GM Alias |
"Youze two waits here." The gnoll barks at Roderick and Hillian, before herding the rest of the group up a ladder and into a side room.
The slave quarters consist of a single long room with several bunk beds against the back wall, a pair of buckets in the corner, and a heavy wood door that can be barred from outside. After shoving the new slaves inside, the gnoll locks the door behind him, and wanders back into the courtyard.
A Kelishite man (yellow outline) wearing a pale linen scarf about his head and an excessively wide grin on his face, is sitting here with two other slaves, not including the new arrivals. He greets you and quickly establishes the ground rules and pecking order. The other slaves hang back, waiting to see how the newcomers respond.
“Welcome! I am Korshad, overseer for our masters. Though I wear a collar, you’ll find it’s best to do as I say! Now, they lock us in at night when they go hunting, but mostly we have the run of the place, nearly as much liberty as the hyenas. You’ll be trained to be excellent house slaves, then taken back to the ships to be sold to nice noble families. It may seem harsh, but if you take to it, it’s probably a better life than you were used to before. Meanwhile you should get some rest and we can begin your lessons in the morning. As the proverb says, ‘When the day is hottest, even the busy must rest and wait.’”
Touchy, Galarean, or Conlaoch:
If Perception check is successful:
To remove the collars is Disable Device, DC25. The current number and placement of everyone is show on slide 2 of the map.
Roderick Xim |
Roderick is not comfortable being in the same room with a loose Hyena.
Once the gnolls leave, he will also look to the chest and be ready to open it if his comrades are in need of their gear. Moving that direction unless the beast takes exception.
Warm night here, would you not agree, Hillian?
Galarean |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Knowledge, religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Hi Korshad. My name is Galarean, I will take your advice and rest. it has been a long journey and we are a bit tired. That gnolls seem brutal. Are you sure they know how to train us?
Hillian Vandus |
Hillian sidles closer to the gnoll and hyena, while holding the small-talk facade with Roderick.
"It sure is Roderick. How are you faring, master gnoll? I suppose you're used to the heat."
Conlaoch McCullagh |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Knowledge, religion - untrained: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Conloach, not happy about being locked up at all, says nothing.
It was a mistake to let them lock us in here. We may truly be slaves, now.
He simply glares around the place, saying nothing.
GM Alias |
The gnoll wandered back into the courtyard once he locked the slaves up in the side room. The hyenadon eyes Roderick and Hillian warily, but leaves it leaves the two of you alone for now. Although it perks up whenever you move too close to the slave pen. The scraps of paper on the floor shift in a slight breeze.
Korshad turns towards the newcomers. He seems quite please that Galarean is heeding his advice. "Oh yes, the training is quite thorough. The gnolls don't do the training, of course. They have a djinni, Jairo, in their service. He handles the actual training."
Turning toward Touchy, he seems to completely miss his attempt at sarcasm. "Oh, yes, I feel we are quite lucky. I know being a slave isn't ideal, but our masters here aren't too harsh, and we do get the benefit of the training."
Roderick Xim |
Well Hillian, it seems our hosts have left us with only this furry companion for company. Not very talkative. This heat is going to be the end of me. I am in need of a drink from all this dust swirling about.
He mops his brow and pulls out a drink of mutagen (dex) and nods to Hillian in the direction of the swirling papers.
Seems some trash blew in with the dust.
Can we see or hear the slaves or the gnolls in the courtyard?
Touchy |
"So how long til the sun hits the horizon and this heat dies down." Touchy mutters rhetorically, fully aware how long it is til sundown.
I'm assuming we're waiting for nightfall and the ones partying are drunk?
He goes over to check out the lock on the door, to see what it will take to unlock from this side.
Did we ever determine a difficulty on the collars?
Hillian Vandus |
Picking up on Roderick's hint, Hillian walks over to the rustling papers.
"Oh, we'd better keep the place tidy..."
He picks them up if the gnoll dosen't interfere or object.
Roderick Xim |
Hillian, I think/hope we only have the hyena, as the gnolls left to party. But your intent is still valid.
GM Alias |
The current position of everyone you know about is shown on slide 2 of the maps. Touchy, Galarean, and Conlaoch are locked up in the slave pen with Korshad and the other slaves. Hillian and Roderick (and the trunk with the rest of the party's gear) are in the next room over (the kennel) with a large hyena keeping an eye on them. There are four gnolls and a hyena milling about between the barracks and the courtyard, and none of them are paying much attention to either group at the moment. It looks like they are starting to break into the stash of wine. There is a fifth gnoll up in the watch tower.
The scraps of paper in the kennel area have been shredded, probably by the hyena. It pays little attention to Hillian as he goes around examining the debris.
Hillian and Roderick can make this check.
Khorsad responds to Galarean's statement: "Oh, yes. I can assure you that Jairo is most learned, and has a great deal of knowledge on proper service to the upper classes."
Galarean recalls that djinni are outsiders native to the Plane of Air. They appear as large humanoids with clouds, mist, or vortexes in place of the lower limbs. They are quite skilled in magic, but susceptible to being bound to the service of others through wish magic.
To remove the collars is Disable Device, DC25. The door to the slave pens is locked, but is easy to pop open with a good shove. It seems the gnolls rely more on intimidation and the large hyena in the kennels to keep the slaves in line. It is about an hour before sundown.
Roderick Xim |
Roderick will take a look at the papers with Hillian
percep: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 nope
INT: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Not much left of these, it appears.
In a lower voice, he whispers so gnolls cannot hear
(In Azlanti, which I believe Hillian can speak) We need to see if we can find the key to the cell. I could try to go invis, but will not get far with these hyenas scent. Be ready if it should open from their side.
Conlaoch McCullagh |
Conloach moves up next to his halfling friend, and whispers "Now is the time. Can you get these collars off?"
Hillian Vandus |
Intelligence: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Hillian spots what's left of interest on the scraps.
"Not quite, Roderick. It seems like an incomplete list of signatures. One from '---orn Desimire', one by 'M. Sloan', and one from 'Jacquo Dals---'"
Hillian nods somberly at Rodericks suggestion.
I'll cast Shield when Roderick goes invisible.
Touchy |
Touchy grins at Conloach. "You sure you want to remove 'em? They're quite the fashion in Katheer I hear."
He reaches up and tugs at his own collar, removing it like it was not even attached. He rubs his neck slightly, and beckons the man over.
Lessee what we can do. One hand disappears into his beard, and comes up with a couple of tools concealed there, and he takes a moment to work on Conloach's collar.
"Watch the toadie in the corner." He mutters, with a quick nod towards Khorsad. "We might need to put the fear of Calistria in him if he starts getting antsy."
Luckily, Conloach's got some decent intimidate skills if we need 'em

He glances over at Galarean and winks, grinning. "On or off, dear?"
For the record, this is not an easy check for me to make without taking a 20 (and a long time)
Galarean |

Galarean also has read the names os Desmirne and Jacquo, but that names doesn't are familiar to her.

The kiss is a Guidance spell. You have a +1 to your next save, attack or skill roll.

I think the notes in the other room with the heyena.. so we can't quite look at it yet =)
"Ho ho!" He chortles, as he gets to work on hers.
"This is likely to be a hard one!"

He mocks a sigh. "Always finish too soon."
Roderick Xim |
Roderick listens to the names as read. Not sure what to make of them at the moment.
To Hillian (in Azlanti)
The keys will be helpful, but I daresay I did not see which gnoll carries them.
He makes a mental note for later that 'knock' would be a great addition to his formula book. He doubts his minor skill with disabling locks will succeed on the lock before the alarm is raised or the hound objects.
Hillian Vandus |
Hillian responds in Azlanti.
"Sadly, I'm not of much help with neither finding keys nor disabling locks. You do what you deem necessary, and I'll handle the consequences."
Roderick Xim |
Roland nods and starts to edge closer to the cell door to get a better look at the quality of the lock.
Conlaoch McCullagh |
"Thanks, Touchy. I keep an eye on that one while you get us out."
Conloach watches the others.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
GM Alias |
Korshad sees the group start to fiddle with the slave collars.
"Hey, wait a minute. Stop that! Taking those off is only going to anger the gnolls. In fact, I'm going to have to call them back in here if you don't cease immediately." He scowls at you, and fully expects you to heed his commands.
Roderick examines the lock on the door. It is of average quality, but door frame where the lock engages is chipped and weak. It looks like a good shove will knock the door open.
As Roderick moves towards the door, the hyena raises its head and watches. It sniffs the air, but takes no further action at this point.
Touchy |
"Oh, shut your gob." Touchy growls back at Korshad in annoyance as he continues to work on the collar ignoring the man's objections. "Don't know what the Dawnflower was thinking when she marked you."
"Conloach, if he says another word, feel free to remind him there are no gnolls here right now, just us."
Hopefully Con or Galarean can shut him up =)
Conlaoch McCullagh |
Conloach looks at the whiner and glares. "Keep your trap shut."
Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Roderick Xim |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Roderick will pull out some metal tooth picks and pokes at the lock and watches the hyena's reaction. If it does not appear too upset, he will fiddle a bit more with the device.
Hillian, seems construction code around here is lacking. Quality not quite up to par with most cities. I would warrant that beast could knock this door down by accident. I may have to report this to our hosts...as soon as the party ends...maybe tomorrow after I make a few more checks.
DD+mutagen: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 2 = 25 wow, he missed his calling!
Take this lock for instance. It is practically falling off the door.
GM Alias |
Korshad looks crestfallen, but stops any attempt to alert the gnolls. He strolls silently to a back corner and sits on a cot. He keeps a wary eye on the group, but makes no further effort to interfere.
Glarean can hold the hex if she wants.
Up to now, the hyena has pretty much left Roderick and Hillian alone. However, once it sees Roderick messing with the lock, a low growl starts in the back of its throat. You get the sense that once you open the door, it will bark out an alarm and/or attack.
Touchy |
"I thought not." Touchy mutters as Korshad sits back down. The dwarf continues removing Conlaoch and Galarean's collars.
We don't know where the others are, right? Roderick and Hillian?
"Now to fetch your things, and locate the others." He grins. "Easy!"
He takes a quick listen at the door, to see if he can detect what's in the next room.
Is there a keyhole to peek through?
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Roderick Xim |
Roderick just leaves the door unlocked but does not open it yet.
In a bit louder voice he says to Hillian in common.
Why, with this faulty lock, any of our merchandise could just walk out...anytime they wanted.
Hillian Vandus |
In hushed Azlanti, Hillian relays a possible plan to Roderick.
"I could buy us some time by overwhelming the hyena with brilliant colors."
I have a Color Spray prepared, though it's only a Will DC 14 to beat it.
Galarean |
Glarean can hold the hex if she wants.
If I have no need, I don't use it yet
Galarean approaches to the door and listen trying to figure what is happening at the other side.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Touchy, can you open that door? Gnolls are stupids, but I don't expect we are on an open cell.
She touches the dwarf ass
Hope you can unlock that door too
I use a guidance again to help Touchy
Roderick Xim |
If Roderick hears any commotion inside the cell door, he will drop his longspear and morningstar on the ground outside the door and grabs the handle, ready to pull it open.
You slaves better not be causing any trouble or we are going to open this door and remedy the situation really QUICK!
With that he nods to Hillian and will yank open the door, ready to see the response from the Hyena.
GM Alias |
Roderick yanks open the door, and the large hyena jumps to its feet, emitting a loud bark!

1st: Roderick, Galarean, Conlaoch
2nd: hyena
3rd: Hillian, Touchy
Roderick, Galarean, and Colaoch are up! Go ahead and post in any order, and I will do a summary at the end of the round. 'Slaves' are about 20 feet from the chest with all their gear.
Roderick Xim |
Roderick quickly motions to the freed prisoners.
The chest is nearby but needs unlocking. I left a couple weapons lying by the door. We have a minor obstacle to opening the chest.
he points first to the 2 weapons and then to the large snarling hyena.
He will mix and hurl a bomb at the beast.

Roderick gets things started with a bang, as he tosses a bomb at the large hyena. At the sound, the noises from the courtyard cease, as the gnolls move towards the disturbance.
@Roderick, so is that 11 dmg + 6 dmg fire? Or 11 dmg total?

2nd: hyena
3rd: Hillian, Touchy
Party is up! Unless you have some way of blocking off the entrance to the kennel, this fight is about to get a lot more crowded.
Roderick Xim |
11 dmg if that hit its FF touch AC. Reflex is for splash if it missed
Get that chest quickly. We may have company soon. Hang in there Hillian!
Roderick will again mix and hurl a bomb at the beast, excluding poor Hillian from the blast.

Touchy |
"Guess subtlety's off the table." Touchy exclaims with a laugh. "Though I suppose if you're on the table, you've already slapped subtle upside the head, ha!"
He moves over to the opening to see about closing the portcullis before reinforcements arrive to investigate the explosions.
"Knew this lady once, in the Coins. Husband was a real prude, liked to lock her in the house at night so she couldn't go to services." He says, to no one in particular. "Had a gate like this installed on their front door. Didn't keep out ol' Touchy from giving her proper devotions!"
"Better motivation admittedly, but I try to be adaptable."
"And flexible!" He adds.
Using the guidance Galarean gave me a bit back and attempting to close and disable the gate from this side. (The description seem to imply it could be done from both... quick release on the inside, and a slower rope system outside. So, pull the lever, then see about disabling the pulley system.
