"His name was... Archivin Walder, if I remember correctly" Almara replies to Azygg, pausing for a moment to recall his name. "His body was found mauled in the woods between here and the village, as if by a large beast. And, there seem to be a lot of rumours of a large beast flying around last night. It's easy to see how Jherizhana might be implicated, based on that. You will have to ask Sheriff Feldane to get the details. I don’t believe she's an unjust woman, but I think she’s under greater pressure to keep the peace than to find the guilty. After all, my people aren’t her first concern. My belief is a thirdparty investigation stands a better chance of clearing our good name than the local constabulary. I am sure you understand... Any more questions? Will you accept this job offer?"

Shera has trouble reading the woman, maybe because of her businesslike manner. She doesn't have any indication that Almara might be holding back or lying.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Azygg." Turning to the Tengu, Almara continues. "I haven't been there myself. As I said, it is supposed to be between here and the village. The sheriff can tell you more. You'd best to go her first anyway, to introduce yourselves. It wouldn't do if she thought you a bunch of troublemakers or vigilantes." She produces a letter addressed to Sheriff Feldane, signed and sealed. "I took the liberty to draft this. It introduces you as my chosen third-party investigators." She holds out the letter to you. She's visibly eager for to accept the letter, and thereby the assignment, but she tries not to let it show.

"I have every confidence that you will see this to a good end. I spoke to some of my people, and you came well recommended. Even Hajeck had something nice to say about your ability to see past the obvious." There's a hint of a smile, tempered by the severity of the situation.

Shera takes the letter."We will help. Our purpose in town was to retrieve a box from Mr. Walder. His death will complicate things. I'll go to the sheriff now. Yagi is right we might be able to find some clues if we go quickly."

I'm back and up to speed with the story.

Last days, Dindal went his own way on the circus. He really enjoyed strolling around by his own, never saw something like a circus before, normally being occupied with serious Taldane stuff. He rejoined the group with the show, and now joined breakfast.

"Poor mr. Walder. Although I'm very curious what kind of beast could be flying around here. Perhaps a true dragon? Exciting!", not really realizing how dangerous a real dragon could be.

You find Sheriff Kyra Feldane at the town jail, a woman in her fourties with short reddish hair. She agrees to meet you briefly, and after some introductions reviews the note that you received from Almara, speaking as she folds it and hands it back. "Very well, you are hereby allowed to investigate the crime scenes. I'll inform the town guard. I will caution you, though: As representatives of Miss Delisen, any misconduct on your part with reflect on the carnival."

She then provides you with the basic facts on the murder, speaking clearly and in a no-nonsense manner. "The victim was Archivin Walder, Ilsurian's moneylender and sometimes pawnbroker. He owns a local business called the Locked Box. Walder was found mauled while walking to his home after the circus last night. Walder's wife, who went looking for her husband when he never came home, discovered the body. Agnes Walder begged her husband’s guards - he has four, who live at the Locked Box - for help. Three of them left their post to search, and one guard stayed behind to secure the office. Thieves, presumably in league with the creature that killed Walder, burst into the Locked Box, killed the remaining guard, and stole many easily carried valuables, such as gems and jewelry. The robbery was interrupted when the guards brought Walder's body to the office instead of his home, and they glimpsed two humanoid figures fleeing in the night. Upon finding the guard dead and the building burglarized, the three remaining guards secured the building until I could be notified."

"Now, I am not entirely convinced a creature from the circus is responsible for the murders. But, the people of Ilsurian are fiercely independent and reactive. The mood in town is sour. There are stories all over the place about a great four-legged beast flying over town last night after the circus closed down, silhouetted across the moon. Of course, I'll be damned if I can find a single eyewitness who actually saw the sphinx. Now poor Walder is left dead in some bushes. It'd be one thing if these deaths were accidental, but the robbery angle has people thinkin' of a Sczarni heist. I’m not proud to say it, but this stirs a lot of unworthy opinions about Varisians. Miss Dionas, please take care to watch out for anyone who might be nursing a grudge..."

She stands up to signal the end of her report. "I will try to cooperate in any way I can, but you should know that I has to do what is in the best interest of the town. Any questions I can answer? Otherwise, I have to get back to work."

She nods to the sheriff in thanks for the warning about the townspeople's feelings. "Thank you for the warning. I will keep an eye out for anyone who looks overly angry with me."

"Yagi I believe it's at the "Locked Box". Should we go there first or to the murder scene? I"m concerned that the weather may destroy any evidence that is outside. You are a hunter. What do you think?"

Pedoro guides you down a couple of streets, to the Locked Box. Along the way, you see that your group draws some veiled glances. There's definitely talk among the townsfolk. The Locked Box is sturdy and solid as its name suggests, with high ceilings, heavy wooden doors and no windows. Just outside stand a man and woman of the town guard along with a teary-eyed woman, presumably Agnes Walder.

As Pedoro explains your presence to his two colleagues, Agnes wastes no time in showering you in her sorrow. "If only I'da been with me poor Archivin, none a' this would've happened, for sure." She sobs. "It just bothered me to think of him ogling that winged she-lion whatsit - All that prancin' about without a top on. But none a' that would matter if only Archie was still here with me!” She's about to break into tears, but catches herself in front of these strangers and dabs a handkerchief at her eyes.

One of the guards, a young woman with dark hair, puts a hand on the grieving woman's shoulder. "These people have come as representative of the circus, Agnes. They've investigating Archivin's murder as well. Sheriff's said it's OK." Agnes look at you, a bit sharper this time. "Oh, it that so? Do you... do you want to see the vault?"

Shera walks up to the woman her holy symbol prominently showing. "First things first, we are very sorry for your losses. We had come to town on business with your husband. I regret that I didn't have a chance to meet him. He sounds like a fine man. Is there anything you need? We would like to see the vault yes. If you don't mind, I'd like to hear what happened from you first. If you feel up to it of course."

Agnes walks up to Shera and briefly touches the holy symbol, closing her eyes for a short prayer. "Thank you. I... think I can." She nods at Azygg in thanks and takes a deep breath, which Pedoro uses to discreetly inform you that the bodies have just been taken to the temple of Erastil.

"Yesterday later, when Archie 'adn't come home, I got me worried. So, a' put on me stout boots and went over to Booth's field - that's where the carnival is - to check up on him. I did na get halfway, when I saw him, in a bush off to da side." She shudders are reliving the moment. "There he was, me poor Archie, and so much blood..." I ran home as fast as I could, to get me husband's guards to help. They carried him home, but then we found the store had been robbed! We just saw two figures fleeing, down the corner there."[/b] She points. "And then we found Ercan inside, who must've tried to fight off the robbers."

As she gets to the end of her tale, she takes a key from a cord around her neck, and opens the massive front door. "Please, come in."

Lamps illuminate the large showroom. Glass display cases, broken in a few places, line the walls, while two additional cases sit like islands in the center of the room. The cases contain an eclectic mix of valuables such as unusual tools, masterwork weapons, jewelry, fine china, antiques, and artwork. A set of merchant’s scales rests on top of one of the display cases. Some of the display cases have been smashed, with broken glass on the floor already swept into careful piles. "This is where we found Ercan," she points to down the hall. "To the left are the guard's quarters, to the right is Archie's office. The double doors there lead to the vault." Agnas waits by the front door, watching you carefully as you investigate.

There is little of note in the showroom. Some inexpensive-looking items were left by the robbers in their haste, while Agnes explains that the valuable items would have been in the vault. "I think they did get in the vault," she also says. I... I haven't dare check, to be honest." She hands you the key.

A large polished desk dominates the office. Hooks for hanging lamps are permanently affixed to the walls, while mounted behind the desk is a large framed portrait. Running along the
east wall is a large display case filled plaques, framed documents, trophies, and stuffed animals. This was Archivin Walder’s private office. The portrait behind the desk depicts Archivin and Agnes in their youth. The desk is locked. The display case contains mementos of personal value rather than treasures: Walder family portraits, a signed copy of the town charter, a stuffed and mounted bear, a mounted reefclaw, and a boggard short spear. You find no evidence that the robbers were here.

The guard’s quarters contains two cots and a bunk bed. Footlockers are tucked underneath the cots to store personal belongings. A table and chairs are in the room’s center, a well-used deck of harrow cards on the tabletop. A large, rusty red blotch remains on the floor where the guard’s body was discovered. "I tried to clean the blood, I did. Prob'ly ne'er come off. He had 'is throat slit, you know? Poor Ercan."

Double doors that stand open lead to stairs down. At the end of a short hallway in the cellar is a massive vault door. It is closed.

Agnes looks at you in surprise from the top of the stairs, having to take a moment to collect her thoughts. "Oh no, it's not like that. The trap here is harmless. It's only set by a pressure plate in the vault itself. Meant to capture any robbers on the way out, if they manage to get int' the vault. The hatch automatically closes after a while, same as the vault door." She doesn't seem entirely pleased with Shera's admonishment on the matter, but holds her tongue.

Yagi senses no subterfuge. The woman is simply frazzled and not thinking too clearly. "Yes, yes. Go ahead." She drops her voice to a whisper. "There is a... hidden panel just to right of the door, inside the vault. The lever'll disarm the trap, once it's set by stepping on the pressure plate. Please... No one know about this except for me and Archie." She sighs. "Well, just me, I guess..."

Shera opens the vault door. Beyond the heavy steel door, this darkened chamber is lined with shelves, including freestanding shelving in the center. There is ample room in the vault, but labeled boxes, bags, weapons, and armor are spread throughout.The vault contains the Walder family’s better collection of items, gems and jewelry, and masterwork weapons and armor when not on display, as well as coins minted in Korvosa, Magnimar, and neighboring countries. There are even a few boxes belonging to Ilsurian citizens who pay a fee to have belongings stored securely.

Following Agnes's directions, you spot the hidden panel to the right of the door, with its lever to disarm the trap.

You enter the vault. Just as the door is about to close and Shera is busy casting a Light spell, everyone else sees a woman sneaking around in the vault, about to bolt for the closing door. She is thin and completely bald, covered only in patches of clothes. Her skin is grayish and seems to blend into her surroundings.

Knowledge local DC 16:
The woman is probably a skulk, a race of cowardly and lazy humanoids that live on the fringes of society, stealing what they need and doing what they must—even committing casual murder—to survive. They are known for having a chameleon-like ability to blend into their surroundings.

@GM, I don't think you specified whether we disabled the trap or not.

If so:
Yagi engages the trap so it will catch the woman if she manages to evade everyone.

If not:
Yagi guards the panel, prepared to trip her if she attempts to go past him.

Azygg, I forgot about your curse. You wouldn't have been allowed to act.
Yagi, surprise round is move or standard only. I'll take the move action. The trap is still armed. If you're still walking around in the vault, it wouldn't make sense to keep having to still disarm it.

The gray-skinned woman looks to her right, but finds that path already blocked by a bird. Rapidly running out of options, she darts for the door. Hoping that Azygg is as stunned as he looks, she squeezes in between him and a sturdy set of cabinets, then past Yagi. The Tengu is quick to react, and snaps out his weapon to trip her. With a fearful look in her eye, the woman falls on the ground.

She provoked an AoO from Yagi (not from Azygg or Laurallei). For reasons of pace, I used Yagi's last roll as his AoO.

The vault door is starting to swing shut. It will close in 1 round unless someone tries to hold it open with a DC 12 Reflex save.
