You are Aspis Consortium operatives, hand-picked by your superiors for one of the most daring missions ever attempted against the hated Pathfinder Society. For centuries the Society has been the hyena of the archaeological world, descending upon legitimate Aspis operations to snatch whatever the Pathfinders want, kill hardworking contractors, and grow wealthy on the profits of their “historical preservation.” As they say, the victors write the history books, and the widely distributed Pathfinder Chronicles paint the Society’s piracy as heroism guided by a moral compass as true as the wayfinder each agent carries.

Despite the thick walls and heavy windows of the rented home that serves as your safe house, the passage of Pathfinders from across the Inner Sea region creates a muted rumble as they make their pilgrimage to the Society’s Grand Convocation, an annual gathering in which Pathfinders tell tales of their exploits, show off their discoveries, and celebrate another successful year. Every additional Pathfinder is another set of eyes to spot trouble and another blade ready to defend the Grand Lodge, yet every voice and footstep makes it even safer to discuss the impending attack.

Within the last twenty four hours you have all received final orders.....

Rataji takes in the awkward silence, then speaks
"Hmmmm. It appears that your superiors have left it to me to brief all of you on what our task entails. Today, aspis agents and sympathizers have been assembled to launch an attack on the pathfinder's society grand lodge under the guise of a festival. While these teams have been gathered for diversion, we are tasked with infiltrating the lodge. Preceding those events however, it has been suggested we prepare by meeting up with informants and laying the groundwork for the assault.

Our objectives is to open the Hao Jin Tapestry gateway and retrieve the sky key, exactly in that order. The target is Skyreach, the cue to enter when the Master of Swords presents a speech and our agents send the pathfinders out of the building. The Tapestry will be housed in the Antamicus Wing of Skyreach, housed by the paranoid Aram Zey.Current instructions only cover how to enter, but not how to exit, though I am sure we will find the relevant notes.

Inside the Tapestry, we will rally with our allies and ascend to the museum to retrieve the Sky Key, which then will be handed to a second team for safe removal. The code phrase given was "Five Fingers till Oathday".It is of utmost importance that we keep the operation clean and resistance is to be expected but given our positions I have confidence this operation will run like clockwork."

Shifting the collar of her glamered armor as to look immaculate and professional. She takes a deep breath as she tucks away a locket containing the pictures of two children back into her misleading vest, Shohiraj speaks in a cold and calculating voice.

"It seems to me that we have a rather herculean and expensive task ahead of us and unless we work together we will fall one by one"
she says as she tightens her hand into a fist causing her already white knuckles to blanch.

"For my part we have received a rather interesting bit of intelligence regarding our deadly enemy" she says as she unrolls a half complete map of the objective. part of my note but not present

pointing to several points on the rough hand drawn map she continues " these are our objectives. In addition the Master of scrolls, who is by our knowledge responsible for the security of the vault has entrusted the keys to one of his underlings" She says as she unrolls another scroll and shows it to the rest of the room in a slow manner.

" This is my priority target. One Janira Gavix, "target JG" or more importantly the keys she possesses" she says letting the name sink into the thicker of the audience.

" JG is of unknown threat level and will be engaged as a last resort. Her supposed fanatical devotion to the master of scrolls makes her immune to bribes and other forms of coercion" she says pausing taking a last second to stair at the portrait that she has engraved into the back of her mind to the point she could draw it blindfolded.

"But like everything she is not without flaw. JG has a love for story telling and will most likely be found near large crowds she says glancing at the group ready to answer any questions they may have.

finally she adds " and remember each bystanders scream, nearby explosion, or track left behind is another complication that may cost us our lives and I will not die because of your lack of discipline in the face of danger she says in a cold but still threatening manner.

A young, attractive Halfling woman in a fashionable outfit glances inquisitively at each of her companions.

"I'm afraid I wasn't told all that much about the mission. Although I do have the name of a contact and a meeting place. The 'Wall of Names', which apparently is some sort of maudlin monument to the incompetent. His information has something to do with magical artifacts, perhaps this 'Sky Key'? Anyway, I don't want to spook him, so I don't want to bring a crowd with me to meet him. I will meet with him on my own, then meet up with the rest of you before the speech. Unless, that is, any of you require assistance with your tasks?"

This last question is accompanied by a raised eyebrow, and a smirk of disdain as she glances at each the other team members in turn.

"I stand ready, my friends. Within the Society of Pathfinders, there is the Hao Jin Tapestry, but so much more. We will take what we need, and turn the Society's greatest weapons against them. Aram Zay will fall. I am tasked with finding a relic, a lantern, that will allow me to steal his soul, in some ways the soul of the entire Society, and harness it. Within, there is a False-Man. A strong terror given life, but beyond control. I will crush Zay's soul into it, and set it loose."

Sense Motive DC 22:
<The Italicized part just above> 322 is not lying, but he is also not telling the full story about this "False-Man". 322 doesn't know, he is embellishing by adding what he thinks will happen.

"We can then use Zay's soul as a bargaining coin, should we need it. I doubt anyone will know what happened, not until they find they can not return him to life by any means, but we have that up our sleeve. After we slay the bastard, that is."

"Finally, the darkness of the space between gives me the ability to heal you, should we need it. It is, however, as I've come to discover, . . . not pleasant for the vic, . . . the target. Know that now. I shall destroy the wounds to your flesh, but you will feel every second of that assault. It is a very obvious and horrific spell, and one I will use publicly. Try not to get hurt, yes."

To drive the point home, 322 removes his dagger, slicing a long deep cut along his wrist, and allowing the blood to flow freely for a moment, as if performing a dark ritual, displaying the wound. He then begins to chant a few words in the forbidden tongue. Suddenly, there is a dark, sickly energy around his lower arm, followed by the blood turning pitch black. He hides his grimace well, knowing all to well what is to happen. Rather than falling, the black blood begins to coil and slither. Suddenly his hand turns a unhealthy pale, then grey, then to dust. It falls to the ground in a thud, from where the wound reached, and begins to warp. Like a swarm of hungry ants, the dark tendrils feast on the flesh as well as the stump, finally reaching out to grasp each other and pulling the fallen appendage back, where it is covered in darkness, rolling over itself. You can hear a crushing sound, bones being popped, muscle being stretched, squeezed, and sucked. And then, it begins to seep back inside, revealing an unwounded hand and lower arm, still pale for a moment until life begins to return. "This is what awaits your failure."

Rataji provides a thin lipped smile back to the halfling before addressing her
"I have no qualms of your ability, though I must ask you take Shohiraj along with you to meet your informant. She is essential to the heist itself and will benefit greatly from being able to question the informant in person.Other than that the rest of us will be fine with our own tasks, though your concern is appreciated."

Good to finally meet this... eclectic team. I will be able to assist any who require it while we are laying the ground work for our operation. A crease of disapproval crosses the Halfling's forehead as she pauses before answering the wizard's direction.

"Fair enough, although I don't really know what intelligence my contact has. It may have nothing to do with the Sky Key. But if the information will help us with our overall mission, another set of ears may prove useful."

Her eyes narrow as Jolyrin turns her attention to the rogue. "You don't have to worry about me blowing our cover. I'm here to get the job done. What's going to blow our cover is a team member not focusing on the job they've been assigned. As for my contact, I have a name, a brief description, and a meeting place, and that's all. Now, I suggest we quit yapping and get on with it."

"A good place to start would be the so-called 'zoological' gardens. There are prisoners there thirsty for their own revenge. If we could find and release some of them, that would provide an enjoyable distraction against the pathfinders."

Marnarius spits out the name 'pathfinders' with disgust.

"I'm not overjoyed about the prospect of going back into the tapestry after being stranded there for several years. On the other hand, many of our fellow Aspis colleagues, including my friends, are there still. Just the prospect of getting them back home to fight the pathfinders will be worth it!"

Ending the speech with a flourish, rataji gestures towards the slayer
"Marnarius, show us the way forward."

Male Human Slayer (inactive)

"Very well. I would hazard a guess that our potential allies in the 'zoo' are probably hidden in a prison not easily found. But I'm sure we have skill and force to access."

Having read through your missives, and be briefed by Rataji, the party now has some time before the main objective is sought.

The heart of the Pathfinder Society is a sprawling campus in Absalom’s Foreign Quarter. Behind its white walls, Pathfinders train for upcoming expeditions, academics study priceless relics recovered from across the globe, and the Decemvirate charts the course for the entire organization from the towering keep Skyreach.

Zurnzal, Marnaius, and Rataji are able to easily find the zoological gardens after a few minutes.

Broad pavilions and awnings shade segmented pens containing animals from around the world, ranging from harmless rodents and fowl to hulking dinosaurs from Tolguth, a giraffe mutated by the Mana Wastes, and war beasts from the Hold of Belkzen. A few heavily reinforced cages hold even stranger creatures, such as an immense two-headed vulture, a ram-headed sphinx, and an armor-plated serpent with fangs the length of a broadsword.

In anticipation of the Grand Convocation, there is an especially high concentration of beasts from the far corners of Avistan and Garund, and a constant parade of sightseers walk past the fenced enclosures. More than a dozen handlers patrol the fences, explaining to onlookers where each creature comes from and other trivia......

-------------

The remainder of the party seeks and finds the Wall of Names.

Trees surround the small hill that bears a curving wall of black glass, providing visitors some privacy as they read any of the thousands of Pathfinder names inscribed on the surface. More trees grow in tight formation to the west, where the copse abuts the Grand Lodge’s wall.

Despite the huge number of visitors at the Grand Lodge, the Wall of Names has relatively few visitors; most Pathfinders visit the site either before or after the Grand Convocation’s main festivities—the better to reflect in peace. Even with the numerous trees that shield the monument, the dull roar of agents testing each other’s wits, theories, and strength invades this solemn space.

A lone man stands near the Wall of Names. He slowly walks up and down the length of the monument, reading names and nervously touching a leather portfolio......
