Sense Motive: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 20 = 37 He realizes the man is not being honest with him, but fails to find what the boast might be. "It makes no sense. We are here to protect the Vault from intruders. You have looted the relics of Hao Jin. You have allied with these other interlopers. You seek to re-attune to keep 'others' out ergo seek to keep the vault for yourself. Therefore you are intruders." It looks at Grimdoc holding the book and at Maximo's fine words. "However you seem to have the right to be here. The centaur creature steps back and waves an arm. "You may proceed."
The double iron doors again open at a touch of the codex. The next room is smaller than the previous one.
Dominating this chamber is a vast statue—twenty-five feet tall, composed of a strange blue-green metal shaped in the likeness of a Tian woman wearing exotic robes. It’s partially shrouded in a churning vortex of multi-colored energy that hisses and crackles with menace. Extending from the statue to the walls, floor, and ceiling is an immense web-like array of shimmering energy tendrils that seem to phase in and out of reality. A white marble altar, studded with dozens of multi-colored glass knobs and metal levers, lies a few feet in front of the statue.

Maximo probably wouldn't have vouched for the two 'interlopers' with the group (particularly since he knows both are evil), and suggested they wait with the centaur guards. Is it too late for that?
"Well, this is a shocking discovery." Maximo says, though he has little more to offer in unraveling the mystery of it. Turning to Pai, he asks, "Have you any arcane protection should this elemental decide we are lightning rods?"
To Grimdoc, "The codex has proved the key to previous challenges. Should we assume it is relevant here as well?"

Scroll of Communal Protection from Energy. As its a 4th level spell, that means it takes a seventh level faster to prepare it. For ten minutes we have protection from electricity equal to 12 times spell caster level, if my math is correct.

"It appears to be doing something with this statue. Perhaps generating power in some way? I knew a gnome once who attempted to recharge a magical staff by standing on his roof. Pharasma bless his soul." He makes a common sign to bless the departed.

The first step, as you recall, is to disconnect the power source. You also know the ritual will take 20-30 minutes from everyone and to add the special ingredients during it.
No you will not recall, but your characters all do. :) The two you found are OK waiting with the inevetables though they will be watching from this room. The diplomacy check was high enough it doesn't matter to the guards. I'll move Pai on the map as she can't always get google docs. She will be last in though (per her request), so I need to know where everyone else is going. Pai, are you including the two allies in the spell? if not two of you get the resistance for 20 minutes (or one for 30 minutes), just let me know who. Also if you wait to cast it, everyone has to be adjacent to you so they can benefit from the spell ('creatures touched')

DM, shouldn't we have 70 minutes of the spell to divvy up? Communal Protection from Energy takes a 7th level caster to prepare the scroll. The Protection from Energy spell says we received 10 minutes of protection per level.

As Brother Grimdoc nears the alter a bolt of white-hot energy surges from the glass knobs and copper levers. A second bolt discharges into the weblike structure above. It is hard to see what effect this has on the tangled energy, but a fearsome, spidershaped storm cloud, with long sweeping limbs charged with electricity detaches itself and strikes at the dwarf!

He is saved from serious burns by Pai's spell. 12 damage -20 = no damage Small foxes* made of force energy jump from Lillian's fingers and yip their way across the room. They bite at the elemental's vaporous form. The lightning spider raises up then swings a leg made mostly of electricity at the dwarf. Even before the appendage connects small blue arcs form on the dwarf's plate mail and jump up to meet the attack. Another limb strikes out at Harris, and blue sparks leap from his chainmail.

Grimdoc rushes in as Haris tumbles out. Haris misses a step and the creature swings at the acrobat. Pai hits the creature with a spinning vortex of force energy as Maximo & the Rysalius bolster their fighting efforts.
Pai casts another spell and gold dust starts catching bits of lights the lights arc the bits of lightning centering on the spider-creature's face. Despite the distraction the creature lets loose a roar that sound like a gale. It swings twice at Grimdoc then shifts toward the door.

Is the elemental still flying 10' up?
It is. Maximo & Rysalius may need to reconsider. I am ok with you being under it and jumping up, but that will take a move action.) Keep in mind also that as a huge creature it has a reach of 15 ft.
EDIT: to reward creative thinking (giving the statue energy resistance) I am going to allow Maximo's blow to connect... :).Grimdoc's size and reach allow him to deliver a devastating blow. The creatures cloudy forms seems to absorb some of the damage, but much more gets through. The long hammer seems to pull the gaseous form with it as the dwarf finishes the carry through. A long tendril of cloud and sparks strikes down.
Maximo, belaying his age, jumps onto the statue's base he had been contemplating a moment before. He slices with a sword glowing in flames. The tendril slashes back with a charge of electricity.
Two bolts of barely visible energy and two glints of mithril disappear into the storm. A a moment later Haris' daggers fall under the cloud, but Pai's wand continues to hurt it.

Grimdoc reverts back to normal size and pulls out a wand to heal up some of the bruises he sustained during the elemental fight.
