Year of Boundless Wonder

Welcome to my PbP game. Hope you would have a blast!

Before we start, I would to share some of my general guidelines. (In spoiler tags to not take up space.)

Guidelines:

PbP Matters
1. This discussion thread is open for all OOC matters, so no ooc tag needed. For OOC matters in the gameplay thread, please use the [ ooc ] tag.

2. Please post at least once a day on weekdays, and once over the weekends. More frequent postings are certainly welcomed, especially when you roleplay with each other. And on certain days, I would be able be able to respond quite frequently as well. Nonetheless, I would attempt to curb my attention to resolve encounters at most once a day to give the chance for everyone to respond. If there're no posts from you for a while, I would NPC your character to keep the game going if necessary. If you need to be away for some time, please try to let me know in advance and we'll work out something.

3. If you have played and/or GMed this scenario before, please do not metagame or spoil the plot.

Rolls and Skill Checks
4. I would do your initiative rolls, as well as perception rolls for the purpose of determining surprise (if relevant).

5. On knowledge checks for general information, I would usually put them in spoilers with the necessary DCs. Just go ahead to roll, and I'll trust that you would resist reading them if the roll fails (or least not to metagame). (Don’t forget that you can make knowledge checks untrained for DC10.) There might be exceptions for plot-critical information though, where I would explicitly ask for knowledge checks. As for knowledge checks for monster lore, please state what kind of information you want in order of preference together with your rolls, and I'll reveal accordingly, e.g. DR, resistances, special attacks, etc. Otherwise, I would reveal what I think your character would be most interested in.

6. On skill checks where there could be team effort involved, e.g. finding a hidden trail with survival, influencing attitude of NPCs with diplomacy, please be explicit when making the rolls whether you are attempting the check on your own, or whether you are assisting. There might be situations where only one character is allowed to attempt the check (and the rest to assist) – I’ll state so explicitly if that’s the case.

7. On skill checks in general, if I feel you have role-played well, e.g. gave a good description of what your character does to search for a trail, came up with creative ways to befriend a hostile NPC, I would give bonuses, or even waive the DC altogether. :)

Roleplaying Matters
8. The maps and handouts (at the top of the page) would display all the maps, handouts, pictures, etc as the scenario progresses. The most current page would be right on top, while previous ones would be left there for your reference. (Incidentally, Android and IOS has the Google Slides app in case you work off mobile devices.)

9. Please have your full character information up on your character's profile page. Also, please have your stat block updated with the key information. Minimally please have your current hp vs max hp, AC (normal, touch and flat-footed) and saves. Feel free to include others.

10. Finally, I do enjoy roleplaying more than rollplaying. Whilst I've accepted that PFS games do skew towards the latter, I would strongly encourage posts to be more than simply dice rolls. :)

Getting Started
Ok with that out of the way, a few tasks before we kick off.

A. Go to the Gameplay page and dot.
B. Go to the maps and handouts page and fill out the table there. (Don’t worry about the 3 boxes below the table, i.e. token, initiative and perception. I’ll take care of that.)
C. In this Discussion thread, do your day job roll (if any), and share whatever OOC information you would like the rest of the party to know about your character e.g. class, level, special abilities. Also, please let me know if you have played this scenario before.
D. (optional) I’ve set up some brief opener at the Gameplay thread. Please feel free to roleplay your character’s introduction and interaction with each other before the game really kicks off.

Specifically for the purpose of the Wounded Wisp, please let me know if you have a wayfinder.

Oh yes, I did say I would only start on 12 Oct, but I can start earlier as soon as everyone’s character is ready. But no problem also to wait til 12 Oct.

Fantastic! Looking forward to getting this started!

Hello everyone!

Day Job, Craft:Painting: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

Katswiri is my first pathfinder society character. She is currently in her first mission as part of the first half of Gameday 5, so she won't be available to start until October 12. She is part of the Sky Key Solution, so has not played the Confirmation before, and does not have a wayfinder.

Katswiri is a level 1 Lore Oracle, Seer archetype. She specializes in Knowledge Skills and languages, although she only has Arcana, Dungeoneering, History and Nature for now. She is also fairly diplomatic. Her Natural Divination and Focused Trance revelations help her fill an int/cha based skill role, as she can more or less automatically pass 3 out of combat int based skill checks/day due to Focused Trance (+20 to a check after 1d6 rounds of meditation), and get a +10 bonus to one skill check/day from Natural Divination.

In combat, she is mediocre offensively (+1 to hit, 1d8+1 damage, no effective ranged attacks; I might get her a light crossbow after her current mission finishes, but she'll be terrible with it even if I do), but can buff the group with bless and heal with cure light wounds. She has a good armor class, but a bad CMD, thanks to her Sidestep Secret revelation.

Katswiri has the deaf curse, so she can not hear. Mechanically, that means she takes a -4 penalty to initiative checks (for a total of -6), automatically fails perception checks based on sound, takes a -4 penalty to opposed perception checks (so is currently at a -3 perception check to notice ambushes/hiding creatures and the like) and is immune to language-dependent spells such as suggestion or command and certain other sound based spells and abilities like the stun from Sound Burst (including beneficial effects, such as audible Bardic Performances). Her curse does give all her spells the Silent Spell metamagic for free without increasing cast time, so she does not suffer from the 20% spell failure chance for casting a spell with a verbal component.

The biggest downside to being deaf, however, is normal communication in combat and social environments. Katswiri has learned to read lips (FAQ here: http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety/faq#v5748eaic9os8), so in good lighting she can understand people within 10 feet of her who talk in a language she understands. In poor lighting conditions, further distances or if someone tries to avoid having their lips read, she has to make a perception check to understand them (DC set at discretion of the GM). She may ask for one of her companions to repeat anything said if we are ever in an audience situation where we're watching someone outside normal conversation distance.

I think that's most of the relevant crunchy information about Katswiri's abilities. From a fluff perspective, Katswiri is a Garundi woman who grew up alone in the Osiron desert after her parents died when she was young, who survived because of her oracle powers manifesting. She has a passion for learning of all kinds, and was recruited into the pathfinder society (specifically, the Scarab Sages faction) when her academic excellence was noticed while performing research into history and magic at one of Osiron's prominent universities.

I am looking forward to playing with everyone!

Hey, this is d'Eon. No Day Job currently, instead Talia will be busting slaves out for Liberty's Edge.
Free Slaves, DC 16 Disable Device: 10 + 10 = 20

And my daily rolls for my acrobat's pillar and surefoot training blocks
Acrobat's Pillar, DC 20 Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
+2 circumstance bonus to Acrobatics checks made to avoid attacks of opportunity. Lasts for 24 hours or until an Acrobatics check is failed.
Surefoot Blocks, DC 15 Acrobatics: 10 + 8 = 18
+2 circumstance bonus to Acrobatics checks made to balance on narrow or uneven surfaces and Climb checks. Lasts for 24 hours or until an Acrobatics or Climb check is failed.

Other than that, typical ninja right now. Haven't levelled into the weird stuff yet. Lots o' shuriken, heheh.

Oh yeah, I have run the scenario before, and Talia hasn't done the Confirmation and doesn't have a wayfinder yet.

Hi ho everybody.

Day Job, Perform:Comedy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

This is Kronas. He's a fun loving, friendly Gnome Satirist. He isn't terribly useful for dealing damage in combat (only armed with a whip +1 to hit, 1d2 non-lethal damage) but he will be making use of the 15' reach to make Aid-Other rolls when not performing or casting spells. His main focus will be on de-buffing or confusing the opposition to make it easier for the more combat orientated people to do their job.

This is the first time I've played as a complete support character, so there might be some teething problems to begin with. But I will try my best to be useful. Although both of the performance skills he is good at are verbal, so I don't think Katswiri will be able to benefit much from the effects of his Bardic Performance... sorry.

Never played PFS before, so no Wayfinder or Confirmation. I'm also not entirely sure if I'm allowed a job roll yet. Is the roll for the end of this scenario, or for the end of a previous one? Anyhoo, I'm looking forward to playing with y'all! Roll on Oct 12 :)

Xander Draft is a half orc paladin. He stands in the front with a great sword and cestus and attempts to smash those who oppose them.

Very standard melee paladin who now level 2 can lay on hands hit hard and isnt such an iron tank that he gets ignored. Xander has Darkvision out to 120 feet.

No Day Job, hasn't run confirmation, and no way-finder yet.

Welcome to all who have checked in thus far.

This scenario is not a very combat heavy one - more investigation, skill-based and roleplay.

@Kronas, yes, technically day jobs (or any other downtime activities) are done at the end of the scenario. In PbP though, we usually do that at the start just to get it out of the way. Not a major issue, other than that you don't actually have the money earned from the day job just yet.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Gunslinger 1 | HP 11/11 | AC 14 | Grit 3/3 | Cartridge 7/10 |

Lincoln is a level 1 Gunslinger. Sort of a smuggler cowboy type. He hails from the Alkenstar though he wasn't born there. When he was 14 he saw his parents taken by slave traders leaving him to fend for himself.

Lincoln traveled around making due with what he could find picking up knowledge and skills along the way. He ended up in Alkenstar and became fascinated with the engineering even though he wasn't exactly clever enough to really understand it. Realizing that he could learn a lot by overhearing the engineers as they got off work, Lincoln began tending bar near the Gunworks.

One evening at the bar he met a Gnome on his way to a small town called Mercy with a group of Pathfinders. Grimblwaldt (my other PFS character) told him a little about the group and showed him a nifty device called a Wayfinder. The tales he heard about the Pathfinders piqued his interest.

In the following weeks he began to hear of the deeds that Grim and his party accomplished and decided "Why not see what all of this Pathfinder stuff is all about?"

This will be his first mission. He has not done the Confirmation and does not have a Wayfinder though he has heard about both of them from his friend Grim.

Day Job, Profession Bartending: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

I have never played a gunslinger or any class like it so I too may have some teething issues, especially as this is my very first PbP.

Dear all, great to see the introductions, and really enjoying the roleplaying going on so far. Alas, I can't jump in yet with the NPCs...

Just a heads up. Although there are some, this scenario is not a very combat heavy one. Mostly falls under investigation and roleplaying so I think we have a good mix of characters here.

@Lincoln, I'm relatively unfamiliar with gunslingers, too, so we can learn together. :)

@Talia, greetings from Quinn. :)

I played a Gunslinger through level 20 in a home campaign, so I might be able to answer any questions. Guns are weirdly good against wizards I found, since mage armor and shield are completely bypassed. Monks were a pain to hit though, I got beat up a bunch by them.

Based on my understanding of your characters' combat roles, I'll place them in this order during combat if it's single file:
1. Xander
2. Talia
3. Lincoln
4. Katswiri
5. Kronas
6. Adnan

In double formation, it would 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. Let me know though if you would like something different.

I got my chronicle from the sky key solution, and applied the gold/purchases/etc to Katswiri. I also updated some of her documentation, with an inventory tracking sheet, faction card link and a few other things. I think the main mechanical changes are a +1 to knowledge history from a boon, and that she is using a masterwork agile breastplate now, so has a 21 ac and better armor check penalties.

Scarab Sages

Katswiri's action will depend to some extent on Talia's, so I'm going to hold off posting her action for now since Katswiri is further down in initiative anyway.

GM, how do you want to do the information for identifying the creature? Do you want to give me the pieces of useful information you think Katswiri would know, or do you want me to ask questions?

Oof, this is turning into a rough fight. Katswiri is going to try and keep people up as much as she can, but unless Xander goes down or doesn't trigger her readied action, it will be another round until she can heal Talia.

As much as we need the help, sleep has a 1 round cast time, which can be pretty easy to miss; I had a bard that used it as his primary offensive spell, which is why I remember (enlarge person and summon spells are the others I remember being 1 round cast time off the top of my head, and that gets missed a lot for enlarge person too). I'm not sure if you want to retcon that? Its too bad there is that pillar in the way between Adnan and the intersection where he could get Orange and Green in the burst though.

I have also been enjoying the game. Longer PbP campaigns can also be good (I'm in a giantslayer one right now), but it can sometimes be tough to keep one group going for an extended period. This is only my second PFS PBP, but I think one of the things I like about it best is how PFS is more eposodic, removing a lot of the possibility for a campaign to peter out an die.

Thanks, Katswiri. Have retconned. Not much changes actually. Your readied action to heal Xander is for round 1. You can do your round 2 action to heal Talia if that's what you wish, whether or not Xander triggers your healing. (Remember also that Xander as a paladin can lay on hands on himself as a swift action. Orc ferocity matches well.)

On PbP, there are definitely way more scenarios that are offered than modules or even adventure paths. One factor I guess is with the nature of PbP, that the chance of someone dropping off suddenly along the way (even for legitimate reasons), increases the longer the campaign goes. With short scenarios, that can be easily fixed, mostly by just moving on. (PFS has specific guidelines for when peopple drop out.) I can only think of constantly monitoring the recruitment threads to find one eventually.

Scarab Sages

When a readied action triggers, it shifts your initiative to just before the thing that triggered the action, so I would normally move up in initiative order to the group with Xander, but wouldn't get my normal action this round. I believe this is supposed to stop someone from being able to take two standard actions in between an opponent being able to respond with a turn.

If Xander rolls well enough to get over 0 with his lay on hands, he could choose not to trigger Katswiri's readied action though. In that case she would come out and heal Talia this turn. Half-Orc ferocity only lasts one round though, so I think we need to get him over 0 hp this round one way or another.

Woops, didn't realise that Xander might collapse at the end of the turn (and readied actions always confuse me), but would it be so bad if he did? With the people around him also temporarily incapacitated if, instead of mocking Blue, Kronas moved next to Xander he could pour the potion of Cure Moderate Wounds down his throat next turn if things wen sour and he would be fine right? Leaving Katswiri free to heal Talia.

We can go that route, potentially. If Xander steps towards Katswiri and receives healing, Kronas could also move up to Talia and give her the potion to drink with her delayed action, right?

That might work. My knowledge of the rules is taking a bit of a beating right now and I thought Talia was too far away :)

So if Kronas ran up to Talia with potion in hand, would it be a move action for her to take the potion off Kronas and the standard to drink?

Doh! Thanks, Katswiri for reminding me. Sigh, another relic of the different rule system between 5th Ed and Pathfinder.

Yes, Kronas, it would be a move action for her to retrieve the object from you, then standard to drink.

Thanks Kuey!

I just realised though, if Talia is at 0 hitpoints she can only do a move or a standard action in her round, leaving her a bit vulnerable. Hehe, can you tell this is my first time as a full support character :)

To cover all bases would I be able to retcon the previous post to have Kronas run up inbetween Talia and Lincoln instead of the actions in the spoilers?

Yes, go ahead.

That said three of them finished so hopefully I wont feel like its a mountain to reply to ever post in all the games (need to just stick with either one or two next time)

Ok guys, that's the end of the scenario! Thanks for a great game. We made it in time for Gameday V. So time for boons! In view of the deadline of reporting, I'll roll for everyone. A 16 or 20 will win the person a boon!

boon, Xander: 1d20 ⇒ 18
boon, Katswiri: 1d20 ⇒ 17
boon, Talia: 1d20 ⇒ 9
boon, Kronas: 1d20 ⇒ 4
boon, Lincoln: 1d20 ⇒ 4
boon, Adnan: 1d20 ⇒ 4
boon, GM: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Uh, oops...

Please find your chronicles here. There will also be a link at the top of the page. Katswiri, Kronas, since these are your first PFS characters, have also prepared a Welcome to Pathfinder boon.

Let me know if there are any problems with the chronicles. Once again, thanks for a great game!

edit: Please note that as I'm reporting via Gameday V rather than direct the Paizo, the scenario might take a while to appear on your account. Those I reported last week took almost a week to register.
