Sovereign Court

I've posted my history on your list, Kyshkumen (as Wrong John Silver).

What game are you planning to run? I have a handful of characters free right now!

Sczarni

I let the players decide that with this handy little spread sheet Kludde made. Right now it's leaning toward Frost Fur Captives but that can change based on what the other players can play. So go ahead and fill in your spot Derek W.

Thanks! I filled in as best I could. Another group I am in is trying to go from level 1 to 12 with the same cast of characters, so I've marked off a lot of games that we've "booked". We are on our third game, but with another 30 to go we'll just have to see... Still plenty of choices it would seem, though!

Kyshkumen - I just filled in your schedule (nice idea, by the way, I hadn't seen Kludde's version), and am fine with Frostfur Captives.

Sczarni

I was going to shy away from any muti-part scenarios but if everyone is up for it I can run a double of City of Strangers 1 and 2.

Looks like you have three? if you lose someone for part 2 I have done part 1, but not part 2.

I would play those two. What tier are people interested in playing? I may have to create a new character to be sure I'm available, so is low tier okay with folks?

Sczarni

new to PFS and PBP. just signed up on the list. hope to get in a game soon.

Grand Lodge

Not sure if I am up for game signup or not, but I would certainly be interested in City of Strangers. This character is sitting at 0xp.

Posted my info on your tracker Kyshkumen.

That'd be awesome! :)

I'd be in for CoS for sure! What tier?

Sczarni

Sorry Brother Bear and Shifty I was only looking for three more players and I got them, so the game is currently full. Keep an eye on this thread though because I should be recruiting another in 3 weeks or so.

All good mate, glad you got a full crew ready to go :)

Grand Lodge

Hmmm, ok.

- Edit -

Sarcastic and confused banter removed.

Can some explain how the "List" is currently being used? It doesn't appear to me that the idea presented in the earliest posts is still relevant.

Seemed to me that players (re)joining the list after myself were invited to the most recent session while I was asked to wait for the next game.

Do GM's limit their "Tables" to fewer "seats" than the normal PFS limits?

I am not trying to offend or imflame anyone. I truely am seeking understanding in a new realm that I am unfamiliar with.

The entire system revolves around me being an inherently chaotic creature.

I initially set up the list to have a quick pool of players to recruit from, and to make sure everyone got a turn in a game. Now, since there can be quite a bit of waiting time between players putting their names on the list and me recruiting them, players may no longer be interested, or have disappeared form the boards altogether.

When I call for a game, hit rates are typically below 50%: for every two players that I call, i get less than one response (which may be passing over). What I usually do is call about twelve players from the list, see who responds, seat those who are interested and then - because I don't want to keep them waiting for too long - just do an open recruitment on this thread. This may allow people to jump the queue, but in the end everybody on the list should get his turn.

This is how I do the recruiting. Other GMs have been so kind as to recruit here, and some use the same system, some do an open recruiting, so do a hybrid form. Some GMs will PM you, other will not. I'm not enforcing any particular system: I appreciate their efforts in helping me reduce waiting times, and the less I hamper them with restrictions the more likely people are to get a game.

The master list of players is a complete mess right now, and it could be better - my apologies for that. It would probably be in a better shape if I took more time administrating it, but frankly I think it's more fun to run an extra table. I think that helps to offset the inefficiency somewhat.

tl;dr: Other GMs do as they like. I recruit from the list by pming the first X or so players, so if your name is on the list you'll eventually get a PM for a game.

Threw my hat in the ring (filled out the spreadsheet)

I have a few characters I've made up recently (lvl 1) who can fill almost any slot needed :D (character numbers 1-4 are all lvl5+ 5-23 are lvl 1/2 && 15 & 23 are not legal *yet* (waiting for Gen Con))

The way I recruit is I will call out two blocks of six to 5 players over about 6 days. If I fail to make a table I switch to open recruitment to fill the slots. Any players that do not reply at all are considered inactive and are removed from the list. I do it this way to clear part of the list but not waiting 2-3 weeks to start a game. Table sizes vary in PbP as more players can seriously slow down the game. I refuse to run seven, I can be talked into six sometimes, but I feel comfortable at five.

@Brother Bear -

I have been on the list for... 3 weeks now I think? Give or take a few days... I was about 50 places from the top when I started, now at 27.

If you pay attention to this thread somewhat regularly (say, about as often as you might post in a game) you will get called. I am surprised how fast I have moved up so far.

Grand Lodge

Returned my name to the list and am keeping an eye on the thread.

@Kyshkumen: I think when I read your post about looking for three more, I thought that was in addition to the names already on the tracker you linked.

I guess I had hoped that PbP games would pick up a little faster than most normal games, but it seems to be about the same pace. I have been scouring multiple recruiting areas for the past week and thought I should have had better luck.

Guess my times to be on are less coordinated with most of the people doing PbP since I am actually in a more common time zone. Looks like a lot of posts occur while I am busy at work in the morning, or while I am sleeping at night. I had gotten rather frustrated.

Thank you all for the advice and replies.

Most of the ones I have available are the repeat ones like confirmation, first steps, fallen fortress and a few others. I will keep everyone here informed should I start another group.

The Exchange

How does this work if you were recently selected for a game, completed it, and are ready for another game. Should we post here again for a bump?

You just enter your name at the bottom of the queue again

Scarab Sages

I just made my first PFS Character. I am not even sure what I am doing. I know how to make a character and I followed the pdf. When it comes to pathfinder, I know what I am doing. However, I am newer to PbP and brand new to PFS. I would like to have a fun first time PbP PFS experience, so, I am adding to the queue.

Sczarni

So Paizo has this really bad habit of using very similar names for things. This causes a lot of confusion when it comes to things like "race trait", "racial trait" and the adopted trait. The adopted trait lets you pick a race trait from another race. You went with Elf which would allow for a trait like Forlorn or Warrior of Old. It does not let you pick racial traits like bow proficiency from a races stat block. Clear as mud?

Scarab Sages

Got it, I actually was going to open a forum question about that. Now I don't have to, awesome. Accept lame! Now I don't get a trait that is totally as powerful as a feat. Which is fair, but lame.

Liberty's Edge

Welcome and have a blast!

PFS isn't too much different from a PF home game.
No evil
No crafting
You have to be good at something, but I don't suggest specializing to the point where you can't do anything except your specialty.
Other than that, if you don't start picking from some of the really weird and wild controversial issues, you should be fine.

Also don't get too bent out of shape over the build at level 1. You can completely remake the build anytime before you run your first time as a level 2 character.

Having said that, the build looks fine other than K's correction. Note: if you are in the Andoran PFS faction you can take the trait Hunter's Eye to get proficiency with a bow. Then you could take a different feat.

Few suggestions (but definitely not mandatory)
1) I would ditch the scimitar and long bow (replace with a club and sling) for the first scenario. For one thing you should always have a blunt weapon (club) at low levels for the very common skeletons. For another the club works with shillelagh, which can be a game changer even at mid levels.

2) Have some cash left over to buy gear after you hear the mission description. Sometimes it is very obvious that a few air crystals, alchemist fire, acid, or holy water will be incredibly useful. After a couple levels I try to always have some of the consumables on hand. Consumables are much more useful (practically necessary) in PFS since the group might have zero members with some given capability.

3) Always have at least one cure potion on hand. Tell the other PC's, "If I go unconscious, pour this down my throat!" Every couple of levels, I would suggest upgrading it from a light, to moderate, to serious, and finally to critical.

4) With your first 2 prestige points buy a wand of cure light wounds. I feel everyone should have a wand of cure light wounds or infernal healing at all times and all levels.

5) If you are proficient with a bow; spend your second 2 prestige points on a masterwork, composite, +2 strength rated bow.

6) Unless everyone in the group is brand new characters (meaning not a single wand of CLW) I would not prep any cure light wounds spells. Rely on the wands. Shillelagh, long strider, entangle, and magic fang are much more useful to you at almost any time. Consider leaving 1 slot unprepared. Depending upon the mission briefing or things that happen, you may decide that X spell would be really great to have. To bad no one prepared it. And 15 minutes later, whamoo! You have it.

7) Mounted combat doesn't come up too often in PFS (much of it is indoors or under ground). So some would recommend against the mounted combat feat especially at low level. However, some druids plan on riding a large animal companion into combat whenever possible. So it could still be a good move depending upon your plans.

There are a couple of threads each with some very good advice on PbP and PFS. The search function doesn't work from my work PC, but maybe one of the other folks here can provide some links.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Just go look at Painlord's profile page. He has a whole list he's done along with Doomed Hero's guide to play by post.

Hi! I have two PFS-ready characters, and I would like to get either into a game.

So anything special I need to do to get added to a game or waitlist?

At the top of this page is a link to a spread sheet, enter yourself there.

Where is says ... Enter your PC in the -->list<--, and

OK, hopefully there will be no ovjections to another GM recruiting here!

I would like to run scenario 4-15, The Cyphermage Dilemma. I'llI'll give the next 6 on the list about 24 hours to chime in here with their interested characters after that it will be opened to everyone!

A note on my posting rates - usually can only get one per day, but most of my games have taken six weeks or less with this.

GM Derek W wrote:

If history stays true, the other GMs are grateful to have additional GMs recruiting. I know as a player, I sure am!

What level is the Cyphermage Dilemma? Just want to know in case my name comes around...

@Papasteve08,

Per Paizo PFS Website, the cyphermage dilemma appears to be designed for levels 1-5 ( (Tier 1–5; Subtiers 1–2 and 4–5).

I know I've got a level 1 toon ready and waiting to play in the Cyphermage Dilemma, if there is an opening. I'm on the queue list as well (approx. #18 at the moment)

Yes, it's for levels 1-5. First up, I am looking for the following players if you're interested:

PatheticWretch
Gucci Flipper Coon
Csy
OnelungBL
Crashwheeler
The Little King

Please respond by tomorrow night (for me, that is! I'm in U.S. MTN Time Zone. You have a full 24 hrs from now).

The Exchange

So for situations like this, does the GM typically message the prospective players or just wait on the thread here for responses?

Sczarni

Depends on the GM. I don't send out PMs for recruitment and Kludde does if he has time. Your best bet would be to check in on a regular basis. This can also help as games will go to open recruitment if the GM gets a lot of non responses from the list.

Yes, I can say that it does vary by GM a bit. This is my first game recruiting from this particular list.

So far I've heard from Crashwheeler.

So recruitment for #4-15: The Cyphermage Dilemma is now OPEN. One spot reserved, 5 more available.

Please check in with your PFS-legal character, level 1-5, in the discussion thread.

First five to post in will be accepted. I reserve the right to review your chronicle sheets. I had a bit of a mix-up during the last PBP gameday, so please have scans available. Thanks!

Sczarni

Is there a way to get this thread into my campaign tab so that it is easier to watch?

Posting in the gameplay thread should do the trick.

Pathfinder Adventure, Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Two of my characters are back on the list.

I'm starting recruitment for the next table, so calling

Nazard
PatheticWretch
Mighty Beowulf
Gucci Flipper Coon

OnelungBL

- If you want to join the game, give a shout and go to >this spreadsheet<, enter your name (replace 'Player X' with your name) and follow the instructions on the instructions tab.
- If you do not want to join, but stay on the list for another game, let me know in this thread.

Scarab Sages

Just signed up, Thanks.

PatheticWretch checking in! I would love to play, and have filled out the spreadsheet. Now THAT is some organization!

Thanks for running the show, btw!

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Filled out my slot, thanks Kludde!

Silver Crusade

Filled in! Thanks for the PM, I've gotten out of the habit of checking this...

Liberty's Edge

I added myself into your list as player5. Or was that instruction just for the folks in your call?

Darn, on re-reading it looks like it was.

Liberty's Edge

Filled out my slot, ty DM Kludde.

--- Table full ---
1. OnelungBL
2. PatheticWretch
3. cartmanbeck
4. The Little King
5. Crashwheeler
6. Nazard

----

We have six responses, which completes the table. I'm just waiting for everyone to fill out the scenario selection sheet. Once that's done, I'll post the link to the campaign here.

Even if you've already filled out your preferences, please have a look at the sheet again: I've expanded it and made season 0 and 1 available as well (by request). It seems season 5 is out of the question, since every scenario has been played by at least one of the players. There's still some hopefuls in season 4, as well as further back (I personally prefer newer scenarios, but I'm willing to run anything).
