Year of Boundless Wonder

You have been stationed at the Grand Lodge in Absalom, awaiting assignment for a mission of utmost importance. Things finally seemed in motion when Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng sent out a summons for available agents through the kitsune agent. Specialized in the history of Absalom, Dreng is known for putting off-duty agents to work on sundry tasks when he finds them resting within the city’s limits.

Coming to the meeting place — an odd choice of venue, as it is a street corner far from the Grand Lodge, the six of you wait miserably in the constant dreary drizzle. The area sees little human traffic, even more so with the incessant rain.

Talia hangs out around the meeting place, trying not to get too soaked by the rain. As she runs a whetstone along her sword's blade, she relates her recent run in with some gnoll slavers. "So we got on the ship, and took out most of the guards. Then this big ugly gnoll nearly takes my arm off, and I'm going down from blood loss. Last thing I do before passing out is slip my blade right into his heart, next thing I know the Sarenite is pulling me off the gnoll's mangy corpse."

Kronas whistles, clearly impressed by the story "That's quite an image." He pulls his collar up around his ears to protect against the rain, then crosses his arms and stamps his feet in an effort to keep warm "I think I would have immediately fainted with an injury like that! I tell you what... If we ever end up in a fight with questionable characters, I'll let you go ahead. I'm a gentleman like that." he says with a friendly smile.

Xander shifts slightly in his armor, the quiet half orc having listened intently to the story a faint grin on his face visible underneath his hood.

"Worry not my little friend, you are in good company."Xanders red dragon eyes scan the surrounding area and seeing the person they are supposed to meet sighs loudly.

"Next time, we get a meeting point that's out in the elements, if the contact isn't there waiting I vote we move indoors and wait there rather wait outside for who knows how long in the rain."

"Bloody slavers. That was one of the reasons I joined up with this whole outfit. Wanted to see if there was anyway I could save some kid the trouble I went through. Glad ta hear you bled one." Lincoln pulls his cloak a little closer to himself to stay warm in the the rain.

I hope my powder isn't getting wet. It's hard enough to shoot this thing when it's dry.

"Does anyone else find it a bit queer that we've been summoned to gather so far away from the Lodge proper?"

Lincoln realizes that he has just assumed that this rather disparate looking group that he's standing in the rain with were the right folks he was supposed to meet up with.

Are these other Pathfinders? There really isn't anyone else out here so I suppose this must be the group. First a fox brings me a summons and now this bunch ... I thought I'd seen it all.

Talia grins a bit. "Bled more than just the one, there's one slave trader who won't be continuing his trade at all. Didn't even give him a chance to beg. He certainly didn't care about his victims' begging, why listen to his?" She sounds brash, though you can detect a note of uncertainty in her voice, as if the killing wasn't as simple or easy for her as she acts.

He looks to Reynolds, smiling to himself "Perhaps it's a way to 'haze' new Pathfinders? Send them to a depressing corner of the city and make them wait for an intolerable amount of time. But this chap has the right idea..." he then turns to Draft with a theatrical flick of his soaked cloak "I agree with you. Next time we find somewhere dryer to wait."

Year of Boundless Wonder

With Sky Key complete, let's get this started! By the way, if you've not done so, please fill in the table at the maps and handout link.

After standing in the dreary rain for close to an hour, and feeling quite miserable, you see a lone beggar garbed in baggy robes approaching. The only figure visible in the constant drizzle, the beggar sticks out his hands for currency.

“Have you any coin to spare, fine folk?”

The question hangs in the air for only a scant moment before the figure pulls back his hood to reveal the wizened face of Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng. He gives a crooked smile, soaked head to toe from his unprotected time in the rain. His clothes smell faintly of cabbage.

“Sorry about that,” he says with a wink. “I always like to play a little joke on agents when I stumble across them during my jaunts into town. Now, why did I summon you fine folk here again…?” Dreng shakes his head from side to side, as though trying to knock water out of his ears, despite the constant downpour.

Noticing Katswiri, Dreng turns to face her while he speaks, and carefully enunciates his words. “Ah yes, the Wounded Wisp! I’m undercover now and can’t stray far from the site I’m watching, but I need someone to retrieve a package for me from that fine establishment. It’s among Absalom’s most storied taverns, you see, and one that holds a special place of privilege in the Society’s lore as the place where the organization began. Well, I could drone on and on about it, but standing out in the rain is doing none of us any favors.” As if anticipating agreement, the bedraggled venture captain produces a small slip of folded paper from one of his many stitched pockets. Dreng quickly shows a glimpse of the page’s contents: a map detailing the location of the Wounded Wisp bar.

“The bartender is a woman by the name of Heryn Gale, a fine lady who came to own the Wisp after the passing of her father from — oh, bah, it’s really getting too cold for me to give a proper history lesson! If you could just go to the Wisp, and tell Heryn you’re there to pick up my parcel, it would be most appreciated. I’ll be around here for several more hours at least.”

Speaking directly to Katswiri, he mouths carefully, "You got all that?"

History DC 10:

The Wounded Wisp was a bar once frequented by the original members of the Pathfinder Society before the Society was even formed. Inside the Wisp, acquaintances would share stories about their adventurous exploits with one another.

History DC 15:

Many volumes of the Pathfinder Chronicles came together under the Wisp’s roof. Famous Pathfinders like Eando Kline and the Seeker Osprey often stopped by for a drink while they relaxed in Absalom between assignments. Though not officially affiliated with the Society, the bar maintains good relations with Pathfinders, offering discounts and prompt service. The owners have always kept themselves and the Wisp afloat through the generosity of Society agents who spend coin at the establishment.

History DC 20:

Selmius Foster was one of the founding members of the Pathfinder Society, known to have frequented the Wisp often and occasionally taken up residence in a spare room between his travels. His celebrated exploits first appeared in Volume 1 of the Pathfinder Chronicles.

History DC 25:

Following the death of Selmius Foster on the island of Bhopan, his assistant Adolphus made several donations to maintain one of his mentor’s favorite sites. The exact arrangement between Adolphus and the owners of the Wisp was never disclosed, but it is said that some of this gold came from the same fortune that Adolphus used to found the Pathfinder lodge in Quantium.

Please make history checks for the above to uncover them. Remember you can make knowledge checks untrained for DC10, but not higher. Please note that the current year is 4716. Go ahead and to ask Dreng questions if you have any. And you can refer to the maps and handout page for a map of Absalom, and a picture of the beloved Venture Captain Dreng.

She is still relatively new to Absolom, and spends her time waiting taking in the nearby wet and dreary sights as she peers out beyond the rim of her wide brimmed hat, which glows with a soft, white light to illuminate her surroundings.

Katswiri gives him a smile, eyes twinkling as she replies in a slightly slurred, strangely soft accent. "I do! Thank you for your enunciation, but I have become quite adept at reading nearby mouth shapes, even when they are angled. I do it so often now, it has become second nature to me. Honestly, while this sounds a good deal less exciting than my first mission with the society, I am looking forward to something a little more...mundane. And I would like to visit the Whisp, I've heard of it but don't know a lot of details, beyond that its been frequented by pathfinders for a long, long time."

Sovereign Court

Year of Boundless Wonder

Dreng waves you off cheerily as the party proceeds on to the Wounded Wisp. All of you have heard of the building at some point, even in your early career as a Pathfinder. It is located in the Foreign Quarter district of Absalom, close to the grounds of the Grand Lodge, and you have no difficulty finding the establishment with the map Dreng provided.

Built from dark, discolored wood, the exterior of the Wounded Wisp is the image of an iconic dive bar. Stained and barred windows obscure direct vision into the establishment, though ruddy yellow light bleeds from a window in the front hall, which appears warmly welcoming for those standing outside in the freezing rain. The only distinguishing feature on the Wisp’s exterior is a thick wooden sign hanging from above the bar’s entrance. A brass ring fitted onto the sign anchors a lantern — referred to by the staff as “the wisp” — that hangs there during the evening hours, though it is obviously unlit now.

Refer to maps and handouts for the layout of the place and some of its inhabitants currently.

You enter via a long wooden hallway, heading north into the building itself. The walls are covered in numerous decorations and trophies left by successful Pathfinders who’ve donated minor paraphernalia to the bar. Immediately in front of you is a large closet contains various coat racks and shelves for patrons to place any equipment they don’t want to lug with them. A pimply teenage boy works here, hardly paying attention to the eclectic party that has come in. You eventually manage to get his attention to stow any gear you do not wish to lug around while in the tavern.

The smell of smoke and spilled ale assails the senses as you enter the main hall. Walls of dark-stained wood make up the sides of the Wounded Wisp, while well-used wooden tables are spread throughout the space. A raised area in the back of the establishment houses several additional tables and eating areas for groups seeking more than just a good drink. An austere bar supported by kegs instead of wooden panels commands the northern end of the room. A stained-glass cabinet stands behind the bar, its dark panes cracked in several spots, yet not so opaque as to conceal the several dozen types of hard liquor within. The noon-meal crowd has obviously started to gather, and you hear various snippets of conversations in the air.

"Have you heard? This Sir Reinhart of Kenabres, a Mendevian crusader who just arrived from the north, plans on attempting the Test of the Starstone today! Looks like the Shrine would need another alcove soon! Bwahahaha!"

"Have I told you the tale of the fabled Yasmin bint Faroud, favoured of the Ten? She sacrificed her life distracting Zythrustianax, draconic scourge of the Society, so dozens of junior agents could survive. Her act of benevolence is the epitome of cooperation within the Society."

You see a middle-aged woman standing behind the bar, slightly frazzled, but with a commanding presence nonetheless. She coordinates her various wait staff as a conductor manages an orchestra, whilst preparing the drinks for the customers. She spots your group entering and firmly exclaims, "Welcome, travellers to the Wounded Wisp. You have the look of new Pathfinders, I see. Come, come, take a seat and rest your feet! First round on the house for new initiates!"

At a nearby table, a female halfling is regaling a group of young adventurers with tales of past Pathfinders. "Oh, what she did was simply amazing! Yasmin transform herself into the form of a giant earth elemental to bar the way of the dragon! She stood in its path as it breathed fire again and again her way, buying time for the junior agents to flee below ground. Alas, Yasmin eventually fell, her earthern form unable to take the repeated fiery blasts. But her name and deeds live on. The next time you're at the Wall of Names, go look for her epitaph. And take a minute or two to remember her great deeds. A Pathfinder may pass, but their stories live on!"

As you look around, most of the patrons glance briefly your way, but shortly return to their business. A pair of half-orcs, male and female, sitting at the back of the main hall catch your attention, only because their boisterous laughter overwhelms everything else in the tavern. They appear to be playing the traditional half-orc game of drinking each other under the table, and it looks like they have only just started.

A bespectacled man with thinning hair dressed in scholarly robes is sitting at the corner on the raised platform studying a large tome opened in front of him. He looks up to take a break, and glances at each of your party carefully in turn. He especially examines the pistol hanging off Lincoln's belt with curiousity, but he eventually turns back to his book.

A middle-aged Keleshite man in blue robes and head wrappings sits near the bar, drinking by himself. A holy symbol of the goddess Sarenrae hangs about his neck. He clearly spots Xander's symbol of Iomedae hanging about his, and stares intently at Katswiri. He pauses briefly, then gestures towards the empty seats about him. "I see you're a holy servant of the gods, and you are touched by the very gods themselves! New Pathfinders? You're welcomed to join me. You and your companions, if they so desire. If you don't mind entertaining an aging Pathfinder past his prime, that is. Let us speak of gods and their teachings, Pathfinders and their history, and dangers we face on the road."

Feel free to mingle among the bar patrons. They might come in useful later. Or not. :)

Link takes his drink from the bar and lifts it in a toast of thanks to the woman behind the bar.

"Thank you kindly."

He takes the first refreshing sip and the alcohol warms him to the bones.

Ahhh. That's better. Those two in the back are clearly having a good time.

After savoring that first delicious sip, Link heads over to the table in the north corner sitting alone where he can get a look at the room and enjoy being in from the rain at least. As he scans the room he looks to see if any of the other patrons might pose a threat. After all they were sent here on a mission and no mission calling for 6 Pathfinders could possibly be this simple no matter how green they are. He hears the excited halfling telling her story and this invite from the kelishite. Link recognizes the examining eyes of the gentleman in the corner but thinks nothing of it.

Yeah. Yeah. It's a gun. I know you don't see them too often and all but it belongs to me and I've got it under control.

"Oh, I would love to join you! History has been a passion of mine for some time, and having just joined the society, I find myself absorbed learning so many new things and meeting so many new people. My name is Katswiri, recently of Osirion. What is yours?"[/b]

The keleshite laughs heartedly in response to Xander. "I certainly hope my 45 years have not put me past my prime!" He chuckles some more, but it gradually dies down and he lets out a deep sigh. "But perhaps it is not years that age you, but the experiences you go through." He shakes himself, as if brushing away some unhappy thoughts, and smiles warmly back at Xander and Katswiri. "Oh, but where are my manners! I am Aram bin Kaleel, a humble servant of Sarenrae, but you can already see that. In my spare time, I run a little store in the Coins district. Nothing fanciful - just knick knacks and curios. I come to this tavern from time to time. To the place where the Society first found its roots. And to meet young hopeful members like yourself, to perhaps remind myself of the youth I've had and lost. History buff, eh. Yes, the Society has had a long history. Not all of it glorious, but certainly with a good balance of brains and brawn, its members have gotten it to where it is today." He pauses here briefly, examining Katswiri. "Pardon me for being direct. You don't appear to be a priest of the gods, but you seem to have been touched by the divine somehow. How is that?"

Kronas wrote:
"Felicitations fellow Pathfinder, I couldn't help but overhear that extraordinary story. Do you know any others? Oh, but where are my manners! My Kronas, Kronas Kronglic..." Finally pausing for breath, he grabs her hand and shakes it vigorously.

The halfling looks up in wonder. Caught by surprise, she quickly returns the handshake with equal earnestness. She smiles broadly at Kronas' greeting, and replies, "I'm most glad that you enjoyed that! Being a relatively junior Pathfinder myself, I can remember what is like to be a new initiate. I can only hope that my stories of famous past Pathfinders can inspire us to emulate them in our deeds and live up to the good reputation of the Society! My name is Janira Garvix. Well met, Kronas! And of course, I have more stories. Come gather round. Do you know of Durvin Gest? He's an exemplar of our Society. Seeing through the treachery of the fabled Lens of Galundari, he chose to hurl the terrible lens down into the neverending Nemesis Well. But oh, what temptations he had to the overcome! The devils whispering their false promises, the succubus seducing him, ..." She continues her story with great animation, while the Pathfinder initiates around her listen intently.

The bespectacled middle-aged man raises his head again to look at Lincoln, again staring with interest at the pistol by his side. He seems to deliberate with himself for a while before getting off his seat to approach Lincoln. "Pardon me for interrupting your reverie. My name is Yargos Gill. I am a historian, specialising in military history. I've recently been doing my research on the number of military expeditions undertaken by Alkenstar, defending against its much more imposing neighbours. Their key to success seems to their invention and control of firearms. Unfortunately, I have never had the chance to personally study one firsthand. If I may be so bold, may I inspect yours? To truly understand their military campaigns, I trust I would need to understand this unique weapon of theirs."

Katswiri gives him a happy smile, a look of delight spreading across her face. "Well met Aram! You are quite observant; most people don't notice that about me unless I heal a wound or cleanse my food. Honestly, I do not know why I have been chosen by the gods, or for what purpose. I was lost, alone in the deep sands of Osiron in my youth. In some of my earliest memories, I was relying on my visions to avoid predators, and on my divine blessings for water, warmth and shade. Without the gods blessings, I would surely have perished."

Katswiri shrugs. "Since then, I have traveled and learned and sought my purpose in life. I might not know why I have been blessed, but I can do the best I can to put my gifts to good use. I think the Pathfinder Society will help me do just that."

Kronas listens to the story transfixed, when she finishes he says with a broad smile "You have a gift Janira, a real gift!" He looks to the gathered young adventurers "I hope you have bought this lady a keg's worth of drinks already. If not shame on you!" he playfully wags his finger at them before running to the bar and picking up his free drink "Can I have another one please? For Janira over there." he asks on his toes so that he can see above the bar, placing a coin where the mug used to be.

He returns to the table a drink in each hand "I'm a bit of a storyteller as well you know. Have you heard the one about the thief of Minkai and how he was outsmarted by Hiriko, the smallest child in all of Tian-min? Well, she started by collecting a whole load of Pidgeons..." he continues while offering the halfling one of the mugs.

Xander listens to Katswiri's reveal about being touched by the gods with surprise as he did not see any identifying symbols or markings that indicated as such.

"Worry not Katswiri, I have no doubt that your gifts will help the Pathfinder Society as much as they will help you use your gifts to the fullest."

Xander turns back to face the Sarenite, "well Aram I cannot promise when I will be able to visit your store in the future, but I'm glad that experienced pathfinders like yourself are around to help us rookies out."

Link is somewhat surprised by the forward nature of the old man.

"Well Yargos. I don't much like to talk about my time in the militia. Just know that certain factions shouldn't have taken control that have. I wear Serenity here to remind me of the lives that were lost in battle."

Link pulls the pistol "Serenity" out and holds it reverently showing Yargos it's workings from a distance, reluctant to let anyone else touch the delicate engineering.

"These things have saved Alkenstar from outside threats sure, but there are always those who would use a weapon like this for less noble reasons. Not everyone was thrilled with the way the battles were won. Seeing the brutality that Serenity can cause first hand changes a man. Gives him respect for the life he still has."

Link's eyes look down as he remembers the hardships of his past. A moment passes before he adds.

"I just want to do some good in this world. I guess that's why I'm here picking up a package for the Pathfinders"

Janira gladly receives the flagon of ale and listens rapturously as he begins his tale. When he ends, Janira is nodding away. She pipes up and addresses the Pathfinder initiates, "That's was good tale. It goes to show we must always caution ourselves not underestimate what we encounter. First impressions are easy to make, but seldom do they tell the whole story." Turning back to Kronas, Janira asks, "So Kronas, have you undergone your confirmation yet? And received your wayfinder?" At this, Janira pulls out what seems to be a compass hanging on a cord around her neck.

Xander wrote:

At this, Aram laughs out loud. "I can only hope so. Indeed, as a Pathfinder, it is important to stand on your own two feet, but be able to lean on a fellow agent when needed. It is encouraging to continually see young Pathfinders like yourself. Gives me hope that our Society would endure. It has gone through many upheavals over the years, sometimes close to tearing it apart. But it had been built on firm foundation and it seems to be going over stronger. It might be time for 'experienced' ones like us to step aside!" Again, he laughs out loud, but you can sense some bitterness in his laugh this time.

"Oh, enough self-pity. I would like to ask this, Master Xander. I'm sure you have heard of this Sir Reinhart's attempt of the Test of Starstone. Some have dismissed this as simple hubris - that to seek divinehood is beyond the ken of mortal men. Yet, your Lady of Valor has proven that mortals can ascend to divinity. What do you think of his attempt? Or you, Lady Katswiri."

Lincoln wrote:

Yargos leans in as close as he can to examine the pistol, taking care not to touch, clearly noting Lincoln's aversion towards anyone getting too close to it. He repeatedly mutters to himself, "Amazing! That a item so small can create such devastating damage. Changes the history of warfare completely!" When Lincoln finally completes the presentation, Yargos stands back up. "Thank you, Master... Oh I haven't gotten your name! Silly me. But I can see how a weapon like this can turn the littlest man into the mightest warrior. Oh, not that you are a little man. Oh dear, where's my mouth running to."

Lincoln wrote:

At this, Yargos nods and smiles in agreement. "Yes, I must agree. My path has crossed with the Pathfinders occasionally over the years. I remember the first time how together we stopped a zombie invasion of Absalom! Your Society has certainly done much good in the world, despite its occasional reputation of being graverobbers club." Not realising the potential offence that would cause, Yargos pauses briefly, then continues, "What package is this? Much be quite special to send a team of six Pathfinders to collect it."

"Oooh, it is prettyful!" Kronas says, admiring the Wayfinder. He starts to blush and, averting his eyes, he continues "Unfortunately, no matter how much I plead to the higher-ups, they always say I'm too inexperienced for the confirmation..." A thought occurs to him, and he seems to perk up again as he leans in and whispers conspiratorially "Truth be told, I'm on my very first real assignment today. Vital hush hush kind of stuff." He taps his nose a few times as he leans back out again "Is it true that some of these Wayfinders are older than my grandfather?"

"You're a worshipper of Iomedae, Xander? I actually don't know much about her. Some sort of goddess of honor, if I recall? Most of the scholars I've spent my time around worshipped Nethys, Irori, Shelyn, Sarenrae or one of the Osirion gods, and I'm afraid I am not overly familiar with many of the divinities. I must find time to make a more formalized study of religious matters, but I've been so busy with other academic pursuits I have never found the time."

Katswiri sips her drink, her voice turning throughtful and distant as she remembers the starstone falling through they sky, the crackling green energies of the sky key overhead keeping her in its time. "As for Sir Reinhart, If he is a good man, I wish him luck. The power of the starstone is real, and all too reachable by mortal men."

As I've said, first round on the house!" With that, the bartender places in front of Talia a cup of exquisite-smelling white wine. She then continues, "Come, come, dear. I thank you once again Master Link, and wish you an illustrious career with the Pathfinders. And perhaps after this mission of yours has completed, if you don't mind, I would love to hear about it. The work your Society do is certainly most fascinating." Yargos then gets up on his feet carefully and paces back to his table.

Janira's musical voice rings out. "I'm afraid I do not know how old your grandfather is! But yes, some of these wayfinders are truly ancient, and imbued with all kinds of magical stones. Mine, however, is only four years ago. It was newly crafted by Venture Captain Kreighton Shane when I completed my Confirmation. Perhaps after this assignment of yours today, you would be deemed ready for Confirmation. I wish you all the best for your task!"

This is true. I do intend to run The Confirmation after this, if anyone here is interested. :)

"Bah! Most accounts put him as an arrogant little twerp who can't see the hole in the ground with his eyes cast to the sky all the time." Aram almost spits in disgust. "But his character aside, what do you think of mortals aspiring for divinity? Is it plain hubris that drives such people? Or is there a guiding hand behind that? Even for one undertaken after drunken bet?" For the last, Aram is clearly alluding to the ascension of Cayden Cailean, the Drunken God.

Xander pauses and takes a long sip of his drink clearly thing about his words carefully.

"Sir Aram, i have thought on your question and while the task to attain divinity is undoubtedly difficult and challenging I believe it is necessary for mortals to be able to occasionally reach out and attain it none the less for if we mortals cant improve ourselves and help make the land a better place then their would be no purpose to anything as we mortals would be unable to do anything great or anything that has meaning."

"It is likely both. There is a guiding hand behind many things. I can see it in the patterns of the birds in flight, the dust that blows across barren stone, the blood that flows through the veins of the living. Much is connected to the will of the divine. But for all the gods influence our world, it is still up to us to choose our path, and we can fight and change our fate. Aspiring to reach divinity may be dangerously ambitious and perhaps a bit foolhardy, but it is a very human thing to do."

Katswiri shrugs and finishes her drink. "In this case, if the man is as arrogant and unwise as you say, I suspect it will not go well for him. But who can say for sure? I would not have thought taking the test on a drunken dare would work either, but, well..."

I would also probably be in for confirmation, if you're running it after this. That seems like a very good next step from here.
