Year of Boundless Wonder

Janira glances back as she races towards the minotaur. She waves Kronas towards the cave. "Kronas, go! I can lure him away much easier by myself then with the whole group together with me."

Vincenza's eyes widen in fright at the sight of the minotaur. Janira's bag goes sailing past her into the hole, and Vincenza moves to follow it until she notices Kronas taking a stand. "Kronas, are you mad?! We need to go, Janira can handle this!" Hearing Janira agree with her, she tugs on Kronas's arm to persuade him to follow her into the cave.

Katswiri gasps as the Minotaur crashes through the underbrush towards the group. She is slow to react and has difficulty following everything in the confusion, but manages to get the gist of the plan and scrambles as quickly as she can towards the cave as Janira leads the beast away.

Jedah whirls at the heavy oncoming footsteps and makes to dive behind cover when the Minotaur breaks into the clearing. Hearing Janira's plea he looks to the rest of the group for guidance, feeling alarmed as Kronas steps forth to tackle the beast. Breathing a deep sigh of relief as the others, mostly, had obviously come to their senses.

The Kineticist waves to Janira to wish her luck and then turns to Ukou, who was stupidly trying to tackle the beast alone.

"Hate to break it to ya, but we are all Pathfinders. I've got a feeling you will only get Janira killed by being so dense. A minotaur is a little out our league mate so come on!"

His part said, Jedah darts into the cave with the others, hoping Link was going to join them.

Year of Boundless Wonder

The minotaur roars in frustration as he sees most of his quarries escaping into the tunnels, which with its small entrance, he would have a difficult time squeezing through to follow. He is delighted, however, to see the half-orc standing his ground, but when Ukou pulls out his battleaxe and stares him down, the minotaur pauses briefly as if uncertain. Janira herself stops, dangerously close to the minotaur. She screams at Ukou in concern, ""Go, Ukou!"

Ukou, you actually succeeded in shaking the minotaur. :)

The minotaur turns to Janira on hearing her scream. Seeing an easier prey, he turns to charge at her instead. Janira's shrill voice rings out in an unfamiliar language, taunting the minotaur, while she peppers it with crossbow bolts.

Giant:
"Hey, I think I saw your mom getting milked back in Absalom!"

She then turns tail and runs into the undergrowth, much faster than what her short legs would be able to do. The minotaur roars in anger, and chases after the halfling. They quickly disappear into the thick undergrowth, and soon the crashing noises fade away, too.

spellcraft DC16:
She cast Expeditious Retreat in the previous post.

Soon, the usual chirping of birds return. At your feet lay the backpack that Janira had thrown in before you. When you search through it, you find quite a number of very useful items. You spend some time sorting through the items, before examining the cave, slowly making your way deeper. Deeper into the caves, it appears rather dim.(Please refer to the list here. Decide who is carrying what, as it might matter during combat later. There will also be a link at the top of the page. Also, determine the lighting - i.e. who is carrying what light source if any.)

Katswiri finishes her mad dash to the cave, then peeks out as the rest of the events unfold and Janira makes good on her escape. She withdraws back into the cave with her companions, hand reaching up to gesture and touch the rim of her hat as she does, a soft glow radiating from it to light the nearby area.

"Is everyone alright? That was very brave Ukou, but very dangerous. A minotaur here is most unexpected, and not a fight we would want to take without favorable conditions. I recognized the spell Janira cast, however. With its help, she should be able to outpace the beast with ease, but it could be some time before she is able to safely rejoin us. Shall we see what she left for us to use before we press onwards?"

Katswiri helps sift through the materials, detecting magic on the bag and looking through the various scrolls, potions and alchemical items. She selects one of the scrolls and scans through it, nodding to herself. "I recognize a number of these scrolls, but this is the only one I believe I can use. I can follow the symbology sufficiently well to cast it, I think." She rolls the scroll up and tucks it into her backpack. "It is a scroll to summon a small cloud of dense fog, to block vision from afar. It could come in quite handy if we must run from archers or other ranged foes." Katswiri finishes looking through the materials, her hand lingering on one of the two wands. "I can use this wand of healing, but I have several means of healing at my disposal already. Can anyone else use it? If so, please take it."

She finishes by pointing at the thunderstone. "I have awful aim, so do not wish to carry it. But for whoever takes the Thunderstone, know that you can safely include me in its blast. I've been caught in one or two at my time at university, and they mostly tickle."

I am assuming the various items are labeled so we don't have to ID them? Katswiri will still need to Decipher the scroll since she doesn't have read magic if she would like to use it.

Still concerned about his short-legged friend running from a giant I hope that spell lasts! Kronas tries to lighten his mood with a joke "Hmm, I've never tried throwing a Thunderstone before... But I must have a good aim because I'm excellent at throwing tantrums!" though his heart isn't in it.

Seeing Katswiri light up the cave, he decides to do the same. With a theatrical wave of his hand and the magic word "SPARKLES!" four small orbs of light start floating around the party. He then joins in sifting through the pack and, looking at all the gibberish written on the scrolls, concludes that he is unable to use most of the items. After taking the items, she opens her backpack and roots around for her own sunrod. She finds it and whacks it on the wall of the cave to turn it on. Placing the new items in her bag, she secures it and stands up. "There, I think that's enough light to be going on for now."

"Well, I wouldn't mind the one that makes you disappear! That could be all kinds of handy I suppose and the one that makes tricky rocks feel like the smoothest stones would be good! But I am happy to take anything.

I have a good eye and am adept at throwing between whirling combatants but I am more than happy to stick with my own fire!"

Looking around the cave, Jedah leans against the wall and sighs deeply, glad the Minotaur is behind them and confident in Janira's skills, else why would the Master of scrolls put her in charge here? At least, he hoped Shaine knew what he was doing.

"I don't think we should wait, our Confirmation here awaits and our job is to explore here and report our findings."

Year of Boundless Wonder

Please continue to sort out the items, and update the google sheet link at the top of the page. Unclaimed items would be assumed left in the backpack. Who's going to carry that?

The tunnel that you are in varies from 3 to 10 feet width and height at different places, although it is usually a comfortable 7 feet wide and high. The caves are rather damp, as water is constantly dripping from stalactites. The air is humid and you can hear the distant rushing of underground streams, and a thin stream of water seems to be flowing down the tunnel you in. As a result, the ground and walls are slippery. DC of all Acrobatics checks increased by 2.

Beyond the radius of the light from Vincenza's sunrod, Jedah's violet flame and Kronas' floating will o' wisps, you find that the cave walls are patterned with blue-green luminescent fungi that provide dim light.

What is more interesting are the petroglyphs — most depicting marine animals or spiral shapes — that periodically decorate the tunnels’ walls. They become increasingly frequent as you progress deeper. The rough surface of the carvings provides a natural platform for the fungi, causing it to grow thicker and making the carvings glow slightly brighter than their surroundings, creating an eerie yet solemn effect.

knowledge(religion) DC20:
You deduce that these are carvings left behind by pilgrims over many year as marks to to commemorate their pilgrimages.

The narrow tunnel twists and turns for several hundred feet before slowly opening to a wider passage about 10 feet wide. A large hole spans across the entire tunnel's width and stretches ten feet down the path. At the bottom of the 20 feet deep pit lies a small bundle of cloth. The tunnel here is 10 feet tall with a ceiling mostly devoid of stalactites

Knowledge (dungeoneering) or Survival DC10:
The hole in the ground is artificial.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) or Survival DC15:
The pit is at least a year old.

Katswiri moves slowly down the damp, slick passage, carefully trying to keep her balance. The movement doesn't come naturally to her, and she has to try hard to keep from slipping and falling. As the group passes the fungus covered carvings, she reaches out and almost touches one of the shapes before thinking better of touching strange mold in a cave. "These shapes are fascinating. I wonder...did the gillmen carve these? Or some other, primitive culture? Hm..."

Katswiri takes her journal out of her backpack and flips to the first blank page, taking care to keep it dry as she paints representations of several of the more interesting looking carvings.

As the group reaches the pit, Katswiri moves up to the edge, peering down into the pit, crouching down to inspect the sides and glancing up at the ceiling. "I think someone built this. Look, the pit sides show tool marks from where it was dug away." Katswiri points out the signs of intelligent construction before standing, and cranes her neck to look down into the pit, seeing only some indistinct object at the bottom. "I think there is something down there. I can't possibly jump over this in any case. I could probably climb down with a rope, but I would need help getting up the other side. Katswiri will gesture, casting detect magic on the cloak. "Well, that does make sense. If the religious icons and this pit were created by the gilmen we're here to investigate, it seems likely the cloak came from one of them as well."

Jedah spends some time finding empty pockets for the potions, many of them filled with odd coloured balls and incense for his performances. Looking distractedly around the carvings on the wall, he too notes down what he can see, though he does this with coloured inks rather than plain charcoal. It would seem that the man could not bear anything plain.

Shaking his head suddenly as he realised others were talking to him he smiles and bows, taking a look at the pit with a careful eye.

"Sure I could leap that, no bother! Then I will try to find something to secure the rope to eh? And Ukou my man, she said to use them to assist us, so it isn't exactly looting and I am pretty sure we are not Goblins, so your point is pretty moot."

Waiting for the others to clear a space or to be down the pit, Jedah takes a run up before taking flare in somersaulting the pit, the flames in his hands creating an interesting spiral pattern as he does so.

As Kronas passes Ukou, he jumps suddenly and hops off to hide behind Katswiri, peeking out from behind her every now and then to keep an eye on the large half-man. Pretending that was just eager to take a look at the cloak he says "Oh it's soo prettyful! Can I see?" Cracking his knuckles, Kronas casts detect magic on the garment...

But is distracted by Jedah's impressive leap "Oooh!" he exclaims, clapping enthusiastically "You sir, have style!". Turning back to the cloak, he says "Well, there's more than one way to see what magic it holds..." He says taking hold of the cloak "I'm sure I would recognise if it's cursed. Trust me, this is perfectly safe!" and he quickly puts it on.

After taking a short breather from clearing the obstacle, the party continues its journey down the tunnel. Approximately 30 feet beyond the pit and out of sight around a corner, Jedah spots a long, 3-foot-wide wooden plank that rests against the cave’s wall.

The tunnels continue on, leading deeper beneath the Kortos Mounts for about half an hour until they eventually open into a large cavern. What must have once been beautifully carved reliefs and inscriptions have since weathered heavily, their features dulled and softened to the point that it is hard to distinguish what each once depicted. The carvings here are different in style from the petroglyphs found elsewhere in the caves, and from their condition, appears significantly more ancient. There appears to be 12 sections of these inscriptions altogether.

If you examine these inscriptions, each of you may make a knowledge (history or religion) or linguistics check. Barring that, you may attempt an appraise or perception check. If you know the languages Aquan or Azlanti, you receive a +2 to skill check for each of these language you know.

A wide tunnel exits the cavern on its far side, and blue-burning torches line the passageway’s walls.

Katswiri tenses slightly as Kronas puts on the cloak, before relaxing when he doesn't spontaneously turn into a fish. "The cloak is magical, but I also don't recognize the enchantment. Based on the motif, it seems likely water related. Perhaps an aid to swimming, or the ability to breathe or walk on water, or an enchantment to transform the wearer into a sea creature? If we encounter a pool, perhaps you can test it."

Katswiri hikes along in silence as the group progresses further underground, making mental notes of the distance traveled and pondering the cloak's inscrutable magical aura. When the path opens up into the cavern, she gasps in surprised delight at the ancient carvings, before moving up to get a closer look. "Amazing, such ancient work. From a previous civilization? Earlier gillmen work, rediscovered in modern times perhaps? Fascinating...can someone watch the passage? I can meditate on the meaning of these petroglyphs, but someone put those torches there, and we don't know if they will be friendly." Katswiri meditates for about half a minute, mystical insight ordering her mind and bringing the meaning of the ancient carvings into sharp relief before her eyes snap back into full focus, knowledge obtained.

Can I try all of those checks, or just one?

Haha, it's fine, Katswiri. That roll blew it out of the water. But first...

While Katswiri meditates, Vincenza examines the torches on the wall. She quickly realises that they carry no ordinary flames. No heat emits from the fire and no smoke or soot is produced.

Katswiri's eyes suddenly open, filled with divine revelation. She walks up to four sections of the inscriptions, and points out to the party in great detail what they had represented. The others have been too damaged by time to decipher.

see maps and handouts for pictorials and description of the four inscriptions.

knowledge(religion) DC10:
From these four, you deduce that the inscriptions are from the History and Future of Humanity, the principle holy text of Aroden, the god of humanity who died or disappeared over a century ago. The images on the walls are likely depicting these passages, focusing on parables that feature Aroden’s 12 guises, meant to illustrate his hopes for humanity: the artist, beggar, craftsman, farmer, fisherman, hunter, merchant, scholar, shepherd, soldier, tailor, and thief.

knowledge(religion) DC15:
They are slightly different from those that typically appear in the version of the text you have come across, suggesting that these might represent an earlier version of the work. You can't help but sense a faint lingering presence of divinity in this cave.

By the way, you can take 10 with knowledge checks when you're not in combat.

Kronas clearly sees a magical aura radiating from the torch, an effect quite captivating as the scintillating glow from the aura meshes with the actual light that it is throwing out. Kronas is able to remove the torch from the wall without any incident.

Yes, knowledge checks with DC10 can always be attempted untrained. And outside of combat or anything distracting, you can take 10 with that knowledge check. However, Kronas has already made the knowledge roll, so unfortunately, you know nothing, Kronas. :)

Katswiri smiles at Kronas and gives a little laugh. "Indeed, I have always thought so. In this case, I believe the images are representations of Aroden, the dead god of Humanity. He had twelve aspects, and four of them match the legible images here."

Katswiri gestures at the remaining eight columns, too worn to view. "These are most likely depictions his other representations. Aroden was Azlanti, and the gillmen are the last remnants of those people. Hm...I wonder if some of them still worship him? Perhaps this is a pilgrimmage of some sort. I am going to take a quick depiction, then let us see what lies further down the passage of blue flame."

Katswiri takes out her journal and paints quick images of the carvings, before moving on.

Year of Boundless Wonder

After recording what you can from the cavern walls, the party progresses deeper into the cave system via the wide tunnel on the opposite side. The tunnel is short and your party stops cautiously just before it ends.

The soft light of the surrounding fungus mixes with the flickering glow of the nearby torches to reveal a grand chamber. A large pool of water along the chamber’s southern edge reflects the blue and green radiance to illuminate the massive stalactites that cling to the ceiling 20 feet overhead, some measuring 10 feet long from base to tip. Two other tunnels branch off from this area, leading to the east and west.

Rising up from the pool is a column of rock with steeply sloped sides and a flat top, as if someone had sawn off the top of a massive stalagmite. Something appears to be carved on top of this column of rock but you can't make out the details from this distance.

What catches your eye, however, is the lone figure kneeling at the edge of the pool. His back is facing you and he does not appear to have noticed you. You can see distinctively gill slits down the sides of his neck.

She draws a deep breath, and exhales quietly, readying herself as exciting thoughts of learning about a new race and culture race through her mind. "Well, here it goes."
