"Perhaps you can look at those valves. I think you are the only one here that knows about mechanics."

The nagaji paladin tries to inspect the mechanisms himself but looks quite clued. He assists Ib in anything he needs though to shut off them.

Given enough time (i.e., Taking 20) Ib will be able to disable the vents.

Once the halfling fighter finishes redistributing the steam throughout the complex based on the advice from Vulcus, the group advances through the building. The only way forward is via the ramp in the center of the forge, which slowly begins to widen as winds up into the structure in a 60' long spiral.

Along the ramp, the corridor’s walls are decorated with mosaics of a female pilgrim’s journey. Throughout these scenes, a small golden idol of Moloch perches on her shoulder, suggesting they might be part of some sort of ritual. At the bottom of the spiral, the innermost loop is covered in a large mural that shows the devotee of Moloch abandoning her family to begin a pilgrimage to the Citadel, as well as her journey through the Qadiran desert, with sandstorms, steadfast refusal of water, and a heat-induced vision of Moloch. Near the mosaic, a super-heated vent of air from the forge blows upward across the outer wall of the loop. Next to it lays a pile of black sand.

Perception 10:

The mural depicts the pilgrim placing sand in her face and allowing the desert winds to scour her eyes.

Moving up, the middle loop illustrates the passage through a hoodoo maze, which after some examination clearly represents the maze outside the citadel. Throughout the maze, the pilgrim encounters increasingly large fire creatures, but in each case she prostrates herself to them and is allowed to pass. In the center of the ramp, an obsidian statue of a towering bull-headed man looms over mosaics of pilgrims kneeling before it.

The outermost loop shows the final judgment of the pilgrim. The golden idol looms over the entire Lava Temple, reflected in every torch, lava pool, and smoke plume. At the end of this part of the mosaic, the pilgrim immolates herself by placing her hand in a bonfire of blue flame. A much smaller brazier of blue flame stands on an ornate sconce in the passage.

If anyone wants to perform the ritual, please let me know.

Throughout the ritual loop, there's a number of doors that lead to a series of long abandoned rooms all covered in a thick layer of sand, including bed chambers, guardrooms, a rude kitchen and dining hall, latrines, and storage closets. Only one room does look recently occupied, as it is devoid of sand, and contains three rough bunks and a small shrine to Moloch. Searching it closely reveals nothing of interest or value.

At the top of the loop, sits an ornate spiral stair leading up. The murals here depict Malebolge, where the pilgrim has been reborn as a fiery warrior clad in black armor and standing in a paradise of water and palm trees, though hints of darker skies and fiery storms can be seen in the distance. Along the walls, choirs of fire creatures sing in celebration, and a frieze on the ceiling shows the golden idol of Moloch smiling over his hordes.

Knowledge (religion) DC 15:

This is obviously a cultist’s ideal of Moloch and his domain of Malebolge—the truth is far darker and much more sinister.

The paladin continues walking up very carefully, unless someone tries to follow the mural example, case in wich he waits ready to fight whatever appears. The nagaji casts detect evil and keeps scanning the area for evil auras as he moves (or stands on place).

Deciding as a group not to attempt the Moloch rituals, the group continues to the top of the loop and up the spiral stairs at the top.

The staircase opens onto a grand hall of polished obsidian and red marble. The walls are decorated with reliefs of a gleaming brass city, a massive sandstorm scouring a desert, and a horde of fire elementals descending on a city full of terrified humans. Rivers of slowly bubbling lava crisscross the floor, all streaming out of an elaborate altar at the far side of the room. Atop the altar sits a squat golden idol, 3 feet tall, of a bull-headed man, its arms raised and its hands holding a large thorned sword and a huge battleaxe. The idol’s eyes glow a deep crimson. Lava flows impossibly fast out of the bull-headed idol’s open mouth and down its torso, fanning out from there into rivers on the floor. Behind the altar, an obsidian relief of geometric forms stretches from floor to ceiling. Smoky forms flit across the relief ’s surface, their fiery eyes staring out at the group with diabolic menace.

In three spots on the floor, there are the steam vents the dwarf warned you about, but hopefully Ib's work in disabling them will prevent them from harming you.

A Qadiran human woman, wearing scale mail and carrying both a mace and whip, stands behind the altar and appears shocked to see you. She immediately moves behind the idol for cover and begins to cast a spell.

A serious warning about the map: Yes that is real lava. It's very likely your PC will die if you fall into it or touch it. Since we're in combat, you cannot take 10 to cross it.

Xien yells "The idol!" and then the nagaji looks at the enemy and says "You! Surrender the idol! Depose these evil cultism!"

The lava rivers are less than 5' wide. Can we Medium creatures assume we can step over without much difficulty without the need of jumping?

The nagaji goes over the lava bravely looking for the cultist.

Once he is next to the altar, he throws his trident at the creature if he is still casting the spell. If the creature is not casting, he instead readies to throw the trident whenever he casts or attacks.

Ib attempts to throw his starknife at the woman. Seeing his starknife fail he moves behind the tallest person.

The lava flows are all at least 3 feet wide, which is not insubstantial especially if you do not have room for a running start or have a poor Acrobatics modifier, therefore everyone will need to make an Acrobatics check to cross over them unless they have some other means available of bypassing them.

Quiella attempts to activate her Wand of Shield, but fails to coax the device into working.

Xien leaps over two of the lava flows easily and tosses a trident at the woman who continues to cast a spell, but his aim is off and it only hits the altar she's standing behind. The Nagaji's threat seems to hit home, however, as she looks visibly shaken at what his presence seems to portend.

Ib tosses a starknife as the woman which unfortunately just clicks against the floor and almost falls into a river of lava. The fighter then opts to move behind Quiella.

Alexandria and Growler both fire their ranged weapons, but the woman uses the altar to her maximum advantage and avoids their projectiles. Tiger, however, has no trouble leaping over the gouts of lava that fill the room to arrive closer to melee range with the spellcaster.

Unsure what to do with the lava in the way, Muirdacaien takes a few moments to think things through while he puts himself in a full defensive posture.

The woman's spell finally completes and a disgusting fleshy creature appears next to Xien and attempts to claw at the paladin with its half-formed limbs, but cannot penetration his armor.

The woman in scale mail then desperately begins to cast another spell, which continues well beyond the scope of normal casting just like her previous spell.

It's Knowledge (planes) to identify the creature, but I believe no one in the party is trained in that skill.

Xien slides past the fleshy creature with some fast foot work to place himself in front of the woman. Off balance slightly from his acrobatic maneuver, he is unable to land his shield blow against her even with his flank attack.

Tiger has more success as s/he closes in and bites the woman. The animal's teeth sink into her leg, however she manages to continue concentrating on her spell.

Alexandria, you will need to make an acrobatics check to be adjacent to the idol. Since failure could result in death, I'll let you decide whether or not to attempt that. In the meantime, I placed your icon back next to the stairs.

Alexandria easily hits the idol with her crossbow bolt, but the projectile just bounces off the idol without doing any obvious damage.

FYI, Ib. It looks like if your base speed is 20 feet, you take a -4 to your Acrobatics rolls to jump. Even taking that into account, you would still make the DC's

Both Growler and Ib jump over the lava flows. Growler's jump isn't pretty, but it's effective enough to get him to the other side. He shoots an arrow afterwards, but it strays far from the target. Despite his small size, Ib manages to leap over two flows to bring himself adjacent to the fleshy monster.

Growler:

The woman's spell finally finishes and a house-cat sized beetle with two glowing yellow-green spots on its carapace pops into existence just south of Tiger! Using the element of surprise and flanking with the woman, it's mandibles cut into Tiger's left haunch! 2 damage to Tiger.

The fleshy creature oozes over away from Ib to flank Xien and tries to hit him again with both claws. This time one of his attack manages to sneak it's away around Xien's defenses and the paladin takes some minor damage. 4 Damage to Xien.

"Moloch, give me the strength to crush these infidels and keep the portal open!" The woman cries out, then casts a spell defensively at Xien without leaving herself open to attack, but looks angry and shocked when it has absolutely no effect. She tried to use a fear effect.

Uughh! I'm useless! Quiella grunts in frustration. She draws her Crossbow, steps to the left, and fires a round at the Beetle. Then she looks at the ceiling for anything she might be able to attach a grappling hook to in order to swing over the lava.

Positioned myself flanking the bug with the tiger. With 40' move I should be plenty able to get there.

Quiella, unfortunately, finds nothing useful nearby to help cross the lava. She does, however, stick a crossbow bolt into the beetle.

Xien easily connects the metal ball of his flail against the woman's torso and she begins to scream out curses to him in a language he doesn't understand. The Nagaji then heals away his injuries.

Tiger focuses all its attention on the woman, but her armor proves difficult to overcome and she receives no further injuries. Growler continues to have issues hitting his target with his bow as his arrow falls harmlessly in the corner of the room.

Evidently tired of being out of the action, Muirdarcaien unleashes the rage inside of him, leaping over another lava stream and cutting the beetle into pieces with his scythe. What's left of the insect pop out of existence.

Alexandria shoots a ray of fire at the fleshy creature on Xien and hits it easily, yet the fire does not burn it at all. In response, it lets out a disgusting laugh/burp.

Ib draws his glaive and strikes the flesh monster with a strong blow that does significant damage, but not as much as the weapon would ordinarily do.

The creature ignores Ib and continues to press its attack against Xien, but is completely ineffective even in a flank.

Okay so those were some absolutely terrible rolls. I'm hoping the fact that for both of those jumps I could get 10' running space and the fact that I've got 40' move helps a bit if not well damn :(

Muirdacaien, with a 10 foot running start, you will be able to make the DC for the first acrobatics check, but with having to compensate for the running start you won't have enough movement to make the other jump with Ib in his current position. Let me know if you want to change your action or just stop in the middle area after the first jump.

Finding the weak spots in her armor, Xien strikes the spellcaster with both sword and shield, but she remains conscious only until Quiella's sling bullet clonks her in the head. With that, the spellcaster falls with a clang to the ground.

Since your target is dying (but not yet dead), Growler, would you like to change your action?
