Dorn Gritstone |
"Bloody dammit!" Dorn yells as the cliff falls away before his feet. He watches helplessly as the singy fellow and the big scaled critter go toppling down among the rocks.
"Damn." Dorn stares down after them a bit-- then shrugs, and resumes knotting his rope to the roots. They'll need to get back up somehow, after all, and he might as well keep his trap shut for now.
GM Paladin |
When Orophin and Avril mention Ignizi, and Avril pulls out the token, which is a embroidered handkerchief.
With a POP! a tiny dragon with butterfly wings appears out of thin air near Orophin. He flutters up the ravine to look at Avril, and peers at the handkerchief. "Why, it's the one I gave her! You must have been sent by her. Oh I am so sorry for my deception, but I had no idea whether you were friends or not! I've had unfriendly folks try to capture me before, and that collapsing bank is what I used to help prevent it! I'm not much of a fighter, so I have to use trickery. But any friend of Ignizi is a friend of mine! Um... Sorry about that, singing-man. I hope you and your lizard friend weren't hurt too badly. I think there's something that the last fellow who fell down there dropped, you can have it if you'd like!"
Near his feet, Orophin sees a pair of tarnished goggles.
"You're here to deal with the zombies? I might know a thing or two about them. We should head to Ignizi's cottage and I'll tell her what I know!"
Orophin Telemnarn |
Orophin picks them up and has a look at them.
spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
"I'm not too sure what they do.. anyone else?"
Then he grins at the psudo dragon.
"Nothing too badly damaged, I'm just glad you are not hurt."
He waits for the rope to be lowered and then climbs out.
Once out, he waits for the others to also climb out before reaching out to the life forces all around, and redistributing them.
channel to heal: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6) = 11
"Lets head back then, but we really do need to rescue one of her students.. and time may be of the essence."
GM Paladin |
"Wait a rescue? You didn't say anything about that! She was taken by the undead? We've little time to waste! Oh, but we need to know where to go... wait here. Hmm. Better camp here actually, I must visit Robin and the fauns, they were saying something about some meddler making undead creatures... it'll take me a few hours to get to them and come back, and they don't care for hooms. It'll be safe here in my patch, and it's almost night anyway. You hooms don't like to travel at night, right?"
Dorn Gritstone |
Dorn squints down at the colorful little... thing.... and spits absently onto the earth. Silently, he winds up his rope again once Orophin and Cryxial are back topside.
At the glitter-dragon's words, though, he snorts. "We're not all humans," he points out. "Me, I'd be keen to beat feat. We wrote off one night already, leavin' this lass in the clutches of whoever.... now we'll do it a second? Leaves a poor taste in my mouth!"
(IC objection is IC.)
Dr. Strang |
Dr. Strang watches Riddywhipple with intense interest, his journal already out and in hand, as he makes a few preliminary sketches.
He also takes a minute to examine the goggles that Orophin found in the ravine.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
"Interesting." He mutters. "The crystal lenses are certainly atypical for corrective eyewear and seem to be undamaged." He takes a moment to buff out some of the worst of the tarnish, then spends a few more looking through them at things nearby.
"Would appear they have been specially designed to magnify items viewed in close." He observes finally. "Good for doing fine detail work up close, small mechanisms or the like I expect... though useless for anything further then a a few feet."
"Fear not, Mr. Gritstone," He responds, to Dorn's objections. "We cannot go anywhere, until we know where said anywhere happens to be."
He motions to the small flying dragon. "And our new friend there seems eager to go learn just that for us. We can't go along with him for that part. With the mercurial nature of the fey, should we go, we are as like to cause them to refuse to answer, as we are to get answers."
"And answers are what we need." He adds distractedly.
You notice he has put the goggles on, and seems to be examining Dorn's head with alot more interest then usual.
Perhaps someone might offer the alexandrite to help grease the wheels of communication? Not sure. Strang's too busy to mention it at the moment =)
Orophin Telemnarn |
"I assume we would just slow you down if we were to accompany you? If not, then I would dearly love to meet a faun." asks Orophin.
"I do worry a little, you have obviously been attacked before, and there are zombies all about. It would be safer if we went with you, and you could tell us more about these woods and the folk who live in them while we traveled."
With a shrug he adds "I have no difficulty travelling at night."
Avril Axiel |
Cryxial nods to Orophin after he heals them both. "Thank you for patching me up." He says in a deep rasping voice. Avril runs over to the Aasimar and throws her arms around him for a hug. The clinking of breastplate against breastplate kinda ruins the moment though. "Glad to see you are safe and able to patch both of you back up."
Back to the matter at hand.. "Cryxial can see in the dark, but I can not. However with some lighting I should be able to work fairly well in the darkness, but it might give us away to enemies. Either way, that would have to wait until you come back. The token won't help in letting us deal with the fauns right?"
If he leaves she turns to look at the others. "Maybe we can look for something nicer to eat for the day instead of just trail rations? We got several hours to spare."
Would you allowing to look for food using survival while remaining fairly stationary?
Orophin Telemnarn |
Orophin happily returns the hug.
"Of course if we were to wait, I have several songs that I'm sure you would love to hear."
He sighs at the metal breastplates. "I find armour somewhat distorting to the harmony though. Still, after last time I was told I had to keep it on. Maybe when we are back in town we can find somewhere we can dress.. more comfortably."
GM Paladin |
Trap's been dealt with, actually.
"You all seem the same to me, seams and all! Except for you," Riddywipple says, pointing at Cryxial. "You've got sensible scales, though you're scaled up a bit from me -- not like these soft skins. Anyway, the fauns might rightly be alright, but Robin Goodfellow won't tow the line to help us if I come with hooms in tow. Besides, if I go at your speed it'll take twice as long and be half as nice!."
With that, the oddly-speaking dragon flies off into the sunset.
I'll assume you make camp and set up watches while waiting for him to return.
Well after dark, but before the moon has set, Riddywipple returns.
"I found out! Robin's pixie friend Pollina, a very friendly trixie youngster, lit out with me for a bit of a fly-around, where we chatted about all the happy happenings in the forest as well as some untidy tidings. As it turns out, the carved cave near my pegasi friendlies has a new body that everybody agrees is disagreeable. The old cold cavern used to be used by humans long before long ago, but it’s been empty as a log since then.
"Now it seems an unseemly creature has wandered in from the bit of bog near Wartle and taken to torturing and terrifying
the forest. The monster’s name is Marigana, and trappers chased her from her Wartle morass after she kidnapped some napping kids from the town and turned them into deadly undead. Now she’s taken up taking over Sanos, and wants to spread her terrible territory. We can make a joint journey to see the poisonous new occupant, but it will be doubtlessly undeadly."
"If you want to head off now, to get ahead, I'll come with you and you can come with me! But don't you hooms get tired, fired, expired if you don't sleep? I won't make a peep!"
Dorn Gritstone |
Dorn squints sidelong at Orophin and Avril, then shrugs to himself.
On Strang's attempted inspection of him, Dorn's face contorts into a snarl. "Don't you go poking at me!" he growls. "Don't want you and your magic messin' up MY head!"
He stomps off from any further inspection Strang might have attempted, going to gather some firewood instead. Down in the hollow of the ravine where the light won't carry in the forest at large, Dorn starts a small fire for warmth and comfort, and feeds twigs into it sullenly, side-eyeing Strang if he comes close at all.
When Riddywipple returns, he's on his feet almost before the little dragon manages to get out most of the rapid-fire speech. "Right then, let's go!"
(Again, IC opinion is IC. I'm fine with waiting until dawn if people prefer.)
GM Paladin |
If you want to continue now, I won't object. There aren't hard-and-fast rules about fatigue if you don't get enough sleep, and no spells were cast the previous day. Does anyone have any questions for Riddywipple?
Orophin Telemnarn |
Orophin looks around the group.
"I've only used a small amount of power healing everyone, I think we should head on sooner rather than later."
Avril Axiel |
If we won't suffer from fatigue I'm fine with going, but fatigue would cripple Avirl/Cryxial as it makes it impossible to charge. I don't know how many hours we've spent travelling etc.
Beromir |
I'm also fine with going now if fatigue is not an issue.
Beromir turns to Riddywipple and asks, "Do you have any idea what does Marigana look like? Is it a living being, an undead? Is it big or small?
GM Paladin |
"None of the fickle flying fey are quite sure what sort of creepy creature Marigana is, but she has been seen touring with an entourage of skilled skeletons and zooming zombies, so surely she is up to some necromantic antics! She's a little bitty bit little, but no one's gotten closer than close enough to see that much or little."
Once everyone has made it clear they wish to continue, Riddywipple leads them off through the night.
After hours of walking, dawn finally breaks just as the party reaches a muddy, reedy lake surrounded by underbrush and large stones. I've arranged you in an order that seems logical but feel free to rearrange yourselves if you wish.
"Ah, my fine feathered flying friends the pegasi live here lively, that they do! Perhaps they can offer some helpful help!"
Along the lake shore, you see a stately pegasus grazing among the reeds.
Avril Axiel |
So, is it light outside now? I've always been a fan of the GM rolling perception to speed things up.
perception Avril: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
perception Cryxial: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Beromir |
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
"There's something amiss here", Beromir says in a low voice. "It seems like the pegasus is wounded and is eating... the carcass of a creature. We should take a closer look."
Avril Axiel |
"Are Pegasi usually carnivores?" Avril says in an innocent voice, a bit unsure of the situation, though she keeps her voice down as well.
Orophin Telemnarn |
"How odd.. " says Orophin, checking his breastplate is once again secured.
"I must say I've never seen a flying horse before. Apart from the wounds it looks magnificent."
GM Paladin |
"Carnivores? Oh no... no no no no no this isn't right, not right at all!" Riddywipple exclaims.
Yes, it is light outside. You have a single round of actions at this point before the pegasus (or whatever it is) takes notice of you.
Orophin Telemnarn |
Orophin readies his morning star.
"Should I worry that you worry my little friend? "
Asks Orophin/
"Stay close to me, and I'll ensure your safety; with my own body if needs be."
Dr. Strang |
"It would appear this Marigana's influence has extended to our equine friend over there." Dr. Strang adds, pondering the scene.
"No worries, though. It seems another simple animation, like the owlbears the night before last."
Well, I assume they might be? Let us see...Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
GM Paladin |
"They've been turned into... no this can't be true, I can't believe it! Diodalus! It's me, Riddywipple! Can you hear me?" the little dragon calls out impulsively. In response, the pegasus's head lifts, and even at a distance you can see it looks unnatural.
Dorn Gritstone |
Sorry, spent the day at PFS
Dorn squints forward at the others pointing out something isn't right, trying to see what's going on. Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 Noooope
He doesn't see the cause of the problem, but he trusts his companions enough to advance cautiously, at least. He makes sure his shield is in position and draws his axe, stomping forward.
Avril Axiel |
You said a single round of actions as opposed to a surprise round right? If so Avril/Cryxial could move to get in charge range (65 feet away it's possible to get a straight line to it).
Once Avril realizes this is another zombie, she doesn't hesitate to listen to rest of the conversation but instead rides forward, lowering her lance to smash the creature. "A zombie? Let's deal with it the usual way. By smashing it to bits. She exclaims with confidence as Cryxial leaps forward beneath her legs, ready to carry her into battle.
Orophin Telemnarn |
"Perhaps the doctor would be able to assist in us putting this undead to rest. " asks Orophin.
"This time, even I see somewhat the point in keeping the poor creature with us if as we know where he was made... and he can help put the situation right. That would seem appropriate."
GM Paladin |
Yes, no surprise round. You're all aware of it, and it's aware of you. Wanting to give everyone a chance to make a post. If you post without actions in it, I'll assume you're holding your action for now (unless you make another post with actions). Waiting for Zac and Beromir presently. As Zac was the only one to beat the zombie in initiative, he can make two rounds of actions in his post, the second of which will be the first turn in combat order.
Avril init: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Beromir init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Dorn init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Dr. Strang init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Orophin init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Zac init: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
zombie init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Beromir |
Beromir closes his eyes, concentrates for a moment and thick brown, bear-like fur sprouts from his skin. The bear-man then walks towards the creature, axe in hand.
I use the Totem Transformation from the Bear Shaman archetype, which gives me +2 natural armor bonus to AC (and the Endurance feat).
Dr. Strang |
"Could assert control over the energies animating this if neccessary." the Doctor replies to Orophin, with a nod. "Unlike the last, these seem more geared towards durability than motility, but should be equally as vulnerable to having their animating forces co-opted."
He watches Avril and and Dorn getting their weapons ready. "Though I suspect it will return to its resting state soon enough, regardless."
Avril Axiel |
"By all means, if you can prevent us having to fight it altogether then go ahead. I'm not set on destroying it if there is an easier way. " Avril calls out over her back as she readies herself for battle.
May I suggest walking up and readying an action to command it if it comes close enough?
GM Paladin |
Moving for Zac:
Zac moves forward and asks Dr. Strang if he intends to control the zombie like the previous one, and if he wants the zombie to be kept intact.
Longbow: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
That's the initial round. Now he goes first in initiative.
He moves forward again and fires another arrow.
longbow: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Waiting to see what Strang says. If the party decides to make this zombie your (rotting) meat shield for the rest of the scenario, I don't want to bot Zac into damaging it.
GM Paladin |
Zac's arrows whistle through the air, piercing the zombie's decaying flesh and sticking inside them. This doesn't seem to hurt it as much as one might expect.
This gets the zombie's attention. It lifts into the air with its wings, flapping them clumsily, and soars low over the brush and reeds to smash bodily into Zac. However, the well-armored fighter turns aside at the last moment to let the impact glance off his breastplate.
Riddywipple flies about in a tizzy, not sure what to do.
Initiative order:
Zombie
???
Dr. Strang
Orophin
Avril
Beromir
Dorn
Zac
Charge: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 = 16
Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 31
Dorn Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Dorn Gritstone |
Dorn's head snaps out towards the water, his mouth going slack for a moment, before it turns into a grimace.
"WHATEVER YOU ARE," he roars at the water, "YOU'LL NOT GET IN MY HEAD! AND AFTER I FINISH WITH THIS DEAD HORSE, I'LL BEAT YOU NEXT! Yeh watery TART!"
Seeing that Beromir is now standing in the path before him and the undead beast, Dorn instead cuts around to the water, apparently intending to make good on his threat to deal with Whatever That Is after he sees this zombie to its knees.
Double-moved. I drew a line on the map indicating Dorn's last squares of movement (skirting the probable attack of opportunity). Entering rage.
Dr. Strang |
Dr. Strang moves forward to get a bit closer, disturbed by Dorn's reactions to something unseen, and worried about being attacked on two fronts.
"Is there something in the water?"
He tries to see what sort of danger might be lurking out in the stream (Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7) but can see nothing untoward.
Turning back towards the zombie, he raises his staff and concentrates, invoking the power of his god to quell the creature.
Going to use the channel energy/feat version of command undead. This only works if it has 6 or fewer hit dice, and has a relatively low will save DC of 13 to ignore it.
"Your time has past." He says, "Stand still and accept what fate Anubis offers."
If he does manage to control it, he'll just have it stand there and do nothing.
Opposed Charisma Check (if needed): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
GM Paladin |
Don't you get an iterative attack too?
-Posted with Wayfinder
Avril Axiel |
I think everyone else's actions depends on if the channeling had any effect. Could we get the verdict on that? I'm curious why he didn't use the spell version given that he has one prepared an always can use his bonded item if we actually run into even more undead, but eh, not my character. Also I'm curious if I can use ride-by attack in this situation to charge according to the line I drew. It would have Avril attack from 2S or 3S of her current position and Cryxial attacking from 4S 1W. I think it should work, but sadly the rules on ride-by-attack aren't very clear. Ride-by-attack does not provoke an AoO from the target of the charge.
The following is assuming it doesn't stop, if it does stop Avril will probabl let it be:
Avril is surprised to see the zombie move so quickly. Hadn't Dr. Strang said this would be slower? She sends a mental message to Cryxial and lowers her lance. With trained movement the eidolon sprints alongside the beast. This momentum allows Avril to put greater force behind her attack and she drives her lance into the creature. Cryxial continues along to nearly the opposite of the creature compared to Zac before using a tuft in the grass to turn and fling himself at the creature, maw and claw trying to rip it to shreds.
attack lance: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 damage: 3d8 + 18 ⇒ (7, 7, 8) + 18 = 40
attack bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
attack claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
attack claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Both bite and claw counts as slashing, but Avril's lance does not.
GM Paladin |
Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
The zombie freezes in place at Menes's command.
When I was choosing actions for Zac, I noticed he had more melee feats than archer feats, so I figured he'd be most likely to use the bow as he was moving in to attack with his axe, as opposed to standing back and firing multiple arrows.

Redoing my actions since the basis for them is not there anymore
"What are you roaring at the water for?" Avril says and turns towards Dorn. "Someone trying to get into your head? Through magic? I got a spell for that, though sadly not enough uses to help everyone" She says before chanting quickly whereupon her head blows briefly with a soft white light before Cryxial rides over to get a better look at the water.

The zombie is holding still due to Dr. Strang's command of it. Attacking will break that. Do you still want to do that? You could move up, he could order it to close its eyes and not pay attention to anything, and then you could CdG it if you want, but that would take two rounds.
