In a concentrating tone, Mel replies to Valik, "a secret door for absent minded folk. I believe this inscription here is a clue on how to open it. Such a clue should be obvious to anyone the creator wanted to pass through and meaningless to everyone else. My scroll let me read the Varesian words, but their meaning escapes me." he finishes with a sigh, crumpling the remnants of the used scroll.

"Have a look. Does that riddle mean anything to you or is the figure familiar? "

Ylandria responds to Quiella's question, "It's not all that large down there from what I'm told, you should be able to find them pretty quick."

Valik ponders the cryptic clue, as the storm’s fury bends the strongest tree, so can the wrath of man turn aside all obstacles.

I am unsure what it could mean.

per T10: 10 + 16 = 26 for any clues on how to open the door, any obstacles down here other than the door?

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

Undoubtedly the easiest way to open the door is to figure out the riddle and use that knowledge to open it.

Failing that, an attempt can probably be made to disable the locking mechanism like any other door, although if magic is being utilized to lock it then that may be more difficult than normal.

On the other hand, if the way to open the door is magical, then perhaps a Use Magic Device check might work.

Are there any checks that might help shine light on the riddle? Are the words of historical or religious significance; would someone who grew up speaking Varisian be able to recognize nuances in the words; anything of the sort?

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

There's really no additional clues you can determine from the inscription, although the wording does suggest some sort of nature motif, but that might not be the key to the answer.

Both Quiella and Melufiuos take a crack at the stele in an attempt for force it open, but neither attempts works. After a couple of minutes of trying, however, Quiella finally tricks it into opening. Just want to keep things moving with the time limit and the holidays coming up. The DC for UMD is lower than Disable Device, so Quiella would have probably gotten first.

As the passage opens, Ylandria excuses herself with, "Some of our gang are likely down there. If they are, they might not’ve been able to get out, with this door in the way. I’ll keep it open so you can send them up."

Looking past the door, you see a dark, damp stairway that leads down to the south, slowly curving westward as it descends. Its walls are reinforced with wooden supports, and the western wall is set with empty alcoves, each several inches deep, suitable for displaying religious icons or similar small relics.

Feel free to adjust the marching order. Since we haven't heard from Halkale in almost 3 weeks, I'm going to leave Frostfur on the surface for now.

At the bottom of the stairs, the group finds a sturdy 10-foot-by-40-foot stone chamber that appears less damaged by the wet conditions than the damper areas of the crypt, and no supports are positioned here to hold the roof up. "This crypt is symbolic," Ophelia murmurs, running a hand over one of the lids. "Made to honour the memories of those lost at sea, where their bodies could not be recovered. Their loved ones having nothing to mourn..." A chill runs down her spine, and she wraps her arms around herself briefly.

Sorry for my absence. Good to move on.

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

After a brief examination of the crypt, the party moves through the eastern door and onto the next area. This massive room’s most striking feature is its thirty-foot-high vaulted ceiling, decorated with faded frescoes of storm clouds. Motes of flickering light occasionally flash into being within the painted thunderheads, giving the imperfect impression of watching a distant storm.

Centered on the north wall of the chamber is a massive sculpture of a wrathful feminine face, mouth open in a silent roar. The sculpted curls of her wild hair seamlessly merge with the painted storm clouds above, creating the impression that the howling face emerges from a storm-filled sky.

On the room’s south side is a similarly positioned face, resembling an ancient, bearded man. From between his defiantly clenched teeth issues a trickle of murky fluid, which runs down the knotted coils of his beard to pool onto the stone floor, which has been cut to resemble a fanciful variety of coastlines and islands, each raised an inch above the rest of the stone surface.

The fluid pouring onto the floor fills the low-lying areas between these “islands,” which function as eccentrically positioned steppingstones across the center of the room. The water and islands create another illusion—that of looking out across a great reflective seascape from the peak of an incredibly high mountain.

The grandeur of the room is somewhat undone by the two makeshift worktables positioned in its center, surrounded by benches and stools. The worktables are littered with a variety of small objects, statues, bits of pottery, and assorted relics. On the east side of the room, a split staircase leads to a wide platform ten feet above the floor, where a similarly cluttered worktable stands. Sturdy wooden doors are set into the east and west walls.

Standing around the tables are six sallow youths dressed in Twincandles colors who are all working silently with soft brushes to clean and sort the bits of ephemera placed before them. Standing on the platform on the east side of the room are two rough looking men holding crossbows. They immediately notice the strangers at the door. One of the crossbowmen shouts out a strange word, and an arc of electricity hits each of the island-like stepping stones, while water pours of the mouth of the female's face, forming a small water elemental. Both men on the eastern platform then fire bolts at Quiella, but the projectiles bounce off her armor.

Since Halkale's status is uncertain, he cannot see inside the room, and likely would not want to be the first inside the room, I'm delaying him until everyone else goes, or upon his return.
