GM Lupulus |
Dahrani's owl distracts him enough to break his fascination. But Amarsia is still stuck by the haunting mumbling.
Two new spiritual forms emerge right out of the floor, and rush at Nox and Sieglinde. They appear like more students, twisted like Cassiel, but in a solid ectoplasmic form.
Slam Nox: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Damage Nox: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Slam Sieglinde: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Damage Sieglinde: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Nox is hit, and gets covered in some kind of ectoplasmic ooze.
Nox Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Their arrival and attacks do shake Amarsia free from her fascination.

"My weapon does nothing!" cries Sieglinde as she drops her bow and steps around this new spirit, pulling out her scimitar as she does so."Dahrani, do you have another of those oils?" She holds her weapon tightly in both hands and slashes at this new opponent - it at least looks solid!
Scimitar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Slashing damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Sieglinde drops her bow, takes a 5 ft step (drawing her scimitar as she does so), and whacks the spirit next to her. GM, this spirit can treat her AC as 2 lower because it is not the target of her smite.
Nox Pembrook |
"Oww," Nox murmurs, stepping back and using the stored healing charge on herself instead of the ghosts.
clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
"Feel free to back me up here, folks."
Balfour Granitehead |
Entering Rage.
"Let me help you there, Sieglinde," Balfour says as he swings his sword at the twisted ectoplasmic student. "This blade can slice through most solid things."

GM Lupulus |
Sieglinde misses her target.
Balfour slices right through the ectoplasmic form, downing it.
Nox uses her charge to heal herself.
Eminesa sends another missile of force into the incorporeal hateful spirit.
Cassiel attacks Grishan again. "You hid her from me! You can't have her! She has to stay here now!"
Touch Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Wisdom Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4

The owl makes its way to Sieglinde with an oil of magic weapon in its grasp for her.
Amarsia misses with her chilly ray.
The ectoplasmic spirit chases down Nox to attack again.

Sieglinde uses her move action to receive the oil from Kaepora and her standard to apply it to her scimitar, then takes a 5 ft step closer to Cassiel.
GM Lupulus |
Eminesa's missile hits Cassiel and causes the apparition to shriek, then begin to fade.
Nox and Sieglinde make more preparations, and an ectoplasmic student still remains.

"Step back, Dahrani, this could get dirty. I think. Honestly don't know how much of a mess killing a ghost leaves."
Balfour rushes to the front line, taking a wild swing at the other ectoplasmic enemy.
Greatsword + Rage - Power Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 3 - 1 = 16, Damage: 2d6 + 5 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (2, 6) + 5 + 2 + 3 = 18

GM Lupulus |
Balfour and Dahrani cut down the last opponent.
As the metaphorical dust metaphorically settles, the specters of three children appear, Cassiel among them. They appear much more calmer and more distant now. Cassiel's spirit speaks "Thank you for freeing us, something dark took hold, but now it is gone. Goodbye, Junia..." The three spirits fade from view.
NPC Lupulus |
J. recovers some but still appears very freaked out by the incident. "I guess not every supernatural encounter can be resolved with kind words..."
Grishan explains "That was the same evil that stalked us when I hid J. for all those years. I don't know if it had taken hold of Cassiel then, but things should be better here now. Thank you for seeing to J.'s safety; we can leave now if there's nothing further for you all...
Sieglinde |
Sieglinde is not certain the danger has passed (and is somewhat disappointed she didn't get to smite anyone), and scans the area with detect evil before sheathing her scimitar and retrieving her bow.
"Do you know what evil it was?" she asks Grishan finally.
GM Lupulus |
@Sieglinde I know right? In my limited experience, I always think they throw too many exotic defenses at parties in tier 1-2 scenarios.
Sieglinde doesn't detect any more evil. Defeating whatever Cassiel was and releasing her seems to have cleansed this place greatly.
If someone can make a good Knowledge Religion check you might recognize more about what you fought.
NPC Lupulus |
J. nods her agreement that she is ready. "Yes I think I've seen everything I need to here. We can go home now."
Grishan stares to the spot where Cassiel's haunted form once stood, thinking. "My memories of then are fuzzy, and I doubt I understood it all anyway. After I died, I just knew something evil was stalking about, and stayed behind to hide J.'s soul from whatever it was - I think it was that thing though."
I'll wait a while before moving on if anyone has anything else to say or do.
Nox Pembrook |
Nox is satisfied that the danger has passed for now. She uses a quick healing hex on herself (clw: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2) and can do so for anyone else that may require it as well.
"I am glad this worked out for you, J. Experiences with the unquiet dead have left emotional scars on many." She smiles kindly patting her girl on the arm. Quietly she hopes that this evil force does not return in their absence.
NPC Lupulus |
Grishan answers Nox's concern. "I think Cassiel is truly free now. You destroyed the evil force and everything should get better here now. Let's go home now J."
Junia nods. "Yes thank you all for everything you did today. Let's leave this place behind."
GM Lupulus |
You make your way out of the necropolis and past the haunted classroom. If Sieglinde tries to detect evil again, she will happily find that the haunt has completely dissipated and won't be returning.
As you are about to leave the Precipice Quarter, you see a man in a uniform similar to Junia’s, but with more medals and polish, emerges from a side alley at a brisk pace. Many if not all of you recognize the man - Colson Maldris - as the leader of the Liberty's Edge faction, as well as Grishan's brother.
Junia quietly mutters something under her breathe. "Brother is here" Grishan quickly vanishes as he harbors in her mind again.
The man spots you all and approaches to address the party. "Finally, I found you... I heard around the lodge that a team of Pathfinders was headed in to the Tri-Towers Yard." He bows his head. "My brother was one of many children who died when the earthquake hit. As a result, I take great interest in expeditions leading in to that cursed site. The last Pathfinder expedition seven years ago found his body, and as a result, my family was able to give him a proper burial. Those agents also found some..." he pauses, and then continues delicately, "reports about my brother’s after-school activities that would have been quite embarrassing if made public. Did you, by chance, find any information about my brother?"
Dahrani Al-Jahron-PFS |
Dahrani, somewhat intimidated by meeting face-to-face with his faction leader, loudly clears his throat and starts looking towards his team members for some diplomatic assistance.
"Well, we did... sort of... find some notes... that your brother took. They aren't exactly kind..."
Sheepishly, Dahrani hands over the packet of notes to Maldris for him to review.
GM Lupulus |
Colson reads through Grishan's notes, sighs, and asks the party "May I keep these? I know they look bad and I imagine you know they are valuable to various buyers, but I only wish to keep them out of the public eye. They are obviously damaging to many people, but more than my own personal reputation I am concerned for the harm to come to Liberty's Edge if I should be so tarnished. By extension, the efforts of many Pathfinders who work tirelessly under our banner to promote the cause of freedom could be at stake!"
Despite holding the documents already, Colson holds the papers out to you, clearly leaving the decision in your hands.
Eminesa |
"I believe these should be destroyed. They are not 'useful' information; they are only useful as blackmail material."
This appears to be somewhere the L.E. faction characters should take the lead, so I won't insist if others disagree with me.
Balfour Granitehead |
"I agree that this is intended to be nothing more than blackmail material, but I trust the head of Liberty's Edge to not abuse these. After all, if anything, these are now a memento from your lost brother."
Sieglinde |
Also not Liberty's Edge, so feel free to overrule this too.
Sieglinde gives Eminesa a hard stare. "The truth will be known," she says, "one way or another. The difference is if you try to hide from the truth, or if you face it and then make things better." A tear comes to her eye, as if she's had to practice what she's preaching before, but she ignores it. "Are you brave enough?" she challenges both Eminesa and Colson.
Nox Pembrook |
Nox has no intention of damaging those of Liberty's Edge. They are a rather noble group after all. "If the information contained within is true, it may still come out. Perhaps it would be better to get out in front of it, now, or very soon, to lessen the impact, to deal with the problem head on. I'm sure the Pathfinders will stand behind the reputation that you've earned." She shrugs her shoulders. "Please consider that option, whether or not these papers are kept or destroyed."
GM Lupulus |
Taking it the group is defering to Liberty's Edge members, have 2 votes of three to let Colson keep it. If Colson is to be believed and trusted, then letting him keep them is effectively similar to destroying the documents anyway.
Colson takes the documents back and responds to some of the party's concerns. "Rest assured I have no intention to use these, they will be kept secure. I do not think releasing them to the Society in general or disseminating the information would lessen their impact. It's not an issue of bravery, just the realities of how these could damage the cause of freedom." He sighs. "The days before this cloak and dagger were simpler, yes? Thank you, not releasing these to the wrong hands is a great boon to Liberty's Edge, and the Society."
Colson bows politely and departs.
NPC Lupulus |
After Colson is out of sight and the party starts walking back toward the manor, J. adds "Thank you. From me and Grishan too."
Grishan emerges again. "I always wanted to be an Eagle Knight like Colson. He got his wings so young, and I wanted to follow him anywhere, and fight for freedom, no matter what. I'm glad we could help him."
NPC Lupulus |
As you are walking back, Junia is silent for a bit, but then addresses the group again. "Grishan and I have been talking. We can both finally leave the past behind, and we know what we want to do next. I can't follow in my mother's footsteps..." She looks a bit sheepish. "I wanted to know if you could sponsor me to join the Pathfinder Society?"
Sieglinde |
"Gladly," says Sieglinde with a smile. "Shall we take you back to the Lodge with us now?"
Nox Pembrook |
Nox was pleased with J's choice. "I have no doubt that you will become an excellent Pathfinder, J. And it certainly seems more to your personality than the life your mother has planned for you."
GM Lupulus |
In the coming days Junia Dacilane does enroll to be a Pathfinder. She send you each a note saying she hopes she can help you out sometime soon.
Grateful for the handling of the intelligence packet, Colson Maldris sends a decent sum of money as a reward.
Still involved in the digs in the Precipice Quarter, Venture-Captain Dreng reports that the haunts at the Drownyard have all disappeared, and he thanks you for your efforts.
If you have any more follow up, feel free, but otherwise this concludes the scenario!
