Eloriand was up early to catch breakfast downstairs in the common room of the Pig's Paunch. After finishing his light meal he made his way to Venture Captain Ambrus Vaslin office according to the page's message. While waiting, Eloriand could not help but wonder what things the group would experience and what new creatures he would see.

Isador tosses the parchment on the nightstand as he shakes his head..

What is this man’s fascination with meetings at daybreak. He is probably going to ask us to save the world, again, but we will have the whole morning to prepare for travel. How about the next time he just write what he wants us to do on the summons request and save us all some time and effort.

He shoulders his pack and picks up the oil cloth bag holding his bow before heading down the stairs muttering to himself as he descends to the common room

I hope there is food this time..

I take the note from the page's hand and closing the door to my room, I walk over to the lamp and verifying the seal, I break and read the message. I can't help but smirk, grateful that I only enjoyed a pint of the triple brewed pale ale.

Well, looks like its a early start once again ...best to study what is in my spell book, and prep everything now just in case we are told we leave immediately for the world wound or something like that.

I meticulously go over all of my kit, in particular the longsword/spatha that I paid to have a mastersmith make for me....running the sharping stone along the edge of the parallel edged rhonboid bladed weapon befroe inspecting my mail shirt, helm and other kit. Once insuring that all is well oiled and polished, I go over the memorized spells from my spell book to make that I have the proper spells memorized, as well as the ability to change them, should the scope and scale of the mission be different from anything so far we have encountered on this island.

I say a prayer to Aroden....and to Iomedae before a bath and shave....not knowing when either I may have again if we immediately head out.

Waking early, I grab my tightly packed kit and head out the door, looking for any of my companions to walk the way to what ever mission Venture Captain Vaslin has cooked up, or pulled out from where the sun don't shine.

Well, here we go again

Hello all. Caoilte enters and with clean armor a new axe and a red shield with a small yellow circle painted off center. Where’s that god botherer Tarek at? Hello Kat, you got something in your teeth Caoilte points to his right incisor,. right about there.

After waking from a fitful sleep Tarek looks at the table across the room and sees the note from the night before and remembers his presence has been requested at Vaslin's office. Tarek groans. This is far to early to function, let alone to hold a meeting.

Thinking to himself, What could he have meant when he said to Choose? This is the second time that dream has haunted me since the fall in the tower and I am no closer to understanding the meaning. Tarek shakes his head and tries to stay focused on getting himself ready

He slowly rises from the bed and stumbles across the dimly lit room as he prepares himself for the dawn meeting. I better not make a bad impression by being late to my first meeting as a recently inducted member to the society. He quickly splashes some cool water on his face, tries to work out any wrinkles in his clothing and heads out the door.

Tarek approaches the door to the lodge. So many times he has entered these doors only to leave with frustration as he was denied acceptance. Today is a new day and his presence is not just requested, but is also welcome.

Tarek pushes open the door and sees the faces of his companions and smiles. A bit early, but is is good to see you all again. I take it you all received a similar note? Tarek holds up the piece of parchment that was delivered to his room. Anyone have any idea what the meting is about?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The party musters in the office of the Venture-Captain of the Grand Lodge of Absalom, Ambrus Valsin. Promptly at dawn, as if the man coudl magically divine the exact moment the sun rose, Ambrus briskly walks into his office, followed by the same haggard page that delivered your invitations. The efficient man offers a curt greeting before proceeding.

All right, Pathfinders! Listen up. I know some of you are new recruits and all of you are eager to make names for yourselves in the organization, but first we need to make sure you are up to snuff and won’t get yourself killed out there. I have a number of small assignments for you and your team, and it would be best if you could finish them before the day’s end.

Every day we get some doe-eyed hopeful or some sniveling bootlicker willing to do anything to join up with the Pathfinders. Most of them are good kids, but not all of them have the salt to make it in a world like this. It’s rough out there and I’m not just talking about the ruins, tombs, and wilderness Pathfinders find themselves in on missions. We’ve got people who look down their noses at us, folks who think we squander our resources, and agents who want to take everything we have collected. This wealth of knowledge and these items of lore make us the most powerful organization on the
planet. That said, since we are fractured and widespread, it’s difficult for that power
to light on anything for too long. For every friend of the Society, there are two enemies.

Your first mission, to test your mettle and loyalties, sends you to meet a few people important to the Society living here in Absalom. These are other venture-captains or close allies of our organization, so follow their orders as you would mine. I’ve prepared a list of things I want you to do. They’re not arranged in any particular order of importance, but I want them all completed as quickly as possible. Only report to me once you complete them all. Included in the envelope you hold in your hands is the list, complete with the name of your contact, and directions to the meeting location.

Captain Ambrus hands Tarek a parchment detailing the mission parameters. He then turns and once again addresses the party. One more thing. He looks over to Sylorin with a forced smile and gritted teeth. The...Society leadership...has granted a request made by the Church of Shelyn. This is our newest Pathfidner Sylorin Molay. He is here to make our world a more beautiful place by spreading love and such things as we conduct our very critical missions. He is a bit untested, so I am assigning him to you folks. See that he is made welcome and does not die on his first outing.

The Venture-Captain straightens and clasps his hands beside his back. After a few moments he looks to Caoilte. That is all. Good Luck Pathfinders. Ambrus then turns and again walks curtly, this time out of the room, followed by the beleaguered page.

Assigment #17:

  • A man named Guaril Karela runs a curio shop in the Docks called the Pickled Imp. Go to him and fill his request as a favor to the Society. I believe it has something to do with a set of rare books.
  • Ollysta Zadrian requested aid and is expecting you at the Temple of the Shining Star in the Ascendant Court. She needs someone to deliver a parcel of medicine and curatives to a needy orphanage and verify the character of the recipient.
  • Visit the offices of Osirian nobleman Dremdhet Salhar in the Wise Quarter. The Pathfinder Society needs to obtain permission to delve the Salhar ancestral vaults beneath Sothis. He has made a verbal agreement, and your visit makes it official. You will receive an official charter and detailed maps. Do not embarrass the Society in this matter.
  • Chelish Paracountess Zarta Dralneen possesses an item loaned from the Vaults. Meet with her in her estate in the Ivy District and retrieve the item in her possession.

The red gives a small nod as Eloriand speaks, I was wondering if that would be more efficient myself. The question would be how to determine whom the best people to send on each errand would be.

Isador quickly scans the list and looks up upon hearing Eloriand speak.

Well, since we only have to the end of the day to complete our mission, it would seem prudent to split into smaller groups.

My talents may be best utilized when dealing with nobleman Salhar and Paracountess Zarta Dralneen but I am open addressing any.

Isador looks at Sylorin for a moment.

Welcome to the group.. you and Terak might be the best resource to meet with the clergy at the Temple of the Shining Star.

Tarek examines the list and then looks over the map in Vaslin's office It is a shame they do not have a messenger service to deliver items in Absalom. They could even call it Speedy Messenger Service.... Tarek seems to be lost in thought for a moment...I will come back to that thought another day, let me remain focused on the task at hand.

Tarek then looks to the group in the room First, I would also like to welcome Sylorin. I am sure a little love will go a long way with the rest of the group. I think they may need to get in touch with their inner feelings from time to time. Tarek gives a slight smile.

It seems we have an early start for a reason. Although I would normally say that splitting up may be a good idea, I am not sure if that would be so in this case. His brow furrows slightly The good Captain just mentioned that for every pathfinder there are two enemies of the society. We have no idea who else may be aware of these items we seek and their desire to obtain them. We have no idea of the power of these items either. I am sure if they were just simple items, then the Captain's page could have retrieved them. Something tells me these items are of great importance and should be well protected.

My suggestion would be that we go to each of these locations as a group, we determine what these items are and how they should be retrieved and delivered, and at that point determine if splitting up makes the most sense.

As the captain said, we don't want to embarrass the society by fumbling what appears to be a simple task. I do not know what he has told these individuals. If he said that he was sending a small army and two people show up, it may seem as if the society does not think highly of their needs. We are being sent on a public relations mission and we need to put the society in the best light as possible.

I am not leading this mission and I will follow what the group decides. I think we should chose the most direct path to visit each location, so there is no doubling back, to make the most efficient use of our time.

Tarek turns back to the map and squints as he scans over the parchment Since I am new to this city, I really have no idea where these places are. Anybody have an idea of the locations of our destinations and the best way to get there?

Hmmmm, you know Tarek, in Cheliax there was a Chelish Town by the name Arelith that had exactly the thing you mention. A lovely city.

With chin cradled in my right hand i consider the list as tasks at hand.

Sylorin, welcome to the team, we may be more colorful than northern barbarian's kilt, but we do seem to get along extremely well, especially when things get a bit more exciting.

Keep a little space with Caoilte when he swings his ax, he tends to make a very good mess of things when he strikes and has a impressive splatter radius. I know a little of Shelyn, and while she is immensely beautiful I also know she can strike and lash out with her glaive, and fortunately she does sting back like the Wasp Calistrae, whom I would not mind being invited to one of her parties just to kill my curiosity.

Don't let Kat's good looks fool you...she'll steal your drink, your left boot lace, and napkin with a smile.

Tarek is a man of faith like you, solid and dependable and quite the educated thinker.

Izzy and El along with Kat are great with the bow, tracking down things and making sure our flanks are always covered.

I help out Caoilte with blade work with a bit of Arcane assistance, although I am no Lord Elric of the Dragon Isle.

Now to the matter at hand, I totally agree with Tarek that we do this as team and I recommend that we look at a map and plan a route that takes us in a ordered approach that logically takes down each objective task.

I think Slow is smooth and smooth is fast in this case and that we need to have a unity of effort. I think each errand has inherit tasks, both specified and implide and hidden that will require all of our skills.

Maybe not blade, arrow, or arcane work, but certainly other more subtle skills we have.

The Exchange

Female Elf Rogue (Unchained) / 3

Kat's ears perk and her head tilts slightly at the mention of Arelith but otherwise gives no signs of recognition.

I was going to suggest no more than two parties, each taking up two tasks, but I can see the advantage of staying in one group. We will definitely need to find the quickest route between them. She turns to regard her fellow thief, Izzy, didn't you say you were from here or at least been here for awhile? Do you know of any shortcuts?

She then gives a wicked grin and an askance look at Havelockk's boots while murmuring in Elven.

Caoilte looks around at the group with an “Am I in the right place” look. Did that list say anything about wrestling bears or cracking skulls? No, ok, well it looks like a noble lady needs her possessions safeguarded. I think that’s a little more in my lane. I’ll run that one down if nobody cares.

GM:
Considering that we are staying in the city and the tasks seem fairly benign, how would our characters be equipped? Full armor and weapons? Weapons and traveling outfit? I am guessing carrying a pack full of gear is not necessary. I am curious as to what would be the norm for city traveling and what our characters would deem reasonable for city exploration.

Sylorin listens carefully to Havelockk as he goes around the room describing each member with quite a colorful description. He thinks to himself that this is quite a diverse bunch we have here....this should make for some good stories!!

He listens to what Caoilte has to say with some astonishment, taken back by his somewhat rough demeanor. He grins at the fighter as he is reminded of someone he knew long ago that was always at the center of trouble.

Thank you Havelockk for the delightful introductions.I'm sure everyone fully agrees with the description they were given (grins). Now that we have the formalities out of the way, lets get down to business.Listening to whats been said,I agree that two parties should suffice. If need be,i sometimes believe that Diplomacy can win over a situation just as well as a sword, sometimes you just need to say what one wants to hear!..with a smile of course...

Isador nods in the direction of Kat upon hearing his name.

Yes, I am from the city although I do not recall sharing too much of my past with the group. Perhaps I let a little too much escape from my mouth after I filled it with ale; Damn that Pig’s Paunch!

He grins and gives her a quick wink.

I am very familiar with the Ivy and Coins Districts and I could find us a shortcut if needed. I know my way about the other Districts too but I would not count on any shortcuts in those.

As for trying to establish a predetermined route, I would recommend against it. We already know that one of the tasks is to deliver medicine which might leave us at a destination across the city and away from the next stop. I think it best to select a starting job and then choose the next based on the closest to our location then.

I understand the thought behind us traveling together but we might cause some fear if all seven of us show up on someone’s doorstep.

Based on our time constraints, I still think we should break into two groups but I will accept going as a mob.

Whatever we decide, we need to do it quickly; our daylight is burning.

And I am curious about what was thought to be books...

I do suggest that Izzy and myself do not go in the same group if we do indeed decide to split up as we have similar tendencies and there is no certain way of knowing when those would come in handy.

She gives a wink in Isador's direction, And you may or may not have specifically said you were from here, but you walk through these districts like they're your backyard.

I would also suggest sending someone whom can charm or at least have a good head for diplomacy to the task in the Wise quarter.

I disagree with splitting the groups....this is on of the largest cities in the world and while it is a grand city, it is still filled with vice, crime and murder...I think the orphans are the highest need and I am in full agreement with El..men of the faith might be able to administer healing as well. Oh and Kat...I replaced both laces with some extra thick cowhide ones soaked in olive oil...might make it a bit more of challenge next time..

I grin and look at my comrades.

we have done well as a team and I cannot help but feel that this is some sort of evaluation still on us...while I appreciate the task at hand to accomplish this with speed...if we run into trouble and one or a few of us end up dead we won't be feeling so efficient

while never stated in our games, I believe that the Grand Lodge is in the Foreign District

I vote that we head out now, it will take a little less than an hour to get there from here.

If we do separate into two groups, I suggest the other group start at the curio shop in the Docks since it is the furthest south. All of the other destinations are located in the northern part of the city.

Welcome on Sylorin. I don’t think we’ve met….well other than the fact that we just did. Caoilte says, extending a hand. To the group he says. I’m easy to please. I’m really not well suited for any particular task but I figure I can do any of ‘em. I’d prefer to go as a group though. I gotta figure if we’re being sent on errands they’ll be a little more difficult than they sound. Kinda like “Go to the cave and see what fish faces are doing.” Right. In a quieter tone he continues. Tarek returns his attention back to the map It seems that sticking together is agreed upon, now where do we start?

I don't think we need to be lugging around any unnecessary gear. I plan on leaving my pack here and bringing only a few items. I just need to gather what I need and should be ready to go shortly. Everyone else need more time?

I think we help the orphans out first...and see to the Cheliax noblewoman last...she would be blast....a residence I am sure ull of the stink of Asmodeas and other echantingly evil things.

The Exchange

Female Elf Rogue (Unchained) / 3

Kat shakes her head at Havelockk's comment. I would say either the medicine first or the noblewoman last. The districts they are in are too close together to split them up that way. I also agree with Izzy in that the curio shop down in the Docks should be our first target since it seems to be the furthest away as well as off by itself.

Our assignment also mentions that we are supposed to do a 'favor' for that shop keep, which may or may not involve rare books. If I were to guess, and I am, about where the favor for such rare books would take us, I would lean towards the Coins district which is North of the Docks and on our way to the Ascendant Court district where we are supposed to pick up the medicine.

The red takes another look at the assignment list while referring to the map and makes a small "hmm" sound. It would seem that the most logical, and possibly most efficient, order to this assignment list is to complete them how they are listed on the paper.

She looks over everyone, biting her lip in thought. Tarek* brings up a good point. We should probably travel light in order to both travel faster as well as draw less attention to ourselves just in case. We most likely do not need our full packs and bows are probably impractical in such a crowded city. On the other hand I do not want to be underprepared just in case we do run into trouble; and personally I would feel better if Caoilte brings along that giant axe in case he does need to use it as a point of diplomacy.

Beyond that point, I think everyone should bring what they feel they will need along. For example, even though I said that bows are impractical within the city I will be taking mine along as it is basically my only weapon. I do not intent to draw it within the city but we have no idea where will end up; and if push comes to shove, I would like to have something to shove back with.

On that note, unless someone wants to spring for a ride through the city we should get moving as soon as possible. It is a lot of ground to cover on foot and we do have a deadline.

Of Endnotes and Other Things:

* For some reason I keep writing Tarek as Tarken...

And for those of us who do not have that nice little piece of literature, this is a map that has both the district lines as well as the district names.

GM:

Kat will not be bringing her pack but will take her longbow and arrows as well and her ever-present hidden wrist sheathes full with the daggers she never uses. Her lock-pick kit will be tucked away in one of the hidden pockets of her outfit.

After careful deliberation, the party opts to visit Guaril Karela In the Docks and see to his assignment. As the party makes its way to the Docks, Isador spots a man definitely out of place for the surroundings. Nothing he can pinpoint, but he has a very strong feeling the man was following them. Before he can react, the man is obscured by the thong of people moving though the street and then is gone.

Despite the brief encounter, the party reaches the Pickled Imp in good time. This creepy shop contains myriad odds and ends, most bereft of any discernible use. A number of malformed creatures and creature parts bob in jars on a long, prominent shelf, a tiny fetal devil centered in this macabre lineup. The shopkeeper, a greasy-haired Varisian with a thin mustache, shouts from behind the cluttered counter:

Ah yes, I see the Pathfinders have arrived. I’m glad Ambrus was able to lend a few of his new recruits to help me. Please come in and let me tell you what I need. Looking around as if to be absolutely certain no customers are browsing the aisles of knock-off Thuvian burial urns or supposed Azlanti porcelain, he begins again. Well met. I am Guaril Karela. A friend of mine has a warehouse near here and he received a parcel on behalf of me and some of my associates, but there’s a problem. See, Master Gelbane had to leave town in a hurry and our shipment is still waiting at his warehouse. Rumor is he ended up in trouble with the law and the place was seized. I heard tell from someone down at the docks that some creep was snooping around his warehouse just the other night, so I want to make sure nothing of mine was taken. He keeps all kinds of things, from beer to nails, in that old pelican, but every now and then he stores something really special. This is one of those cases.

There’s a big crate marked with three crows arranged in a triangle. Inside that
crate is a smaller container with a few books and papers in it.That’s the only parcel I’m interested in,and as far as I’m concerned, you can help yourself to the rest of the crate.
Honestly, anything else you want in the place too. I’m sure the once things get sorted out, the city will seize most everything else anyway.

My associates and I often work with the Pathfinders when it comes to special relics and documents, getting them in and out of ports and across borders where the authorities ask too many questions. Most people don’t realize what they have and frankly many don’t deserve to have it, so sometimes we help take the goods off their hands. If things work out well and you get this done, I’d be glad to talk with you more and help you out with any future endeavors, as long as you help me out too. I’m good at returning favors, trust me.

Guaril gives the party a rather smarmy half smile, bows his head once and holds his right hand out, a gesture the party takes as inviting any questions they may have to this assigned task.

Keeping her expression as neutral and uninterested as possible she queries, Where exactly would this warehouse be and what should be expect to run into?

Tarek curiously examines the glass containers with the oddities inside while listening to Guaril speak. You do have quite the menagerie of goods within your shop Tarek then turns to Gauril to address the situation

This may be bit of a challenge if the warehouse has already been seized. I am certain it would not bode well for the society, if some of it's members were found breaking into a place secured by town guards. Somebody as....prepared...as I am sure Master Gelbane would be, would have left many options for entering his property without always being noticed. Did he mention to you of other ways of getting inside other than using the front door?

Once we find this crate how will will discern your items from any others that may be of a similar description?

Caoilte rubs his chin thoughtfully. Tarek, I think maybe you and me ought to have a little fight, right where the warehouse guards can see the whole thing. Unless you think you might distract them by showing a little leg. That ought assist our stealthy types with getting into the building unnoticed. If we don’t do it stealthy there’s a chance we’ll have to kill a guard and I’d prefer not to.

Isador listens to the banter as he inspects the shelves for anything of historical value.

Turning to face Guaril, he smiles and quickly inspects the man before speaking.

While your business is your own, may we inquire about the nature of this parcel? Would the persons sighted around the warehouse know about it? If not, would they understand its value if they just happened across it?

I only ask because it would be beneficial to know if we are competing against another party for the same prize.

Oh, are the items cursed in any way?

No offense but, given the nature of your wares, I want to be sure that we are taking all of the necessarily precautions.

He smiles slightly as he awaits his response.

Hmmmm, interesting. I have to ask, what are the other points of entry into this building to include windows....and might there be a way for entrance from the roof....I have to be honest...I am not a fan of crossing the city guard....but for clarification...who is this.."law" that has been crossed ? What information do these books and parchment contain?

Just one thing folks. I'd suggest leaving all the other stuff. Goodman Gauril here may not care if we take anything else but our commission is to retrieve the one item. I don't imagine the society wants the sort of attention that might follow if we cleaned the place out. Right, Izzy?

When the group is away from the shop owner, Eloriand feels obligated to inform the other he does not feel right participating in this particular mission and would rather ... sit this one out.

This does not feel right to me and I can't believe this is a Society sanctioned assignment. I wish I knew more of the Society's motivation in this matter, but given the information at hand I can't be a part of this action.

Tarek notices Eloriand's discomfort and steps off to the side to listen to what he has to say.

I understand why this mission does not sit well with you and it has me feeling a bit uneasy as well. All I can say, to reassure you, is that I trust Captain Vaslin and he seems to be a man of honor. Before we left, he mentioned that one of the things to be tested will be our loyalty. Perhaps he was referring to whether or not we would stay loyal to the society. He also requested that we follow their orders as we would his. We must put our trust in the society that they would not be sending us out to do any nefarious deeds

Tarek rests a hand upon Eloriand's shoulder We will need you on this mission. There may be more to this than we were told and the Captain is trusting in us to stay true in our goal so some other plan may be able to be played out. Let us investigate further before turning away from the mission. Will you reconsider after thinking upon my words?

Tarek addresses Caoilte's comments I am more than willing to help create a diversion, but I somehow get the feeling that even a mock fight will have me at the disadvantage. I don't know about showing any leg, but I am certain baring some cheek will get an immediate response He follows that comment with a slight grin.

I do agree that we should not take any items other than those requested. I see this as a retrieval mission, but once we start looting the warehouse we then become thieves.

Looking at El, Caoilte says. To each his own. I’d rather you bow out now than decide to do so when we’re in a pinch. Though it pains me to do so, I’m inclined to agree with Tarek.

I say we go to the warehouse and assess the situation first hand.Seeing something there at the actual spot might sway our opinion one way or the other.I do agree that this is probably a loyalty test. Why else would the Society knowingly create tension amongst the cities authorities? Then again,we might not be privy to that kind of information. There might be a higher calling.

The red can't help but give a mischievous grin and arches her brows suggestively, Which part? The cheek showing? You planning on putting on short skirts and giving a dance performance in the street? If all of you did it I'm sure someone would pay to see it!

Everybody would be watching it, they'd either be blinded or unable to avoid gawking... like a cart-wreck.

Quietly she adds A light-finger's field day in the making, to boot.

You know, I am rely getting frustrated if this is some mental logistics gsme of the society to prove or test our worth like some pawn in a larger game....that said, we do not know enough of what is in that building...and who these gurads are....i think bbefore we make any decison, we go to the warehouse, so a recon of the place and then make a decision. FOr all we know, the guards good be celestrail beings or demons....and the contents of that crate could be some lost Ark that could destroy the world...or a box of diapers. SO, why not we all go tothe ware house....and those of us that are the more stealth types, check it out...report to ll of us and then....then...we can make a good decision.
