One of Harsk's shots takes out a Vrock image, but the other sails true and hits the real Vrock, and it's a potential critical!

Harsk, do you want to confirm that crit? You have moment of Greatness, which would allow you to double your morale bonus if you'd like.

Also, you're under haste and have rapid reload, which I believe gives you a FOURTH attack since you haven't moved and a +1 untyped bonus.

As you search the Engine room [D2], you find detailed star charts, books in elvish. Most of them look like notes on various planets, but there are also books that appear to be on demonology, engineering, arcane arts and other theoretical subjects. You find construction plans for certain aspects of the ship, especially the Vrock cell.

A search of the Supply room [D3] reveals that This chamber was used to store the supplies the elves needed for their incredibly long journey. While some of these supplies were preserved food and water, the bulk was materials for repairing the ship, for research, and for comfort. Most of the equipment stored in this room was destroyed during the crash, but a few fragments of the ship's life support system survived along the northeast corner of the wall.

Perception DC 15:
There are several brass tubes fitted into the wall that have been partially buried by rubble. Several bottles of air were once attached to the tubes, giving the ship a constant supply of breathable air, but only one bottle of air remains functional. It can be detached from the tubes if you like.

Kiku sits in meditation, her ofuda for Zohls, Empyreal Lord of Truth and Investigation laid with care in front of her. She finally rouses, sliding it back into her box of ofuda and standing.

"The notes that we found said that Abbie was afraid of the orrery's ability to harm the Emissary. One possibility is that she meant simply using the magic abilities of the orrery against the Emissary. I, um, think that there is another possibility, when we look at everything we know."

She steps forward so that everyone can see her. As she speaks, she makes eye contact with each of her party members, and she speaks with a confidence not seen since the encounter with Abbie. While she might lack confidence in herself, she can be confident in what she believes.

"Why is this orrery so powerful? I think the orrery itself is connected to the Emissary in some way. It might have been what drew the Emissary to the ship in the first place. He also gave Abbie visions of it, so he probably wanted her to find it for him. Maybe if it is destroyed, it will hurt him. I don't think that it's a coincidence that those suffering from its mutations want to hold onto the orbs, either."

She draws her kapenia up around her head and licks the back of her teeth behind her closed lips, worried that she didn't use the right words.

Wei will meet Kiku's eyes and nod briefly before commenting himself.

"You have clearly and concisely hit the concern I have about reconstructing the device. In addition, if the creation and design was inspired by the Emissary, as it seemed to be indicated by the comments of the Captain, then activating it could very well be the signal that it needs to 'arrive' in this region."

The tengu pauses for a moment or two, eyes closed as he considers.

"We could destroy it. However, it is also a relic of a lost nation from another time. The Society would task us to Explore, Report, and Cooperate. Failing to learn everything we can about this device could be viewed as a failure to do that."

There's another pause.

"Whatever decision we make, it should be a group consensus. Failing to attain that will cause rifts in the Cooperation aspect."

"The other consideration is relatively recent events surrounding the utilization of the 'Sky Key' in Absalom. While many things were learned, it was also an exceptionally dangerous 'short-cut' that may have caused impacts on time itself that we have yet to see."

Hearing no strenuous objections, Shel warns the rest of her group back. Once they are safely out of range, she grabs the four missing planets and inserts them in their appropriate slots. "Stand back everyone, this could be ... strange. Captain, you might want to stand back with the rest of the crew as well. This thing can be tricky," she warns as she starts the orrery working.

“Trainee! You found the missing planets!” The Captain blinks in surprise. “Did I leave them in the Engine Room?” He doesn’t step back, but instead hovers, wanting to make absolutely certain that Shel puts each planet back in its correct place.

As she does this, the orrery glows, its planets rotating and starting to set their course. It’s absolutely beautiful, and you can imagine its gentle glow illuminating the entire bridge in the pre-crash ship, lighting its way to the stars. Golarian in particular glows, with one little section of Avistan lighting up with a star that you’re certain is the orrery’s way of indicating its present location.

Just as you’re starting to smile at this, you feel something else like a chill down your spine. Potent visions and hallucinations cloud your minds, as the being that you all know of only as the Emissary suddenly attempts to contact you for the first time through the orrery’s communication interface.

Your visions show you a creature of eyes and horror, hurtling through the stars. INTERESTING... YOU DARE OPPOSE ME? NO, IT CANNOT BE. SEE WHAT MY MIGHT WILL BRING. JOIN ME. STAND AT THE VANGUARD OF MY ARMY! The visions shift and fade, and then you see the creature floating above Dustpawn, as people scream and mutate into his mutant army. The army sieges cities, led by you, while you laugh as you snuff the innocent lives before you. Riches and wealth and power are offered to you, as mutant people bow and scrape before your might.

These visions affect Harsk, Kiku, Wei Ji and Yojimbo especially powerfully. All four are so horrified by the images that they are confused for a moment.

Harsk, feeling the horror of the mutant army, screams, ”Noooo!” and attacks Wei Ji, mistaking him for the enemy. Wei Ji attacks himself, trying to get the horrible images out of his mind. Kiku, never violent, suddenly rocks in place and hits herself with her quarterstaff. Yojimbo turns to his mistress with surprise as she hurts herself, acting a second too late to prevent the blow.

WHAT? YOU’RE STILL REJECTING ME? NO MATTER. YOU WILL JUST THEN BE THE FIRST TO FALL.

Then clarity returns as the confusion and visions end, but in the back of your heads you realize some things. First, as Grigorii noted, the Emissary was coming whether you repaired the orrery or not. Second, having touched its mind, you retain a strange link to a point in the sky above—a point that your minds, touched however briefly by the alien's intellect, realize is the approaching Emissary itself. As long as you and the Emissary live, you will always know the approximate location of the other.

The Emissary is approaching rapidly. It is hurtling straight towards Dustpawn, and will be there in a little over 24 hours.

Knowledge Arcana or Spellcraft DC 20:
Now that your mind has touched the orrery, you know its name. The Orrery of Distant Worlds is not itself evil. It’s a navigation and communication device unlike any you’ve ever seen. It was designed to reach out to beings from other worlds, and to facilitate communications with those beings. Alas, one of the creatures it found was not interested in scientific exchange, but conquest.

You realize that the Emissary, in using the orrery so much to communicate its plans, has somehow linked its mind into the device. Destroying the orrery while the Emissary's mind is linked to it could cause great pain and distress to the creature. This might accelerate its arrival in the region, but would also weaken its powers.

Knowledge Dungeoneering DC 27:
The Emissary is a vespergaunt, an ooze from Aucturn composed entirely of eyes, tentacles and ill will. It is a spiritual conduit for those attempting to contact the old ones. They have a lot of resistances, but aligned weapons will always hurt them.

In the room, you hear sobbing. The Captain is sitting on the floor, with his arms wrapped tightly around himself, rocking back and forth, weeping. "We're back home, aren't we crew? Oh no. I led it back home. What have we done?"

You beat the DC by five on that very difficult check, so you get even more information.

As you think on what you just experienced, you realize that your team got your first taste of the Vespergaunt's Aura of Madness -- a once a day confusion effect. You also know that a Vespergaunt has the ability to siphon spirits. If it slams you, it can literally rip away part of your soul. In game terms, it can give you negative levels. This effect is especially deadly to divine casters, because their souls are ones that the vespergaunt finds especially tasty. Finally, this is a creature of darkness, and you think that it might be especially sensitive to light.

“It’s coming.” Captain Gelvriel looks terrified. “You know what it is... and are going off to meet it? To fight it?” He wavers, especially as he watches all of you pack up and fold the orrery. The planets and their orbits almost melt into each other as they fold from their full size into a light one foot diameter globe that glows with celestial star patterns, hums and is comfortably warm to the touch. The Captain reaches out his hand, and wistfully strokes it, as if he's unwilling to let it go, and then finally drops his hand and looks up at all of you. “Do you want me to join you on the Away Team, or to stay here and monitor the situation from the Bridge?”

You take your leave of the Captain, leaving Gelvriel as a lone figure staring moodily at the inert controls and dirt-caked crystalline windows of the mostly defunct bridge.

Under Grigorii’s hustle, you make good time traveling through the hinterlands, finally arriving back in Dustpawn in the late afternoon. The town stands half deserted as about half the locals are clogging the streets with their goats, their horses, their wagons and wheelbarrows, trying to leave town. Everywhere, stores and stalls are boarded up or shut down, and impatient people are shouting at each other.

“Move your fat ass!”

“You think my donkey’s fat? Wait until you see your lip when I’m done with you!”

Demos Leather Goods is completely shut down, its staff moved out, its goods gone, the windows boarded up with neat signs that state: Closed for a few weeks. Come find us in our convenient new Macridi location! We have tools, supplies, tents -- everything needed to help you resettle in your new home!

The other half of the town is stubbornly staying. One old woman is working her flower garden, and scowls as you walk past. Others are patrolling their homes and businesses with openly displayed weaponry, their eyes narrowing as you walk past.

At the Church of the Dawnflower, Alyssia and Sonarisa are dealing with a line of people with buckets and waterskins to fill, endlessly filling up water stocks for people. Both look exhausted, but Sonarisa stops what she’s doing to thump-flap, thump-flap up to you, much to the annoyance of the next person in line, who shouts, “HEY, I was here first! Don’t let them cut the line!”

Sonarisa eyes are wide as she sees the collapsed and glowing orrery.

Each world is just a bouncing ball
Can we save them before they fall?
Soon the Eye will come and gather all
It approaches. Can you hear the call?

And for once, all of you do, aware in the back of your minds of the Emissary, hurtling ever closer. At the rate it's falling, you think it will be arriving by midday tomorrow. Sonarisa studies your faces, and whatever she sees must satisfy her, because she turns back to the yelling jerk and serenely fills his canteen.

The water winds, the water wends
Hold your family, hold your friends
The sky is falling, know what it portends?
Tomorrow, the world begins... or ends.

This proclamation silences the yelling man, who shuffles off with his water, but it does nothing to calm the line of people waiting for drinking water, who mutter amongst themselves and send terrified glances your way.

The Mineshaft Tavern is doing a booming business when you come in, with many people spending cash like it was nothing, and attempting to drink away their sorrows. Nalan stands in one corner, crossing his arms and acting the watchful role of bouncer. He nods and smiles to all of you as you come in, and shouts, “Lee! Dal! They’re here!”

The small girl bounds up to you, enveloping all of you in fierce hugs. “You’re back! You’re back!” Meanwhile Dalviss comes out from behind the counter and says, “Your rooms are ready if you need them. Come, Lee’s made a good meal, drinks and food on me. Report. Is there any good news at all?”

Dalviss sighs. “The big bad... Why they always have to be big and bad?”

“Eh.” Nalan grunts as he hands out beers to all of you. “Beats swarms.”

“That it does.” Dalviss smiles wanly and then turns to all of you. “Tomorrow, then?” He looks around the tavern, caressing the dark wood of the table, before making a decision. “No. I’m not running. This is my town, and I’ll stay to help with the fight, just like in my Pathfinder days.”

Then he stands on a chair. “Hey you scrubs! Drink up, and then either pack or find a good hidey hole. Things are gonna get rough tomorrow! You hear me, scrubs?”

There’s a mixture of cheers and angry muttering, but the townies finish their drinks and file out. Dalviss gives you space and time to prep. While you make your plans and decide where you’ll be in the town square to greet the Emissary, Dalviss, Nalan and Lee clean up quietly around you, providing snacks and making sure that you have all that you might need.

The next morning, madness sweeps the town. Fights and violence erupt everywhere. Nalan and Dalviss patrol the entrances to the inn, keeping out mad-eyed looters and suddenly violent herds of angry goats that attempt to trample pedestrians. One woman just stands on a street corner, screaming, and you see the Mayor howl as he leaps from roof to roof. Oddly, Dalviss seems cheerful when he charges out the inn door, halberd in hand, spearing goats. He howls himself, in response to the growing violence. “Yeah, this is going to be a real peach of a day, I can tell! I got things in hand here. You go off and deal with this Emissary, and show him what Pathfinders are made of!”

Do you want to place yourselves in the town square, on Slide 9? Also if you have last minute preparations, now’s the time to state them.
