You are in Absalom, the mighty City at the Center of the World, and you’ve always longed to explore one of the countless ruins of failed conquerors that litter the plains outside the city’s walls.

You’ve heard rumors that one of the sealed siege castles has been laid open by a minor earthquake. Word on the street is that no one has yet entered the tower, which folks are calling the “Fallen Fortress.” What better way to start a life of excitement and adventure than by exploring its long-abandoned, dusty halls and perhaps claiming its ancient treasures?

While sitting in an inn you're approached by a old man with a long, gray beard and bald head. He uses a cane to walk and wears a pair of spectacles at the tip of his nose. "Good day, adventurers! May I interest you in a job?"

Alfred takes place at your table and explains the job he'd like you to take. "My name's Alfred Keenens, and I'm a local historian. I seek people who are willing to collect any historical or valuable artifacts that might still be within the ruined tower of the Fallen Fortress. I can offer you up to 250 gp each for your trouble, and of course you may keep whatever else you find. Are you interested?"

It's assumed your characters already know each other, but go ahead and introduce them into the story.

A battered-looking man in cheap wooden armor looks calmly at the historian. I'm Sago Joles, warrior and explorer. I'll gladly accept your job, seeing as the money you offer will be quite useful to me in my impoverished state. Do you know anything about what caused the ruin of the fortress, or what artifacts may remain within?

Locke had been hanging around Absalom just long enough, after his previous jobs, to know the others by name.

You see a Elf woman with long red hair and a distinct leer behind her half-moon glasses as she gazes at the group. There is a obvious air of superiority around her and is dressed in a long flowing noble dress. She appeared unimpressed with the others in she looks at, but looks to the man and gives a low bow.
"Nice to meet you, good sir. I am curious as to what artefacts these may be. Azlanti? Thassilonian? Osarian?" she asks as the prospect of finding these items seems to be most interesting. She appears to have a scorpion in a tiny cage hanging from her waist.

"I have absolutely no idea!" Alfred says with a lot of enthusiasm. "The siege tower itself has no known name and has been there for hundreds, maybe even thousands, of years. No one even knows who its master was, but it was magically sealed when its master left."

"It's only because of an earthquake that the seal has become undone. An earthquake, haha! Nature accomplished in moments what dozens of scholars, sages, and adventurers could not achieve in years! Anyway, the locals now call this tower the Fallen Fortress. Because it's half fallen apart, you see."

The historian looks at each of you as he stands up to leave. "You can find me here tomorrow. Same time as now. I'm eager to learn what you've discovered by then!"

After maybe picking up a few items you leave Absalom, and head for the Cairnlands. The ruined siege castle now being called the Fallen Fortress rises out of the churned earth of the Cairnlands. No doors or windows mar the otherwise smooth expanse of the tower’s walls. The tower is quatrefoil in plan; its eastern wing has largely collapsed, exposing the interior floors to the open air. Only the topmost level seems whole, though its eastern portion hangs precariously over the mountain of rubble left by the collapse. At ground level, the rubble frames a gaping hole in the side of the building that provides access to the tower’s darkened interior.

The tower stands 80 feet tall and its exterior walls are amazingly smooth. Climbing the ragged remains of the east wing’s walls looks to be easier, but won't let you access the highest floor. Moving through the rubble will slow you down (difficult terrain).

There's a map for you below my name, under the link "Fallen Fortress". For those who haven't yet been in any of my games: I expect you to move your own token when your character moves. If you're unable to, ask a fellow party member to help out :)

Jaquilin has no idea from which era the Fallen Fortress came. Like Alfred said it could be hundreds of years old, but it could just as well be thousands of years old.

Ruegann draws a dagger as he moves towards the dogs and throws it into the remaining dog's side.

Heveel doesn't really know what to do and sneaks forward. He identifies the dogs as the kind of dog that usually lives with humans as a pet. Except these dogs look starved, and don't have a collar. Heveel also realizes dogs have a very keen sense of smell, and are unlikely to not notice his position even if he uses stealth.

Combat's over!

When you get closer to the tower:

On closer inspecting of the tower you notice the southern wing is entirely filled with rubble, leaving only the northern wing accessible. The northern wing of the tower seems to have escaped the worst effects of the collapse, but rubble still litters the floor and everything is covered in a thick layer of stone dust. Thick cobwebs cloak the ceiling and hang down the walls like gossamer tapestries. A single archway stands open in the southwest wall. The rubble still makes the entire northern room difficult terrain.

Roll perception when you enter the northern room.
