Engaging Cadence & Boo Bot Protocol
Cadence Will (DC 13): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 Add +3 if effect is mind-affecting.
"You don't scare us!" Cadence declares as debris rains down and the earth quakes. Not having holy water or a haunt siphon on hand she instead begins scanning the area for anything that the restless spirits might be strongly anchored to.
Cadence casts Detect Psychic Significance.
"That's right! We'll put things right again so you can rest," Boo agrees as she anxiously watches for any physical threats to manifest.
Boo will delay until something else happens.
GM Red |
J, Will save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
J stands up as Gitano heals her wounds. "Thank you. Quickly, I'll get us out of here!" She says, her voice quivering as she vaguely remembers this exact scene from years ago. She picks up some pieces of debris and tosses them aside, yet just as quickly as she moves them out of the way, more chunks of concrete and stone instantly materialize, blocking any path out of the classroom.
All of the broken down desks spark in Cadence's psychic vision, once owned by the student specters who you just witnessed frantically running out of the classroom.
There's no more damage from falling debris, and everyone is up again!
Gitano Frallino |
Gitano shaken, round 2 of 10.
What's happening? Gitano looks around for signs of a lingering threat. Perception: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 5 - 2 = 19
"Does anyone else require healing? I can help, if needed."
"It seems whatever restless spirits haunt this place seek to injure you, J, as well as us and do not want us to leave. J, what happened here, exactly? Can you try to commune with it?"
Gitano stows the spent haunt siphon and retrieves a vial of holy water.

Engaging Cadence & Boo Bot Protocol
Despite Cadence's bravado she pales as her psychic senses pick up a strong aura emanating from the broken desks. "The desks...they belonged to the students...maybe there's something we can do with them to put an end to this haunting," she gasps, the strain of her vision taking a toll on her already physically damaged body.
Still, she attempts to make her way over to the broken and damaged desks to take a closer look at them.
Perception (Desks): 1d20 ⇒ 8
Meanwhile, Boo hovers close to her sister - ready to protect her from harm.
______
Based on Cadence's current profile she was at 9/10 HP before the haunt triggered so now she's at 2/10 - eep!
Corona Merrion |
"The desks, New Friend Cadence? I don't know how digging around in them will help but you sound like you know what you're talking about," Corona responds - holy water still clutched in one hand.
"Oh! But you're hurt...don't worry, I'll fix it now that my legs are working again," she adds and with a flick of her wrist, a small wand drops into her hand. She hurries over to Cadence and gives her a light tap on the shoulder with her wand.
Cure Light Wounds (Cadence): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
______
Corona retrieves her wand from her spring-loaded wrist sheath, then steps over to Cadence and uses it. Wand charges remaining (40) and Cadence should now be at full health again - yay!
Tanna Myrwen |
Round 1:
Free Action: Tanna shakes her head, "I don't see anything. Where is it?"
Move Action: Unsure as to what she should do, Tanna pulls out her Healer's Kit.
Standard Action: Tanna attempts to heal herself.
Heal: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 I think Tanna needs a 15 to heal using a kit? And does a kit give any bonuses to the roll?
Gitano Frallino |
Gitano cautiously approaches the elf, wand in hand.
"The offer of healing was sincere. If you'll allow me?"

As Mort and Tanna contemplate what to do, Bukkah whips open the second haunt siphon, which sucks in a haze of grey and black energy from all corners of the room. When the soul vacuum finally stops, the vial glows bright green, and the room somehow seems lighter.
Your haunt siphon has now become a spiritual grenade of sorts, and can be thrown as a 1d6 negative energy splash weapon.
The debris barricading the classroom's exit vanishes with the desks and spectres, leaving an empty room with barely a ceiling left.
Out of combat
Tanna, a Healer's Kit gives +2 to your heal checks.
Bukkah |
"Bukkah am good with haunt siphon! Think got it in here somehow," he calls out as he pats the top of the device with one of his claws. He slings the device over his shoulder and nods, ready to resume their exploration.
Mort Gloomhollow |
Seeing things go back to normal Mort relaxes a bit and puts the cork back into his holy water vial and restows it away for later. He does pull out a healing wand of his own, handing it to Gitano to fix his bruised back and shoulders.
Wand CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Wand CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
"Thanks. Hopefully the next thing we face we can actually face..."
He sticks the wand back in his belt and takes a look around the room with J to see why she wanted to come back here in the first place. Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Corona Merrion |
"Oh, well that works too," Corona says with bemusement as Bukkah's haunt siphon puts an end to the ghostly activity. "And it's a lot easier than trying to root through a room while the ghosties are trying to hurt you!"
She carefully stows her holy water back into her pack, but keeps her healing wand out as she repairs her own injuries.
Cure Light Wounds (Self): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Cure Light Wounds (Self): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
"Much better," she sighs as she returns her wand to its wrist-sheath. "Okay! New Friend J, any idea what we should do next?" she asks as she looks around the empty classroom.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
GM Red |
"Thank you for your assistance and healing... I should be more careful," J says, but her voice grows distant, as if she's listening for a barely audible whisper. After a moment's pause, she continues. "Another restless force calls to me from below," she says, looking towards a hallway leading down.
Grishan nods in agreement. "There's something there. Something... Vengeful. I don't think you've got any more of those siphons left. Let's hope I'm wrong, and it's actually friendly, like me?" The phantom says with a smirk.
Corona Merrion |
"Down? Did we see any way to go down, New Friends?"
Corona begins helping to look for a way down. "Maybe there'll be a big hole or something that we can climb down! I brought my rope just in case."
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Mort Gloomhollow |
Mort nods to J, in complete agreement of her slighty 'reckless' behavior, as he brushes himself off and checks to see his bumps and bruises are completely healed. He frowns a bit seeing some more new scrapes and scratches on his almost new breastplate. Heh, back when I was her age I was in far more trouble than she'll ever be. Imagine the stupid things you could get into with some gold coins in your pocket, wonder if that little vixen of a mother bought her out of trouble yet?
"Ya lets find the way J's talkin' about and keep this wagon rolling along."
Gitano Frallino |
Gitano steps out of the classroom and into the warm sunshine. He takes a knee and waits for the shakes to pass.
"Let's see if we can help J find the way below."
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Sheesh...

GM Red |
"Sorry, I'm still a little shaken," J says. "I meant the entrance to the necropolis. It's right there," she says, pointing to the structure in the center. Past the door to the necropolis is indeed a narrow stone hallway, where a trio of corpses slowly rots into the stone.
Grishan examines them, but doesn't get too close. "Awful. Why are people still dying here?"
three suits of leather armor, three short swords, three oils of magic weapon, two potions of cure light wounds, a scroll of remove disease, a two magic wands, a collection of excavation tools and sundry items, and 105 gp.
All of the magical items are marked with a small Glyph of the Open Road.
"It's further in. I'm sure of it. I know you might think I'm crazy by this point, but I can really sense something in the air," J says.
The hallway terminates at a doorway which seems to open to a larger room, but you can't quite make out what's inside just yet from where you stand.
Boo? |
Boo leans down to examine the bodies.
Heal: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
"Cadence, I don't know what killed them. Should I go incorporeal? Maybe see what's ahead?" The spirit cocks her head. "Speaking of healing, don't you think you should use your wand?"
Bukkah |
Heal 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
"Bukkah am not know either. Probably something bad and evil down here," he mutters. He casts Detect Magic in the corpses, wondering if the unlucky deceased had any useful items to aid this group.
Cadence Anakevo |
Heal: 10 + 6 = 16
Cadence kneels down beside her sister, her red hair falling in her face as she expertly examines the bodies. "These people died two months ago, but they show no signs of physical injury. What the heck killed them?"
She casts Detect Psychic Significance, hoping to find a clue.
"Boo, I think it's time for you to become secret agent ghost!" Cadence concentrates, helping Boo transition to her incorporeal state.
This will take a full minute.
Then she takes her own wand out.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
She turns to the others. "Are you okay with Boo scouting ahead and taking a peek?"
Gitano Frallino |
Gitano crouches down next to Cadence, and takes a look at the bodies.
Heal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
"You're right, Cadence, two of them show no signs of injury. Though I'm curious about the wounds on the third?"
Anything to indicate how the third person met his or her end?
Gitano points out the Glyph of the Open Road markings on the equipment carried by the corpses.
He gathers their belongings into a pile. "Either they were Pathinders, or they broke into the Dreng's shed and helped themselves to Society supplies. We can have the Lodge try to identify their remains, but they won't be needing these."
"I'll take one of these oils of magic weapon, unless someone objects. Might be useful, if things get a bit undeadly."
"Let's see if I can identify these wands." Gitano casts detect magic and looks them over.
Spellcraft on Wand 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Spellcraft on Wand 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
"Okay, Boo, take a peek, but it only helps if you survive to tell us what you've seen, so be cautious. 'Scouts, out!'"
Corona Merrion |
"Aw, that's nice of New Friend Boo to offer to scout for us! Thank you Boo," Corona responds as she looks at the pile of gear retrieved off the bodies.
"Friend Mort should take an oil too, maybe a healing potion also," she suggests. "I can carry these tools, just in case the tunnel collapses and we have to dig ourselves out!"
GM Red |
In your psychic vision, you catch a glimpse of horrified faces and hear screams of terror. You can make out a group of ectoplasmic kids surrounding two of the slain men, creepily chanting Drown in this yard like the rest of us in unison before your vision ends.
The third corpse looks to have met his unfortunate end from a wound in his chest, though the way the short sword is placed would have you believe he had been fleeing with it in his hand and fell on it.
Gitano determines that one wand is a wand of lesser restoration (6 charges), and the other is a wand of protection from evil (18 charges).
Boo turns invisible and wanders into the room ahead...
... And finds that it is completely empty.
Gitano Frallino |
Gitano holds up the two wands, "One is a wand of lesser restoration with 6 charges, and the other is a wand of protection from evil with 18 charges. These could be very helpful, if any of you can use them."
He offers them to the other casters. "I suggest we use the wand of protection from evil before we proceed. Its effects should last about a minute or so."
UMD gets a rank or three next level. Neither spell on the bard list.
Mort Gloomhollow |
Busy weekend!
Mort heads along with the group, staying in arms reach of J. He takes the potion and oil from Corona and smiles in thanks. "Smear this oil on Mindy if she ain't cutting it, gotcha."
He continues on with the group, slightly distracted by a far away place.

"Ooh, me, pick me!" Corona bounces as Bukkah offers to use the protection wand. "Better safe than sorry where ghosties are concerned, right New Friends?"
After being bestowed some magical protection, Corona seems to consider something for a moment. Then she reaches down and picks up the last vial of oil. "Um, does anyone else here really fight much with weapons? Seems like New Friends Bukkah and Cadence use magic and New Friends Boo and Grishan use, uh...ghostie powers or something! I'll take this for my longspear unless New Friend J wants it."

Cadence opens her mind to the psychic emanations within the room, prodding gently for the history of it. Her mind opens up...
A man's face, eyes wide with terror, his mouth opening in a scream.
Two bodies fall to the ground.
A group of ectoplasmic children hold hands in a circle, chanting:
'Drown in the yard
Drown in the yard
Drown in the yard
Like the REST OF US!'
Hands shaking, mouth dry she turns to Gitano. "I think I know what may have killed them. When I just cast my spell, I had a glimpse of horrified faces and heard screams of terror. A group of ectoplasmic kids surrounded two of the slain men, creepily chanting something about drowning in the yard, their voices speaking in an eerie unison." Cadence shakes herself. "Please give me one of those wand charges. We need to be very careful here."

Corona Merrion |
"Ohh...I think all of us should make use of the wand then," Corona advises. "I don't want to drown, in the water or on dry land and I don't want any of you to either."
GM Red |
J looks as shaken as Cadence, but her intrigue has her no less willing to explore the room beyond. "Come on. We've come this far, and Boo did say it was clear."
I assume you all used that PfE wand or other buffs as needed before you continued on.
You continue down the hallway, where you also come to find that the room ahead is empty. Except, as J approaches, the spirit of a young girl with blonde hair materializes, seated in the center of the room. She stands up and turns to face J.
"I've been waiting for you a long time, Junia. Waiting for you to come back. Why did you leave me? Won't you come back to me? Then we can all be friends again."
J's irises turn as black as her pupils and she freezes in place. "Cassiel, Cassiel, I'm so sorry, please forgive me," she mutters.
"This is the spirit of our friend, Cassiel Marlinchen. She perished along with I in the necropolis," Grishan whispers to you.

As a swift action, Gitano calls upon his Archaeologist's Luck +1 to attack, damage, saves and skills.
"Cassiel, we mean you no harm. My name is Gitano Frallino, and these people are my friends. Some have called me 'the Luckiest Man Alive.' I believed them, too. Until I met Junia."
"For reasons known only to Fate, a ring J wore when the earthquake destroyed your school was actually a magical ring of sustenance, and it kept her alive long after the other children perished. J had no idea why she survived. A team of Pathfinders later found her, and they discovered the nature of the ring."
"J actually did try to return to the Tri-Towers Yard many times, but her mother feared for her, and she prevented J from finding you."
"Cassiel, your own father, Deris, spent over a decade trying to find you in the rubble. He is heartbroken and misses you terribly. We would carry to him any message you wish to convey."
"Cassiel, Junia is still your true friend. Had it been within her power to save you, she surely would have done so. Please, find it in your heart to forgive her."

Having dealt with sewer thugs, tub ninjas, exploding monks, assassination attempts and more, Corona had thought she'd seen a lot. But this...the spirit of this girl was different. Though she'd made no move to harm them, Corona sensed an undercurrent of potential danger in her words.
And for possibly the first time since becoming a Pathfinder, she felt afraid - for herself, her friends, and for J.
"Gitano's right, M-Miss Cassiel...New Friend Junia didn't mean to leave you and the others here," she says quietly. "But we're all here now and we can do just like Gitano said, we can send a message to your family!"

Cassiel's eyes flicker and the corners of her mouth drop as she hears Gitano, Corona, Mort, and Tanna out. She rushes towards J's side and falls to her knees, tears welling up in her eyes. "Why did you get to survive! What about me? It's not fair!" Her eyes turn deep red for a moment as she struggles to suppress her true form.
J cries with her, and Grishan floats towards the duo with squinted eyes. "For years I wondered what happened to you, Cass. I could feel your calling and I knew you were here! I did what I could to find you, but you know how overbearing my mother can be. I'm sorry it took so long," J pleads.
Grishan bows his head and softly speaks. "It is my fault that any of this even happened. I'm sorry. Truly. I'm so sorry."
~*~
A few moments pass with the three locked in a group hug, then Cassiel turns to Gitano. "Tell my father it was his visits to the Yard and his reassuring words that kept me sane for so many years, and I will always love him. It was only when he stopped coming here that I lost control. I have done some regrettable things, as have they," she says as two ectoplasmic kids rise up out of the floor. "We're not good kids. We're not good kids."
Bukkah |
"What you three done that am so bad? Group here to help. Can group help undo the bad things?". Bukkah wasn't exactly sure what they were talking about, but from Cadence's description, it wasn't good. However his mission was to help J and he knew what she would want to do.
Mort Gloomhollow |
Mort does his best to remain straight and stoic at the heartfelt meeting taking place, after a few moments, and Bukkah speaking up, he adds in his two cents. "Are there any memento's we could return to your families to let them know you care? Anything that could help you finally rest in peace perhaps?"
I sure am glad they look friendly so far...
Corona Merrion |
"I think they mean those bodies we f-found," Corona whispers, trying to stifle a sniffle.
"Um, Miss Cassiel? I...I think it can still be okay. We'll do what we can to help and you and the other kids seem really sorry about the things you've done. Um, and I think that since you're sorry the gods will see that," she mumbles, her words awkward but sincere.
