A tall, attractive Taldan woman, in full battle regalia stands, tapping her foot, her obvious annoyance at being made to wait becoming ever more obvious to the group of Pathfinders assembled in the Venture-Captain's waiting room. Already annoyed that she has been assigned to go to the hated enemy of Qadira, her patience is at an end.

However, she was also taught to be better than those around her. So, she decides that it is time to start sharpening her nodachi. After all, if she is to go to battle, her equipment must be in perfect shape. Looking at the dull black blade, she shakes her head, realizing that were she to use a stone on it, she would up with two, smaller stones. This sky-metal the dwarves in Maheto made this weapon from is stronger than anything she has seen before, and she still doesn't quite trust it.

"So, maybe introductions are in order. I am Lady Natalia Landros. I serve Aroden, Taldor and the Society, in that order. I am a paladin of The Last of the Azlanti, though many scoff at that claim. My sword arm is as strong as my faith, and I rely on both in battle. I am also well trained as a diplomat, so can speak on behalf of our team as needed.

"One warning, though. I am told that I suffer from an unfortunate affliction. In combat, I am told that I can only understand Celestial and Infernal. So, if one or more of you understand these languages, it would be quite helpful to us. Otherwise, in the heat of battle I may not pay heed to your requests.

"Also, while I am able to cast healing spells, my abilities to heal while in combat are limited. I usually prefer to hit hard, heal later, as a strong offense is often the strongest defense. That, and fifty pounds of strong, Taldan steel wrapping your body."

She turns to the much-titled cleric of Erastil, asking, "And who might you be?"

A small red haired gnome (all thought his hair color is difficult to determine most of the time since he will be covered from head to toe in ash, soot and other blackish stuff) looks around.

"Nice to meet you Lady Nathlia Landros who serves Aroden, Taldor and the Scoiety ..I am Ash. Are you happy to see me? Most people don't seem to be happy when they see me"

Ash takes Bathlia's hand and shakes it vigorously leaving sooth marks all over it

"How are you doing? I don't speak Celestial or Infernal, can you teach me? Do you know who those other people are? Do you think they will introduce themselves to us?"

Ash glances around.

"I am Yanos, a simple war,"the tall Ulfen man begins to speak, but is cut off by some unseen voice just behind him.

"Come now, noble sir, spit it all out. Can you not see that they all await the blessings of thine very name? Surely thou canst be so rude as to deny them?"

Both embarrassed and irritated, the tall man tries once more to say his piece, "I am Yanos, a simple priest-warrior of Ol' Dead Eye. Unfortunately, m'lady, I speak neither the sacred tongue nor that abomination. And I too", bending to kiss her hand, albeit a bit old fashionedly, "how shall we say, like to work with my hands and faith."

Turning towards Mr. Ash, he extends a cordial hand, but instead of shaking it (if offered), he instead pulls the hardy Gnomish man in for a powerful bear hug greeting. "And why, little brother, would anyone not be happy to see you? If they give you any trouble, bother, . . ."
Suddenly cut off once more by that same disembodied, archaic voice from before, "Will you stop it with the "brother" talk. You do understand that brother and sister have an actual meaning, yes? It means you meatbodie's parents had another child other than you. It doesn't apply to just any meatbody you stumble upon."

Seeming to ignor the voice, Yanos continues, "Well, if you have any trouble, BROTHER, with anyone not being happy to see you, jus' let me know, ok. I'll make them weep like a Chelish whoreKnight." he says with a smile.

A short (5'), but imposing tiefling enters the room. With black and red platemail armor and a black tabard with Asmodeus' star on it, he is quite clearly a follower of the Prince of Darkness. His black hat is betassled with red balls, which seem a bit foppish on a man with such large tusks. With a dark black set of manacles hanging at his waist opposite the cold iron mace, he looks like a man ready for any eventuality.

"This is the material I am asked to work with? The Prince of Pride deserves more, but sometimes we must make do with what we are provided." Milton takes a deep breath, "Alright, I am Milton, as briefly as possible, I will need you each to describe how you can be useful to the upcoming mission. To show that there is no mal intent in my request, I will begin. I bring brains, brawn, leadership, and a devotion to the mission that might allow for each of you to die and be left along the wayside while I continue on, should the mission require it. So then, who is next?"

Indeed in the last weeks something strange happened to you.
Each one of you was approached by an agent of the Society and summoned to Katheer, to meet there with Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi.
Most of you unused to the heat, you hung out in the relative cool of the Pathfinder Lodges lounge, as a white clad servant appears, interrupting your boasting and ushering you up the stais into the Venture Captains office.

Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi sits behind his immaculately clean desk with his head in his hands. He sighs, takes a deep breath, and rises to address his guests.
Originally, I wasn’t planning on sending a team back out to the Zho Mountains. The risk of losing another team is, frankly, too high. If that weren’t enough of a reason, the Society’s assault on the Worldwound has left the lodge’s coffers much lighter — too light to fund another expedition into dangerous territory so soon. However, following some conversations with fellow agents, I am reminded that all Pathfinders must come home — no matter the cost, no matter the danger. The lessons of the Shadow Lodge still resonate.
He nods toward a Pathfinder who stands silently in the corner. In fact, the recent disappearance in the Zho Mountains has brought a surge of monetary support from the onetime disciples of Grandmaster Torch. It was enough to finance your voyage here, and I would happily provide you the remainder if you succeed.
The venture-captain takes a few steps toward a map of Qadira hanging from his wall. Six years ago, a team of Pathfinders received a map of an unexplored area in the Zho Mountains, and ever since they have stayed busy surveying the region and sending me updates. Until recently, they had uncovered only a few dozen small sites and a plethora of new plant and animal species, but their most recent update referenced a large illusory barrier. Since then we have not heard from them, and I believe they found something dangerous beyond.

I ask that you use what notes I have on file to track down these agents and make sure they return safely. Investigating the nature of this illusory... field, barrier, shield... is secondary at best. Esmayl pauses for a moment before continuing. If you have any questions, I shall answer them as best I can, though most of what the Society knows about the mountains is in the logbooks of those agents.Questions please.

Might be some did more than slumping in easy chairs since the arrival in Katheer. Check your knowledge and take the opportunity to boast about it in front of a Venture Captain and fellow agents!

Diplomacy (gather information) or Knowledge (local)10+:
It is common knowledge that the Zho Mountains are home to feral beasts, draconic monsters, and other
dangerous creatures.

Diplomacy (gather information) or Knowledge (local)20+:
Qadira’s spellcasters have long practiced elemental magic and conjured genies, and geniekin are relatively common in the region. It is believed that most have gravitated toward settlements in the Zho Mountains, though nobody seems able to confirm this rumor.

Diplomacy (gather information) or Knowledge (local)25+:
The few explorers who’ve tried to locate these communities have found the mountains to be deceptively
difficult to navigate, and what looks like a mountain pass from afar is often merely a mirage.

Knowledge (geography)15+:
Although the mountains rarely more than 2 miles high, they are nonetheless a formidable barrier between
Qadira’s Ketz and Meraz Deserts.

Knowledge (geography)20+:
Two of the most famous peaks are Zhonar and Zhobl, a pair of large volcanoes that violently erupted
nearly a thousand years ago.

Suddenly standing tall in the middle of the speech, Yanos can't help but shout "SHADOW LODGE FOR LIFE!!!" Um, Um, sorry."

After he has finished, Yanos takes a few minutes to let it all sink it, scribbling small notes in his journal, before asking any questions.

"I too have a friend that was on that job. I was with the team that first discovered the map as we travelled through the mountains to lay the body of an old friend and mentor to rest (VC Targos). The more information we can get on these missing students will help us greatly to help them. What can you tell us of the missing agents? Do we have any ideas on how or where they vanished? Has there been any ransom requests? Any indications on how they might have gotten "beyond" this barrier?

"Venture Captain, you need not lecture me on the costs of the assault on the Worldwound. I saw that cost myself, as hundreds of brave crusaders fought to their last under my command. I could not have been more proud of their unfailing devotion to duty and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice against the demo hordes, and I read over the rolls of their names nightly," He pulls forth and brandishes some pieces of parchment from his belt and continues on, "would that more breathed still this day! but rest assured that I will lead this expedition with the same devotion to duty I showed then. Might I ask just how expendable the Pathfinders under my command on this expedition are to be considered? "A more noble sentiment has never been spoken or heard."

Esmayl ibn Qaradi gives Yanos a level look:
Yes, the Shadow Lodge. Some of their former more influential members visited helping me recall their lessons. They also gave me those to help the agents, meaning you in this case.
He points at his desk, where a near array of crucibles, vials and skillets is gathered.
Luckily for you, they are labeled and the party receives a potion of remove curse, a potion of cure serious wounds, six potions of endure elements, and 2 doses of oil of taggit.

The map was gifted to us by Jamila al-Shafah for protecting a critical caravan already six years ago. I doubt that this is a trap. More likely the exploration team has suffered a bad accident or met something they could not overcome. I hope you will find something more than their bodies. Or at least find their bodies at all. If they got eaten up, there won´t be bodies left i guess. Anyway, it´s your job to go there now and find out what happened.

He then looks at Milton and Vrockwing.
Not sure where you have been lately, as well as Natalia, but the nations influence and represantions here have been cut down severely.
You might also not forget, that you are on Qadiran territory now. Perhaps you are graced with the sense to see that a loud poise as chelaxian or especially taldan agents here might upset a lot of people and bring you in all manner of situations that might distract you form your mission.
He raises his voice.
You´re not freshmen anymore, that´s why you are here. So focus on your mission! Continuing with a normal voice.
You have any other questions? Seems all of you know the shadow lodge, the Zho mountains and have no real interest in your fellow pathfinders. Well, never mind. I recommend you prepare yourselves, this is a major trip, it´s hot up there and dry. But as experienced agenrs you know how to field such a trip, don´t you?

Lady Natalia replies to Milton, "Inimicus inimici mei amicus meus? Interim ego assentior, propter missionem. Sed mihi non transeunt, aut equos."

Infernal:
'The enemy of my enemy is my friend? For the moment, I shall agree, for the sake of the mission. But do not cross me, or our team."

Note, this is how I've typically handled it. I think Latin is a good choice for Infernal ;) Course, it could be horrid Latin, as that is from Google translate.

"We shall endeavor to recover these Pathfinders to the best of our abilities. Rest assured, Venture Captain, I was well trained in the arts of diplomacy, and can easily keep my true feelings hidden. Years of dealing with the Bearded, and years of having to defend my beliefs against the Unbelievers, have taught me the value in that. Perhaps I shall even find some nobles who would agree with Lady Glorianna about the call of nobility being stronger than national ties?

"However, I cannot vouch for these... Chelaxians. However, I will agree to work with them."

She contemplates what she has learned of this area, as knowledge of one's enemy can be one of the strongest weaspons. "Yanos probably already knows some of this, but where we are heading is a treacherous place. feral beasts and draconic beasts run rampant," she says. 'Maybe I'll get the chance to match Magnus's count in dragons, though I don't think I'll be charging any huge black dragons up there' She continues, "We should also expect to encounter a variety of geniekin, perhaps the source of the illusions that are often found up there. We must be careful, for often the passes we head towards are mirages, or worse."

"Who were the pathfinder agents that we seek? It would be helpful to know everything you do about them. Do we have access to their logbooks? That might also be helpful. Out of curiosity, is there any reason that you know of that the former members of the Shadow Lodge might specifically be interested in this area?"

My Latin is too far away to comment on the quality^^

The Venture Captain arks his eyebrows, but then dismisses the topic of nations.
The map we received six years ago corresponded with rumors of a great treasure that was said to lie hidden in the Zho Mountains. The mountains
are also ill documented, making them a natural subject for Pathfinder investigation. I don´t know why the shadow lodge is interested in that specific area, i guess it´s more about the agents. You remember the lodge’s ideals: hold the higher-ups accountable, and assist the common Pathfinder when disaster strikes. I´m pretty sure for those agents disaster was striking, in whichever form. Well, despite the rogue elements that were in the Shadow Lodge, a lot of their agents did good and to some i owe. That´s the repay now.

I already have one I don't mind burning for the party. Unlike some other "paladins", um um :P

Having Energy Resist 5, I interpret that I am not in danger of outdoorsy winter coldness.

Normally, if you have Fire/Cold resistance, you are not immune to hazardous environments, but sort of are.

Typically they deal 1d6 damage, so if your Resistance negates that, you also negate any conditions that might come with that, such as Fatigue or hypothermia, or the normal Fort Saves per hour/minutes.

However, if the environment rolls a 6, (meaning you take 1 damage), then you are fully affected by everything else, too. If you have Resistance 1o+ (or 6), your are effectively immune.

Metal constructs? We don´t have those here. Only some elementals and other desert dangers. If that´s all, maybe you should be on your way. Oh before i forget it, here take those notes. It´s a compilation of the last teams reports we have gathered.

As you are finished preparing and about to leave, an agent leading a dozen horses and wearing a wayfinder meets you, loans you horses, and offers you luck in the name of the Shadow Lodge. Your journey to the Zho Mountains is relatively uneventful, and you reach the foothills in a less than a week.
The first Pathfinder team’s notes and maps provide an incomplete picture of the mountain range and its myriad pathways.
You think you are on the right way, but you need to find the other teams trail....

Perception or survival checks please, aid another is cool, or if you have, more sophisticated means of finding things^^

Very nice check Ash!

Milton is able to find several landmarks described in the Pathfinders journal and on the map, while others aid him. But in the end, it´s Ash who sees some footprints and leftovers in the sand that indicate a clear direction. You follow that route.
The trail winds around and over several of the lower peaks, gradually taking you several dozen miles into the Zho Mountains and several thousand feet higher in altitude. Signs of the first groups’ progress vanish as you enter an alpine meadow filled with scrub brush and dry grasses that cling to the thin soil. Suddenly, this arid, milelong mountain cove dead-ends, yet you are sure there was no other way.
What do you do?

"Smells like illusion magic to me," Hagrym grumbles as he casts Detect Magic, and examines the area, especially the dead end.

+2 if the Map applies.

On the way, Yanos will try to read through the reports, taking small notes in his journal as he reads.

Wow, yah, one day I might actually roll a Nat 20 in combat with my freakin' spear. :P As we set out, can I retroactively use my wand to Endure Elements on the party. It probably will not help for the altitude, but you never know.

On the way, Yanos will (possibly) recall some of the sites he witnessed before, and keep an eye out for that thrice bedamned lost tower-temple of Irori from last time in the area.

It was an encounter site, likely not in this one.

Suddenly, coming to the abrupt "dead end", "Hum, well, perhaps we can climb over it? I can always fly over, maybe see what's on the other side? What do you think, Minionton? Can ya handle a bit of physical hand's on?"

Milton bristles briefly. "You would think that being a human yourself, that you would have better mastery over one of their languages. Sometimes the truth defies logic. Now get up there and figure this out and report back. Pretty please."
