Year of Boundless Wonder

You have been stationed at the Grand Lodge in Absalom, awaiting assignment for a mission of utmost importance. Things finally seemed in motion when Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng sent out a summons for available agents through the kitsune agent. Specialized in the history of Absalom, Dreng is known for putting off-duty agents to work on sundry tasks when he finds them resting within the city’s limits.

Coming to the meeting place — an odd choice of venue, as it is a street corner far from the Grand Lodge, the six of you wait miserably in the constant dreary drizzle. The area sees little human traffic, even more so with the incessant rain.

Wearing red and purple robes along with studded leather and a light shield, you see a gnome brandishing the holy symbol of Asmodeus and spell component pouch. He has white hair and blue eyes.

In a formal tone, he says, "Everyone... well met, although this is a horrible place to conduct a meeting of business. Meeting in the rain could decrease our understanding of the mission, and I expected better from the Pathfinder Society. I do, however, approve of the discrete location. At least that part has been successfully chosen."

"Anyway, my name is Capone, and I am a keeper of knowledge by helping in the Dark Archive. I help sort books, tag the artifacts, and catalog them. It may seem like a boring job, but being able to reference materials is an important for expedient acquisition of the knowledge you need. Any job that has a purpose is one worth keeping around. I am a follower of Asmodeus, and he supplies me with my magical capabilities. This will be my first mission outside of those archives." He extends his arm (probably upwards) in a sharp fashion to shake hands with anyone willing to do so.

A halfling steps forward out of the shadows.

"Well met everyone. I love the rain, people pay less attention. They seem to focus more on staying dry than their surroundings. I am Adinomo."

He turns to the gnome "I do hope that you do not endorse the slavery that Cheliax enforces on my brothers and sisters..."

Standing in the middle of the street in the rain is an apparently homeless woman in a gaudy, threadbare outfit the color of autumn leaves. Her eyes don't seem to focus on anything. They are as glassy as damp marbles.

The rain patters upon her hammering her shapeless, leafy-looking hat down around her ears. Patter, patter, patter....

Capone chooses his words carefully but makes sure he is clear. "Adinomo, I believe that legal enactment of the law is, by its own right, correct for the area in which it is drawn. If you have brothers and sisters in slavery, that is unfortunate and you have my condolences, but it is the way of the law in that area assuming that it is so. Having said that, I have no affiliation with Cheliax personally. I am a member of the Dark Archives for archiving and collecting alone, not for slavery or ties to Cheliax. I am a librarian, not a slave master."

"However, I will state that oftentimes slavery in enacted above and below the law. In such cases, I cannot condone such behavior. That unfortunately happens more often that it should."

He looks up at the sky, shielding his eyes from the rain, then looks at the woman who has appeared. "I think that is an appropriate course of action to take for this likely inebriated person."

Year of Boundless Wonder

It's not quite 12 Oct yet, but I don't think any of your characters are tied down with Sky Key so let's get this started! Shelby, I trust you survived the game on Sunday? :) By the way, if you've not done so, please fill in the table at the maps and handout link.

After standing in the dreary rain for close to an hour, and feeling quite miserable (for most of you at least), you see a lone beggar garbed in baggy robes approaching. The only figure visible in the constant drizzle, the beggar sticks out his hands for currency.

“Have you any coin to spare, fine folk?”

The question hangs in the air for only a scant moment before the figure pulls back his hood to reveal the wizened face of Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng. He gives a crooked smile, soaked head to toe from his unprotected time in the rain. His clothes smell faintly of cabbage.

“Sorry about that,” he says with a wink. “I always like to play a little joke on agents when I stumble across them during my jaunts into town. Now, why did I summon you fine folk here again…?” Dreng shakes his head from side to side, as though trying to knock water out of his ears, despite the constant downpour.

“Ah yes, the Wounded Wisp! I’m undercover now and can’t stray far from the site I’m watching, but I need someone to retrieve a package for me from that fine establishment. It’s among Absalom’s most storied taverns, you see, and one that holds a special place of privilege in the Society’s lore as the place where the organization began. Well, I could drone on and on about it, but standing out in the rain is doing none of us any favors.” As if anticipating agreement, the bedraggled venture captain produces a small slip of folded paper from one of his many stitched pockets. Dreng quickly shows a glimpse of the page’s contents: a map detailing the location of the Wounded Wisp bar.

“The bartender is a woman by the name of Heryn Gale, a fine lady who came to own the Wisp after the passing of her father from — oh, bah, it’s really getting too cold for me to give a proper history lesson! If you could just go to the Wisp, and tell Heryn you’re there to pick up my parcel, it would be most appreciated. I’ll be around here for several more hours at least.”

At this point, Dreng notices Faeria and appears briefly taken aback. He reaches out to pat her on her shoulder, muttering, "There, there. Looks like you've decided to join in today." Turning to the rest of the party, he says in an encouraging tone, "Taking good care of her, I see? Good going. Keep it up."

History DC 10:

The Wounded Wisp was a bar once frequented by the original members of the Pathfinder Society before the Society was even formed. Inside the Wisp, acquaintances would share stories about their adventurous exploits with one another.

History DC 15:

Many volumes of the Pathfinder Chronicles came together under the Wisp’s roof. Famous Pathfinders like Eando Kline and the Seeker Osprey often stopped by for a drink while they relaxed in Absalom between assignments. Though not officially affiliated with the Society, the bar maintains good relations with Pathfinders, offering discounts and prompt service. The owners have always kept themselves and the Wisp afloat through the generosity of Society agents who spend coin at the establishment.

History DC 20:

Selmius Foster was one of the founding members of the Pathfinder Society, known to have frequented the Wisp often and occasionally taken up residence in a spare room between his travels. His celebrated exploits first appeared in Volume 1 of the Pathfinder Chronicles.

History DC 25:

Following the death of Selmius Foster on the island of Bhopan, his assistant Adolphus made several donations to maintain one of his mentor’s favorite sites. The exact arrangement between Adolphus and the owners of the Wisp was never disclosed, but it is said that some of this gold came from the same fortune that Adolphus used to found the Pathfinder lodge in Quantium.

Please make history checks for the above to uncover them. Remember you can make knowledge checks untrained for DC10, but not higher. Please note that the current year is 4716. Go ahead and to ask Dreng questions if you have any. And you can refer to the maps and handout page for a map of Absalom, and a picture of the beloved Venture Captain Dreng.

With Faeria leading the way (at least those times that she is not heading down side alleys seeing tracks of Barnabus), the party proceeds on to the Wounded Wisp. All of you have heard of the building at some point, even in your early career as a Pathfinder. It is located in the Foreign Quarter district of Absalom, close to the grounds of the Grand Lodge, and you have no difficulty finding the establishment with the map Dreng provided.

Built from dark, discolored wood, the exterior of the Wounded Wisp is the image of an iconic dive bar. Stained and barred windows obscure direct vision into the establishment, though ruddy yellow light bleeds from a window in the front hall, which appears warmly welcoming for those standing outside in the freezing rain. The only distinguishing feature on the Wisp’s exterior is a thick wooden sign hanging from above the bar’s entrance. A brass ring fitted onto the sign anchors a lantern — referred to by the staff as “the wisp” — that hangs there during the evening hours, though it is obviously unlit now.

Refer to maps and handouts for the layout of the place and some of its inhabitants currently.

You enter via a long wooden hallway, heading north into the building itself. The walls are covered in numerous decorations and trophies left by successful Pathfinders who’ve donated minor paraphernalia to the bar. Immediately in front of you is a large closet contains various coat racks and shelves for patrons to place any equipment they don’t want to lug with them. A pimply teenage boy works here, stunned into confused silence by a woman asking about a lost fish. It takes him sometime to gather his wits and you manage to stow any gear you do not wish to lug around while in the tavern.

The smell of smoke and spilled ale assails the senses as you enter the main hall. Walls of dark-stained wood make up the sides of the Wounded Wisp, while well-used wooden tables are spread throughout the space. A raised area in the back of the establishment houses several additional tables and eating areas for groups seeking more than just a good drink. An austere bar supported by kegs instead of wooden panels commands the northern end of the room. A stained-glass cabinet stands behind the bar, its dark panes cracked in several spots, yet not so opaque as to conceal the several dozen types of hard liquor within. The noon-meal crowd has obviously started to gather, and you hear various snippets of conversations in the air.

"Have you heard? This Sir Reinhart of Kenabres, a Mendevian crusader who just arrived from the north, plans on attempting the Test of the Starstone today! Looks like the Shrine would need another alcove soon! Bwahahaha!"

"Have I told you the tale of the fabled Yasmin bint Faroud, favoured of the Ten? She sacrificed her life distracting Zythrustianax, draconic scourge of the Society, so dozens of junior agents could survive. Her act of benevolence is the epitome of cooperation within the Society."

Darven, Adinomo:
You find the latter voice with its high pitch distinctively familiar. And in fact, you've seemed to have heard the story before.

You see a middle-aged woman standing behind the bar, slightly frazzled, but with a commanding presence nonetheless. She coordinates her various wait staff as a conductor manages an orchestra, whilst preparing the drinks for the customers. She spots your group entering and firmly exclaims, "Welcome, travellers to the Wounded Wisp. You have the look of new Pathfinders, I see. Come, come, take a seat and rest your feet! First round on the house for new initiates!"

Just then, a female halfling who had been regaling a group of young adventurers with tales of past Pathfinders dashes forward and waves at Darven and Adinomo. "Hi, Darven! Hi, Adinomo! How have you been since we returned from the caves?" Darven and Adinomo immediately recognise her as Janira Garvix, their mentor who led them on their Confirmation. She leaves behind a table of what appears to be new Pathfinder initiates, listening intently to her stories.

As you look around, most of the patrons glances briefly your way, but shortly return to their business. A pair of half-orcs, male and female, sitting at the back of the main hall catch your attention, only because their boisterous laughter overwhelms everything else in the tavern. They appear to be playing the traditional half-orc game of drinking each other under the table, and it looks like they have only just started.

A bespectacled man with thinning hair dressed in scholarly robes is sitting at the corner on the raised platform studying a large tome opened in front of him. He looks up to take a break, and glances curiously at your party, especially at the wandering Faeria, before returning to his book.

A middle-aged Keleshite man in blue robes and head wrappings sits near the bar, drinking by himself. A holy symbol of the goddess Sarenrae hangs about his neck. He clearly spots Capone's symbol of Asmodeus hanging about his, and frowns thoughtfully. He pauses briefly, then gestures towards the empty seats about him. "I see you're a holy servant of the gods yourself. A new Pathfinder? You're welcomed to join me. You and your companions, if they so desire. If you don't mind entertaining an aging Pathfinder past his prime. Our gods may be adversaries but that doesn't mean we have to be. Let us speak of gods and their teachings, Pathfinders and their history, and dangers we face on the road."

Feel free to mingle with the bar patrons.

Capone mingles with the priest, first skeptical upon view of the holy symbol but then more at ease once the priest actually speaks. Capone speaks in precise and staccato sentences, but stays rather friendly within his own (uptight) worldview.

"A devoted life is a life with purpose, so I can appreciate the willingness to apply yourself to that which you believe in."

"People call me Capone. If you have any knowledge, be it parable, anecdotal, or scholarly, I would be interested in hearing your recounts. I can share with you what I have as well, although I have very little experience outside of my librarian career within the Dark Archives."

I am always willing to learn from someone. Can never learn enough.

Adinomo hugs the halfling woman "You have no idea what they made me do! I had to listen to an opera performance in Oppara! I was almost glad when the zombies attacked! It turned out there was this whole cult, but I won't bore you with that. What have you been up to?"

Green willow stares at all the interaction around her. She appears in a very frightened state, almost as if being in the city makes her uncomfortable. She stays in the back hoping that nobody will not her.

Janira hugs Adinomo tightly in return, and laughs joyously in her melodious voice. "An opera in Oppara! Oh I could make a story out of that! Or maybe a song! Oh, I've been good. Think I've mostly recovered from the encounter with the minotaur, though my sides still ache when the weather turns chilly! Well, I've been educating some of the Pathfinders initiates on the famed deeds of their predecessors. Definitely more peaceful that fighting minotaurs, that for sure! Oh, but like Myrcellon Plonti showed us when he faced down the rampaging tyranosaur alone, we only grow in adversities."

Janira stops and listens to the story of the Ekujae elves, and smiles at Shelby when he eventually approaches. "That was wonderful! I've never met the Ekujae elves before. Have you?" Turning to Darven and Adinomo, she asks, "Is he your friend? Introduce us!"

The Keleshite nods as he listens intently. "I am pleased to meet one keen on learning. A Pathfinder may be an explorer, but first and foremost, he is a scholar. Action is important, but must be balanced with knowledge. I am Aram bin Kaleel, a humble servant of Sarenrae, but you can already see that. In my spare time, I run a little store in the Coins district. Nothing fanciful - just knick knacks and curios. If I may ask, however, how does a librarian take up the worship of the infernal lord?"

"My dearie," the bartender calls out. "You are shaking like a leaf! Not used to the city, eh? I've seen in with many Pathfinders, first time in a big city. Nothing to worry about. Come, come, take a seat." At this time, she pours a generous cup of white wine and places it in front of Greenwillow. "Here, drink up. It will settle your nerves."

"I believe in the natural order of things. The strong shall govern the weak, and that things should have a purpose in life. It has little to do with being a librarian, although the filing of knowledge is a very distinct and important task, so it fits into my worldview."

"Of course, I could ask the same of you. How does a merchant become a servant of the Dawnflower and not the God of the First Vault?" Capone is trying to illustrate a point.
