The sun bears down oppressively through the jungle’s humidity, causing the air to shimmer and lending an even greater feeling of otherworldliness to the Mwangi city of Nantambu. Aya Allehe enters the sweltering room in the local Pathfinder Lodge with a worn and harried look in her eyes. “Thank you for agreeing to meet here on such short notice,” she begins. “As you may already know, the venture-captain of this lodge, Nieford Sharrowsmith, has been away for several weeks heading an expedition into the interior of the expanse. A week ago, I received a letter addressed to Sharrowsmith from our agent working in the Aspis Consortium-controlled city of Bloodcove, Malika Fenn. The letter appeared to be a routine report, though I recognized that it hid an encoded message that describes an impending Consortium expedition up the Vanji River, planned to depart within the week.

“Malika additionally informed us that this expedition’s aims are of great concern to the Pathfinder Society. She has collected substantial intelligence to this effect but is unable to get the information out of the city for fear that the Consortium will detect and intercept it. To make matters worse, Venture- Captain Sharrowsmith has failed to check in with any other Pathfinder contacts in the region or send back any messages during his own expedition. The timing of these two events is too convenient for my liking, so even though I am only overseeing this lodge in Sharrowsmith’s absence, I ask that you travel into the lion’s den to retrieve the information that Malika has gathered on this expedition so that we can find out if it is connected to Sharrowsmith’s disappearance. Malika has indicated that she left a message for us in the Witchlight Inn that will help us find her information, so head there first.

Yeah! Bloodcove, baby!

“Though these are grim circumstances, they also present us with an opportunity. Once you have infiltrated the city, try to sabotage the Consortium’s preparations for the expedition. You won’t be able to stop it completely, but you can at least buy us some time to determine its nature and formulate a response. I also want you to make some inroads for the Society in the city. Gaining the ability to move agents and supplies through Bloodcove more easily would be a massive boon for our operations in the Expanse. I have some information on some disenfranchised citizens of Bloodcove who may be up to the task.

Finally, gather some intelligence of your own. Talk to the people of Bloodcove and see how complete the Aspis’s control over the populace is. Report to me any groups or people of influence who may be sympathetic to our cause and support us in future moves against the Consortium. Once you’re done, get out of the city. Leaving in a different way than you arrived tends to be best.”

Ouro, Jacques:

Though ostensibly ruled by the elected Grand Admiral, fiercely competitive trading houses wield the genuine power behind Bloodcove politics. The Aspis Consortium currently dominates the political and economic scene.

The trading houses brutally crush any criminal organizations that interfere with their business. As a result, most of Bloodcove’s criminal activity revolves around exports (such as the drug trade) or else focuses on the poorer citizens. The local guard only investigates crimes if well paid for the service, leaving most of the city subject to vigilante law.

The Aspis Consortium watches the local Pathfinder chapter house constantly. Foreign Pathfinders who visit it frequently disappear.

You'd be wise to choose a disguise, and make sure you are not identified as pathfinders. You might want to disguise as bounty hunters, or something else that explains your presence in the city. Here's some forged bounty postings.

You'll find an ally in Novaria of House Cartahegn. The society has dealt with her before, at the time of the Azlanti Ridge debacle.

“In her message, Malika mentioned that she suspected that her cover had been compromised, and she has gone to ground in order to stay safe. Any direct contact with her could further endanger both her life and her role in the city.”

If you're heading into Bloodcove, I'll need to know what cover story the party is using. Depending on the type of disguise you use, you'll roll different kinds of checks to remain unnoticed by the Aspis.

You can have different disguises, but it will increase the DC of moving around without drawing attention. A PC will have to make the checks himself. You'll have to make checks at various points in the game, and your cover story determines what checks you'll have to make.(e.g. Bounty hunter would require either Intimidate or Disguise checks). A PFS GM is allowed to apply bonuses for particularly good stories, and in my book having an actual piracy infamy score qualifies.

"No reason a pirate crew wouldn't have a good guide on hand, especially if we were doing coastal raids or hunting rumours of lost and hidden treasures, so we'd have a few odd hands on our manifest"

Who'd know if we were pathfinders, Pirates are notoriously disloyal and sail under different flags of convenience as often as they empty their wine."

As the Raven sails into the port of Bloodcove, the strong, dense, humid air competes with the filthy stench of stale water and rotting wood. The entire city is one big hodgepodge of boardwalks, houses on stilts, wooden walkways going up and down and no discernible plan to the maze of wood.

Arriving is the easy part, but eyes and ears is what the city is made of. Moving ashore without drawing attention - there's the challenge.

At various points in the adventure, I'll be asking for an awareness check. This is a check each of you will have to make, to determine the kind of attention you're drawing. There's two options: a regular check, or a check to confound spies and create false trails (for which the DC is 10 higher). The second type may negate a failed check (of another PC) of the first type.

Each of you, roll me an awareness check (Either Disguise or Bluff, though I will accept Prof(Sailor) for the first roll)

Without making a point if it, Blackjack asks about for what Inn is where, getting the directions to a couple, and making like any of them could be his destination, but it is the Witchlight he seeks out...

He also asks about for a lead on some provisioners who might be able to suply an expedition up the coast.

The sun starts to rise as Blackjack asks around, spreading rumours as much as collecting them, until he happens upon Kelvin Soapymouth, a peg-legged, worn-out hallooing pirate that seems to have some reputation around Bloodcove. Out-of-town, eh? Clueless? Looking for a kip to drown your sorrows in a mug of strong bob? I'll pay ya the music, cause she ain't paying fer herself, if ya catch my drift. It's ere o'er there...

Sure enough, the old pirate's instructions are true. The dim atmosphere inside the Witchlight contrasts sharply with the bright Mwangi sun. The sour stench of unwashed bodies and stale beer fills the air as a throng of warehouse workers, ship crews, and less reputable folk take their morning meals. The innkeeper stands behind the bar chatting amiably with patrons, while servers hurry between tables.

DC 25 Perception or Sense Motive:

Even if this place is supposedly thin of pickpockets - as that pirate claimed - there's plenty of spying going on. The servers hover near certain tables and often take circuitous routes to their customers in order to overhear conversations.

The bounty board, hangs prominently near the entrance to the common room and is covered in over a dozen listings detailing various fugitives, missing persons, or unfortunate souls who’ve simply made wealthy enemies. One particular posting on the board immediately stands out from the rest.

Just as the party discovers the message, the inn’s door slams open with a bang, and the room goes quiet. A tall, slender Bonuwat man with long but neatly kept dreadlocks wearing long robes and a brightly colored necklace of beads steps inside (Also see map). Two Bekyar men accompany him and leer menacingly at bystanders. He draws a rolled piece of parchment from his robe, opens it, and announces in a clear voice, “We have ten jobs available for today, working the warehouse at dock twenty-two. Any strong, able-bodied person is welcome to see me for assignment.” He then moves to a table near the door and sits down, and a line begins to form in front of him.

After the recruiter has made his offer, Cacumattus says, louder, "Aye, I already drank me spoils from that last clipper, could use a few more coins to tide me."

Rhanloi is not so interested in manual labor on the docks...his hands were trained for delicate arcane gestures and not for brutish lifting of harsh fabrics and materials! He would rather search for the missing pendant, but not at the risk of becoming separated from the group. Maybe if he played the part of 'mage looking for special item who hired the pirates' he could find a way to stay with the lot and not do any actual labor...

Thinking for a moment, Ceobryrn waits until one of the nosy servers pass close before commenting to Rhanloi "This is a long way to come after for a bounty, but then the rouge bard did knock up the Duke's bride and then then made off with duke's favorite horse not to mention a few pricey trinkets. Let's hope we find him before his bounty becomes general knowledge here."

The ranger looks over the bounty board out of professional curiosity.

Yes, of course you can do the work. The pay is pretty good for this job too. What name do I sign up?

Anybody trying to make sense of the bounty posting?

DC 10 Intelligence:

Terra Fas DeQuere is not any language known in the Inner Sea. Also the reward amount is both too small for such a job and strangely specific.

Higher rolls reveal more clues, though you earn respect points if you solve it without :-).
