It was shortly after sunset night when the beloved (?) Venture Captain Drandle Dreng summoned you to the briefing room of the Grand Lodge of Absalom, although as usual, he was nowhere to be seen when you arrive. You settle down to wait for the mercurial leaderr.
Gitano Frallino |
Gitano Frallino sweeps into the briefing room in Skyreach, expecting to make a dramatic entrance.
First one here. So much for being fashionably late.
Gitano looks over the room, pocketing a few office supplies that might prove useful.
He takes a seat, leans back in the chair, drums his fingers on the table.
♫Need a little patience, yeah
Just a little patience, yeah
Some more patience, yeah
I've been walking the streets at night,
just trying to get it right♫
Guns N' Roses Patience
Rogar the Relentless |
Rogar bursts into the room with a worried look on his face.
"I'm not late, am I?"
Seeing only Gitano in the meeting room, the bear of a man bursts out laughing and gives him a vigorous, vice-like handshake.
"Ah, good to meet you! Rogar's my name, though some add 'the Relentless', usually if they get on the wrong side of me."
He then plonks down on the sturdiest looking chair and places his muddy boots where they aught not be.
"So, whaddaya think oldboy Dreng has in store for us?"
Ivar the Boneful |
Following Rogar into the meeting room, is a sleek and powerful wolfhound bedecked in chainmail. He gives Gitano a curious sniffing before attending his post next to Rogar.
Gitano Frallino |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Gitano returns Rogar's handshake and leans down to Ivar, scruffing his ears, "Help yourself to a noseful, friend."
"Who knows what the V-C has up his frayed sleeves this time. Usual sketchy summons. If cabbages were any more taciturn, we'd call Dreng 'drandlekraut.'"
Gitano winks at the Northman and settles back into his chair with practiced nonchalance.
Baied Eldourha |
Baied enters the place at a steady pace.
Her clothes, throught not ostentatious, are of good quality, and the symbol of Abadar is displayed on her chest.
The silverhaired half elf looks at the the two men, and the wolf.
A pleasure to make some new acquaintances. My name is Baied Eldourha, and I am a devoted servant of the Master of the First Vault.
She waits politely until the men have the occasion to introduce themselves
Rogar the Relentless |
Rogar's bellowing laughter and following wistful daydream about talking cabbages almost keep him from noticing the new arrival. Reaching out from his relaxed position to deliver another bone crushing handshake, he gives Baied a sly smile.
"A ditch digger and wall builder, eh? I'm more of an ol' Estig kinda guy, but it takes all sorts. Just don't take it personally when I stiff you on the bill when we're done!"
He leans back in his ominously creaking chair, chuckling to himself.
Ivar the Boneful |
Ivar eyes Baied eagerly, but he's a strict follower of the church of "Good Boy" and settles for sweeping the floor directly behind him with his tail.
Baied Eldourha |
Baied shakes whatever might remains of her hand, wincing in pain.
I'm sure we'll find ways to cooperate. You're not the first follower of Ol Deadeye I meet. As for "stiffing the bill", you already own me a new hand...
Zavubak |
Wearing the stillest of expressions on his face, a half-orc stiffly walks into the briefing room. He determinedly looks for the group that have been requested, his eyes narrowed as if to project two lasers as he scans the room.
Then, he pulls out a canteen and pours it into a mug, sniffing it delicately. "Ah, a child once told me nothing makes a morning right like a nice cup of hot chocolate." He tilts it into his mouth and gulps it down.
"A resourceful looking team," he says, offering handshakes all around. A shoulder tattoo of a black dragon is emblazoned on his grey-green flesh, and his fingernails are overly sharp, even for a half-orc. The skin around his hand features deep crevices and gashes, as if they had once been double their current size, and then shrunk back down.
Gitano Frallino |
"Well met, Baied." Gitano bows and brushes his lips against the lady's hand. "There, that should make it all better."
He turns to the half-orc entering the briefing room. "Welcome, Zavubak. You bear a striking resemblance to my own cousins, Mudbone and Blood Bucket Frallino, who share your earthy skin tone and fierce tattoos."
Zavubak |
Zavubak nods. "Mudbone and Blood Bucket are not your traditional orc names. I'm curious to know how they earned such aliases, but I think old man Drendle-Dreng may not appreciate our banter. That is, if he actually gets here," he says with a muffled laugh.
Rogar the Relentless |
Seeing Zavubak's powerful hands, Rogar goes three for three and and gives the half-orc an excessively firm handshake while shooting Baied a teasing look.
"A new hand? Nonesnese! See? The half-breed can take it, and so can you. His hot chocolate could use some cheep Sargavan whiskey and whipped cream, though..."
At the mention of Dreng's absence, his face contorts with mock worry.
"Well I sure hope he gets here... Otherwise I've put on my pants for no reason at all today!"
GM kuey |
I'll just get kick things off first, and wait for Reese to report along the way.
Just then, the elderly figure of Drandle Dreng steps into the office. He turns and stares at Rogar, having caught the last part of his sharing. "Well, I sure am glad that you have them on today! The sight of hairy legs might turn me off my dinner later!" He pauses here, then adds, "Mine excepted, of course."
He grunts as he flops himself down on the armchair at the corner of the room and scans the room. "Hmm, seems we are still missing one." He glances at the papers in his hand. "A ... Reese? Ah well, he can catch later."
With that, Dreng settles even deeper into the cushions. "Now you must be wondering why I summoned you here today. You see, just this morning, a junior member of the Society reported back to the Lodge. Well, crawled back would be a better word. Jonton had just returned from the River Kingdom, from a lawless settlement by the name of Thornkeep, deep within Echo Wood. What, for his team, started out as a reconnaissance expedition of this den of evil and villainy turned out to be so much more." He pauses here, clearly for dramatic effect, but looks disappointed at the apparent lack of reaction from his listeners, and so he soldiers on.
"Oh well, I would not bore you with the happenings, politics and whatnot of the forest stronghold and its surroundings. What is of keen interest to the Society is what they stumbled upon - the Halls Under the Hill! It seems that beneath the Brokenhelm Hills and the walls of Thornkeep, lies an ancient dungeon, a maze filled with magic and madness, apparently dating back thousands of years! How word of such a site not reached our ears, I can only attribute to the chaos and lawlessness of the region. But never too late, for it seems that past adventurers that had dared the dungeons met with little success."
"But it seems that our little team of intrepid junior Pathfinders clearly were more competent than the usual run-of-the-mill grave diggers." Not realising the little Freudian slip, Dreng becomes more animated as he continues. "They entered what was termed the Accursed Halls and through great skill and some luck, actually managed to clear not one but two of the levels of the dungeon! The sights they saw, the creatures they encountered, the treasure they found!" Dreng stops to catch his breath, caught up by his own excitement.
"But oh, they had to turn back before delving to the third level. Three of the four members had succumbed to the monsters, leaving Jonton the sole survivor by then. At least he managed to return to share with us their findings."
"So now, the Society is quietly mounting an expedition to explore the depths of this dungeon. Quietly, so to not alert those Aspis snakes, and also not to rile what passes for the local government. Your team is the first insertion team, and your job is just to explore as much of the third level as possible. Subsequent teams will take turns to delve deeper and deeper." He wags his finger at you, and admonishes, "Now, don't get it into your head to explore even deeper! Preliminary research we've managed to dig up indicates that this ruins go much deeper. It is more important that you survive and return to pass the Society information, so put aside whatever delusions of grandeur you might have."
"As for this level, the records show little, but it once housed the workshop of a wizard named Nhur Athemon, where he carried out his arcane and alchemical experiments. So we have dubbed this the Forgotten Laboratory as a working name. But that was thousands of years ago, so who knows what has moved in his place since then."
"Now, this is the usual time when you ask me questions, so go ahead. But really, that is the extent of information that we have currently. Hence this expedition in the first place." Dreng blows on his beard, and settles back into his chair, glancing at each of you in turn.
Rogar the Relentless |
Rogar beams with joy at Dreng's mention of a forest stronghold, but that is slightly lessened when the topic moves to the dungeons beneath it.
"Does the Jonton fellow's report hint at what we might encounter in this 'Forgotten Laboratory'?"
Gitano Frallino |
Gitano clears his throat and raises his hand. "It would be useful to speak to Jonton ourselves. Can you arrange that, Cap'n?"
He looks around at the others. "I'd like to know more about the sorts of creatures and traps Jonton's team encountered. What did they learn about the wizard Nhur Athemon?"
"Who was the team's Society handler in the River Kingdoms or more locally? Where did they establish their base camp? Were the remains of Jonton's team recovered, or should we be on the lookout for them?"
Desna knows, Dreng loves to play stump-the-chump.
GM kuey |
"You must understand that Jonton never actually got to the Forgotten Laboratory. He wisely chose to turn back after the rest of his party was decimated and he realised that the dungeons continues on for much longer than they had expected."
"And unfortunately, he was rather delirious with a high fever by the time he returned to Absalom. He mumbles of goblins and undeads, traps of both mechanical and arcane nature. Strangely, he makes no mention of this Nhur Athemon. It was only on his return from some of his description did we piece things together to draw the link to this wizard. What we manage to surmise is that this dungeon was the underground complex of Athemon's original tower. His enemies destroyed him and his tower but must have missed what was below ground. From Jonton's descriptions, the initial levels his unfortunate party stumbled through served as some kind of massive storage cellar for the wizard."
"Again, I warn though that we know little of what to expect at the third level, and it can be dangerous to simply extrapolate based on the earlier levels. Jonton did manage to note that the doors leading to the Forgotten Laboratory seemed not to have been used for some time."
I'm trying not to give too much spoilers about level 1 and 2 in case you play that part of Thornkeep later on. Also, there is very little other background info given in the module. I'm making most of the things up, but then again, I enjoy doing that. :)
GM kuey |
"Who was the team's Society handler in the River Kingdoms or more locally? Where did they establish their base camp? Were the remains of Jonton's team recovered, or should we be on the lookout for them?"
"well, the long and short of it is that there is none at Thornkeep. Hence, the need for discreteness. You could likely move around the settlement for supplies for it is a relatively large one, but do not advertise your purpose there." Dreng then ponders, trying to figure out how best to respond to the last query. "And if there are ... remains left to recover, please do so."
Zavubak |
I appreciate you purposely leaving those details out!
Zavubak listens closely, nodding along as Gitano asks the important questions. "Say, Dreng, about how far is Thornkeep form here? I'd like to know how much preparation we may need to deal with. Is anything more known about Nhur Athemon?" He rubs the backs of his hands and glances at Baied for a moment.
At least I won't be traveling with any elves. Well, pure elves.
"I do have some provisions to purchase before we depart," he says, hefting his orc double axe in front of him. "And perhaps some claws to sharpen." His eyes flicker red.
GM kuey |
"The passage for your journey has been arranged and the ship will set sail first light tomorrow when the tide turns. The journey will be an arduous one, bringing you through Andoran, Druma and finally over Lake Encarthan into the River Kingdom, a journey that would likely take a ten-day. Whatever supplies for the journey would be provided but once you reach Riverland, you're on your own. Get whatever supplies you need this evening. Remember, though. If you need more supplies, Thornkeep is itself a sizable settlement that you can re-stock, so long as you do not draw unnecessary attention to yourself."
"As for Athemon, his arcane power was apparently strong enough to raise his tower solely by his magic alone. Of course, that would have been thousands of years ago, so who knows how much embellishment there is. If indeed these Thornkeep ruins are part of his underground complex, a detailed exploration of it could help confirm if indeed Thornkeep stands over the site of his arcane tower."
"If you have no further questions, then quickly be on your way," Dreng says as he waves you off. "I have other important tasks," he continues, as he sinks deeper into his chair.
So basically just prep your equipment for the Thornkeep ruins itself. Once everyone is ready, I'll jump us to the start of the dungeon, and specifically level 3.
Rogar the Relentless |
"Go through the dungeon, but not to deep and be snappy about it. Sounds simple enough."
I'm good to go.
Zavubak |
"Very well, Mr. Dreng, we will report with our findings. And if a goblin should be clawed to death in the process, so be it," he says with a wicked grin, then walks out of the briefing room.
When he returns, he's wearing a massive plate armor, the front engraved with the same image of a black dragon as his tattoo, yet the symbol is humbly off to one corner of the plate rather than centered upon it.
"Off to this dungeon, then?"

It was a rather long and tiresome journey, which took the adventurers first by a short sea ride into Andoran, then as far upriver as sea craft could go towards the Aspodell Mountains. Then it was a short overland trek into Druma before boarding another ship downriver, into Lake Encarthan. It was then smooth saling through the rivers past Razmiran into the River Kingdoms, finally alighting at Daggermark. From there, it was another 3-day journey via mucky riverlands towards Echo Wood and finally into the rough town of Thornkeep.
Riding into the settlement nearing dusk, your eyes are drawn to town's castle, which had clearly seen much better days. More of note is the small bluff that it sits upon, the bluff which if Jonton's directions are true, hide the entrance to the dungeons of Thornkeep. Heeding to the Venture Captain's commands, the party kept a low profile in the town (or as much as the flamboyant Gitano and Reese could manage), electing to settle down for the night at the more disreputable inn of Thirsty Ogre that is sited further away from the town green. The rough and tumble clientele looked to make trouble, but the charismatic duo of Reese and Gitano talked their way out of it, and the party had an mostly uneventful night.
The party set off early next morning to not draw unwanted attention, and easily found the entrance to the underground dungeon at the foot of the castle crag. Traversing through the hallways, you find walls made of dressed sandstone blocks, once magically fitted but now weathered and crumbling at the edges. Braziers enchanted with continual flame spells light most chambers, in which you can see signs of scattered battles and bodies of goblins that the carrion had not had sufficient time to dispose of.
The party followed along the rough directions that Jonton had provided the Society and made their way quickly to where he indicated was the doorway to the third level. In the final room before descending lies the bodies of what seemed to be Jonton's teammates, laid out carefully. Resolving to return their remains after the successful (?) completion of this mission, the intrepid party carefully descended to the next level.
GM kuey |
The narrow staircase ends in a short corridor leading to a large chamber, the center of which is dominated by a pool of stagnant water. An oily sheen covers most of pool, causing it to reflect a multitude of colors onto the walls and ceiling. The only light in this room emanates from a faintly glowing orb attached to the ceiling, and an acrid stench wafts heavily in the air. There is a simple wooden door in the eastern wall, and a set of ornate stone double doors to the south flanked by a pair of sandstone statues.

Ivar obediently starts to dive into the putrid water of the stagnant pool, bounding to the opposite side of the ooze. I've moved everyone's tokens because Ivar was grappled just when it left its original square so it couldn't have continued moving. This means no flank for Rogar or Ivar (but oozes can't be flanked anyway). Also means that Gitano couldn't have moved into Ivar's square.
Despite the ooze being _extremely_ slow moving, Rogar's alarm at seeing his companion grappled causes him to swing wildly, and his axe becomes embedded into the wall, and it was a few seconds before he could wrench it free.
Ivar, despite the pain, bites into the foul-tasting creature, tearing away a big chunk of it. This is followed shortly by Gintano's rapier which punches right through, swirling a deep hole in its body.
