The cheetah lingers for just a moment as it sizes up the group lined up a short distance away, trying to single out whatever might be the easiest prey in the bunch. A sudden clanging noise distracts it, however, and draws its attention to a being standing in the very middle of the group, somewhat in front of the others. His flesh seemed to shine in the sun. Perhaps the shiny flesh will be tasty, the cheetah has never tried it before.

Suddenly, the cat squares its shoulders, and its body turns into an image of athletic grace as it rockets forward toward the group. It closes the distance with unbelievable speed. A stray crossbow bolt flies toward it, but by the time the bolt is at the right height, the cheetah is already within a few dozen yards. In the last 20ft of its charge, Denair suddenly explodes out from within the trees, following behind the blur of feline power. A few more feet, and the cheetah launches itself through the air at Willem, its claws extended and its jaws full of razor-sharp teeth open wide. A spear jabs out at it, but misses its mark as well.

Yeah, this thing can charge up to 500ft once per hour! Crazy!
The cheetah finds that the shiny skin is hard, however, and it fails to find purchase on its prey. Just then, Denair steps up behind the cheetah and slams a fist down at its back. The cat is able to react in time, however, and leaps out of the way, baring its fangs and roaring at the unfamiliar creature that had attacked it.

Just to give you an idea of how we're set up here. The party, excluding Denair, is lined up at the edge of a steep decline into the valley. The cheetah has attacked Willem and is standing right in front of him. Meredith, Saritirnen, and Farshaya are standing near him. Denair is behind the cheetah, flanking it with Willem.
I still need Farshaya's round 1 action.

Honorbound Emissaries

Sorry Farshaya. That was entirely my bad. I'll definitely allow that flurry, but will have to delay your turn to do it, since you can only prepare a standard action.

The cheetah's charge is met with a furious assault from the Pathfinders as spells and attacks begin to fly from all around it.

Cheetah Will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Jann's spell twists the poor creatures mind, though it is still ready to attack the person nearest to him. Despite its confused state, the jungle cat manages to avoid Denair's powerful headbutt, perhaps purely based on instinct. Avoiding the eidolon's attack distracts it enough, however, to allow Farshaya to step forward with complete stillness of mind and deliver two lightning-fast strikes. The first punch cracks one of the cheetah's ribs and punctures its lung, but the second strike ends the creature's misery as he brings another fist down on the cheetah's neck and crushes its spinal cord, killing it instantly.

COMBAT OVER! Sorry you didn't get a chance to act in that one, Laiashi. There'll be other opportunities, so no need to worry. :D

With the threat managed, the Pathfinders turn once again to face the challenge before them. You stand on the edge of a steep decline, the rim of which is lined with interspersed megaliths with some kind of ancient writing carved into them.

With his deep understanding of languages, Jann is able to determine that the megaliths all give the name for the valley before you, along with that city that it once contained. The valley, it would seem, was called the Valley of Broken Blood, and the city within, Ashkurhall.

With Denair anchoring the knotted rope atop the slope, you are all able to easily descend into the valley. As you reach the bottom, you find yourselves beneath a dense canopy of tall jungle trees. Due to the limited sunlight that comes through the canopy, the jungle floor is largely devoid of undergrowth, save for extremely small and sparse vegetation. The majority of the jungle floor is made of massive root structures from the ancient trees and moss-covered rocks.

As you enter the jungle, you easily discover and follow the trail of the kobolds and miners, who did not work to conceal their tracks once they got this far. The tracks lead you through the jungle to a flowered clearing 2 miles from the ridge. The dense forestation of the valley jungle thins here, opening up enough to reveal the sky through the canopy. Beneath this opening, an ancient ruin consumed by the jungle is barely visible. Vines and leafy foliage encrust toppled blocks of quarried stone, tall grass grows up between derelict paving stones, and squat statues depicting dwarves in heavy armor stand crooked or fractured entirely from the infiltration of twisting roots. Among the more notable features here are the exotic flowers—tall, pitcher-shaped, golden blooms with seven petals, the interior of each a deep red. The soothing fragrance of the flowers fills the valley, and motes of pollen drift lazily in the air.

Saritirnen raises a hand to halt the party and begins to investigate the clearing, prodding aside clumps of thick bushes.

Knowledge (nature) DC15:
The plants and bushes in this clearing are heart-eater blossoms, a breed of inanimate carnivorous plants that feed on the blood and marrow of cadavers. These flowers are typically found in northern Avistan and were most prominent in the lost nation of Sarkoris.

You recognize two growths of unusual flowers as aggressive carnivorous plants known as xtabays.

Second Knowledge (nature) DC17:
The lazily drifting particles in this clearing are actually xtabay pollen, a sleep-inducing agent.

Saritirnen:

Sorry, Jann, forgot to cross that one off on the map. That xtabay is already down, thanks to a crit from from Willem. The only enemy left is the leafray, which is flying 10ft above the ground over by Denair. Since that was my mistake, if you're able to make a ranged attack against the leafray or reach it in some other way, I'll let you keep those attack rolls!

This reminds me that I've neglected to purchase a ranged weapon for Farshaya--even a sling! I have failed Pathfinder 101 :(.

Farshaya cups whistles appreciatively as Meredith's and Jann's projectiles slam into the leafy bird-thing. "Hey now, thassa way t'do it!" He runs over near Denair, ready to reach up and snatch the creature in a crippling crush.

Though they have the best reach of everyone, Saritirnen and Denair are unable to catch the flying, plant-like creature. Laiashi's incredible speed, however, enables her to make a shallow cut along the leafray's wing. The leafray reaches its new position and is quickly met with a flurry of deadly ranged attacks, courtesy of Meredith and Jann. The leafray goes limp and falls toward the earth, but as it comes within reach, Farshaya catches the beast and, perhaps just for good measure, slams it down to the jungle floor.

COMBAT OVER! You guys are making short work of these critters! I'll have to see about doing something about that... >:D

As the plant creatures shrivel away, you once again begin perusing the clearing, and a slight groan greets your ears. Just on the other side of one of the xtabays, you find a badly wounded woman wearing a dirty uniform similar to the one the miners back in the camp were wearing. Upon closer inspection, you find that the woman is incapacitated but appears stable. The stitching above the left breast pocket on her shirt bears the name Diane.

Those of you who do not immediately tend to Diane, find some stray equipment among the skeletons littering the clearing. You find a suit of +1 studded leather armor, a masterwork scimitar, and two potions. Laiashi also collects some of the xtabay's pollen and, in the process, realizes that several of the plants growing here are key components in expensive medicines. She harvests sundry alchemical and medicinal reagents from them.

"Well, that was fast." Meredith grins as she reloads her crossbow and grabs her mace. "Let's keep an eye out for anymore plants that want to eat us." Meredith taps Denair with a wand, and a field of energy forms around her.

Meredith offers her wand when she sees the unconscious woman. "Can someone help her?"

Meredith investigates the potion's contents.
