they start making moves to other customers.

I guess I was misunderstood. The idea was not to threaten, but to use the legal system to tie up the funds long enough to have another shot at an arrest should he try to collect them. If the intent was the threaten I would have rolled Intimidate instead of Diplomacy.

VC - Sydney, Australia

'Maybe you should get a lawyer' doesn't come across as particularly diplomatic though, and suggesting that it might take weeks (which would be at great expense to the church) might be seen as equally problematic. All good - whats everyone else doing?

I guess I assumed they would just have a team of lawyers in their employ (or as part of the church) and it wouldn't really be an extra expense, more like normal course of business. But it's the unfortunate reality of text not really conveying tone too well. I was more trying to appeal to bureaucracy. More like, "hey, can we just tie this up for a while? You don't lose face because you are doing your duty, but also I get what I want at the same time." The tone in her voice would not have been at all threatening, far from it.

That being said, is it possible that Ursahla could attempt a fairly convincing forgery? I am trained in Linguistics and I've seen official Absalom documents before (6-05 for example).

As the Abadarian turns their back, Lizbeth bites their lip slightly, unsure exactly whay to so but knowing she needed to act to resolve the situation. Matching the clergy's stride easily, she smiles sweetly and decides to go with flattery and respect of authority.

'The Law Waits for No Man', surely your Lord would look kindly on bringing this Lawbreaker to Justice? The Church of Anadar and the Eagle Knights have always been fast allies have they not? The clerics do listen in earnest to the number of overtures...

"My friends, perhaps you miss my intentions. The Bank of Abadar is not an institution that is interested in getting involved in such matters as allowing just any agency or nation to come and confiscate wealth or access peoples wealth - nor show the contents of vaults we hold under strictest confidence - we pride ourselves on being known for being safe and secure, and will always resist efforts on behalf of those who entrust us to secure their fortunes. Wealth must never be impeded, our god would have it to. Whilst the Andorans are known for their zeal and righteousness, could you say the same for some of the other nations in which we operate where rulership is fickle and often corrupt? No, we won't countenance such action against us any more than you would accept handing over your wealth at swordpoint"

"Although let's speak honestly, we have no time for thieves, cheats and liars either - he has not yet arrived this morning, and we would certainly not intervene if you were to attempt to effect an arrest, although we must insist on it being non-lethal. Perhaps you could await his arrival in a side office out of sight."

Wow - my rolls, not a hope

The Andoran traitor blanks out and goes limp in Eramos's arms - and not because he was swooning at the Ulfens embrace.

The Clerics of Abadar go back to their business, apparently satisfied that you have kept to the bargain.

***

You return the diplomat and the recovered evidence to Major Maldris, who
makes arrangements for his transport back to Andoran to face trial.

Taking the chance to speak in a secluded setting, Major Maldris shares his thoughts with you all “There are many who have flocked to Andoran’s freedom, yet in the passing years I have come to learn that a great number of these individuals see not love in our movement, but selfish opportunity. I fear that the direction our politicians have led, while on its surface seemingly inspired and courageous, has ventured little from the rule of our exiled nobility. Class warfare remains and much of our nation’s political power is controlled either directly or indirectly by the wealthiest members of our society. Many are formal nobles who publicly renounced their titles, but privately held onto power. For these individuals, renouncing their titles permitted them even greater opportunity and upward mobility, especially those who worked their way into trade and politics"

“I find the irony of fighting tyranny and corruption as an agent of a government that harbors the tyrannical and corrupt difficult to stomach. We may have captured a few of the snakes, but there are at least ten more villains for each one we have brought to justice. As it struggles with itself, Andoran cannot combat tyrannies as it should, so I am stepping away from Andoren politics to deliver its unadulterated philosophies to other lands. I, and anyone who is bold enough to join me, shall remain enemies of slavery and tyranny, yet without direct national ties, we shall be able to engage in even more daring actions abroad and cleanse even my homeland of its malaise without the oversight of those we seek to purge!”

Realizing he has crescendoed into a booming speech, Maldris more quietly reinforces the sincerity of his beliefs "Sorry I am lecturing, I hold the principles of Andoran so dearly in my heart, I hope tos see it be the shining beacon of the inner-sea. I thank you for your aid, and wish you enjoy the rest of the festivities"

Your work done here, you return to your lodgings and prepare for the Preinaugural Feast.

The semi-casual event takes place at a great hall in the Wise Quarter from
late afternoon through the evening and is heavily attended. Many members of Absalom’s Low Council attend, though the High Council is not present.

In addition to casual conversation, there is much conjecture and speculation concerning who shall become Grayrain’s successor, though you deduce it is all just wild gossip, unchecked rumour, and sheer speculation.

Rather done for the night you start wandering back thinking thoughts of bed when you note two Varisian toughs following your group. "Trust." Red shares a grin with Ursahla. "Layers of nuanced meaning for the Sczarni."

But he swishes his prehensile tail and encourages everyone to follow the two Varisian men. "I think we should accompany them, but be on our guard for whatever has them acting so strangely."

VC - Sydney, Australia

After satisfying yourselves this is unlikely to be a setup, you are led along a path that becomes fairly familiar...

They lead you through Absalom, doubling back on their path and taking several snaking turns to a brightly coloured ledge wagon parked in the Docks district only a few blocks from the Pickled Imp.

The escorts signal to several other Sczarni guarding the wagon as well as to a few street vendors positioned on opposite ends of the block ("Lookouts the Sczarni explain)

Once cleared to approach, you enter the wagon. The interior is dimly lit by small brass lamps that spread the faint odour of lamp oil, only partly masked by incense. The only other occupant is Qadiran man who makes an effort of standing to greet you in the low-ceilinged wagon. Picture in slides, it is Aaqir al’Hakam,

“I suppose you’re surprised to see me? Sit. I wish I could say I have called you here for a more celebratory reason, but such isn’t the case. We have a desperate situation on our hands: Guaril Karela is missing"

“Lately the Sczarni leader and I have discussed a deal that might be in both our organizations’ interest, and I had hoped to finalize more of the terms tonight. However, several individuals wearing Qadiran clothing and wielding long blades broke into the Pickled Imp, Guaril’s business, tried to set it ablaze, and kidnapped the proprietor—a Sczarni operative who has spent the last month disguised as Guaril to mislead his enemies. Despite their appearance, I have no connection to these vandals. In fact, they may even have been attempting to implicate me and eliminate yet another one of Guaril’s friends."

“Apparently Guaril did not take the news lightly, and I’ve been informed that he grabbed his weapons, ordered all but two of his subordinates to stay behind, and set off after the criminals. It seems this was just one of many contingencies he had prepared, for he had written instructions ready. It seems that part of the plan,” he notes aloud as he extends a sealed missive,“Involved recruiting your help in particular.

“I suspect that the Gael family is behind this, and Guaril sees this as an opportunity to finally do in the rivals who have worked to undermine and kill him for the past year. This has the potential to be very dangerous, but apparently, he wanted you to be present for whatever he has planned.”
