Core Helms ! Wizards Wanted Gameday X

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 5–9.

A Pathfinder expedition has uncovered hitherto unknown levels in the Red Redoubt, a millennium-old siege fortress created by the machine-mage Karamoss. A source of Numerian technology in its own backyard piques the Society’s interest, yet informants in the redoubt speak of an aggressive contingent deep below that aims to reactivate Karamoss’s powerful forges. Can the PCs salvage the fortress’s treasure while also preventing a catastrophe that could crush Absalom?

Welcome all! :)

(A) Take a look at this thread.
Creating a PFS character for PbP.

B) Then take a look at Seaweed or Galdur XXI for how I have them set up. You can cut and paste that info into your character's profile, but the BBC tags will not show. I think this is also covered in the above thread.

C) Post in character to this thread. You can do this before or after you create the profile. When I know everyone is in we can begin. ('tis called 'dotting the thread')

D) Read through Guide to PbP gaming also. You don't need to read the whole thread, but go through the first page or so.

E) Ask any questions (preferably ooc in the discussion thread) ic questions here. :)

F) We begin.

A man walks in wearing the uniform of a Knight Captain of Andoran. He wears a well polished mithral breastplate, and carrying an adamantine shield that seems to burn with blue flames surrounding a star in the center of the shield.

The sounds of liquids slosh back and forth as a paint-stained abomination walks to the designated meeting location. At first sight it’s obvious the sloshing is her alchemical materials but upon a closer inspection her person is carrying an odd assortment of paints as well; the two unorganized in their position on her person. Wearing not but simple paint-stained clothes she appears with a wide smile eager for the fun to soon come from the new mission she’d be sent on. If not for her skin tone and the evidence of small bony points breaching the forest of her unnaturally pink colored afro it would be hard to identify her as a tiefling.

Hardly able to contain herself upon seeing another person already present, Pinpi's eyes focused immediately on a beautiful adamantine canvas. With a short gasp to prepare her for conversation she bounced closer to him, “Roger! Roger! We get to go together again, are you ready to have fun?!” Without waiting for a response, “I’m ready to have fun! It’s the most important part of being a Pathfinder after exploring but before reporting, but you knew that!” She announced matter of factly.

Edward, it has been some time since we last traveled together in Natambu. If your magics don't subdue any Robots we come across, my shield will make short work of any hostiles."

Captain Steves turns toward Ember.
"As to you, I don't believe we have met. It is my pleasure."
Roger extends his hand to Ember.

"Our other companions may be a bit strange, but their hearts are in the right place. They are also quite capable of handling themselves in dangerous situations." He lowers his voice. "Keep an eye on Pinpi though, she likes to paint on other peoples possessions, and her style is ... unconventional."

Speaking louder again, "My skills lie primarily in combat, I am skilled both close and far with my shield and my body. I will try to attempt to keep enemies from the rest of you.

Know that while I am a pathfinder, I will seek to combat tyranny and injustice where ever I might find them. Though I do not hold my companions to the same standards. The party arrives in the basement of one of the Grand Lodge’s outbuildings, per their summoning missive. This cold subterranean records hall is dim and quiet. In front of a heavy wooden door stands Venture-Captain Shevala Iorae, one of the Society’s premier experts on the ruined siege towers near Absalom. She waves and begins speaking eagerly as she approaches, the flame of her candle struggling against her pace.

“Hello! I’m sorry to summon you to such a bleak meeting space, but I’m gathering intelligence that I can really get only here. Come, you’ll have to see for yourselves.” Venture-Captain Iorae gestures toward the wooden door behind her, saying, “Before we go in, tell me—do you know much about the Red Redoubt of Karamoss?”

Does everyone know how to roll dice on the forums? If not you can copy paste the following inserting the appropriate names, numbers and the final closed bracket. ']'
[dice=???]1d20+x[/dice

Knowledge (arcana): A pathfinder may be familiar with some of Karamoss’s impressive magical achievements.

DC 20+:
Karamoss was a wizard from Numeria known as the Machine Mage. He allegedly spent decades researching automatons inside the notorious technological dungeon known as Silver Mount, and was said to possess unparalleled mastery over all kinds of constructs and machines.

DC 25+:
The red metal from which the Red Redoubt was constructed is called djezeteel, and has an enhancing effect on magic.

DC 30+:
The robotic army that Karamoss used to attack Absalom is rumored to have been built within the siege tower itself, using forges powered by elemental energy from the Plane of Fire.

Knowledge (engineering): The Red Redoubt is a marvel of engineering prowess.

DC 15+:
The entire Red Redoubt was built in a single night out of a strange red skymetal alloy called djezeteel, said to have been invented by Karamoss himself.

DC 20+:
Though the aboveground sections of the tower were destroyed, the underground levels seemed to be sound. As far as anyone knows, there could be dozens of unexplored levels below the surface.

DC 25+:
Supplying power to the tower—and creating an army of constructs—would have required an immense amount of energy. The tower was likely equipped with a powerful energy source, possibly a massive Numerian power generator or some kind of magical reactor.

Knowledge (local): The Pathfinder Society has been paying close attention to the fallen siege tower of late.

DC 15+:
The uppermost surviving levels of the Red Redoubt are considered relatively safe. Junior members of the Pathfinder Society are often run through obstacle courses here set up by their mentors.

DC 20+:
One recent such excursion took an unexpected turn when a team of Pathfinder recruits stumbled into an undiscovered sublevel of the siege tower. Since then, Pathfinder Society activity in the area has increased dramatically.

25+:
Venture-Captain Shevala Iorae has led the new efforts to explore the Red Redoubt, and she has sent scouting teams into progressively deeper levels of the tower. For the last few days, Shevala has not left the Grand Lodge, instead remaining cloistered below in a darkened records room.

Shevala opens the heavy wooden door into a cramped records room, eliciting a painful cry from inside, followed by curses in a strange language. The room is even darker than the hall outside, lit only by a few small candles. A sturdy wooden chair stands in the center of the room, on which writhes a curious creature. Long, rubbery arms spill over the sides of the chair and brush the floor, connecting to a torso covered in dirty green scales. Huge black eyes protrude over a drooping, sharp-toothed mouth that appears to close on only one side.

The creature squints against the light from the torchlit hallway, shouting, “Shut it! Shut the blasted door!”
“Pathfinders,” Shevala says with exasperation, “may I present Marw."

Edward steps into the room behind the Captian and Ember, thoughtlessly trying to poke the ifrit's skin. She corrects herself in a grand voice: Ed means to say, the power of FIRE!

Delayed stuff—nobody needs to respond
After some pondering, Pinpi concluded, “Everyone smiles!... Rojer-Rojer is just one of those inside-smiling people.” With the discussion of their proficiencies she smiled giddily at the thought of the Ifriti and them both having fun in the fire. “My name is Pinpi, as Rojer-Rojer mentioned. I make big fireworks. Real big ones! … I’m careful though, because I know they hurt good people as well as the bad.” Her discussion on the wonders of fire was cut short to the introduction of a pathfinder she’d never seen before—a happy little… girl? And a dog. The girl fighting for Pinpi’s record holding cheeriness. Mimicing Ember’s action and whispering quietly to him, “Ohh~ I like her!”

After the venture captain’s briefing Pinpi thought back on what she knew about Karamoss. She tended to know magical things and was a real people's person and so loved talking to people… but not much in way the of devices.

Arcana: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27
Engineering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Pinpi was about to explain what she knew, but Ed beat her to the punch. She wasn’t upset though—her way of explaining things was just as fun!... or more accurate… hm… … more fun. Thinking about who they were talking to though, Pinpi decided to play the guessing game, ”Are we going to get that giant power thingy Ed mentioned? Or way, another scouting team? Hm… Oh—oh! Is the reason you haven’t gone out of the lodge in a while because you found a secret friend deep below that’s been telling you all of the secrets and how now you know exactly what to do and so have called upon us as Pathfinders?” Pinpi spoke with so much excitement it was hard to believe it built up to the end of the run-on question.

Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

After being led to meet the strange creature, Pinpi leaned over to Ember yet again with a non-quiet whisper, "Gosh, you can't just ask weird big-handed things if they're chokers!..." She considered what she said for a moment. I mean what they are, which in this case is a choker... not to say he's going to choke you i mean really whoever came up with that name is mean... Her 'whisper' progressively longer than it should be.

Shevala explains that Marw is a guest of the Society as part of a deal agents made to secure safe passage through the Scrap Heap toward a yet more dangerous level—the Forge. The Scrap Heap is no stranger to scavengers, but over the past few years, raiding parties from the Forge have launched a number of purposeful attacks against it, sometimes dragging entire robot skeletons back with them.

"I need you to find out what’s going on within the Forge; if something is providing power to Karamoss’s robot foundries, it’s imperative that you deactivate that power source to prevent history from repeating itself. Of course, Marw here would also like us to ensure that whatever is scavenging in the Scrap Heap and endangering his people ceases to do so. Finally, please keep an eye out for anything of academic significance. The entire tower is a trove of historical data from one of the most fascinating periods in Absalom’s history! Bring me anything interesting that you can carry, and secure everything else so that future expeditions can study the artifacts in relative safety."

Pinpi listened to the preliminary mission details, but nothing stuck out as particularly interesting to her specifically. She was curious about two things though. "Now, when you say deactivate, does this have to be like... 'shh, bed time power source!' or can it be more of BANG! SPOOSH! EXPLOSION thingy." She asked, basically questioning whether they could destroy it if they couldn't simply quiet the power down.

Looking to Marw thereafter, her next question spoke with hypocrisy and built upon something running in her mind after mentioning it to Ember. "So... do you guys like... call each other chokers too or is that offensive? I mean I'd like to know what to call you ... your kind.. unless you do like being called that in which case, woah~ weird habits." "Well, i have no more questions!..." Pinpi stated, satisfied with the information already passed around. Though, she did take a moment to do another 'false whisper'-- this time to Marw, ""Psst~ you forgot fun! Explore, cooperate, report, and fun!""

Wonder if we have the capacity of time/place to purchase a wand of endure elements?
Also, probably a DC 10 perception to notice Pinpi's hair as about 80% paint.

"No further questions?" Shevala asks, "I have secured you safe passage to the Forge, but from there I am putting my faith in your skills and resourcefulness. This is an important mission for the safety of Absalom; please take the rest of the evening to prepare and equip yourselves with whatever you think you may need. You’ll leave for the Red Redoubt in the morning."

Finished with purchases?

Before dawn, Marw greets the assembled team and they head to the Red Redoubt. The entire Red Redoubt tower is built of a ruddy metal. The above-ground levels have been mostly destroyed and are used for training pathfinder agents. Marw leads you to a recently excavated section and through a pair of doors into a very small room. He touches a panel and the room shifts, a slight dizzyness and a bit of pressure on the ears, suggests a great fall.

Marw smiles at any obvious discomfort and offers "It'll pass, suck it up. Finally, the motions stops and the doors open to reveal a different hall than the one you entered.

A group of green scaled creatures with long rubbery arms stand as the door opens.

Ed happily leaps foreward with an elaborate introduction. Her voice changes pitch and throughout remenicent of a auctioneer. "Right! We're here to help! You got rats? Robbers? Undead? Robots? We can take 'em! Ancient Tomb? Lost Temple? Old apartment? We can map it! Our team is the best!" She pauses, fist pumped to the sky.
"Captian Rogers! Pinpi the Painter! Ember the Mysterious! Radical Edward! My dog, Ein! And..." Edward trails off as she realizes that she has neither heard the suli say his name, nor heard anyone else call him a name in her hearing, save for Ember who did it in Ignan. She soldiers on: "And the Amazing Naked Avenger, friend to the breeze!"

His head jerks to the populated hall, "Oh, there more Marw"

Sulii took the words out of Pinpi's mouth More Marw! Seeing the preoccupation of the group with greetings to the family of Marw, she took the chance to move closer to Rojer Steves with a few paint tools at the ready. Her attempts to decorate this time around would need to be sleighter than normal. Still, with the distraction of conversation-- she might just get something done! Just a recolor again, nothing special....
