Can we destroy the mechanism that delivers the darts and stabilize the front of the logs so they don't fall out? I'm assuming they're piled up in a group to fall. Or do we need Disable Device for that?
//Oloch\\ |
As far as the K. Engineering goes, it shouldn't be too big of a deal to block the logs from rolling when the trap is triggered. As for the poison traps, maybe use your engineering to make something like a large wooden shield or backstop to catch the arrows and place it in front of the traps. We render the traps useless before we trigger them. Its kinda like using mental disable device! it would, of course, be up to the GM as to how difficult these tasks would be...
GM Baerlie |
I guess we're at a lost since no one has Disable Dev?
Yes, this is a weak point in this scenario which I'm going to point out in a review. And this is the reason why I let you use Knowledge engineering to find another solution, meaning a DC20 Kn. eng. is necessary to make the traps useless.
Archibald Peck |
Archie begins coaching Lucia, giving her a speech on creativity and using motivational buzzwords to fill her with confidence.
Inspire Competence +3 is the best I can do for you
Yoshi Masaso |
"Men are riding horses into war. These are animals just like that. We do not do this to torture them, but for a purpose. "
And maybe you can tell that Yoshi is not good as such.
Yoshi does what he can to assist, but really he doesn't know a lot about engineering.
know(eng) assist: 4d20 ⇒ (11, 17, 7, 8) = 43
That is a successful assist on the first two, but not the last two traps. Assuming we don't use summoned monsters for the poison darts, which I think is probably the best way.
Lucia Deedlit |
Lucia takes her time to disable the falling logs traps.
For the darts the most easy a safer option is summon monster I so she will do it.
Knownledge Engineering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Knownledge Engineering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
As for who can help and how to apply it, I will let the GM decide if more than one can help and who helps.
Archibald Peck |
Well I am more than willing to use two uses of my Bardic Music and Oloch has guidance as an orison so if he uses it on you to assist (and he should since it is literally a 0 cost action) you pass on both meeting the DC 20 even without aid another.
GM Baerlie |
I'm not the cruel kind of GM, so...
Assisted by Yoshi and Archibald Lucia prepares some mechanism to block the logs from rolling onto the road and it works. After setting off the poisoned dart traps with summoned monsters she sets off the log traps and the logs get blocked by a nets mounted between trees.
The rangers seem to be satisfied and head back to the camp to prepare the caravan to leave as soon as possible. Which means the next morning, in the meantime you have time to tend to the injured and sick, you can do two more heal checks, Oloch and Shagratt already made two.
"I promised the mayor I would bring the Pathfinders to town on time, so hurry!" Visser shouts and shoos people around.
Lucia Deedlit |
She will buy before going out weapon bleach(cold iron) for the sword, if possible.
Heal(untrained): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Heal(untrained): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6
GM Baerlie |
No, I think it's faster to assume you keep it up all the time.
Oloch, Shagratt and Lucia help treating the poisoned Travelers. The poison which sickened the people was spider venom, a common poison which is not too hard to cure. Once night falls you are invited to have a small dinner with Visser at the campfire.
"Please sit down." Visser says.
Yoshi Masaso |
Yoshi sits and listens intensely. His somewhat squashed nose pointing in the direction of Visser.
"Are there likely to be more traps?" he asks, having seen first hand what the traps can do to people and summoned creatures.
Sorry for the delay, Yoshi is more than happy to assist with healing as well, but is untrained. Checks for assists would have been 2d20 ⇒ (8, 7) = 15
Archibald Peck |
Archie sits in a formal style similar to the way the Tian Xia sit, by folding his legs under his body and using them as a sort of seat, a style speaking to how well-traveled he has become.
I am listening Visser, what troubles your mind?
GM Baerlie |
"No, there are no more traps." the man says with a smile "I want to thank you for your help. And I want to offer you a present. You all get a highly trained Embeth Hound tomorrow morning when we leave. Embeth Hounds are riding dogs which are skilled at climbing and swimming. They are also trained for combat and know how to track. I think they can help you in your mission." Jamel Visser offers while handing you some bread and meat.
GM Baerlie |
According the dog's stats: they are riding dogs, who receive a +4 racial bonus on all Climb and Swim checks in place of a riding dog’s typical +4 racial bonus on Acrobatic checks while jumping
The night falls and the preparations are finished. The Embeth Travelers prepare for the night. After Visser selected some rangers for the night watch everybody else goes to sleep. The night is uneventful, from time to time you hear the watch guards report and change. The next morning the caravan is ready to leave.
Approximately half a mile outside Uringen, Visser calls a halt to the caravan, gesturing you forward. Raising his voice over the jingle of yokes and the rattle of wagon wheels, Visser booms out, "Halt!"
Dismounting from his horse, he gestures down the road. "About half a mile down that road, you’ll be in Uringen. Desna smile upon you in that place." Visser pulls an oilskin folio out of his saddlebags. "Since you’ve been right useful this trip, I was hoping you could carry these reports to Mayors Mieren and Ogden, since you’ll be in town anyway. I’ll put in a good word for you as well; maybe you’ll get something from them for it."
Lucia Deedlit |
"Thanks for your guide. We will help with something like that"
She looks happy to go ahead the solitary road carrying the message.
Archibald Peck |
Archie gives a deep bow I will of course include your fine service here in my chronicle of this incident - perhaps we may make use of your services again some day
//Oloch\\ |
Oloch bows in thanks. "You have my word that we will complete your request, sir. Our thanks for your hospitality and help." With these words, Oloch begins to follow the trail pointed out.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Checking for any dangers, and keeping my eyes open along the path for any fey or their traps.
GM Baerlie |
Your paths split at this point, Visser and his caravan move on while you head towards Uringen.
The town of Uringen is a flurry of activity. Puffs of multicolored smoke rise from tall stone chimneys that emerge from steeply pitched rooftops, and people dressed sharply in black and white shuffle about the town, preparing for the convergence. The divide between the two halves of the town is stark. A wide street, 20 feet across at its widest, separates the static and unstuck portions of the town. Boarded windows and prominent “closed” signs decorate the static half of the town, whose residents speak in hushed and tense tones. In the unstuck half of the town, excitement and curiosity outweigh fear, and groups of people gather in the streets. Above it all, a four-sided tower looks out upon the town, with an enormous clock face decorating each side at its pinnacle.
In the middle of the street between the two halves, a pair of well-dressed figures appears to be locked in a debate, their words clipped and harsh. Their heated conversation is in Skald, with a smattering of words and phrases in Common. The man rests his hand on the hilt of a rapier at his side, while the woman hooks her thumbs in the wide sash wrapped around her body. A tiny blue-skinned humanoid with iridescent blue butterfly wings flits behind the woman’s head, a miniscule pair of pince-nez perched upon his pert nose.
You identify the pair as the mayors of Uringen, Knavar Mieren and Aurelia Ogden.
You recognize the butterflywinged humanoid as a pixie.
Lucia Deedlit |
She moves near them and try to mediate between the parts.
"Wait for a second, I am sure we can find something in common to agree with"
Knowledge (local) : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Knowledge (nature) : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Yoshi Masaso |
Yoshi looks at the two arguing.
know(local): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
"They are being the mayors of the town." whispers Yoshi.
"Let us deliver our letters."
GM Baerlie |
"Who are you?" Mayor Mieren asks. He crosses his wiry arms over his broad chest. Aurelia Ogden looks at you. She retains some of her youthful good looks, the barest grace of silver among sun-bleached brown hair at her temples and crow’s feet around her brown eyes are the only real sign of her age. "The nature of our dispute is that I invited agents of the Pathfinder Society to help me with an experiment although he was against it." she answers.
Yoshi Masaso |
"Why are you being against pathfinder society help?" asks Yoshi.
"Surely help is always being helpful." he struggles a bit with his Taldan words.
"These letters may also be helpful." he adds.
diplomacy aid: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10
GM Baerlie |
"There's death and cruelty wherever they come across." Mieren says and looks at your dogs. "Are you members of the Embeth Travelers?" he asks, still impolite.
Ogden takes the letters and has a look at it. After reading a few lines she nods, hands them to Mayor Mieren and says "Thank you. Not unexpected news, but I will leave the details of the guard arrangement with Mieren. Right now, I must focus all my attention on my experiment. "
Yoshi Masaso |
"What is being the nature of your experiment?" asks Yoshi.
He looks around the odd town.
"What is being happening here? We are not Travellers, but traveled with them!"
The Tien man looks pretty pleased with himself for having almost managed a joke.
GM Baerlie |
Aurelia Ogden sees Archibald's customized wayfinder and her eyes brighten. "Ah, you are the Pathfinders I asked for! Excellent to see that my message was received and heard by the Society! I’m Mayor Aurelia Ogden, and this is my compatriot, Mayor Knavar Mieren. Your role in the experiment is very straightforward. I will need several people to observe the westward-facing clock, and record everything you see or hear — taste, smell, touch as well if it becomes necessary. As members of the Pathfinder Society, your experience with ... unusual situations is legendary, and this alignment will certainly qualify as ‘unusual’—one for your Pathfinder Journals, I hope!" she says.
Mieren frowns and says "Well, I'm done here. Good luck.". He stomps away.
Mayor Ogden continues "As you might know, when this part of town becomes 'unstuck', as it is referred to in the local vernacular, we lose all sense of how much time has passed. I am hoping that the timepieces I have constructed will allow us to keep track of time while we remain out of phase with the rest of Uringen. While I’m observing my timepieces, I will not be able to pay attention to other events in the tower. That is where you come in. I’d say we meet at 11:45, you should enough time to get yourselves set up and prepared for the event itself, but you may have better insights as to how much time you need to investigate beforehand. Be careful when using the clock tower to tell time; the northern clock face is the accurate one. It's now about 6:30." in the evening
Mayor Ogden mentions that you can relax up at the Oaken Knot Tavern before the night’s events if they wish. She's going to pay the bill.
Shagratt II |
Yes I haven't much experience in these things. Doesn't seem something up my alley so to speak. Give me a bunch of goblins in the woods any day. Just like in Isger."
