Sensing the tension in the air, and the fact that these zealots would not take no for an answer, Havelock makes his move and the party decides to forcibly resist the Razmirans. The thugs were ready for possible conflict and react immediately upon any sign of resistance.

Initiative Order

  • Baboon
  • Thug 1
  • Havelock
  • Isador
  • Thug 2
  • Eloriand
  • Kat
  • Thug 3
  • Sylorin
  • Tarek
  • Caoilte

The screeching baboon attacks Caoilte at the first sign of trouble, nimbly getting the jump on Caoilte. The noisy primate deftly jumps of Caoilte and bites him in the neck! Caoilte takes 6 damage from the monkey bite.

The crossbow wielding thug on the barge aims at Havelock as he begins his challenge and lets fly. The bolt sails wide of the mark and into the Glass River. The thug begins to reload his crossbow.

Havelock blasts the lead thug with an magic missle. The thug's shoulder recoils violently with the impact of the missile and the thug yells in pain, but still stands.

Isador seizes on the distraction and lets fly an arrow at the same thug. Isador strikes true, burying the shaft deep into the thug's skull. The man topples, suddenly silenced as blood pools the deck.

The remaining thug takes a step toward the plank and sticks his sword into the deck, levelling his crossbow at Havelock. He takes a shot at the magus but his bolt ails wildly into the air.

Eloriand fires at the gibbering ape but is unable to lock aim on the small moving creature. His arrow thuds into the deck near Caoilte's foot, missing the baboon.

Kat draws a bead on the thug moving toward the plank and clips him in the shoulder, drawing a cry of pain from the zealot.

Sylorin begins to unleash an arc of lightning at the thug on the faith barge, but his movements draw the attention of the attack ape. The ape snaps at the cleric as he casts his spell, but misses the casting holy man. Sylorin sends an arc of flickering lightning streaming toward the thug. It slams into him, causing the crossbowman to shake and stutter violently as the energy acs through him leaving the man smoking like a fire but still standing.

Tarek moves toward the barge and unleashes some of his power at the other vessel's sail. A noticeable spark erupts near one of the sails, causing the other ship's crew to scramble and investigate, the sail smolders a bit but does not catch fire. The crew races to find buckets to prevent the sail from further damage.

Caoilte tries to pull at the ape and takes a swing but misses the dexterous primate.

The ape jumps at Caoilte again and tries to take another chomp, but its teeth bite into Caoilte's armor saving additional damage.

Party up for round 2. Initiative was established via Hero Lab.

I positioned Tarek where I thought he would be to cast spark. If he is within striking range of the Razmiran then he will attack. If not then he will move withing range and then attack

Tarek growls as he sees his efforts go wasted. At the very least, that should keep the crew busy

He then turns his attention to the Razmiran that is next to him I do not think we had a chance to meet. It is a shame you were not more agreeable. You could have walked away with a few coin and your life Tarek then swings his sword at the brigand.

I am not sure at what point the baboon gets flanked but I will let the GM/Brew adjust my attack roles as necessary

The enforcer still on the barge is able to prop is smoldering form against the rail and fire off another shot at Havelock. The thug manages to skip a bolt off Havelock's shoulder, taking a chunk of shoulder with it. Havelock takes 3 damage.

Havelock ignores the crossbowman and jumps into the fray trying to tag the baboon. His swing is wide of the mark and clangs off the deck as the ape screeches and jumps about. Note Havelock and Caoilte are now flanking the monkey, +2 on attacks, Havelock still misses.

All of the monkey jumping, melee and waves are not enough to shake Isador's aim. He clips the ape in the shoulder causing it to emit a high pitched, ear bleeding, screech directly next to Caoilte's ear. The baboon's eyes roll into the back of his skull and it keels over dead. Very close to having SA apply there, have to be within 30 feet otherwise it would have..

Eloriand, even though ready willing an able to put down the screeching baboon, sheds a lone tear as his party slaughters another unwitting creature of nature. He takes his anger out on the enslavers of the beast by wheeling on the remaining enforcer on the barge. He lets an arrow fly and is able to bury it deep in the thug's chest. Wordless, the crossbowman teeters over the edge into the Glass River, still as dawn.

Kat draws on the last enforcer and is able to wing the thug in the shoulder, causing the zealot to cry out in pain. In a flash, Sylorin, Caoilte and Tarek close on the thug. In a panic looks over his shoulder and if contemplating retreat, but is run through by Tarek before he can move. The thug grasps at the blade buried in his chest before letting a last gasp escape and falling limp.

Once the last of the thugs is dispatched, the captain signals his crew and he and every member cease all activities and stand with there hands clasped on top of their heads, clearly signaling their surrender. The Abacus captain engages the barge's captain in a brief parlay before the captain reports to Havelock. Sir, it seems these men have been pressed into service by the vile Razmirans. They ask for safe passage and readily surrender their vessel to us. I do not doubt their situation sir, for it happens all the time in these parts. I would welcome them aboard sir, but the expedition is yours to command. Your orders? The crew of the barge are lined up along the eastern rail of the barge, hands over their heads awaiting the party's decision.

Placing my long blade back in its decorated scabbard I look and listen to the Captain of the Abacus and then over to the barge captain.

To the barge captain I say, Though I am from Cheliax, you can relax and know that I am not one that enjoys useless slaughter, nor do I believe that men should be made slaves. I welcome you all aboard the Abacus, so long as you work together with the Abacus' crew and subordinate yourselves to his orders or ours as long as we are on our expedition. Betray our kindness and mercy, and I will use Cheliaxian criminal discipline on the guilty, but I am sure that won't be a issue.

The question I have is what to do with this barge...do the Razmirans own it or is the barge also impressed? It must either come with us, or we must scuttle it along with the bodies because at some point, it will be missed along with the deceased. The deceased need to be weighed down with a few of the Abacus' or the barges ballest stones.

If we scuttle the barge, we need to rapidly do it while also moving as much valuable cargo or items off it, exception being anything that is of official Razmirian property that could incriminate us. If there are documents that show we have paid the boarding tax, we should take a cop of such a receipt and any extras that the Captain may wish to keep for future mercantile endeavors.

Thoughts?

The red listens to Havelockk and nods, That sounds like a fine idea.

She then looks over the absorbed crewmen thoughtfully, How long have you been in 'service' to those three fish bait? Is there any insight you can give us on their patrol routes, modus operandi, tricks and traps for blockade runners, check points, signals to other disguised faith barges? Kat glances over at Izzy to see if he had any thoughts from another possible smuggler's mind.

Tarek wipes the blood from his blade and is relieved that the fight has ended and none of his companions are seriously hurt. He listens to the captains address each other and then to Havelockk.

It seems to me that the Gods have presented us with a gift and a fine opportunity

Tarek examines the barge closely It do recall that a few of us were in agreement in following Kat's idea of splitting into two groups and investigating the inn. Perhaps arriving in two separate vessels will seem far less suspicious? We can use it's current crew to bring some of us to the inn as payment for setting them free from Razmiran control. Perhaps we can even use this vessel as a decoy once we have freed the captive emissaries? There are many possibilities here and we should not be quick to get rid of the barge. The longer this barge stays away from Xer, the less likely anyone will learn of what happened to the Razmirans. I am certain the crew can tell us when they were expected back to port. That should let us know how much time we have before Xer starts sending out search parties. Having the barge sail away will appear that we have been searched and paid our tariff. Towing it or scuttling it may arouse more suspicion than needed.

If we are in agreement to sending in a scouting party, then using this barge may give us the best chance at success. If the scouting party does get into trouble then the second group would not be far behind to lend aid

GM:
Is there anything else you can tell us about the barge? Markings, flags, colors that may represent it's status or use?

Oh, one more thing to add Tarek motions his companions to move closer

He then speaks in a hushed tone I don't think we can risk having the other crew come aboard and discover our special cargo. There is no way of knowing if any of them have been swayed by Razmiran ideology. If they have, then I am certain they will report us if given a chance. The less they know about us, the better. Perhaps we should keep the emissaries out of sight until we decide what to do. I will let them know to remain below until we have come to a decision, unless nobody thinks it could be a problem?

Tarek will go below deck to explain the situation unless someone has something to add

I agree with Tarek on this one.. it is best if they stay on their vessel.

Glancing over to the other ship and then back to Havelockk, he slings his bow over his shoulder and then removes his rapier.

How about Caoilte, Kat and I go over there and take a look about.. These fellas probably have a smugglers hold on the ship plus we can take their colors for our own use.

If you are right, they may also have some official documents that are used to identify which ships have been taxed already.

are you able to channel positive energy to heal? It is a great way to heal multiple targets and save your spells for later. Something tells me we may not be running into any undead anytime soon. You would be able to heal both Havelockk and Caoilte for 1-6 points with one use. Just a suggestion if it is available to you. Tarek used his quite a bit when he had that ability.

The party begins the transfer of crew as they decide what course of action to take. The crew of the barge seem to take well to the Abacus and seem to fit right into the current crew's routine. Kat garbs the barge captain by the arm and gives him the third degree. The captain gives Kat the breifest look of disdain before checking himself and answering her directly. I am afraid I can shed little light as to that, ma'am. I know we were the only barge operating in this section of the river today. Our floats are usually quite long so the barge will likely not be missed until after nightfall. As for communications, the faith barges are fairly distinct in their appearance and announce themselves rather obviously. The captain gives Kat a respectful nod. Wordlessly, he looks to his arm and leaves her once Kat releases him back into the crew.

As Havelock goes below to inform Temel and the dwarfs of the battle, Temel steps forward and addresses Havelock I do hope you are planning on scuttling the barge. We cannot risk the exposure the vessel represents. Trust me, it is the best way to maintain or cover. Metella also steps forward. She fixes Temel with a scowl and turns to Havelock, I hate to say this, but Passad is right. You must destroy the evidence of this encounter. The Razmians will send out forces we could not hope to overcome should this be discovered.

Taking it all in, Havelock shares this information with the party. The captain of the Abacus pulls Eloriand aside and echos both Temel and Metella's sentiment, indicating scuttling the barge is the only sure fire way to keep the barge from being discovered the longest. Neither Temel, the dwarfs, nor the captain seem at all hesitant about taking on the crew of the barge.

After the party is given a few moments to confer, the captain of the Abacus approaches Havelock. Orders sir?

I, personally, am split on this. I can see the wisdom in both courses of action and if what the faith barge's Captain is correct then it might not make a difference either way. Perhaps what we can find aboard can help us make the best informed decision.

After careful consideration, the party wisely decides to scuttle the recently captured barge. The captain of the Abacus takes a mixed crew over to the doomed ship. After about an hour of work, they manage to chop enough holes in the bottom of the hull to send it to the bottom of the Glass River. The captain quickly musters his newly bolstered crew and sets the Abacus back on its course to the Gray Revelation.

As the ship continues on its course, one of the members of the dwarven contingent, Aumauhak, climbs up from the hold and approaches the party, now gathered on the deck of the Abacus. He smiles gently to those gathered Hail Pathfinders. Unfortunate business with that barge, but you dispatched them quickly. Tell me, what plan have you made to execute this rescue? Trust me, I am not questioning your competence, rather wish to aid you if at all possible. As the dwarf finishes his question, the party notices Metella and Passad emerge from the hold and join them at their location. All three turn to the party to await their ansers.

So that pretty much means that the general overview of the "big plan" we have right now goes something like: "Get in there... Improvise."

Other than that, I think that we are set on tackling this from two fronts. Unless we change things around, I think that Sylorin, Havelockk and myself are going to go in the front while the others try to find the back way in. And hopefully we can meet somewhere in the middle as I do not know if we have a way of communicating between groups once we split up.

Kat well said, and Aumauhak that is the basics of the plan. We lack any detailed knowledge, and of course, if you have additional thoughts or skills that might aid us, we are definitely in the mode of listening. As Tarek mentioned, we do have the ways and means to keep you concealed when the boat docks.

Aumauhak, how are you? The plan, as I understand it, will involve some jibber-jabber here, some jibber-jabber there. I’ll say “Why don’t I hit it with my axe?” someone else will say “Maybe we should talk.” We’ll talk, and then I’ll end up hitting something with my axe. You might want to write that down. It’s a little shy on details but that’s about how it’ll work out. Oh and Izzy will try and steal something.

Isador lets out an exasperated sigh.

Caoilte, Caoilte, Caoilte... how many times must I remind you. I do not steal anything. I am very concerned when I see things of value left unattended and I pick them up for safe keeping... until the rightful owner can be identified of course.

He gives a quick wink before turning his attention to Aumauhak.

well, I for one appreciate your willingness to assist in this mission. What skills do you offer that might benefit us and your captive friends?

Amauhak gives Metella a concerned look upon hearing the party's suggestions. The meaning is clear, that both he and Metella exhibit palpable worry about the parties lack of a definite plan. Metella smiles to the group and speaks to them calmly Yes, I understand how you wish to proceed once we arrive at the Inn, but, if I may suggest, you will likely need to concoct a plausible reason your party is at the Inn. Preferably one that will not arise suspicion. Perhaps if you were to say that you all were religious pilgrims seeking answers of a deep spiritual nature. Such a ruse would ensure that others would give you the freedom to explore the inn as well as encouraging privacy in your affairs. Metella smiles to the group as Temel steps forward with an exasperated scowl on his face.

Really Metella. Do you want your envoy rescued? Do you wish for these Pathfinders to be captured or worse? Let me assure you Archons, follow Metella's suggestion and it will be seen through as the transparent nonsense that it is. The answer is very simple. Pose as merchants and let the staff of the inn know you are seeking to secure lodgings for a rather large caravan that will be passing through in a few days. This way, you can tempt the proprietors with the promise of a fat purse of gold and, at the same time, have leverage to insist that you inspect the property to assess its amenities. Temel smirks as Metella quietly steams beside him. Do what you wish, but let us not forget what happened the last time you followed the dwarf's wisdom. Best decide though, as we will soon be at our destination. Passad and the dwarves leave the party to contemplate their plan and return below.

The Abacus continues on her way down the Glass River. The river narrows ahead, flowing around a central isle thick with trees and vegetation. The northern fork of the river runs beneath a canopy formed by the isle's overhanging trees and riverside foliage while to the south, the river is open to the sky above. As the ship approaches the island, the captain stands next to Havelock and eyes the north and south fork. He speaks crisply to Havelock Our course sir?

Upon hearing the suggestions presented by Temel and Metalla the red frowns in thought. Once the others return below deck she quietly addresses her companions, Both suggestions have merit and while our host's attitude is really starting to rub me the wrong way, I see more potential problems in posing as religious pilgrims given what we know about the Raz-a-ma-taz zealots. Pilgrims may have some sort of phrase or gesture that is part of their journey, or the inn may not even be on an approved route.

She then glances over at Izzy, If we decide to go through the front as merchants then perhaps you would be the better choice to go in that way as you seem to have a better feel for the merchant life and might be more able to pass off as one while Havelockk and Sylorin, or maybe Caoilte, could pass as a merc bodyguard picked up while in port at Kerse.

After the Captain asks for the course around the island Kat asks him if they had access to a spyglass. If they are able to use one she will look first and try to see if she can find likely ambush points on either side before handing the spyglass to El for his ranger opinion.

We seem to at least have a few minutes before a decision has to be reached. I am learning quickly that if I have a hour to study a problem, then it is best to spend 50-55 minutes of it studying and understanding the nature of the problem and 5 minutes answering it.

Thinking for a quick second.

I think the issue at hand is which course of action buys us the most time to accomplish what we need to do. Which story can we tell to give enough half truths to be more believable. Kat you make a great point, but how many of have any real true business experiences and I am not sure how much trade or commerce flows through Razmiran. Based on what we saw earlier today, I am of the opinion that average merchant caravan would steer well clear of this place. We are going to stick out like sore thumbs either way...if we are potential religious pilgrims...seeking answers to life..that perhaps their "living god" can answer...on our way to the Exalted Wood and to First Step. We can simply say we met in Durma, at whatever the Inn was before met Temel, and say that after a few drinks, we all learned that there were answers to questions in life that we were seeking...clearly we have all had out doubts on one matter or another... insert the real life story...and it should be enough to buy us the time we need. We can plead ignorance, and if we need to be directed to the local temple or to Xer, we can just ask to spend the night from weariness and claim we will head out the next day...thoughts...any of you?

GM: Is this inn the only structure on the water? Is there a town around the inn? Is this region known for trade, pilgrimages, or travelers looking for adventure and wealth?

When the ship docks, will we be given a description of the area? I was just thinking we would make our plan based on the type of people we see and activities taking place since none of the NPC's provided us with any Intel

Tarek listens to the thoughts that have been shared

I worry that any mention of religion will make us targets of the zealots. If we did choose that option it may help us in finding the emissaries, but I fear it would be the most risky plan of action.

Merchants could work but that Razmiran pirate did not buy our story and I don't know how believable we would be. We would need to look and act the part. That would mean suitable attire, knowledge of what we are dealing in Tarek gives a quick glance to Kat and Caoilte and proper manners and diplomacy

Why can't we play the role of something more to our real situation? We could be the scouting party for a prince, lady or wealthy warlord who is on their way up North to aid in the battles near the world wound. We are seeking secure and proper accommodations for our extremely wealthy liege. We could still gain favor with the proprietor of the inn just as we would pretending to be merchants.

Whatever we decide, we need to clearly state our roles in this charade and pick someone who will primarily speak for the group.

We must not lose sight of our main goal, which is to locate the emissaries. We don't want to get caught in a fight and our only option is escape

That sounds like the most reasonable story yet. Though I don't know if I can survive without giving a table dance in the middle of the zealot's nest... she says with a Cheshire grin.
