A young, dashing Chelaxian walks into the briefing room, a bright smile on his well-tended, cleanly-shaven face. His clothes are rather simple, those of an explorer save a finely-wrought mithral chain shirt whose color match his eyes. Straight dark hair come down on his shoulders, with a whiff of lavender and icebloom. Seeing that he's the first one to arrive, the Chelish man settles in a comfortable armchair and picks a random Pathfinder chronicle to read while he waits for the Venture-Captain and his companions.

A human, armed with scimitar and shield and wearing a simple but well cared for agile breastplate enters the room. Recognizing another Chelaxian, Darvik nods to the man sitting in the armchair. No sign of the VC yet, eh? Typical.

Reesa, the beautiful aasimar, breezes into the room. She smiles sweetly at the two gentlemen sitting before her. "Hello, you two. I'm Reesa, it's so nice to be assigned with such strapping young gentlemen. Sometimes these assignments get so monotonous, so it'll be nice to have friendly faces to commiserate with.".

She didn't wear armor, only had a small dagger at her side. It was clear that her expertise didn't involve fighting anyone.

A short Andoran man walks in and takes stock of those in the room. He nods curtly. "Morning, everyone. Good to meet you." The Chelaxians in the room aren't quite sure of his sincerity, but he doesn't shy away from them. From his mannerisms and his haircut, you guess he might be former military. While he carries a quiver or arrows at his belt, you don't see a bow.

"I'm Kargen Hapspring." He folds his arms across his chest and you see the hint of an arrow shaped tattoo on his forearm.

Called to Skyreach at the Grand Lodge in Absalom in the early hours of the morning, you sit before Venture-Captain Shevala Iorae, a tall, dark-haired Varisian sorceress known for helping to found the Pathfinder Lodge in Magnimar. She paces her small, scroll-packed office and recounts a story.

“More than a decade ago, a falchion known as Passion’s Edge cut down warrior after warrior, changing hands whenever its owner was bested. A Pathfinder Chronicle from several years ago recently came to my attention with details of the sword and I became more and more curious about it. Last told, a harpy named Tylaca wielded Passion’s Edge and swore an oath to a coven of green hags in the River Kingdoms, declaring herself their champion and swearing to protect them.
One of the hags, it is said, enjoyed the company of the harpy but the other two hated her presence in their coven. In secret, they plotted to rid the coven of her. Their taunts and tricks did not drive her away, but instead, beguiled by jealousy and incited to rage, Tylaca struck down one of the hags and triggered the sword’s powerful curse. The harpy fell into a deep coma and was only rescued from death at the hands of the other hags by her loyal harpy minions. The remaining hags then shattered the sword into three pieces, tossing the hilt in the river and taking one piece with them as they separated, their coven forever broken.
This account comes from a Pathfinder in Daggermark who found the first fragment in the protection of one of the hag sisters, whom he slew to acquire it. He then tracked Aelzeldra, the other hag holding the last fragment, to the Wilewood in the River Kingdoms, but was unable to confront her and take the final fragment before being called away for other duties in Varisia. Go to the hag in the Wilewood and get her fragment. Hags are tricky, though, so be careful—she will likely disguise herself as a young beautiful maiden or a swarthy, handsome man, anything to trick you. Pretend to be fooled by her disguise and try to get her to tell you where the other fragment is—she likely knows more about the history of the sword and I’d prefer if you didn’t kill her.”

She pauses and hands you her fragment of the broken sword.

“Bring this fragment and the hag’s fragment together to Sevenarches. The hilt, retrieved from the Sellen River, rests in Sevenarches with another Pathfinder, a sword sage named Parke Rangston. I’ve asked him to study the fragments, and he will provide lodging for all of you. Give Rangston a day to examine the pieces and then return to Absalom with them. But beware: the fragments likely still hold an old curse, and whoever holds them may be weakened. You leave this afternoon—any questions?”

So how, exactly, are we to identify this hag positively? You have some magical means of doing so? I'd prefer not to have to harass every beautiful maiden I encountered in order to be sure. Darvik then gives a quick smirk. I'll leave the investigation of the handsome gentlemen to somebody else.

Kargen steps forward to take the shard of the sword and examine it. He looks back up at Shevala. "You keep mentioning a curse. Do we know anything more about what this curse does?"

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Knowledge, Local about the Wilewood: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

The Venture-Captian rolls her eyes at Darvik's comment, but answers him none the less.

"The agent who had tracked down and killed the first hag, had already located Aelzeldra before being called away to Varisia. He left detailed notes and maps, and since she apparently lives in the middle of nowhere, there shouldn't be much question about her identity. Apart from the shape shifting of course, but i trust you can handle yourselves when it comes to seeing through disguises."

Turning to Kargen, she continues.

“The fragment saps you of your normal faculties, making you less able to function. In even the brief time I handled one of the fragments, I felt a steady weakening of my strength and my will. Rangston in Sevenarches has reported the same.”

Mechanically speaking, the fragment gives whoever carries it a –1 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks.

Kargen doesn't know much about the Wilewood.

Arriving late to the briefing, the door opens to admit a large hulking Angel kin in simple white trousers and an open white robe over a Mithril breastplate bearing the silver shining Ankh of the Crusade. His skin is the colour of darkened steel, which reflects the light to give the impression that it is in fact made of the metal, a tattoo on his right arm in the form of a foaming tankard shows his allegience to the drunken hero god.

A recent nasty scar runs around his midriff, the edges just visible under the armour.

"Greetings" his voice a deep rumble, "My name is Tomas, Warpriest of Cayden Cailean, I have heard that we seek a cursed Falchion blade, I shall catch up on the journey there. Does anyone know of the Hag's capabilities? Are they spellcasters?"

Auric remains silent during the whole briefing, absorbing the facts given by Venture-Captain Iorae.

A cursed blade? Hags? Certainty of death? Count me in!

"No questions, Capt'n. I'm ready to leave." concludes Auric, apparently very excited about it all.

Any knowledge checks we could roll?

Male Human Inquisitor of Erastil 9 [hp 69/69; F+11, R+12, W+11 (+2 vs. charms); AC 22/15/17; Init +7, Perception +14, Sense Motive +16]

Knowledge, Local about the wilewood might help. Maybe for Rangeston or Sevenarches too. I bet Sarnoc got something for Hags.

Knowledge, Local for Rangeston: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Knowledge, Local for Sevenarches: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

"Do you know anything about the Wilewood that she lives in? Any particular dangers there?"

Sarnoc examines the shard, but apart from discerning that it is indeed a part of a powerful magic item, there's not much he can learn in the falchion's current, fractured state.

Hags, on the other hand, he knows quite a bit about.
Green Hag's claw attacks can deal strength damage. The can also mimic the sounds of any animal living near it's lair. Finally, they have a wide variety of spell like abilities, both constant and at will, the most relevant one being Alter Self at will.

Kargen has heard a bit about Parke Rangston. He is an accomplished swordsman who often sparred with Marcos Farabellus, while he was stationed in Absalom. He has also quite an expert on the history of weapons in general, but swords in particular.

Kargen also knows that Sevenarches is a town in the southwestern River Kingdoms built around seven stone arches scattered around the settlement. It is an ancient site sacred to elves, but has not been in elven hands since they left Golarion for the safety of Sovyrian millennia ago. Since then, Sevenarches has been under the rule of the Oakstewards. Indeed, Sevenarches is the only surviving kingdom from the initial wave of Kellid migration into the River Kingdoms region after the exit of the elves

Since this an older scenario, there are no listed knowledge checks, but if you want to know more and have a relevant skill, go ahead and roll it.

The Venture-Captain nods approvingly at Kargen's questions.

"As far as I have been informed, the hag Aelzeldra lives a secluded life, far from anything exciting. I don't think you'll have to face anything difficult. Apart from the hag herself of course."

Auric recalls reading in a rather interesting book, that Wilewood is the largest forest in the River Kingdom of Sevenarches. It is inhabited by numerous dangerous fey, treants, centaurs and other forest denizens. The fey think of themselves as a sovereign nation within Sevenarches, and are unfriendly to all outsiders. They do not consider themselves strictly aligned with the Oakstewards, but recognize the druids as friends of the Wilewood, working with them despite their chaotic nature. Many animals living in the wood are permanently awakened by fey magic.

Tomas shrugs his heavy metallic shoulders as everyone finishes their speculations and questions, it would appear that the mission was very straightforward, a welcoming thought after the usual subterfuge he was asked to partake in.

"Go to the lair, despatch the Hag and take the sword fragment to Sevenacres, that sounds straightforward. The River kingdoms are known for banditry yes? Best be careful."

He rolls his eyes at Darvik, it would seem that the two of them would struggle to get along.

@Sarnoc: Fine by me. And the potions sound like a good idea as well.

"I have booked your passage on a ship to Cassomir, where you will be met by a halfling named Jolson. He is a river barge captain, and has been given instructions to take you to the Wilewood, and then further on to the town of Sevenarches."

If you have more questions, I'll let you ask them retroactively.

You sail to Cassomir, and meet up with Jolson on the docks. The rather quite halfling guides you to his barge.

"Nothing luxurious, but it does the job.", he remarks, and unless you wish to dally in Taldor, you begin your journey up river. The trip is uneventful, with Jolson pulling into port towns and fishing villages along the way, and after a week, he stops the barge seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

"According to the map the Venture-Lady sent me, you're supposed to go in there."

You disembark and head down a forest trail. Amid a tightly clustered forest, thick with dense shrubs, tangled trees, and thorny vines, sits a clearing spanning little more than 40 feet at its widest point. Clustered between trees on the western edge of the clearing sits a tiny hut nearly consumed by vines and patches of feathery moss. A gnarled weeping willow droops over the ramshackle shelter obscuring the structure like a curtain. On the southern end of the clearing, a small shrine composed of river rocks and topped with a spherical stone carved to look like a bloodshot eye glares at anyone entering the area. The surrounding forest is an impassable wall of vegetation save the footpath leading north back to the river.

Throughout the boat journey to Cassomir, Tomas laments about his time spent there, a poor tale into the locker and the remembering of friends who sadly lost their lives to a ghoul. Perking up once they were on the river barge and away from the town.

Tomas presses forwards with the rest of his group at the woman's plea for aid, his heroic nature urging him to dive forward, the Warpriest halts himself a moment upon thinking on the Venture Captain's warnings regarding the Hags capabilities and penchant for taking on the form of wounded damsels.

Focusing on his training to wrestle out falsehoods spoken, Tomas asks his question levelly, his usually gung ho nature warring with the need for caution. Bloody Remorahz has shaken my confidence, this cannot stand. He thinks bitterly.

"Where is the Hag now? What is your name maiden?"

A relieved smile spreads over her face when Tomas approaches her.

"My name is Shella. The hag left this morning. I don't know where she is."

She seems to speak the truth.

Sarnoc moves to the edge of the clearing with the others.

Should I end her ruse and cast Dispel Magic on her disguise? No probably safer to let her think she is fooling us, I don't think any of us is fooled by her act. In fact, I'll play along and see were it goes.

A maiden in peril, quickly free her, men! Sarnoc says in a hushed, but excited tone.

Darvik still does not trust the woman after being warned about hags in the briefing. He'll examine the ground near the hut. Maybe I'll just take a better look around while you guys deal with the girl.

Survival to track, to see how many creatures have actually been here recently: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Darvik will then go inside the hut and see what might be inside.

Elain moves up to help the woman putting his bow away and examines the metal pole and chain to see if there is aneasy way of freeing her. "Dont worry miss we will soon have you out of here" He tries to smile reassuringly at the woman and then attempts to lift or remove the metal pole from the ground

Darvik finds the tracks of several different animals, a set of medium sized, clawed, humanoid tracks and a set of barefoot, medium, humanoid tracks. Shella is not wearing any footwear.

The hut's interior is quite unassuming, as the space is mostly taken up by what looks like a simple bed of moss and furs.

Elain yanks the chain free, and Shella gets to her feet.

"Thank you so much!"

She gives the sylph a hesitant look before continuing.

"It's not that I'm ungrateful to be saved, believe me, but a girl can't but wonder what a group of strapping young adventurers is doing out here, in the middle of nowhere."

"I'm unharmed, but the hag has been keeping me here for months. I dread to think what she has in store for me!"

Kargen's gut tells him that she is lying though.
