Year of Boundless Wonder

You summon and I come... Setting the stage for some pre-game RP.

Each of you receives a general call from the Decemvirate of the Pathfinder Society. This is indeed a rare happening for seldom do lowly agents, especially newer recruits like yourself, cross paths with any of the 10 mysterious Pathfinders who form the Decemvirate, the ruling body of the Society. Only Venture-Captains usually have such an honour.

You report in the morning of the designated time to the Grand Hall of the Lodge. By that time, the hall was already filling up with Pathfinders of all races, appearances and experiences. There still appears to be some time before the briefing would commence, however, and the hall is abuzz with speculations on what the Decemvirate could have summoned you for. You manage to find a seat around a table, although there are already a few occupants.

So, the four of you who've checked in so far are seated round the table.

Azhagoth sets his weapon aside and takes a seat at the large table in the Grand Hall. He cautiously watches Lox as the Andoren introduces himself. After a moment, he grumbles out a greeting to the man, "Peh. Shame you turned from the path of a real warrior by hiding behind your chemistry, Hedley. That sword you carry would serve you better, just as it serves Our Lord in Iron, Gorum." He pauses for another moment as he thinks back over his last outing with the Pathfinders, then looks at Lox again with a critical gaze, "Say, you're not one o' those chemists that mixes up poisons and other concoctions to weaken the weak are you? I met a fella like that last time the Society called, and he and I didn't get along too well."

Naomi looks up from the cards splayed on the table. "It is not the tools used that makes one a real warrior, but rather it is what one does with the tools they have that determines their worth."

Quan Tai sits carefully at the table and seeing his companions, sighs audibly, "Sun Wukong, spare me from your trickery."

"If we are indeed to work together, we should know each other. I am Quan Tai, a monk from the Order of the Golden Dragon in Xa Hoi. What is your name, half-orc? Can you do more than swing that sword of yours?"

He takes a moment to get a closer look at the tiefling, "What tools might you have, oni-kin?"

"That," Azhagoth says, pointing at the tiefling woman, "is well spoken indeed. And I would echo Master Quan's question about what tools you carry." He turns to the half-elf, "I am Azhagoth Fellcleaver, a servant of Gorum, who has granted me some small measure of power to aid me in meeting out his judgment upon those too cowardly or corrupt to fight without the use of unnatural and unholy magics and trickery. So to answer your question, Quan Tai of the Golden Dragon, I can do more than swing a sword, but will only do so when a judgment must be carried out."

'Late...well let's see how much I've missed already.' the small Garundi man spies the large doors wide open. Nearing the room he hears a bunch of voices speaking. 'No shouting that's always a good sign.'

He slips in and is surprised to see so many fellow members already in the hall. Looking around he quickly sees a spot at a table with an unaccounted chair. 'Odd group but it's that one or the table with the dwarves' shudddering at the thought he casually makes his way to the table sits down amidst the odd looking group. He is able to just catch the last snippet voiced from a serious looking half orc.

"Greetings my fellow Pathfinders." he tips his head slightly at everyone around the table. "You appear to be a capable group. I am Bishop. It seems someone is interested in cards? Is this some solitary game or are you all playing while we wait for one of the Decemvirate to show?" You watch as a dark-skinned Garundi sits down at the table. His eyes are unnatural yellow which gives him either a very exotic look or a very creepy appearance depending on your preference. Dressed in white robes he wears a hooded burnt orange cloak that covers his face and drops down to his ankles. On his neck he wears a symbol of the Great Dreamer, Desna.

"Cards is it. I have a talent for the divination as well when the Great Dreamer sees it fit to bestow me with the gift." he removes a small pouch from his belt and gently shakes the contents of the pouch into his hand.

Three objects fall out each carved in a unique shape. Each is a polyhedron: one with eight faces, another with twelve faces and the final one has twenty faces. One each face a separate symbol has been painted on. They are no longer than medium sized nut.

"And what great power gives you the ability to read the cards?"

"I had a Harrow reading when I traveled through Varisia. I remember I drew the Marriage, the Forge, and the Tyrant, but the old woman reading the cards hardly told me a thing! Just hurried me out of her home with the gravest expression on her face. I don't put much stock in the practice." he shakes his head disapprovingly.

"Dragon teeth. No sir these are crafted from the rarest of sands of Osirion. Gathered from the once-lost city of the Four Pharaohs and then blown together by the glassmakers of Sothis. I would think that using the teeth of such a magnificent creature would be a wonder few could ever say they lived through. Still just as few have been to the city of the Four Pharaohs. "I don't much care for the Harrow. Only the gifted can read them, they hold no life lessons nor wisdom inherently, and they tell only what greater powers want them to. The tarot on the other hand, can be used by anyone, holds much wisdom in the tales of the cards, and they can tell much in a passive way that while less distinct than harrow, doesn't need the intereference of greater powers, especially about the one who deals the cards."

Azhagoth nods approvingly as Lox explains his use of his alchemical abilities. "There is no shame in making use of one's own intellect to bolster martial ability. At times, Gorum grants me some of his power to bring me closer to his divine might." At that moment, Azhagoth notices the newcomer enter and silently take his seat at the table. ***OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT

Overseer thread

Decemvirate Speaker

”The Decemvirate are truly grateful that so many of you have answered this summons to the Grand Lodge, for they, above all, know the trying lives that field agents endure. Indeed, you have only to look about this courtyard and gaze upon your colleagues to know they have come from all ends of Golarion to be among us. Look not grim, but rather determined, for this summons is not one brought of dire threat or terrible consequence. No! The Decemvirate has instead summoned you to taste the opportunity to enter the greatest contest of martial arts the world has ever known—the Ruby Phoenix Tournament”

”The legacy of Tian Xia’s legendary mystic arcanist, the nearly immortal Grandmaster Hao Jin, the Ruby Phoenix Tournament is held only once every ten years. The Tournament is run by Sifu Xho Nuo, Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix and sole heir to Hao Jin’s secrets. The prize for victory: an artifact pulled from Hao Jin’s fabled collection of the greatest wonders Golarion has ever known”

”Though Xho Nuo has made no formal announcement, we have learned the sifu has chosen to hold the qualifying round for this decade’s tournament here in Absalom. The Pathfinder Society has long sought to send one of its members to compete in this tournament. If our information is true, this means that for the first time, the Society has the opportunity to qualify a good number of its field agents. While the chance to glean an artifact from Hao Jin’s collection is enticing, that is hardly the entirety of our goal. However, I shall speak more on this subject at a later time”

”At present, we have learned that Xho Nuo plans to host a covert meeting to address all would-be contestants. Don’t get too excited though; it’s supposedly being held at a decrepit tavern in the Docks called the Devil’s Dregs. Go there and see what details you can pick up about the competition and the other entrants, but watch your backs. There’s little law to protect you down on the wharves, and it’d take a riot to raise any attention. Oh, and I wouldn’t expect an appearance from Xho Nuo either, as his social status prevents him from contact with such filthy and common places. My guess is that he’ll send one of his agents to rile up as many lowlifes as possible to serve as fodder for the first round of the contest”

”Lastly, though its likely Xho Nuo is aware of our interest in the competition, we need all our agents to maintain as much secrecy as possible. For all we know, he has deliberately chosen Absalom to bait our interests, so it’s imperative that he identify as few of our agents as possible. From here out, to keep our affiliations covert, we request all of you make arrangements for your stay outside the Grand Lodge. Try to pick a place that’s low key to avoid attention. Don’t worry about the cost though. The Decemvirate will pick up the tab. Good luck.”

Welcome to the Multi-Table special – Blood under Absalom, we are now underway!

"Well, how about we go with a cover story to aid in hiding our affiliation. Perhaps we are group of treasure seekers. Such a ruse would make it easier to blend in, and of course, what group if treasure seekers worth their salt wouldn't want to get one of the prizes of this tourny? Shall we?" she puts her palm on the table.

Before the Decemvirate announcement
A message starts spreading around the Great Hall for Pathfinders to gather in the courtyard outside. Together with your new found compatriots, the six of you stick together, whether thrown together by fate or by lack of seating in the Great Hall earlier, and push your way outside.

A tall woman wearing a metal mask waits for all fidgeting to settle down before she speaks, her voice magically masked to hide her identity and enhanced to reach everyone in the crowd.

After her announcement
You see Pathfinders gathering into groups discussing their actions, just as the six of you also naturally congregate. In fact, some of the group of Pathfinders are already making their way out of the Grand Lodge, presumably to head towards the Docks.

We'll have to keep our affiliation to the Society quiet as the Decemvirate's messenger said, and this world's full enough of those looking to make a q quick profit. Quan Tai purses his lips, "Such a prestigious tournament should draw more than just lowlifes." he pauses, then sighs, "Very well. I shall change into more appropriate attire. I daresay my training robes will go quite unremarked in the Docks."

Tai changes into his monk's outfit, securing his wand of shield in a spring-loaded wrist sheath beneath the sleeve on his left arm. He takes his wayfinder from his belt and stows it beneath his blanket in his pack.

Once ready, he returns to his team, "What are we waiting for? Let us find this Devil's Dregs and assess our competition."

As you make your down towards the Docks, you share amongst yourself what you know of the place. It is a bustling area where longshoremen constantly load and unload cargo destined for Absalom's markets and elsewhere. The district itself is a rather rough place, though, as the Harbor Guard tends to turn a blind eye to most brawls and the like as long as things don't get out of hand. Young touts are found nearly everywhere, announcing the services of all manner of businesses. These include a number of cheap water side taverns and brothels located here.

From the directions that was passed around at the Grand Lodge earlier, you arrive at a quiet, rundown section of the Docks, and you spot a weathered wooden sign hanging above a wide alcove that reads “Devil’s Dregs.” The tavern seems to have been built over the sea itself. A pair of thick double doors within the alcove lead into the tavern. Boardwalks border both sides of the tavern, with their own set of entrances. Windows are scattered through the tavern but they are greasy and dirty, and you can't quite see inside.

See maps and handouts. Doors are brown and windows are blue.

Kiang Zhen

Without warning, a flash of smoke flares up from the center of the tavern floor. As it clears, a towering, golden-skinned humanoid of hideous and terrifying countenance steps forth, ebon teeth gleaming fiendishly. Standing before the crowd, she greets them with a slow and gracious bow, yet her eyes never look away.

The creature gestures to call the crowd’s attention, and one by one they fall silent.

“Good evening and allow me to introduce myself, I am called Kiang Zhen. My sifu, Xho Nuo, the Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix, wishes for me to tell all of you that he is most pleased to see so many of you eager to attend the tournament. It is his desire that everyone please find a table and make yourselves comfortable at his expense.”

The room becomes increasingly packed as contestants file in, and barely a minute later arriving contestants quickly fill all remaining tables leaving the tavern with standing room only – yet more and more continue to fill the place out – it is tightly packed and it is a struggle to both keep a hold of your own food and drink as well as dodging the spilled food and drink of others.

A short time later…

”Again, your attention please. I regret to inform all of you that Sifu Xho Nuo will not be present this evening, though he has appointed me to speak on his behalf.”

”To speak with candor, there are many who wish the Sifu dead and wish to steal from him the ancient secrets he was appointed to guard. This comes as no surprise to the Emissary, for he has been charged with the protection of a great and terrible power. Even now, in this very room, some of these same individuals sit amongst us. To them I say, Sifu knows who you are and fears you not. He even entreats you to join the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, for he shall not compromise the primary intention of the contest – to find the world’s greatest martial artist. Rest assured, this tournament shall test the mettle of its contestants, regardless of their intentions. Competition shall be fierce and violent without regard for contestants lives. That is your concern – not mine, not the Emissary’s. Those who fail might be lucky enough to walk away with their lives. For this reason, there are few places where our tournament is truly welcome. Thus, given the nature of the tournament and other circumstances, the Emissary has expressed to me the need to retain secrecy. However, I assure you he shall make an appearance before the end of the qualifying round.”

”Lastly, I have noticed many of you have come as teams. This is good, for initially, you may need help from allies you trust.” The beast pauses for a moment, letting his dark, pupil-less gaze hover upon the crowd. From his belt he unfastens a leather satchel and holds it aloft before the crowd. “I have here 100 rubies. On the morrow, fifty of these rubies will begin to glow, and those individuals or groups in possession of one such gem shall be contacted by one of our agents, who will give them the details of where the first event of the qualifier will take place.” then with a wide and wild grin he says “And so it begins!”

On his final words, he tosses the bag into the air, sending the rubies scattering everywhere. The next moment, he vanishes, leaving behind only a vaporous wisp.

A number of other people have also gathered round the tavern, some whom you recognise as fellow Pathfinders from the briefing earlier. However, there are many other strangers filing into the area. Clearly, they have also gotten word of the happenings and are hoping to secure a place for themselves. Some of them glare at you with open hostility before entering.

After checking the outside to your satisfaction, your party enters by the side entrance. Despite its sizable taproom, the Devil’s Dregs seems filled to capacity. The smells of cheap ale, unwashed bodies, and thick pipe smoke mix in the crowded room, as tightly squeezed contestants push and shove their way about the tavern. As one might expect in the Docks district, the tavern extends over the harbor, and beneath the floor lies the silty, brackish water of Absalom’s wide bay. The dim light of the tavern’s few lanterns exposes few specifics about the patrons or the surroundings.

Aside from the front doors from the shore, a set of double doors leads out of the tavern onto rickety piers in the center of both the east and west walls, and a number of windows look out over the harbor to the south.

Among the hordes of locals, some whom you actually recognise as Aspis agents that you have encountered before, are some
who are clearly foreigners from their dressing. Among the foreigners
stands a unshaven swordsman in ornate lamellar armor and a full helm bearing the visage of a snarling demon.

You find a position near the entrance amongst the crowd when suddenly, smoke burst from the centre of the tavern.

Naomi, sorry have to retcon your actions according to the rules of the scenario. I'll let you keep your bluff check should you pick up one later.

knowledge(planes) DC19:
You recognise Kiang Zhen as a kuwa oni, an evil spirit made manifest by occupying a human form. Knowing its violent and blood thirsty nature, you surmise that it is likely compelled by something, or someone, to carry out the wishes of the mighty Hao Jin.

The suddenness that Kiang Zhen threw the rubies into the air catches most of the contestants by surprise. Only those quick on their feet reacts fast enough to attempt to catch one while in the air, and even most of them fail to do so. The vast majority of the rubies clatters all over the floor, hidden amongst the legs of the contestants.
This is effectively the surprise round. Only those with combat reflexes or those who can't be flat-footed can attempt a DC22 reflex save to catch one. I've checked and it seems none of you have the feat, so I'll move into round 1. If I missed something there, go ahead and roll the reflex save.

Among the scuffle of the hopefuls scrambling for as many rubies as they can grab, you occasionally spot the faint shimmer of rubies from among the mass of legs and muddy boots. However, your sight is quickly blocked by the press of bodies or they are kicked away by careless feet. Scuffles start breaking out as contestants assault those lucky few who managed to snag one from the air, while others scramble among the floor.

Just beside your group, a lone masked figure dressed in red leather armor manages to snag one from the air. Only your group seem to have noticed him doing so though. He sees that you have spotted him, and glares at you, drawing two short swords in his hands.

For your round, you can attempt a DC20 perception check to spot a ruby on the floor. If you succeed, you need a move action to get there and a standard action to pick it up. Otherwise, you can attempt to attack one of the other contestants who have one and take it from them.

Terrain: The tavern is crowded but not to the extent that you need escape artist checks to move. It is also not difficult terrain but you cannot move more than your speed per round, i.e. no double move, run, etc.

Bishop watches in excitement as this Kiang Zhen figure tosses a set of red ruby stones into the air. While others watch his dramatic exit Bishop scans the room as the rubies scatter about room only to notice one snagged by a menacing figure in front of them. When the man, clearly not a fellow Pathfinder, draws his short blade Bishop follows suit.

"Circle him he grabbed a stone." Bishop tries to say this just loud enough for his companions to hear and then heads to cut the man off from leaving.

Moving into place Bishop draws his dagger Bishop and then smiles at the man, "Think of the odds here. There are six of us and one of you. We need not shed blood. Pass us the stone and leave freely."

Bit of a catch up post. Sorry for being a bit behind.

Azhagoth enters the room just behind Tai and takes up a position along one of the walls, not wanting his weapon to get tangled up in anyone else's legs in the tight crowd. He tries to remain close to his fellow Pathfinders, however. When Kiang Zhen appears and speaks of those present who wish to kill his master, Azhagoth begins to look around the room. So then we're not the only ones here with our own agendas. Good. That will make us harder to root out.

After the strange messenger disappears, Azhagoth looks around wildly as he tries to spot one of the fallen rubies.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

He catches a few glints of red, but is unable to definitely pin down the location of any of the gems, and so he turns to join the others in retrieving the ruby from the red-clad figure. He readies his weapon and calls out to the man, "My dark-skinned friend is correct. You are far outnumbered. Surrender the ruby and be on your way."

Although masked, you can tell clearly that the lone figure is disdainful of Bishop & Azhagoth's good-cop-bad-cop routine. Seeing Bishop blocking the nearest path to the exit, he steps up and stabs at him with his shortswords, and grunts, "Get out of my way!" Bishop, however, easily dodges out of the way.

Naomi spots the glint of the ruby. Summoning a magical force, she grabs the ruby and brings it to her, while feigning a fumbled catch.
Naomi, it takes a standard action to cast mage hand, then a move action to move the ruby to you. Hence, you can't take the total defense action. Also, only one perception check per round.

Ouncius, I'm not quite clear what your action is. And init has already been rolled. The figure has clearly gone into combat, so are you trying to demoralise him using your intimidate?

To all, for now there are still many rubies on the ground. On your turn, you may attempt a DC20 perception check to spot one. If you succeed, it is a full round action to move there and to pick it up. Otherwise, you can attack the lone figure for his ruby.

Though Azhagoth is now focusing mostly on the masked warrior, he continues to look around for any signs of rubies on the ground nearby.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Yet again, he is unable to spot any of the gems, so he turns his attention back to the warrior. "Very well, you had your chance surrender. Now you must suffer." He moves through the crowd, pushing aside those who get in his way, until he is in position behind the masked warrior, then strikes with his gauntleted fist to avoid accidentally striking any bystanders.

Move into flanking position, provoking an AoO from Red.
