You have all been called to the antechamber of the office of Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin at Skyreach, the towering headquarters of the Pathfinder Society in Absalom. The note that brought you here was brief and to the point:

Expedition to Geb forming. Meet in my office at the 9th bell of the morning. - VC Ambs. Valsin.

Geb! A simple name for, from what you've heard, a fearsome land.

Knowledge(local or religion) DC 10:
Geb is a nation ruled by the undead. Intelligent undead have the same rights as the living in other lands, and the kingdom uses other undead as a form of cheap labor and as expendable, renewable soldiers in the country's armies.

Kn(local or religion) DC 15:
Because of the nation’s dependence and promotion of undeath, the faithful of Pharasma, goddess of death, often conduct raids into the country in an attempt to destabilize it, to destroy unholy sites, and eliminate the undead abominations that call Geb home.

Kn(local or religion) DC 20:
Living creatures need to be careful while in Geb since they can become conscripts in the army, or used as sustenance for the various types of undead within the kingdom.

Please introduce and briefly describe your character, and engage in any introduction or greeting RP you'd like while we wait for everyone to 'arrive'.

Iranar is an attractive young man with strongly angelic qualities... it's not hard to tell that he's got some celestial blood in his bloodline, and recently. He has a haughty swagger, and carries numerous wands and scrolls and only a single dagger for a weapon.

A picture of Milton should you choose to view it

A short (5'), but imposing tiefling enters the room. With black and red platemail armor and a black tabard with Asmodeus' star on it, he is quite clearly a follower of the Prince of Darkness. His black hat is betassled with red balls, which seem a bit foppish on a man with such large tusks. With a dark black set of manacles hanging at his waist opposite the cold iron mace, he looks like a man ready for any eventuality.

"This is the material I am asked to work with? The Prince of Pride deserves more, but sometimes we must make do with what we are provided." Milton takes a deep breath, "Alright, I am Milton, as briefly as possible, I will need you each to describe how you can be useful to the upcoming mission. To show that there is no mal intent in my request, I will begin. I bring brains, brawn, leadership, and a devotion to the mission that might allow for each of you to die and be left along the wayside while I continue on, should the mission require it. So then, who is next?"

At this point, the doorway to the inner office opens, and a booming voice calls out. “Welcome! Welcome my friends! Please. Have a seat.” The speaker, Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin, points to a number of chairs around his desk in the well-appointed, oak-paneled office. He sounds friendly, but his smile seems forced.

“I’m not one for beating around the bush, so let me lay it out for you. Three weeks ago, we lost contact with an expedition of Pathfinders sent into Geb, led by a researcher from Absalom named Joktan Heth. He and the other members of his group were magically disguised as undead creatures and tasked with recovering an ancient tome known as the Testament of Geb, purported to be a scholarly treatise on the creation of new types of undead—intended specifically for use on the battlefield. Joktan’s mission was to sneak into the country, locate the Testament, and bring it back to the Vaults. He’s overdue and we fear the worst. We need you to undergo the same process of disguise, infiltrate Geb, and learn the whereabouts of Joktan, his team, and most of all, the Testament. Pathfinders, time is of the essence. If that book falls into the wrong hands, it could destabilize the entire Inner
Sea region. We need that book and we have the utmost faith that you’ll do what’s necessary to make sure we get it.

“Any questions?”

Roughly speaking, what percentage of casualties from this assembled team do you consider to be acceptable in support of the successful accomplishment of the mission?" "The ideal number of casualties would be none. If any of you fall in battle, I expect the rest of you to bring 'em back, so our clerics can raise 'em. Leaving a man behind is unacceptable."

"The magic we're using to disguise you is an artifact the society came across relatively recently, known as the Chalice of Undeath. When used, it gives a creature the semblance of undeath, while the creature remains alive and maintains full control of its soul. Our experiments here show that until the process is reversed—by drinking from the chalice again—you will have the semblance and aura of an undead, and be affected by magic that also affects undead. Be warned that healing magic that affects living creatures will hurt you while you are in this state, just as it would any true undead.

“The Society will teleport you to an isolated position in north-central Geb, near the city of Graydirge but not near enough that anyone should see you suddenly arrive. From there you will need to head toward Corpselight, a small farming town to the east of the city. Joktan was convinced the Testament of Geb was there and that’s where any clues as to his fate will be found. Once your mission is completed, send word via this magic token and we will have you teleported back to Skyreach.”

"I mentioned several resources already -- the chalice, the teleportation -- and you can also have these," Valsin says, taking a flat of eight potion vials of dark purple liquid from his drawer. On each is a label, 'Inflict Moderate Wounds'. "You can also purchase additional items of this sort, or call in favors, from the usual sources."

"The Society has no agents in place in Geb. No local contacts except what you might be able to find while there -- there are living humans there, but most are treated as slaves or cattle, except for those who are powerful necromancers in their own right. I don't know what you'd do with information on their legal traditions, but I can tell you this -- killing intelligent undead is considered murder. Killing the living is like killing a horse or a dog - you'll only get in trouble if someone important owns them."

"You have three hours to prepare, so if you want to spend them in the library looking up what little we know about the Gebbite legal system, you're welcome to do so." He snorts in amusement at the thought. "I expect you back by noon, ready to drink from the chalice and be teleported."

"We're not certain what it looks like -- we're only aware of it through references in other tomes and scrolls. It may be a book, or a scroll, but it was written by the wizard-king Geb before he died and became a ghost himself. That happened in..." Ambrus pauses and opens a reference book on his desk, thumbing through it before continuing, ...the year 632 AR. So it's very old, over 4 thousand years. However, magic preserves things like that, so we have no way of knowing what condition it's in. You'll have to examine the contents to recognize it. Not only does it discuss in depth a number of different types of undead, their creation, and their weaknesses, but it also includes formulae for constructing devastating undead weapons of war."

"Joktan... well, here," says Valsin, handing Velidor a sketch artist's depiction of a young Taldan man, similar to the sketches made of all pathfinder field agents. Ambrus reads briefly from the dossier on the desk in front of him. "Joktan was a specialist in necromantic arts, the type who call themselves 'white necromancers' and use their powers to study ways to defeat the undead and control their spread from havens like Geb. He was also a student of history, specializing in the war between Geb and Nex. He's the one who discovered the Chalice of Undeath, and convinced the Decemvirate to let him use it to make an expedition into the kingdom of Geb. I say 'was', because he's long past the time he expected to check in, so it's pretty likely he's dead by now, in a harsh environment like that. Most likely the entire team is lost, since if even one survived, they could have used their token to request a teleport home. If you can find their bodies, and they haven't been transformed into undead, we'll try to do an extraction-and-raise."

"I understand your reluctance, Mister Shaztub, but look at it this way -- you'll be able to make a raid into the heart of the evil nation of undead itself! The place Joktan determined the Testament of Geb was in a village called Corpselight in the farming country of Geb. They do have farms that grow grain and other food, surprisingly enough, nearly all of it for export. But they also have ranches where they keep humans and other humanoids as if they were cattle. Perhaps you'll have the chance to liberate some of those unfortunates, eh?"

"The effects of the chalice will make you look like well-fed ghouls. You'll grow sharp teeth and claws, which you'll be able to use in a fight if you need to. Your skin will get naturally tougher. Joktan also said he could smell what I had for luncheon from across the room, so there's that."

Undead Anatomy I player information:
To quickly apply the undead anatomy template to your PC, simply add the following to the character:

1. You gain a bite attack that deals 1d6 points of damage if you are Medium or 1d4 points of damage if you are Small.
2. You gain two claw attacks that each deal 1d6 points of damage if you are Medium or 1d4 points of damage if you are Small.
3. You gain darkvision 60 feet and scent.
4. If you are Small, you gain a +1 natural armor bonus. If you are Medium or larger, you gain a +2 natural armor bonus.

Note that in this form, you will detect as an undead creature (such as with detect undead, but not with magic that reveals your true form, such as true seeing) and are treated as undead for the purposes of channeled energy, cure spells, and inflict spells, but not for other effects that specifically target or react differently to undead (such as disrupt undead, hide from undead, and searing light).

"That... I have no idea. I was not actually aware your people could do that. You should do an experiment and see what happens. Make sure to include it in your report."

I'm not actually sure how that will work. I'll do some research and get back to you on that.

Nope. Headband., it's for lending to people.

"Will it increase the distance I can see in the dark if I can already see in the dark?" Veilwar asks Valsin. He then turns to the rest of the group and asks "I can pick up a wand of inflict moderate wounds and a few others (command and disrupt undead, cure light wounds, entangle, scorching ray, and web)but I would be unable to use it without waving it around blindly. Would someone be able to use it if I pick it up? Which of those do you think would come most in handy?"
I would lend the wand to the PC that would be able to use it and get it back at the end of the adventure.

"How about you tell me once you drink it, alright? I know some magic, but I've never used a spell like this one before."

"Anything else? I need to confer with the teleportation experts so we get you close enough to get there, but far enough away that no one will see you arrive."

Darkvision is definitely an ability that depends on your form, so a polymorph spell will change it. So you'll lose darkvision from your race and gain darkvision from the spell, no net change.

"Tell me more of this luck headband, does it have a name? I am interested. Are you able to select who your channeled energy effects? It won't do a bit of good healing us, but could serve as area effect damage against likely foes."

"While inflict light wounds is not a spell that the Prince of Contracts grants his Paladins normally, I could use such a magic item, if the mission required it. Also, I do have disrupt undead available to me, although I have not used it since I was a new agent. I don't suppose any of you have searing light available. That one could be devastating on a mission like this."

Nodding as no further questions are directed towards him, the Venture captain ushers you from his office, and heads elsewhere in Skyreach.

The three hours pass swiftly, and when you return to Valsin's office, his desk is now occupied by a large cup carved from bone and engraved with runic symbols signifying life and death.

Water is poured in from a pitcher, and each of you is given the cup in turn, and drinks.

The process is not pleasant, but can't be called truly painful. Your teeth feel strange, unusually sharp, and your tongue is longer and narrower. Your nails have lengthened and thickened into claws, and your skin has less sensation. You feel cold, deep down to your bones, like being caught in a snowstorm, but the cold causes no pain. Breathing in brings a wealth of strange sensations: suddenly you are fully aware of the presence of the venture-captain and your colleagues, and those who aren't the last to drink can smell immediately when the magic takes hold of the others, for their odor changes instantly.

Looking around, you see that everyone's skin has become grey (in Veilwar's case, greyer, and in Milton's, a subdued greyish-red), eyes red, ears pointed, and if you encountered one another under other circumstances, you would not hesitate to identify the others as ghouls.

The VC nods, pleased with the effectiveness of the disguise, and leads you to the teleportation room. You all stand in the center of an octagram, while the teleportation experts confer, consult maps and books, and make arcane calculations on chalkboards. Just as you are starting to feel anxious, wondering whether there is a problem that will prevent this expedition to the land of the unliving, the preparations are complete and with a few key arcane words, the room vanishes into a shimmer of ethereal mist.

The world materializes into a hazy swamp, the few plants within as dry and colorless as one would expect in a nation ruled and inhabited by the undead.

Examination of the map provided by Valsin indicates the direction of their goal, and the transformed pathfinders set off through the swamp towards Corpselight. The distance is several miles, as the Society picked this remote location to minimize any chance of being spotted.

Need to know marching order and any precautions being taken as you travel through the swamp.
