Lissaya ignores the rude Chelaxian. And falls into formation. She quickly bores of the conversation and takes to the air as often as she can through the journey. At one moment, while walking through the ruined siege towers, she tells the party that her first mission was to rescue a lost Pathfinder from one of those old towers.

Lissaya spurs her bird into a flanking position, shouting for it to tear the hippogriff apart. As it attacks, she draws and swings her own morningstar.

Well that looks bad for them...

Lissaya's roc swoops from the sky, raking the hippogriff with its claws. It shrieks in pain and makes to stagger away, but the halfling bonks it over the head with her morningstar, and it falls over in a heap. Thaia blasts the second hippogriff with her rifle, causing a minor explosion of blood, and Gratus summons his eagle. The bird rakes at the remaining conscious hippogriff, landing on it from above and digging its claws and beak into the magical beast's flesh. The creature shrieks and falls to the ground.

"Or...or that," Janira says as silence falls over the small clearing. Lhunk stands over the downed hippogriffs scythe now in hand. "Um...well, you guys certainly won't need my help dealing with any unfriendly critters in the caves! And to think I was worried about giant centipedes...heh." She visibly shakes off her shock, then grins at you. "No need to do worse to these poor creatures, I think--they were probably just looking for a meal. Picked the wrong prey, this time! Congratulations on your first battle together, all!" So saying, Janira resettles her backpack and cheerfully makes her way deeper into the forest...

Janira urges you to keep up with the march, in order to make it to the mountain caves by dusk. "If we don't get there tonight...well, tonight's the full moon. I'm just worried that if we don't get there soon, the gillmen will be gone and we'll be left with just as many questions!" Your path is frequently blocked by fallen trees, boulder fields, and the like, but with Lissaya's eyes above and her skill picking out a path, you're able to make good time, and as dusk is starting to fall Janira starts to comment on elements of the terrain that she recognizes from her previous mission.

Suddenly, the dense forest opens into a wide clearing at the base of a sheer cliff. Thick vines cover the surface of the cliff stretching thirty feet overhead. "Here! The cave entrance is beyond those vines," Janira says with a broad smile as she walks to the cliff's face. She pulls back several layers of vegetation to reveal a narrow crack in the cliff's surface. "This is where I saw the gillmen enter."

As she motions toward the aperture, the surrounding woods come alive with the sound of small animals fleeing some unseen danger and a large creature crashing through the undergrowth. The halfling worriedly remarks, "Quick, take cover before whatever it is spots us!" As if she'd summoned the creature with her words, a massive horned monstrosity emerges from the trees. Standing eight feet tall on a pair of cloven hooves and wielding a tremendous ax, the bull-headed creature roars with unbridled anger when it spots the group.

"A minotaur!" Janira cries. "There's little chance we can stand against it. Take this bag," she continues, pulling off her backpack, "and head deeper into the caves. Finish your mission. I'll lead it away from the caves, lose it in the forest, and rejoin you when I can. Now go! [larger]GO![/larger]" She heaves her backpack into the cave, casts a spell, and then darts toward the minotaur before turning to lure it away!

Gunter turns white with terror as the Minotaur appears and he is the first to dash into the cave, his iron pot clanging against the censer that hangs from his pack. Inside, he peers around in the darkened subterranean gloom before he scrambles as far from the entrance as he can and presses himself against the rock wall and tries to calm himself. "It's too b-b-big to g-get in here, right?" he says, more to himself than the others.

Front hall here I come!

Without a word--only a mechanical *KLAK KLAK* Thaia moves calmly forward out of the shrub, musket in the crux of her elbow, toward the beast. She takes careful aim above the receding halfling's head lining up on the minotaur, and squeezes her musket's trigger.

There's no map, but Thaia attempts to close within 30 feet of the minotaur to trigger point blank shot. Minimally, she wants to be within 40 feet--the first range increment for her firearm to resolve the attack as a touch attack. If that's not possible, but she can close to within 80 feet, she uses a grit point to use the Dead Eye deed to resolve the attack as a touch attack but takes a -2 on the attack roll for ranges beyond 40 feet (and out to 80 feet).

Map's up, and I've moved you 30' from starting, Thaia--that puts the minotaur 120' away. Are you going to take the shot with a -4 penalty, or move closer?)

Janira whirls. "Thaia! I'll lead it off! You worry about your Confirmation!" She's drawn her whip as she moved, and turns now to face the creature...

As Thaia's shot rings out, Gratus loads his crossbow with the help of a spell from Gunter. Lissaya flies out into the open air on her roc, taking a shot at the minotaur--but she misses. Francis moves toward the front of the cave, while Benny takes a few seconds to scout further in. Lhunk moves forward, drawing his scythe to come to Thaia's aid...not that she seems to need it!

Benny:
You do not see anything that looks like a trap--or anything remarkable--in the cave. It is very dark, but you can see that the five-foot-wide passage proceeds for about twenty feet before opening into a wider area.

The minotaur bellows in rage and pain and charges straight toward Thaia...but ends up stuck, waist-deep, in the stream to your south, struggling against the rapidly flowing waters! Savage as he may have been, he was a creature of intelligence and consciousness, the same as you or I--I've half a mind to go heal it!" She spares a slightly caustic look for the whole group. "At least it had the wit to retreat when faced with an evidently more powerful foe..."

She sighs. "Still, I suppose I can't blame you for your zeal. Well, your zeal to protect a fellow Pathfinder, at least. I just hope you'll keep in mind, once you get into those caves, that not everything you meet can, or needs to be, shot to death." Huffing slightly, the halfling trudges up to the cave mouth and plops down outside of it. "Now someone pass me my backpack--I've got to write an official report about this incident. I'll wait for you folks to finish exploring the caves out here. This is, after all, your Confirmation!" She smiles at you more genuinely. "Be careful in there. Honestly what is the Society thinking--allowing halflings in without even some sort of trial period. And what if wounded and depleted from our explorations we had come out to meet that waiting for us in the dark? At least I might win a trophy from this- this waste of precious time.

Thaia reloads and goes out to check the beast.

Then she casts light upon the barrel of her musket.

Lhunk unstraps Janira's backpack from his chest and hands it to the halfling woman with an apologetic smile. "Lhunk stopped when cow man try to run. You were in danger, and mean lady used her thunder stick to hit cow man, so Lhunk thought he could help. Here is your backpack," the man says before nodding and following the group.

Lissaya frowns as the minotaur goes down, disappointed at the prospect of a hunt cut short. But her love of duty being greater than her love of hunting, she shortly dives back down to the cave and enters with the rest of the party.

Francis rolls his eyes at the move and heads back into the cave.

Investigating the minotaur, Thaia discovers that it is breathing raggedly and unconscious, but still alive...

On the hilltop, Janira smiles faintly as she takes her bag from Lhunk. "Thank you...I don't blame you, Lhunk. And like I said, I appreciate you all helping out here. I truly didn't think that we could stand against a minotaur...I guess you all proved me wrong!" She laughs.

Will give a few hours for anyone else to post but then will move forward into the cave!

In the cave

"The chiselled cave drawings of fish." She says running her hand against the wall.

Whoops, more time passed than I meant to...stupid life.

Thaia executes the minotaur, bits splattering across the field, as the rest of the party proceeds into the cave...

----------------------------

Inside, the seven of you (well, eight counting the roc) proceed slowly down the passageway the cave makes. "Be safe!" Janira calls from the entrance. "Don't forget to take good notes!"

The tunnel winds its way into the mountain, forcing you to walk single-file most of the time. Occasionally you hit wider stretches, where two of you can walk abreast (if dodging stalagmites), but then sections will crop up where the cave walls narrow to just three feet wide, and the larger members of your group have to turn sideways or take their packs off in order to squeeze through. The caves are damp: the walls sweat, and water drips on you from stalactites, running cold down backs and arms. The carvings that Thaia pointed out appear throughout the caves, and seem to be increasing in frequency as you make your way into the bowels of the mountain. There are squids, dolphins, sharks, and other sea creatures, along with more abstract carvings, usually spiral shapes of some kind.

After about forty minutes' journey, you start to notice another feature: lichen. Some sort of fungus grows over the cave walls, and it glows as well, providing a soft, bluish light. The carvings, which are becoming still more frequent, seem to act as a platform for the lichen, and those designs stand out more boldly against the soft glow of the walls. The fungus provides only dim light, so I'll assume you keep your light spells active unless you tell me otherwise.

The narrow tunnel twists and turns before slowly opening to a wider passage. A large hole spans the cave's width and stretches ten feet down the path. At the bottom of the pit, you can see peering over the edge, lies a small bundle of cloth surrounded by a number of sharpened stakes.

Just to be clear, the pit spans the ten-foot-wide passage and is ten feet in diameter. What will you do?

Knowledge (Dungeoneering) or Survival DC 10:
This pit is clearly artificial (not just the stakes at the bottom, the whole thing). It's too cleanly made, and the edges have been rounded to avoid creating an easy way to climb out.

Knowledge (Dungeoneering) or Survival DC 15:
As above, and you'd guess that this pit has been here for at least a year.
