Silverhex:

As you may have gathered from my absence, I’ve made a few enemies who would be all too pleased to see me leave the region—or worse. Like so many matters in the River Kingdoms, the range of thugs that might want an honest explorer dead are as diverse and numerous as the kingdoms
themselves. The last several months of my time here have been exciting and perilous enough that exactly who my real enemies are is unclear. Until I can sort out the sides, I’m lying low in a nearby hideout. I should be safe there and can meet with you soon to complete our transaction.

Year of the Skykey

Danicka:
You don't notice anything peculiar about the man, and other than a penchant for shiny things (his fingers have several jewelled rings on them,) he seems normal. He does strike you as quite slimy though, not the sort of guy you would normally want to spend time with. The crowd, however, seem to adore him.

You have no idea how much the rod is worth, but it is obviously worth quite a bit. The rod is too far away to really identify anything arcane about it, but the arcane words seem to indicate some sort of compulsion spell.

Sinaryn proves too quick and agile for the crowd, and by the time the first hand grabs her shoulder, she has already spotted a slight gap through which she can escape. She deftly weaves through the crowds, almost fluid-like as she flows against the traffic.

Brock's tries rather more forceful approach, shouting and pushing. It seems to be just as effective though, and a lot of the villager who attempt to grab him soon decide to go for less intimidating targets. This proves to be unfortunate for Danicka, however, as more and more people start grabbing at her, ignoring her comparatively timid pleas to leave her alone.

Yaiho sees that Danicka is in trouble and tries roaring and pushing against the villagers to try and get to her. However, there are just too many people between them, and Yaiho maybe holds back slightly too much, fearing that he may accidentally brake someone.

Lets finish off the first two rounds of crowd escaping action, then we'll have the grand finale. :)

Forrest is suddenly enraged when the crowd comes surging at them. Their mind a have been enslaved! Such oppression cannot be tolerated. He, quite dramatically, rips open the collar of his shirt. Round 1
As small and slight figure, few things can be as fearful as being mobbed by a large group, especially when the humans tower over him. Master Qi Zhong, I seek your protection. He concentrates briefly, calling upon his race's innate connection to the shadow plane, and suddenly, in his place is no more than a fleeting patch of shadow.

Standard: Activate racial ability Dissolution’s Child to turn invisible for one round. Move: move as fast as he can out of the mob before he appears again.

Dissolution’s Child:
Once per day, you may change your appearance to look as if you were little more than a 4-foot-tall area of shadow. Your physical form still exists and you are not incorporeal—only your appearance changes. This works like invisibility, except it only lasts 1 round per level (maximum 5 rounds). This is a supernatural ability.

Round 2: assuming he could move out of the mob with 20ft movement
Although he has freed himself, some of his friends are still trapped. Deciding that some distraction is needed, he looks for any empty shed nearby. He whips out a bomb and tosses with all his might at its roof, hoping that the fiery explosion will set it ablaze!
bomb vs empty shed: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 (I assume that's a hit.) :)

When the villagers turn to look, he points to the burning roof and calls out in his loudest voice possible (which is slightly louder than a whisper), "I saw Folloch! He threw something onto the roof! He's trying to cover his escape!"

Year of the Skykey

Danicka manages to slip free of a few of the grasping hands, but being right in the middle of the crowd as she is, yet more villagers start grabbing for her as she throws out a hand towards Yaiho for help.

As much as I like dramatic unveiling of Forrest's slaver's brand, I'm not allowed to give you a high enough bonus to make that intimidate a success. ;)

Forrest declaration of Razmir's false godhood does not go down well with the villagers, and he finds himself the focus of more than his fair of grabbing hands, "Razmir brings the joy of obedience! Join us..." They say in creepy unison as they attempt to restrain Forrest, but being small and agile has its advantages and he soon manages to run towards the edge of the crowd, weaving through the bodies with remarkable ease.

Umbrutani vanishes before the eyes of several surprised villagers, and reappears again near the outskirts of the crowd, behind the backs of many of the villagers. Attempting to distract them away his friends, Umbru sets a nearby stall alight. However, the villagers seem fairly happy that Folloch is covering his escape so well, and most of those near Umbru move to block his path in the direction of the stall. Fortunately for Umbru, Folloch ran the other direction and there are only a few villagers left for him to escape from.

Recap...

Danicka is still mostly in the middle of the crowd slowly moving towards Yaiho with an outstretched hand, but she is being held back by a number of villagers. Yaiho is also surrounded by villagers, held back as he attempts to push his way towards Danicka. Sinaryn is nearly clear of the crowd, spotting gaps and weaving through with great agility. She can see Folloch and his guards heading towards what look to be the stables, but he is getting worryingly far away. Brock is similarly close to the edge of the crowd, with most villagers deciding against grabbing him for fear of their lives. Forrest has made it half way through, dodging and weaving with surprising speed for one with such short legs. And finally, Umbru has made it through most of the crowd thanks to his invisibility, but finds himself the focus of several villagers again as he draws attention to himself.

This is the final push, I need 1 more skill check from everybody, but Brock must use something other than intimidate. Things are touch and go as to if you are going to make it, so everybody needs to make this round count. However, all you need is a certain number of successes, so don't worry too much about positioning too much other than for flavour. ;)

I'll wait until everyone has posted and resolve in one big post. :)

Forrest practically growls as the hands of the crowd begin to grab him as the disciples close in. With desperate eyes he looks around. Seeing a horse tied up to the stage, he gets a devious glint in his eye.
In a maneuver which may have broken a normal man's bones, he slips from the grasp of his would-be captors and dives underneath the horse's legs. Barely missing being trampled by a stray hoof, he makes it to the other side and out of the crowd.

Year of the Skykey

As Brock makes it out of the crowd, he concocts a cunning ruse and announces the arrival of Razmir. Those closest to Brock actually turn and drop to their knees before they realise that nobody is there, and a hushed murmuring spreads through the rest of the crowd, "He's here? Razmir's here! Where?" Umbru uses the distraction to slip, unnoticed, past the few remaining villagers around him and joins up with Sinaryn who has just about weaved past the last of the villagers herself.

With half of the group already out of the crowd, Forrest find himself in a difficult situation, surrounded on all sides by several rows of persistent villagers. The manoeuvre he performed to escape them would sung by bards for decades to come, if only one had been present to witness it. Once safely on the other side of the horse, it rears, preventing any villagers from quick pursuit for fear of being trampled.

Yaiho has had enough, and villagers start to go flying as he pushes his way towards Danicka, not one of them the match for his strength. As he approaches, the people around Danicka have little trouble believing her words of warning and they start to back off slightly. Once the two are reunited, Yaiho picks his friend up and barrels through any villager fool enough to ignore Danicka's warnings, carrying her to safety.

With everybody free from the clutches of the crowd, the group quickly chase after Folloch, who they can just about see entering the stables. The crowd does follow, but they are disorderly and make very slow progress in comparison to the sprinting Pathfinders.

That's the way to do it! You needed 12 successes to escape the crowd in time, and you got exactly that. :)

As you approach the stables, you see Folloch and his two guards hastily filling a carriage with chests and luggage. Silver plates and tableware are scattered over the floor near one of the guards, the man had obviously dropped a chest and is currently scooping up what he can. Folloch turns as you approach and levels his jewelled rod at you one last time, but it has about the same effect as before and he quickly yells, "Kill them! They have come to assassinate me!" The guards drop what they are doing, slowly walk towards you, and reach for their swords as they say, in unison, "Folloch is a great man, he has given our lives meaning and shown us the joys of servitude and obedience!"

I wondered if you had remembered that when you charged, Brock. I'm sure you'll be fine this time though, you have quite a bit of backup if things go wrong. ;)

Yaiho heads straight for Folloch, swinging his massive hammer in an attempt to test the priest's divinity. However, Folloch's guard does his job and gives Yaiho a mighty shove, throwing off the big man's aim so that he completely misses Folloch. Forrest quickly approaches the same guard and attempts to take advantage of the distraction. However, his valiant attempt to take out the guard without causing lasting harm makes it just too difficult to land a blow at the moment.

Umbru lobs a bomb that arcs over Yaiho's head and explodes just behind Folloch, the flames licking at the priest's legs and feet, "Aaagh!" Unfortunately, the man has quick reflexes and manages to hop away from the worst of the explosion with only minor burns.

Well, I believe we all learnt a valuable lesson here today; do not sucker punch a half-orc barbarian. :)

Filled with rage, Yaiho strikes back at his attacker. The hammer hits the guard’s chest with incredible force, lifting the man clean off his feet and sending him flying over Forrest’s head, leaving a trail of red mist in his wake. He lands behind Forrest, a crumpled mess of broken bones and ruptured internal organs. Yaiho has just enough time to see the results of his fury before he collapses himself, blood seeping from the wound in his back. You killed him three times with a single blow.

Brock completely ignores his wound and just steps past the guard who dealt it, leaving the man stunned and a little shaken. He catches Folloch with the tip of his sword and the priest crumples to the floor, unconscious and dying. The jeweled rod falls from his hand, and as it clangs onto the floor, the illusion of jewels and gold shimmer away, revealing it to be just a plain iron bar. Apparently, whatever sort of magic it once contained has been thoroughly drained away through excessive use.

"Th-thank you!" Says the remaining guard as he shakes his head clear, "I... Just, thank yo- Busso!" He drops his sword and rushes over to the mangled remains of his fellow guard, kneeling down beside him. Danicka acts in a very similar manner towards Yaiho, but unlike the guard, the big man’s wounds are easily healed with the aid of magic.

I assume you'll want to use one of the potions from Ninefingers?

The crowd that was following you have stopped their chase, some villagers start wandering back towards the centre, looking very confused, but the majority start cheering and embracing each other. One heads straight towards you, with a sad smile, "I saw what happened, and I want to make this abundantly clear." He says looking in Yaiho's eyes, "You may have swung the weapon, but it was Folloch who killed Busso! Not a single one of us will hold any ill feeling towards you, or your friends. In fact, we owe you a great debt." He starts shaking everybody’s hands, "I’m the Mayor of Allenstead, well I was before this one showed up..." He glances down at Folloch, and his disdain for the man is clear, "For a whole month, we have been under that vile man’s spell! At noon everyday, he would make us listen to his awful sermons as he flashed that gaudy rod at us, and everyday our belief in him and his false god redoubled. He was only in town for a day or two before I stepped down as mayor and he was unanimously elected!" He shakes his head, and looks back at the mostly complete statue at the centre of the village, "Then he ordered the construction of that monstrosity!"

Some more of the villagers have made their way over to the stables, and they start to press in on you again from all sides, but this time with smiles, hugs, and handshakes as they all express their gratitude for the return of their free will. Their celebrations are somewhat muted because of the death of a fellow villager, but they still start offering you tokens of their appreciation, small trinkets or coins. By the time everyone has had time to thank you, and with a sizeable donation from the mayor, you find yourselves in possession of reward worth three hundred gold pieces.

End of part 5.

As usual feel free to finish up here while I get the next part ready. Just in case you’re interested, other than the iron rod and mask, everything else on Folloch’s person and in the stables belong to the villagers.

Hearing the mayor speak, he simply says "I require a doctor, and a launderer."

Most of the village make their way to the tavern with their heroes, although a few stay behind to deal with the bodies. After a few drinks are raised for the fallen guard, and a speech from the mayor, everyone starts to celebrate and let their hair down after a month of non-stop work. Brock draws a small crowd of adoring fans as he retells how he almost single-handedly saved the village, occasionally drawing gasps from some of the more impressionable villagers, "Didn't it hurt?" They wonder when he describes how he ignored a near fatal wound in order to stop Folloch once and for all.

Umbru manages to slip away from the festivities and checks on Busso's family. It seems that this is a tight-knit community and the guard's wife and family always seem to have someone around to lend their comfort and support. On his way back from Brusso's house, Umbru sees some of the more inebriated villagers stumble out of the tavern to relieve themselves all over the statue.

With the final entry from the journal investigated, you have nothing left to do but wait for word on Ulisha. After a couple of days travel in a carriage, you spend the next week or so just waiting around in Daggermark wondering who will contact you first, Ulisha or Ninefingers. Fortunately, your time in Daggermark is very comfortable, and the Mooncrest's practically treat you like family, providing you with ample food and drink during your stay at the Harvest Moon Inn. Some of you decide to spend your ample free time either researching or asking around about the assassins that you know are after Ulisha.

Know. Local *or* Diplomacy (DC 15):

The assassins of Daggermark are more affordable than other hired killers. They refer to themselves as the Vessels Between, as they take targets from life to death.

Know. Local *or* Diplomacy (DC 20):
The more one is willing to pay, the more highly trained the assassin he can hire. The guild doubles as a school for assassins in training, and even these neophytes are available for hire.

Know. Local *or* Diplomacy (DC 25):
Assassins sent on missions outside of the city often work in pairs so as to better protect one another.

Finally, a dirty looking boy rushes into the Harvest Moon Inn and hands you a letter.

As promised I have found the location of that chatty half-orc and her fancy blade. Vessel Between assassins are preparing to take her out today, and my contact let me know where. Just wait a few hours and make your way to the place marked on the map and you'll have a mighty fine payday for little work. With this letter, I consider our deal to be complete.

I hope you never contact me again,
-Ninefingers

After you have had time to read the letter, the boy holds out his hand expectantly, and with a big smile says, "Billy says yous lots pays well for messages!"

It turns out Ulisha's hideout is only just outside Daggermark, and it'll only take a couple of hours to get to her if you rush. :)

As usual, you have time to buy any equipment you might want, and all your health and abilities are restored to full.

Brock wanders the seedier parts of Daggermark, inquiring about the assassins from his usual host of ner'do'els, his people so to speak. He does learn little about the assassins, which he shares when the group reunites.

"I didn't learn overmuch, but these Daggermark assassins, or Vessels Between, seem to be plentiful and economical here. You can even hire the apprentices, though at a reduced cost I assume, so we could face any range of skilled foes."

He then relaxes, waiting for news and letting his wounded side take a break. The wound was healed fine, that country doctor knew his needlework, but still tender.

Upon reading the boy's message, Brock grins at Yaiho and, completely out of character, flips the boy a gold coin.

The look of shock on their faces is easily worth a paltry gold, we've got a nice payday coming

Reading the note, he ventures, "This is either legit, or a trap. Half of me hopes it is a trap and I can go make Mr. Ninefingers into Mr. Nofingers, but I suspect we scared him enough that he's playing us straight. Shall we go rescue our disreputable damsel in distress then?"

He queries as he finishes his drink and gathers his things.

Umbru has a quick look in the cave, but soon realises that it is far too shallow for everyone even to fit in, let alone defend. Danicka searches the horizon, she sees no signs of danger, but does realise that the hilltop offers a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. It seems that Ulisha chose a good spot to set up camp, and it should be fairly easy to spot anyone's approach.

"Vessel Between assassins! I didn't think the Tullivors would go so far, so quickly..." She frowns for a second, looking worried, but she soon breaks out into a defiant grin, "Okay, stories later then!" She winks at Brock, "I'm looking forward to a long tale or two." Throwing her squirrel onto the fire, she starts looking around the hilltop for defensible positions, "The cave is safe, nice and comfortable for a good nights sleep too, but not a great place to make a stand. You have the right idea though! There's just no running from the Assassins guild." She stops searching for a second and turns to face all of you, "Thank you! I'm not sure what coin you're talking about miss, but if I survive the day, you'll have my eternal gratitude."

What we have here is a rare opportunity to set up an ambush instead of being ambushed. Place yourselves on the Map and roll for stealth and perception. You'll get bonuses on your stealth rolls depending on your hiding place (hiding in the cave, for instance, will make it very hard to spot you until the assassins are at the top of the hill). Also, assuming that the assassins walk up the way you did, place the X at the sort of position you'd like the assassins to be when you spring your ambush ;)
