DM Kludde |
There, in the distance, ploughing through the sleeting rain, we catch the first glimpse of our heroes. Starting out in Absalom, the city at the centre of the world, the first heard the rumours of the Fallen Fortress, and old - some say ancient - siege fortress, one of many located in the Cairnlands.
Sealed shut by strong magic wards and forgotten spells, nobody has been able to breach the fortress to get inside. Until an earthquake struck the land and the walls crumbled, leaving open what had been closed to civilisation for so long. Excitement, adventure, treasure, prestige, each of the heroes have their own reasons for moving out here. Who can tell?
Yet here they are. The ruined siege castle now being called the Fallen Fortress rises out of the churned earth of the Cairnlands. No doors or windows mar the otherwise smooth expanse of the tower's walls. The tower is quatrefoil in plan; its eastern wing has largely collapsed, exposing the interior floors to the open air. Only the topmost level seems whole, though its eastern portion hangs precariously over the mountain of rubble left by the collapse. At ground level, the rubble frames a gaping hole in the side of the building that provides access to the tower's darkened interior.
The heroes are about 500 meter aways from the tower.
Aliben Dunekeeper |
Aliben had been quite talkative on the journey to the fortress, mainly because there was another elf traveling with him, but when he say the structure first hand he was silent. This is just another search of ancient buildings like I have done before. Always full of creatures protecting things they know nothing about...
"Let's proceed carefully friends. No telling what is inside."
Aetherys Dawnblade |
Aetherys is a lithe elven girl bearing long, well-kept blond hair flowing down to her waist. Some of it is braided, with small clasps respresenting the Dawnflower. Her eyes are deep blue, and she hardly ever blinks. Aetherys is obviously passionate about her art, losing herself in trances of sheer devotion to her goddess, but is otherwise cold in her relationships with people. Somehow, it's as if only her dances and the amount of faith she'd put in them mattered.
Her body is covered with a chain shirt and silken breeches of azure and silver. She's bearing a rapier at her side. Glancing at the ruins, her face is hard to read, and there's no telling what she's looking for in those ruins. She nods to her elven companion.
Agreed. This is a chance for us to prove ourselves.
Negi Othollo |
A black-furred wolf padded up to the others. Doesn't look like anyone else is around from the outside, The dusky-skinned Halfling said as he dismounted, giving his friend a short rest. so looks like our claim is so far unsullied. Who knows what's still in there, though. He turned to the others, flashing a wide grin that, along with his expressive black eyes, made him look far more innocent than he really was. So who's first?
Radnor Acton |
"That sounds like our cue, right Nuzzle?" Radnor says, his voice a cheerful bellow as he strides forward accompanied by his bizarre companion, a creature that looks like a wingless dragon covered in downy blue fur. The burly young man holds a battered lance and wears a wolfish grin as he strides forward towards the hole,
"But first better make with the magic! Dleifecrof! Hcrotlevart!" He chants the later part weaving his wingers and slapping first Nuzzle's furry shoulders then his lance. Its not obvious what magic has been worked on the eidolon, but the lance begins to glow with a soft opalescent light.
"Make way villainy, hero coming through!"
To quote Minsc. Casting Mage Armor on Nuzzle, and Light on the lance.
Xan-Tei Shun |
The Tien-Shu man dressed in simple light-colored cotton clothing was silent for the duration of the journey. He seemed to be more preoccupied with assuring that his bow was ready for any actions that might be needed than he was at making conversation. Upon reaching the sight of the tower, the man named Xan-Tei lifted his head slightly and muttered Hmm... but then said no more.
Your first test has come. Trust in your new companions but trust your own skill more. Do not be afraid to test your limits but not at the expense of others.
Renli Rumblebelly |
The dust sits lightly on the dark leather armor worn by this wiry halfling. Sharp featured for his kind, there is a taunting, almost devilish glint in his eyes. His garb and gear suggest an explorer used to the road, though he wears it with the panache of a seasoned noble.
With a wide smile across his face, the shaggy haired halfling laughs. "Ladies and Gentlemen, our day has come. Time to delve once more into the dangerous depths. Be prepared for fear, foes, and fury. But in the end, there will be a reward. Stick together, keep your spirits up, and remember, its better to be lucky than wise!" Striding forward, Renli thrusts his walking stick (club) in the air, as though commanding a charge.
DM Kludde |
Could everybody please list a short line of stats in their header line (Like Aetherys, Aliben, Renli and Radnor have already done to some extent). Cram in as much stats as you can (and include the companion), that will save me a lot of time looking up. Please also make sure your profile contains complete information (so I don't have follow two link to find the info - these airport internet connection are sloooow). Sorry if that means duplicating your char sheet...
Drawing closer to the tower, the heroes hear a brief howl, followed by the emergence of three starved-looking dogs.
Die shower!
Dogs: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Ali: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Aet: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Neg: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Rad: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Eid: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
X: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Ren: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Renli, Aliben and Aethrys and Negi move first. Then the dogs, then Radnor/Eidolon, and Xan-Tei.
For expeditiousness, you can make your actions conditional ('if dog 3 is still alive ..., else ...'). You can have as many conditions (as long as you are clear about them) as you want - but please hide your rolls in spoiler tags if you have conditions. I'll give my own interpretation if things are ambiguous - your mileage may vary :)
Aliben Dunekeeper |
Aliben, not unused to creatures inhabiting desert ruins, loads a crossbow bolt and takes aim at the closest dog.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Negi Othollo |
Cousins of yours, Jon? Negi says to his mount as he readies his lance. They don't look friendly! He says to the others as he spurs his wolf forward, charging towards the dog on the left.
Charge: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Lance Attack: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 Doubled on charge
Aetherys Dawnblade |
Aetherys moves forward instinctively, wishing to protect the weaker members of the group. She draws her blade, as quick as a flash.
Rabid dogs! Let them approach and mow them down!
Moving in front of Ragnor, and drawing her rapier.
Renli Rumblebelly |
Chuckling lightly, Renli draws his bow and knocks an arrow, "seems like the trouble is meeting us before we even get inside," and fires.
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
DM Kludde |
Aliben stoically loads his crossbow, while Negi navigates the rubble of his Wolf. Trying to gain momentum for a lance, the rubble hinders movement so much that the intended charge Negi had in mind does not really materialise. A 'twack' sounds just before the wolf comes into range, hitting the southernmost left dog in the side just before it gets skewered on Negi's lance.
Aetherys manages to block the path of the dog that was running for Radnor, while the last dog is moving for Xan-Tei.
Dog NE vs Xan-Tei (AC 15): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Dog SW vs Aetherys (AC18): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Critical confirmation on Xan-Tei (AC 15): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Damage on Xan-Tei, critical unconfirmed: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
While Aetherys is having little trouble fending of the wild dog's bites, Xan-Tei is not so lucky as he incurs a nasty bite.
Charging is unfortunately not possible in difficult terrain. I was assuming that 'left' was left as viewed from Negi. The westernmost dog in the map would have made little sense in terms of charging even if the terrain had been easy.
Xan-Tei and Radnor are next, then the other part members
Radnor Acton |
Radnor steps forward shifting his grip on his lance so instead of using it properly he is using it as a club, even as Nuzzle races over the rubble to position himself behind the wolf that wounded Aetherys, relying upon his mage armor and thick hide to protect him as the canine takes the chance to snap, but finds its teeth thwarted by the invisible armour.
Once in position Radnor and Nuzzle strike, with club and claw respectively. As the dog twists to dodge Nuzzle's claw swipe it turns into the thick wood of Radnor's lances hand guard and collapsing as teeth, fur, and gore spray outward.
"Get out of here you flea ridden curs!"
Dog AOO vs Nuzzle: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Radnor flank vs Dog: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Nuzzle flank vs Dog: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Hope you feel the use of a lance as a club is viable, I'm envisioning him using the hand guard as the clubs head, and a club is a free item that is simply described as "a blunt object usually made of wood". If not Radnor moves behind Negi and uses his lance, then Nuzzle will move around behind the remaining dog.
DM Kludde |
I'm afraid I will have to rule against using a lance as club. A club is a blunt object made of wood, but built for the purpose of being a club. A lance would simply be too long and cumbersome for that purpose. I'm going to with plan B.
Randor will move SW-W (all through diff to be 1 square east of Negi
Nozzle will move NE-N-N-N-NW-SW (last move through difficult terrain) to be 1 square north of the NE dog.
I'm keeping the attack rolls, benefit of doubt - will probably not do so next time.
Radnor Attack (keeping roll): 19 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Nuzzle Attack (keeping roll): 9 = 9
Following behind Negi, Radnor also bring up a formidable lance attack, skewering another dog. This one, also, does not live to bark the tale.
Xan-Tei Shun |
Xan-Tei, obviously lost in his own thoughts, seems a little slow to react to the actions of the hounds. You must pay attention to everything around you! Be aware of all or your life will be lost before you even begin! After taking a nasty bite from the creature, the monk will take a 5' step back and fire two arrows at the hound!
Flurry 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Flurry 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
I believe I can take a 5' step and still use Flurry of Blows, if not then I'll use the second roll for my next attack this fight, if there is one.
Renli Rumblebelly |
after Xan-Tei and Radnor act; move NE 1 square, N 1 square
Seeking a better view of his target, Renli moves away and up from the company so that he mightly clearly shoot past his allies. Targeting the mangy mutt striking at the monk, Renli calls out, "Desna, they call you Lady Luck, let this shot strike true" and fires.
-4 attacking into melee; swift action activate Archaeologist's Luck for +2 to attacks, skill checks, and ability checks
Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 4 - 4 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 4 - 4 + 2 = 14 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
DM Kludde |
Flurry counts as a full attack, IIRC, so you get a five-foot step.
From here on, if a roll is rolled without being used, a new roll must be made (that's right, you would lose the natural one! I am that harsh!)
Xan-Tei spring into action and fires a rapid succession of arrow. The remaining dog lets out a yelp as the first arrow hits.
Radnor Acton |
You can only take a 5-foot-step if your movement isn't hampered by difficult terrain or darkness.
Xan-Tei Shun |
I wasn't thinking the grey spots were difficult, I thought the white areas (the rocks) were. If not then I would move back as far as I could and fire once.
DM Kludde |
Admitting it is somewhat of a grey area, I considered the spot on the right (partially yellow) as normal, the spot Xan-Tei was standing on (and the one on the south) as difficult. I also counted the Eidolon's move this way. The map isn't terribly clear in this respect. I would add markers to the map for difficult terrain, but it seems to combat is almost over. I'll leave the move as it is.
Renli, Negi, Aliben and Aetherys are up
Aetherys Dawnblade |
Aetherys moves to flank the remaining dog with Radnor's eidolon.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 111d6 ⇒ 1
Piercing the air with her swift rapier, she nonetheless misses her target.
DM Kludde |
I missed Renli's move there, must have slipped through.
Renli lands a direct hit as Aetherys follows with a swift demonstration of rapier moves, even though she does not manage to land a hit.
Aliben and Negi are next
Aliben Dunekeeper |
Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3
I was going to cast Jolt. Looked it up online to find that it is actually not PFS legal? So I guess i'll instead have acid splash.
Aliben releases a hand from his crossbow as he is unwilling to risk hitting one of his new friends. He could be much more precise with his magic however and chants the phrase for conjuring a splash of acid, making a throwing motion it flies through the air towards where he is pointing, the last dog standing.
Negi Othollo |
Leaving the lance in the corpse of his first kill, Negi draws his sword as Jon advances on the final dog. They strike together in a flash of steel and ivory
Negi: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
shortsword: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Jon: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
bite: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
If/when the dog is dead:
Well that was a shame. Negi said sadly as he dismounts and recovers his lance. He then sets about dragging the carcasses away from the entrance.
DM Kludde |
And so we look at the final moments of battle. Negi rides up to the final dog and delivers a vicious stab. Demoralized by so much pain, the dog flees.
AOO Nuzzle: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
And gets ripped to shreds by Radnor's Eidolon.
Combat over
As Negi moves the bloodied corpses out of the way, the path to the entrance is free.
As the excitement of battle fades, our heroes start noticing the rain again. The tower has collapsed on the eastern side, leaving bare several floors on that side. Of the ground floor, the eastern room is completely open and easily accessible. Two doors are visible.
DM Kludde |
Aetherys, shall I assume that you recast light whenever it runs out?
Aliben Dunekeeper |
Aliben walks into the semicircle like entrance and casts Detect Magic on the doors and looks inside if nothing is detected.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
DM Kludde |
A brief maneuver, and Aliben casts detect magic. Although the entire fortress radiates a faint aura of warding magic, there is no particular signal from either of the doors.
Aliben did not specify which door to enter first: 1 for N, 2 for S: 1d2 ⇒ 1
As Aliben open the northern door and peeks inside, the light cast on Aetherys rapier illuminates the room, casting long shadows.
The northern wing of the tower seems to have escaped the worst effects of the collapse of the tower, but rubble still litters the floor and everything is covered in a thick layer of stone dust. Thick cobwebs cloak the ceiling and hang down the walls like gossamer tapestries. A single archway stands open in the southwest wall.
Radnor Acton |
Radnor moves forward towards the archway, glowing lance illuminating his way and brushing aside the cobwebs, Nuzzle at his side. Then the eidolon moves through the archway, as Radnor stage whispers,
"Look at this dust we must be the first ones to have set foot here in decades!"
Renli Rumblebelly |
Stepping forward into the forgotten chamber, Renli looks around in awe, taking in all the ancient architecture. Pulling down cobwebs as he proceeds, he scans the room, seeking anything of note.
perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
DM Kludde |
As Radnor moves into the room, his lance illuminates the dust, spider webs and rubble that lie inside. Also illuminates is the web that is thrown towards him.
Perception for Radnor: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3
Thrown Web: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Radnor did not see the web coming, and is entangled by it.
Meanwhile, Nuzzle at his side is also caught in surprise.
Perception for Nuzzle: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Aliben, who spent some time peering through the doorway, and Xan-Tei, with ever-keen senses managed to spot the spider as it threw the web, but were not in time to react. Renli, being already in the room, also notices the spider in time.
A big, fat spider lurks on a web near the ceilin.
Radnor is entangled. Only Aliben and Xan-Tei and Renlo are not surprised and may act. Combat order: Aliben, Renli and Xan-Tai, then Aetherys, then the spider, then the rest
The area marked by the grey border is difficult terrain

Perc, XT: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Xan-Tei Shun |
Still suffering from the bite of the animal from the previous fight, Xan-Tei stays toward the back of the party. Upon seeing a new enemy confronting his companions, the monk will slide to his left and let loose two more arrows toward the offending spider! I forgot the +1 for Point Blank Shot last time, not this time
Bow 1: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 = 8
Arrow 1: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Bow 2: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 1 = 19
Arrow 2: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Aetherys Dawnblade |
Already stating my action for the round, just in case.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 151d6 ⇒ 4
OR
If she can't get into melee with the spider for any reason, she'll cast daze (will DC 13) instead.
Renli Rumblebelly |
if we are within 2 rounds after the last combat ended, Archaeologist's Luck is still in effect; if not I will spend a swift action to activate another 'round' of it
Shocked by the webbing shooting through the air, Renli's attention is drawn toward the ceiling where he spots the hideous spider. Stepping toward the side (5 foot step SW) "Spiders... I hate spiders." Knocking another arrow, he fires at the foul creature.
Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
DM Kludde |
Xan-Tei, through all the confusion and cobwebs, stays calm and manages to land an arrow in one of the arachnids eight eyes.
1. Aliben
2. Aetherys, who has a move ready
3. Seven-eyes
4. All others. For expedience I will group Aetherys in here as well.
Map updated, it is now listed under campaign info
Radnor Acton |
"What the hells?" Radnor splutters, spitting strands of web as he glances around trying to adjust to the situation at hand.
For future reference DM Kludde will Radnor be able to reach the spider with his lance? I guess I'm asking if it is in the top of three squares, or the top of four. And if its the later could he attempt to jump up and hit it or some such, with appropriate speed penalties for being entangled?
Aliben Dunekeeper |
"Lookout! On the ceiling! Spider!" Ali had several experiences with spiders before and they were deadly. He proceeds to retrieve a torch and light it, setting the web on fire.
Not sure how many actions that takes so let me know. Just wanting to burn the spider down not free or burn radnor accidentally.
Renli Rumblebelly |
"Blasted wriggling mess of legs", drawing another arrow, Renli fires at the giant spider.
forgot to add my Archaeologist's Luck in the last roll after declaring it active - whoops
Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 2 = 21 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
DM Kludde |
Aliben grab a torch and proceeds to light it.
Lighting is a full round action, so that would have to be next round
Aetherys moves into the room, and finds the spider out of reach. She quickly casts daze before the spider can move.
Will save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
The spider remains stationary near the ceiling.
Radnor, the web is anchored at the floor, so it hinders movement. You can try to break free, though
Renli shoots another arrow, and manages to hit the spider. Negi switches weapons.
Spider total damage: 10
Heroes' round, Renli and Negi have moved
Xan-Tei Shun |
Content with his position the monk fires two more arrows toward the spider.
Arrow 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Arrow 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3
DM Kludde |
To be clear on the lighting bit: lighting the torch has been done in this round (retrieving as a swift action, then lighting as a full action). Next round Aliben can start torching stuff.
Xan-Tei, with unrelenting speed, delivers another direct hit. The spider is still hissing and spitting.
Damage 13
Aliben, Aetherys, Radon, Nuzzle are up
Radnor Acton |
Radnor growls, nodding to Nuzzle as the pair ready themselves to attack any foes that come close enough.
Radnor readied entangled: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 - 2 = 8 Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Nuzzle readied: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Aliben Dunekeeper |
Throw torch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
With burning torch in hand Aliben throws it up into the cobwebs, hoping to force the spider down where swords could finish it off.
DM Kludde |
Aliben gets in a good throw, and manages to burn a whole side of the spiderweb. Even though the critter itself managed to move to an undamaged piece of web in time, large part of the webbing have been consumed by the torch.
Treating the torch as a ranged touch attack
Radnor, please hide readied attacks in spoiler tags, or let me roll them for you.
Atherys is next, then the spider - maps are in the signature under MotFF - Table 1
DM Kludde |
A creature hit by daze is immune to its effects for a minute. Care to amend?
