Genryl's smile falters slightly at the sylph's words. "I don't know if we can 'Duel' with Harrow cards. And anyways," with this his smile drops completely and a granite-like serious expression takes its place. "I wouldn't risk bringing my family's deck in here with out a promise from the spirit here as well as any other spirit that nothing would happen to it. Year of Boundless Wonder

Oh man, I so want to make some IC jokes about MTG but scenario says he stays silent. Sigh...
Yu, I've moved you up to the table since he want to do the reading.
And doh, I made a typo in the previous post that gave the thing completely away! If you missed it, great! If you caught it, thanks for playing along!

The figure ignores all questions from you or the banter between Genryl and Sira, simply staring at each of you, waiting for someone to approach to receive the reading.

Thorur stares suspiciously at the hooded figure, but perhaps it is too alien, and he is completely uncertain what hidden intentions, if any, it has. He inches forward while the creature stares expressionless at him approaching, its mouth tentacles waving vaguely in the air. Once Thorur reaches the mummified corpse, he is unable to determine any external causes for his death. However, the face is locked into a silent scream, and you start entertaining the horrifying thought that he might have died from fear alone.

The figure immediately swivels its head to stare at Caena but doesn't do anything when she activates her divine ability to sense evil. Despite its appearances, however, Caena does not detect evil emanating from it.
Just fyi, I've always taken the approach that all SU and SLA have obvious effects, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

While Lucifer circles around the room suspiciously, Yu and Genryl approach the table, eager for the reading, and the creature obliges.

(see maps and handouts to follow along the harrow reading)

When you approach the table, the figure silently begins the reading. It places nine cards onto the table in a square, glances up you briefly, and flips open the left column. ”The first column denotes the past. Ah, the Queen Mother, the Publican and the Eclipse. The Eclipse is strong in the past. This card represents loss of purpose. I see a curious creature that fell from its original
path. Now it wanders blindly, far afield under shadows of the mind.”

”And now for the present,” it intones as it flips open the middle column.”The Owl, the Lost, and the Midwife. Ahhhh, The Midwife. She is a conduit of creation, but she does not create alone. I see a creature in the present that also creates many things. It dreams of strange places and uses its mind to make these places real. But The Midwife is misaligned. The world will not like what this creature makes.”

It finally turns to the last column, and flips the cards open one at a time. ”And finally, for your future. The Winged Serpent, the Carnival, and the Mute Hag. The Carnival is a card of illusions and false dreams. Danger lies in your future, but it is not the danger you expect. The Carnival is the most important card for you because it is a card for fools. It was foolish to come here…”

With that, the creature suddenly disappears with a suddenly explosion of light from the candles. The six skulls which had been resting peacefully on the table suddenly rises into the air and attacks you! Two of them (red and orange) are different from the rest - they burst into flames!

knowledge(religion) DC10 to identify creature:
Both types of the floating skulls are known as beheaded, and are tiny-sized undeads. However, they seem controlled by some external forces, and through that connection, they might be susceptible to mind-affecting effects, unlike typical undeads.
For every 5 you beat the DC, you may ask for additional information about the creatures. Or you can just leave it to me to share what I feel you are most likely to know.

Genryl gives a snort as the last cards are flipped over. "I call foul! There is almost no chance of all nine wisdom cards coming up in a reading like this. Either you've stacked the deck, not bothered to shuffle properly... Or we are in deep trouble."

As the creature disappears and the Skulls start to fly off the table, Genryl crys, "Charlatan!" before digging a wooden symbol dipicting grapes in a jug out from under his beard. Taking a step back he calls out for Halcamora. "Oh, mighty Halcamora, please bless these misguided spirits with your bountiful harvests!" Caena doesn't detect any evil aura from the creature, but that could mean a number of different things. She considers this while the harrow reading is going on, and passing completely over her head. I hope Genryl is getting something from this. Wasn't it his specialty?

She cues in near the end when it starts talking about danger and being a fool to come here - words that sounds awfully threat-like. Sure enough, it poofs away and suddenly some violent-looking skulls spring into action.

Lol, Genryl! The dangers of cutting and pasting. Fixed below.

Genryl knows there are no special defences beyond regular undeads. Caena recalls that the flaming ones are hardier, and when they hit, they cause additional fire damage and can cause the victim to catch fire.

Genryl releases a wave of divine energy at the undeads, causing all of the flying skulls to start cracking apart.

While Yu starts inspiring his allies with some well-placed jokes, Lucifer follows immediately after with a slingstone, smashing one of the flaming skulls (red) into pieces. Caena steps forward and slices at the remaining burning skull, but her aim is off and her blade slams into the table instead.

Sira, if not targeting a specific creature, you must target a grid intersection, not a space. I'll take it you were aiming for the one nearest yellow skull. Separately, as you are targeting a space rather than a creature, you do not suffer the -4 penalty for attacking a creature in melee. However, the space would get cover bonus due to the allies in the way, but that is an adjustment to AC done by the GM.
Not that it matters in this case... :)

With that beard covering your whole face, how can anyone tell you dwarves apart? ;)
Yu Khan, while activating bardic performance is a standard action, maintaining it from round to round after that is a free action, so you actually had your standard action. Also, you don't need to make performance checks to inspire courage. Love the jokes, though. :)
Sira, yes, tiny creatures have 0 reach so need to be in your school to attack.

Thorur, not expecting friendly fire, takes the full brunt of the fiery explosion. Startled by this, he fails to smack the flying skull as it approaches him, and in his return stroke, similarly misses the other skull. Caena also finds difficulty in slicing the flaming skull as it approaches with her, but stays nimble enough to quickly put out the fire on her tabard. She reorientates herself to the skull flying right in front her and slices it in twain, putting out its fire for good.

Lucifer approaches the area where the tentacled humanoid was but it is either extremely well-hidden, or it is no longer present, and he is unable to find any signs of the humanoid. While Yu Khan continues to boost his allies' morale with some joviality, Genryl releases a wave of divine red energy, smiting the remaining undeads. One by one, as they get hits by the wave, they burst into pieces!
Even if they made their saving throw, damage would have destroyed them!

Combat over!

After destroying the last skull, you are able to look at the room carefully. After carefully examining the room, you find no traces of the tentacled creature, not even any footsteps in the dust covered floor, and you conclude that the creature was an illusion. The candles had similarly disappeared together with the creature earlier, and so has the harrow deck that it was using.

However, on the reading table lies a real set of harrow cards, presumably left behind by Lady Illirigarde, still faintly glowing with with psychic power.

Whoever draws a card:

Yu doesn't fight unless directly attacked, or he runs out of Bardic Performances. I roll to see how "good" my jokes are.... Had I rolled any lower the jokes would have gone total 'dad joke' level..... It gives me something else to do. Its a role play choice.

Genryl shakes his head, which with the beard and long hair involves massive movements, when the group reaches the realization the creature and its Harrow deck were just illusions. "Not only a charlatan but a fake charlatan using a fake deck! Hrump, whoever set that illusion up has maligned Harrow users everywhere and the cards themselves. That is unacceptable!" He moves up to the table and let's people draw cards if the want to before picking up the deck. He tests his future, drawing a card and gives a chuckle over it. He puts it back in the deck before wrapping it up in a cloth and putting it in his bag. "I don't know if Lady Illidarse has any surviving relatives, but we should give them the deck. After all of the mystery surrounding this place it's probably brimming with potential."

Genryl proceeds to clean up the reading area,. Once he finishes tidying it up he faces the rest of the group. " Shall we get moving? We might want to the villagers we cleared out the 'ghosts' haunting this place."

Caena sighs with relief when Genryl releases a burst of divine energy that takes care of all the remaining skulls. She ignores the harrow deck on the table while they search the room, but is surprised when Genryl seems ready to leave.

"Aren't you being a bit hasty? If that was an illusion, someone was making it appear. We may have taken care of one problem, but I don't think we're done here until we've finished looking around. Dr. Quolorum did ask us to investigate the building."

Sovereign Court

Year of Boundless Wonder

As Sira draws the first card, he feels a burst of energy that travels up his arm into his head, and suddenly, he feels a wave of clarity sweeping through his mind. Yu and Genryl follow shortly after, and they both feel the same psychic energy, but in their case, it travels through all their synapses and they bodies feel more more in control, more agile. Clearly, Lady Illirigarde's harrow decks are more than just a simple deck of cards.

Once during each subsequent quest, you may draw a card at random as a standard action, and you gain a +2 enhancement bonus to the ability score that matches the suit of the card drawn until the end of the quest. Roll 1d6 to determine the suit (1 is Strength, 2 is Dexterity, 3 is Constitution, 4 is Intelligence, 5 is Wisdom, and 6 is Charisma). So, don't forget to do this at the start of each subsequent quest. I'm not going to remind you! :) And do me a favour and indicate in your statline the current bonus you have.

The brave Pathfinders, their morale boosted after that undead encounter, proceed boldly but carefully to explore the remaining rooms. However, after than being rather quite rundown after all these years, there other rooms contain nothing special off note. However, along the hallway that leads to the back entrance lies the skeleton of a human man. You find cracks on its skull and bones, and he has clearly died from a number of bludgeoning blows. Its bony hand still clutches a single card you recognise is from a harrow deck, the card titled the Demon’s Lantern. (see maps and handouts) In addition, you find it still garbed in leather armor, wielding a masterwork rapier, with 2 vials of holy water in one of its pouches. Here likely lies Wulfer, the adventurer that had braved this tavern alone a few years ago. It seemed that he encountered the same beheaded skulls as you, but unlike you, had succumbed to their attacks.

Please split up the loot.

With noting further of note, you leave the tavern, confident that you have finally exorcised the ghosts, if any, that had been present there. However, no matter how hard you knock, none of the villagers are willing to open their doors or windows to you. In fact, from one of the houses, a horseshoe is launched in your direction and you decide to beat a hasty retreat before more come flying your way.

You return to Rozenport and send note of your discovery to Dr. Quolorum. A few hours later, he returns with a letter, congratulating you on your sucess. He shares that Lady Illirigarde had no kin to pass the harrow deck onto and reports great eagerness to study the deck’s strange powers, but he advises you to hold onto it until the mystery of the phantom phenomena is solved in case it proves useful.

Congratulations! You've completed the first chapter. If it feels short, yes each quest is short and standalone. Go ahead and rest up and I'll launch chapter 2 in approximately 8 hours.

On quests like this, I believe the time between individual quests is technically the same as the time between adventures or an undefined amount of time as long or as short as you need, so don't worry about healing.

As he gets a rush from the deck, Genryl chuckles. "Haha, I thought this was going to be a powerful deck, and by golly it is. Now if only I could achieve this with my own deck... I'll have to try it a few more times."

After examining the rest of the building, which I had thought we'd done earlier... Oops Genryl heads back outside to the nice open area as well as the bare earth. He quickly scurried to pick his own deck up from under the rock where he'd left it before stretching and commenting, "Well, should we go inform the locals?"

Highly disappointed by the things people's responses to their mighty deeds, Genryl heads back with the group to Rozenport. That night he pulls a bottle of wine out of his pack, gleefully offering to share with everyone. He proves great company for a while before he seems to sober up a bit, saying "Dang it's that time, you'll have to excuse me. I need to commune with my goddess," and tries to stand up. He trotters a few feet away before producing another wine bottle and preceeding to spend an hour alone in meditation. Afterwards he joins back up with the group. After drinking his fill, he gets a good rest.

The next chance he gets he pulls a card from the deck.

Yes, Genryl is right. For roleplaying purposes, I'm taking the quests one day after another, but in reality, there are treated as separate standalone adventures, so you recover all hp and class abilities in between.

Chapter 2 - Lightning

Next morning, you receive yet another note from Dr. Quolorum. (see Lightning handout at maps and handouts) You spend the rest of the day getting a well-deserved rest after the harrowing trip to Dunhob the previous day, and set off to meet the professor once the sun has set.

Tonight the sky is clear, and the stars are out, which helps provide ample light to view the blackened hilltop that Dr. Quolorum marked on his map. A scorched crater sits at the summit of the hill surrounded by a ring of tortured earth. Agonized faces and grasping hands are formed in the dirt around the crater, as if the ground itself were once alive and in great pain. Stunted shrubs covered with red thorns are scattered across the hill.

Oblivious to this unusual scene, you see a gnome, presumably Dr. Quolorum, wandering about the hilltop humming merrily and checking his instruments. Finally meeting the elusive researcher for the first time, you find him rather unusual looking for gnome, for he has plain black hair and brown eyes. He nonetheless has the ever darting curious eyes and hyperactivity of gnomes. When he notices you he calls out. “Hello! Good to see you’ve arrived. Make yourselves comfortable because the next strike shouldn’t occur for a while yet. In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions.”

You may also examine the hilltop, hopefully before the lightning strikes. If you do, give me survival, knowledge(religion), and/or sense motive checks. In this case, you can attempt any or all three skills (if you're trained for knowledge, that is).
