As the early dawn’s light crests over the Wall of Heaven mountain range, the Lantern Lodge is already bustling with activity. The sound of clashing swords echoes in the air from a nearby training area, and a group of Pathfinder agents silently meditates in the front courtyard. The lodge’s doors open, revealing a long corridor and a faint floral aroma wafts gently in the air. Sturdy shelves laden with artifacts from all corners of Tian Xia line the corridor’s walls. Venture-Captain Amara Li emerges from a door labeled “Taldor Room” in a fine cherry-red kimono. “Good morning, Pathfinders. I hope your travels have been safe and enjoyable,” Li says. “Please, come inside.”
The Taldor Room is an opulent meeting space with a solid mahogany table and ornately carved chairs. Its walls are adorned with ornamental weapons and portraits of noble families in resplendent finery. Elegant porcelain teacups and plates sit in front of each chair, and several platters of fruit, cakes, and cheeses occupy the center of the table, surrounding a steaming pot of tea. The venture-captain pours herself a cup of tea and continues, “As I’m sure you are aware, the Grand Lodge was attacked a few months ago. Since then, the Society has been following any and all leads that could help us find and arrest the Aspis criminals behind the assault. From Varisia to Nirmathas to Absalom itself, the Society has successfully gathered a substantial amount of information about Aspis operations. We have combined our own resources with the reports of a turncoat within the Consortium whom we have taken to calling ‘Three Rings’ to create a list of vital Aspis operatives all across Golarion. One in particular, Tseka, lives beneath Goka, in a warren of tunnels and ruins called Undermarket. Specifically, she lives in its deepest levels, known as Deepmarket. Tseka works from the shadows, and makes most of her profits from black market trades. “Deepmarket is a dark and dangerous community of criminals, thieves, and outcasts. Those who don’t know the area or have connections to protect them make easy targets. I recommend using a little subterfuge to help yourselves blend in, and to give Tseka as little time to prepare for your approach as possible.”
The venture-captain places a small wooden chest on the table and says, “To get inside Deepmarket, I propose that you pose as smugglers bringing in a fresh round of contraband. Once there, find Tseka. We know that she has valuable information, so do everything in your power to bring her back alive, and collect whatever documents you find in her base of operations. I do not know where within Deepmarket she resides. Gather what information you can from the locals in Undermarket, and seek out a guide to help you navigate these treacherous waters. Do you have any questions?”

A slight, Taldan man wearing noble finery enters the room, clearing his throat. Ahem--introducing Lord Rolando Pascal, of Oppara,

That's enough, Miguel--we've no time for pleasantries, and everyone here either knows who I am, or doesn't care, a second man says curtly. He too is dressed in finery but also for war in gleaming mithral armor.

Now then, let's get to work, shall we? The singer's usual friendly visage is lined with hurt, and a fire in his eyes for vengeance.

With that, Lord Rolando sets out to see what information he can learn in a matter of a few hours.

It's amazing what a few coppers will buy in this town. I found an entrance to the Undermarket easy enough--a silk shop named "the Cresting Blossom". If we provide a little contraband to the proprietor, we'll be taken to the access tunnel. Unless someone has some poison or the like for trade, we may need to improvise. Perhaps we can pose as slave traders?

Rolando frowns at his own suggestion. I am not overly fond of the idea, but the Aspis is recruiting heavily and I fear time is of the essence. We may also wish to take measures to combat the undead once we enter the Undermarket--there are many lost crypts and burial chambers throughout.

The tall Varisian—who’d been hard-eyed when they found out the location of their new assignment and had become more tight-lipped since arriving—followed VC Li into the Taldor room. He tosses his pack into the corner and lounges against the back wall, listening with what he would have the group think is carelessness, though his gray eyes watch the VC’s face intensely throughout.

Without uncrossing his arms, he nods to Rolando. ”The Taldan’s right from what I hear, though the bit about undead is news to me. I’ve been on my fair share of con jobs in my life, but never as point. The slave-trading gig may be as good an idea as any, unless someone has a better one.” He smirks, ”It wouldn’t even be a stretch for me to play the part of the hired muscle.”

He scratches behind one elf-tipped ear in thought, then shrugs. ”I have a disguise kit in my gear with enough supplies to work on a few of us, but not much more than that. And I’m not much of a disguise maker either. Picking up some magical supplies to help with our disguises and lies could make things a fair bit easier. I got some favors inside the Lodge I can call in, if we need them.”

Scrolls of Disguise Self and Glibness could go a long way here, if ti comes to subterfuge, and I’d be happy to throw down some banked Prestige to pick up a few. Though it’s likely best for someone else to actually put them to use … like our bearded wonder skald here. :)

He cuts his eyes back to the VC, his tone deadpan. "And the Society's pretty serious about her coming in alive, huh?"

A life-size bronze statue of a plump, meditating Tian man tucked discreetly in the corner of the room, behind a folding screen... is not a statue, apparently, as it shifts and yawns with a languid gesture, and opens its-- his-- eyes. A slow smile spreads over the broad, friendly, gold-hued face.

"Brother Jal! How truly wonderful to see you again! The winding paths of our respective destinies have brought us into contact most fortuitously in the shadow of the Wall of Heaven!"

The Tian rises slowly, tucking his voluminous brass-colored robes around himself, graceful despite his comfortably-prosperous belly. He places his hands together at his chest, and bows to the others.

"This humble servant is called Guang; I am honored to serve with each of you."

He listens to the briefing, and agrees for the need to get to work.

When Rolando suggests they prepare for the undead, he nods serenely. "Surely that would be wisdom, Brother Rolando. I have a few vials of holy water and a wand of some usefulness for myself at least.

"Humbly, this one will happily try to seek a local guide, as it is the fortune of this one to be fluent in the tongue of the region."

Amara Li responds to the group a they banter about ideas and concerns. "Most that you will meet are of the unsavory type. Few people venture down there unless they have to. Most of the people who dwell in Undermarket are criminals, thieves, or black market traders, and they try to stay as inconspicuous as possible. I know nothing of the deep races making appearances in the Deepmarket, but of course, anything is possible. In order to assist you and your mission, I will provide you with several items. One is a disguise kit. That will help all of you to blend in within the Deepmarket. I also have two scrolls of disguise self, as well as a chest full of contraband. The chest contains a total of 7 pieces of contraband—a dose of blue whinnis poison, a pistol from Alkenstar, a piece of bawdy artwork depicting a Gokan celebrity, jade unholy symbols of Fumeiyoshi, Lady Nanbyo, and Lamashtu, and an engraved darkwood box containing half a dozen oracular fingerbones smuggled out of Po Li. I would highly advise that once you get below, you find a guide. It is very easy to get lost in the warrens and passages down there, and a local guide could mean the difference between not only success and failure, but also of life and death. Is there any other way in which I can help?"

Please note my post in the Discussion tab about scrolls and potions. At this point, Karos should look like a middle-aged Tien woman.

Guang clears his throat mildly when Rolando begins with a direct question regarding their quarry. He sidles close to Rolando and murmurs discreetly, "My friend, it is perhaps possible that asking directly regarding the personage of a noted criminal is likelier to reach her ears than to give us information. In the east, it is often worthwhile to approach things in a... circular fashion. But we were also advised to seek a local guide, so I shall begin my inquiries in that fashion."

He bows slightly to Rolando, and scans the crowd of surreptitious, shadowy figures for anyone lurking about. With his gold-hued skin covered by cosmetics, and his native Tien features, and his lack of obvious armor or weapons other than a simple walking stick, Guang hopes he can blend in somewhat. He wanders a few dozen feet away, gazing down at the canal and its dinghies. Reaching into his belt pouch, Guang retrieves a handful of silver coins and lets them clink together audibly in his palm until he catches the eye of one of the canal souls.

(Tien) "A moment of your time...? I am but recently arrived from Shokuro.* I am adrift as a small boat, ignorant of the lords and the clans who rule here. Perhaps you might show mercy to a humble traveler, and suggest one who is knowledgeable of the local currents to guide me? I would of course be most willing to pay this guide..."

Diplomacy, with a bribe equal to 1 GP: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

*Not a bluff! Guang's last adventure was in Nesting Swallow, in Shokuro.

You're right, of course, Rolando says earnestly. I can be...overzealous at times, and I am not well-acquainted with local customs. I look to your guidance in these matters while we search.

"Brother, your tongue is far more skilled than my own," Guang responds with another bow to Rolando. "Your mannerisms are such that they decorate the road with flowers, and your demeanor serves as a key to the lock of any door-- or such is the proverb among my people. I do not mean to instruct a master of the path in his way, while I myself am but an apprentice! I only have some humble insights into the way in which the residents of the Dragon Empires may respond, or so I flatter myself. And we surely would not wish for Tseka's eyes and ears among the populace to become apprised of our coming-- thus it follows that we must tiptoe about in the velvet slippers of discretion." He beams.

(Guang is very good at saying simple concepts with lots of probably-unnecessary words.)

The party moves through the market asking questions of the vendors. Every possible item you could think of, and a number you couldn't, are for sale here. The individuals first response to Rolandos direct line of questioning is to shush you, or to move quickly away, but a few step forward, eager to find out who these bold new strangers are. One such steps forward and aggressively asks your business. "You had best be careful.. someone may stick a blade into your wide open mouths. What business have you asking about Tseka?" With this, she brandishes her sword and runs it through a complicated display meant to intimidate and show off her skills.
I need at least three individuals to succeed on a DC 20 Acrobatics, Strength, or CMB check to proceed with this interaction. Please describe what your character is doing.. don't just roll some dice and leave it there.

Guang bows slightly to the person offering bravado and a blade. "Our business is our own, but if you are wishing to proffer that fine blade over as a gift..."

CMB (disarm): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

...he steps forward and smoothly plucks the blade from their new friend's hand. "...then I accept. Of course, if that was not your intent, then may I politely suggest you avoid positioning that blade in our direction? We might mistake it for a threat."

He returns the sword, hilt first.

(I don't have Improved Disarm, so if this is being handled per 'combat' she'd theoretically get an AOO. Though on my 20 that might not matter ;) )

"Hold a moment. I'd see that sword first." says the rogue as he takes it out of Guang's offering hand.

Aramil proceeds to put the sword through a (hopefully) far superior display, ending with the sword poised in front of the urchin's face. "You're right, people had best be careful. This whole 'blade through the mouth' thing could happen to anyone down here. At any rate, your sword seems a bit...unbalanced. Perhaps a quick visit to a smithy might fix that?"

Jal observes a few seconds before inserting himself in between Aramil and the stranger. He draws his Tien blade and follows Aramil's movements, moving in unison like a deadly dance.

(Can a PC who failed one check try again with a different one? Jal's 16 STR is possibly the highest STR in our party, I think, heh.)

Guang beams amiably as Aramil takes the blade and does some impressive flourishes with it.

I don't know the circumstances of Jal being botted.. I am assuming he asked Rolando to post for him. However, if no one else can make the DC and he comes back in time, I will allow him to make his own roll.

Jal said in the discussion thread that he was out until Monday or Tuesday and to bot him. I saw that he has a good acrobatics check so I went for it, as my own is abysmal :-)

that's right.. my mistake. I was posting on the fly and didn't check the discussion tab like I should have.. but there are still others that can attempt this before we do rerolls.
