"Canna make sense of the magic on dis. but Ah dunna think these creatures exist anymore. Ah be thinking they be worth a pretty gold me friends. Worth thar weight in gold, those pots yonder." Kalaron chortles.
Clandelve Hammerhand |
Clandelve perks up at the mention of valuable artifacts.
"Been worth our time, then?" he smiles.
As they make their way back to the yellow door, the dwarf prepares for whatever might be behind it.
Seems we're close to the end. May be a good time for any buffs before we try the door.
Revvy Bitterleaf |
Just to point out...you can't get to the yellow door..or at least not without going back through the room which summoned the visions from your past which was sorta save or die (which Shayla mentioned as wanting to avoid before)..or find a way to open the closed red door. So that will mean a Will save for all of you if you just walk back towards the yellow door by backtracking your steps
Shayla Amye |
Retrieve arrows, 50% chance (<51 = good): 6d100 ⇒ (36, 85, 60, 70, 63, 62) = 376
Shayla walks up to the statues and looks around for the arrows that bounced off of them. To her dismay she finds only one unbroken arrow.
Appraise: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9
Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
"I see no reason to pin insects to cushions..."
Shayla turns to Archibald. "Even magic door can be bashed in, can't they? Especially with a magic weapon, I figure."
She smiles a devilish grin at Clandelve. "Do you want to do the honors, or shall I bring out my magically enhanced adamantine weapon?"
Kalaron Boulderstep |
Kalaron grins and takes a seat waiting for Clandelve to make them a new door.
Shayla Amye |
Shayla laughs loudly when Clandelve knocks the door our. "Silly little mages! Never underestimate raw power!"
She proceeds in the room with the three two colored doors. "Yellow next, then try the trick I mentioned with placing the hands in the face statues in the entry hall?"
Kalaron Boulderstep |
"Aye"
Revvy Bitterleaf |
So the plan is you first go to the yellow door and Clandelve smashes it down..then you go with your collection of severed hands to the face statues, right?
Clandelve smashes through the red door in a few blows and then you make your way to the yellow door..which is locked in the same way as the door you just smashed through and seems to be made of the same sturdy wood. Clandelve smashes through that one as well.
As you look in the room you see:
This plainly adorned chamber contains two five-foot-wide pillars of
billowing smoke, the north yellow and the south green.
Seeing no immediate treat you move back to the giant faces and place the hands you collected with the sigils on them in their respective colored faces on the forked tongues which contain an irregular depression that appears to be designed to fit a humanoid's hand.
Nothings seems to happen as far as you can tell.
What do you want to do next?
Archibald the Addlebrained |
Archibald will use arcane mark to copy one of the sigils onto his own hand, placing it into the depression.
Archibald the Addlebrained |
Let's say Red.
Revvy Bitterleaf |
As Archibald places his hand into the depression on the forked tongue of the red faced statue it animates in a flash and tries to clamps down hard on the offering.
Archibald the Addlebrained |
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
"Blast! Damnedable thing!" Archibald barks, as the statue clamps down on his hand, the arcane mark now burned into his flesh. "Well. Colour me out of ideas."
Kalaron Boulderstep |
"Hmmm. Put it back in again." Kalaron suggests even as he pulls out a wand.
Archibald the Addlebrained |
"The figure clearly reacted. I wonder what we could be doing wrong? Perhaps we should try another statue?"
Archibald clears his throat. "Well? Any volunteers? Pip pip! We haven't all day, you know."
Clandelve Hammerhand |
3 of us tied with a +6 reflex save...I'm guessing I'm the best candidate for this, though, since I have a +5 if it's a spell or spell-like effect.
Clandelve steps forward.
"Ye only live once!" he quips as he puts his hand into the device.
reflex save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 Add +5 if it's a spell or spell-like ability
Archibald the Addlebrained |
Archy will mark his companion with the yellow sigil and point him toward the yellow statue.
Kalaron Boulderstep |
Fingering his wand, the old dwarf waits.
Charasii Tar'varisi |
Just a quick reminder that I am on military duty until the 17th of May. I have very limited posting ability but will do so if I get a chance.
Revvy Bitterleaf |
Clandelve puts his hand in the yellow giant's face tongues indentation with the mark of the yellow sigil Archibald put on his hand with arcane mark ready to pull his hand out as the face starts to close down and....
nothing happens
The face doesn't animate, or react in any way to Clandelve's hand touching it
So no need for a reflex save for that one
Shayla Amye |
Shayla pouts her lips. "Those smoke pillars... I'd like to investigate them some more."
Slightly meta gamey, but they look like portals of some kind. And considering there's still some black left at the bottom of the map I'd like to inspect them a bit better.
She heads back to the room with the two smoke pillars. "Before we get more freaky marks on our hands... Archibald, what do you make of these things?"
Without detect magic:
Spellcraft, green: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
UMD, green: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Spellcraft, yellow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
UMD, yellow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Revvy Bitterleaf |
Shayla has no idea what to make of the 2 smoke pillars
Both spellcraft rolls are not high enough to yield any sort of information, but you do figure out that they are basically the same other then the color..and UMD (for activate blindly?) isn't high enough either
Aaaaaand if they are portals of some kind...what do you do with portals?
Shayla Amye |
Not sure if UMD could've added anything, but I figured I'd check first.
Not able to figure anything out by just staring at the pillars, Shayla decides she'll just test what happens if she steps into the smoke. "Guys, I'm going to test this here!"
After letting the others know what she's going to do, Shayla steps into the green pillar of smoke.
Revvy Bitterleaf |
As Shayla steps into the pillar of green smoke she has a brief sensation of moving and then steps out of the pillar on the other side turning around the see the rest of the party keeping an eye on her.
Also it doesn't effect anything going on right now, but you have the same creeping feeling of the hairs on the back of your neck standing on edge you've been feeling in the NE part of this dungeon again since you stepped into this room (since you are in the same area of effect again)
Clandelve Hammerhand |
Clandelve's disposition turns sour, or at least more sour than usual.
"Bah! Le's try th' ol' fashion way then an' search fer secret doors an' such!"
The dwarf takes his time searching.
I want to take 20 on the southern walls of D2, D3 (along with western and eastern walls in this room), D15, and D16 if that's not too much meta-gaming. 31 total perception.
Archibald the Addlebrained |
Archibald will stare intently at the rune at his hand and try stepping through one of the pillars.
Revvy Bitterleaf |
I'm fine with a bit of metagaming as long as it makes sense, but Clandelve doesn't come up with anything new when exploring the rooms he mentioned
Just to speed things up I'll assume that Archibald will try stepping through both pillars
Following Shayla's attempt to step through the green smoke Archibald steps into the green smoke intently looking at the rune on his hand as he does so. He steps out on the smoke on the other side of the pillar after a brief sensation of movement.
Everyone looking at Archibald sees the same as when they watches Shayla, a person stepping through a pillar of smoke and emerging on the other side.
Archibald doesn't notice the sigil on his hand do anything or feel any different.
Continuing his experiment Archibald tries the same with the yellow pillar of smoke, entering it and dissapearing from sight...and as opposed to what people saw before...doesn't emerge from the other side
I'll let Archibald know what happend to him after some other people responded on what they do next
Kalaron Boulderstep |
"What?" Kalaron sputters out as he runs towards the smoke and through it as well, concerned for his friend.
Kalaron Boulderstep |
Whoopee!! May I not get killed for this.
Clandelve Hammerhand |
Clandelve scowls as his companions disappear.
"Bah! Magic garbage! What now?!" he asks the others at his side.
Do we all want to run in? I'm a little worried since one had a sigil and one not...do they go to different places? I guess we could all run through and and up with Kalaron. Or do we all go back and try to get a sigil and then go with Archibald?
Shayla Amye |
I have no idea what's with the sigils, but I somehow find them creepy now they're being imprinted on us. I'll just dive into the smoke and see what happens.
Shayla moves into the yellow smoke pillar, figuring she'll test her luck.
EDIT: Changed green to yellow.
Revvy Bitterleaf |
@Shayla; I'm assuming you meant to step into the yellow pillar and follow Archibald and Kalaron? I'm going to assume that's what you meant to do for now and not that you retried the green smoke
As Clandelve wonders what to do Shayla moves into the yellow smoke pillar and disappears from sight
K, since half of you entered the pillar and I don't believe in doing the whole keep (half of) the party in suspense and work with private messages/spoiler blocks etc.
Archibald steps out of a green pillar made from smoke into a room that looks like the one he just left, but is different. This one has with frescoes of zealous supplicants and yellow mosaic flooring. A plume of yellow smoke rises from the floor.
As he stares around the room Kalaron bumps into him from behind, quickly followed by Shayla
Just to speed things along;
You decide to see what happens when you enter the yellow smoke pillar in this room and find out that it leads back to the room you just left. You pick up Clandelve and the others from there and continue your explorations in the new room.
The only door leading out of this room seems to be unlocked and you can't spot a trap on it..so it seems safe for you to open it.
Moved you all to the new room, SW part of the map
I'll assume you open the door, since it makes sense to do so at this point
Looking into the corridor behind the door you see;
Bells and strands of beads hang thick in this corridor, and passing through without disturbing them will be quite a challenge. On the other end of the corridor is a door.
This will require an successful DC 18 Acrobatics check or some creative solution
Shayla Amye |
I indeed meant to step into yellow.
"I think this is my cup of tea," Shayla says with a grin, and moves in between the bells and strands.
Acrobatics, -2 negative levels: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 - 2 = 6
She immediately bumps into one of the bells. "Darn it!"
Ref, -2 negative levels: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 6 - 2 = 20
Revvy Bitterleaf |
As Shayla moves through the corridor she immediately bumps into one of the bells setting of a dangling alarm but her cat like reflexes prevent the hanging bell from banging into it's neighbors and making even more noise.
She manages to reach the door on the other end and quickly determines it's not locked and she can't spot a trap on it either.
I'm still going to need the acrobatics check (or something else) from anyone else who walks through the corridor...unless of course you don't care and just make a lot of noise walking through the corridor
Clandelve Hammerhand |
"Nae a snowball's chance in th' Nine Hells I'll get through without a sound," Clandelve says.
I'll either need to just power through, or we need a silence effect, or we just send a couple scouts ahead. Since I think Shayla is our only stealthy one, maybe she should see if she can open the door and see what's there, and plan on booking it back if we run into problems.
Shayla Amye |
Using all the stealth she can muster, Shayla carefully opens the door and peeks around the corner.
If allowed I'll take 20 for a total of 24 (including +2 for urban terrain and -3 for negative levels). Otherwise, here's a roll:
Stealth: 1d20 + 4 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 2 - 3 = 19
Perception: 1d20 + 14 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (5) + 14 + 2 - 3 = 18
Revvy Bitterleaf |
I don't think you can take 20 on stealth since there's a chance of failure, take 10 should work though ..as far as I know
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
As Shayla carefully pushes open the door she can see a man standing in another corridor looking in the direction of the door..which Shayla just pushed open
This passageway runs west and east, with a door set in the north wall before the corridor turns to the north. Arches on the far east wall lead to a darkened chamber that periodically flashes with colorful bursts of light, casting the corridor in shifting shades of pink, scarlet, dusty rose, and incandescent blue.
The man has 2 daggers strapped to his belt, along with some scrolls and is wearing a flash cloak as notices Shayla one of his hands goes for one of the daggers as he raises his other hand and starts to mumble something.
Charasii: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Lars: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Shayla: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Clandelve: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Kalaron: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6
Archibald: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Man: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
X: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
Note that since you decided to send Shayla in front as a scout that the rest of you in a different room right now, unless someone thinks they would have walked into the room along with Shayla possibly setting of more bells? In which case, feel free to do so

Kalaron Boulderstep |
Nope Ain't got nothing on stepping through doors and bells.
Shayla Amye |
"Oy, stop mumbling spells!" Shayla quickly raises her longbow and lets several arrows fly at the man.
+1 Arrow, -2 Rapid Shot, -3 negative levels, +4 vs. humans: 1d20 + 11 - 2 - 3 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 11 - 2 - 3 + 4 = 16 Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 + 4 = 11
+1 Arrow, -2 Rapid Shot, -3 negative levels, +4 vs. humans: 1d20 + 6 - 2 - 3 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 6 - 2 - 3 + 4 = 21 Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 + 4 = 10
"GUYS!" she yells over her shoulder. "There's some human mumbling spells here! Could you come and help me out?!"
Lars von Halgraff |
Lars hears Shayla's call and hurries to the elf's aid.
"Stand fast Shayla! help is at hand!"
He grips his pear in both hands, holding the banner aloft. He pauses a moment in an effort to dodge the chains and beads.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
He makes sound, but as he hurries through he avoids triggering more noise.
Archibald the Addlebrained |
Archibald will move into the hallway, readying a magic missile to interrupt his spellcasting. "Let's see how he handles 'Archibald's Counterspell!'"
Readied Magic Missile: 4d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 1) + 4 = 11
