As a clock chimes the hour in the Grand Lodge of Absalom, Ambrus Valsin opens the door to admit his guests then resumes his seat next to a grey-eyed woman wearing the robes of an academic. “Please seat yourselves quickly so we can begin. This is Lady Darchana Madinani, archdean of Absalom’s premier school of the arcane, the Arcanamirium. She’s has come to the Pathfinder Society on delicate business.”

“As Second Spell Lord of Absalom, I continually investigate magical attempts to attack our home. The Pathfinder Society recently aided one of my investigations by capturing a disguised Okeno slave ship used for several months to transport various unfortunates to Absalom for sale as slaves to the city’s noble families. Normally this would be legal, yet it seems someone has marked each of these slaves for use as divination foci. I can’t ignore the threat posed by such an insidious spy network. With the capture of that ship, we’re now in an excellent position to strike back at the hidden mastermind behind the slave-scrying.

“Know that I do not come to the Pathfinder Society lightly. I am taking on a calculated political risk by asking you to handle this investigation for me. But my long friendship with your master of spells Aram Zey has given me confidence in the abilities—and discretion—of Pathfinder agents.

“Using my own spells, I acquired an image of the slaver: a humanoid woman wearing a heavy veil and peering into a mirror. Her clothing is common in Kelish fashion, and I could sense her location was somewhere underground on Stonespine Island

“Although we could pursue conventional means of tracking down the slavers, I have taken measures to ensure our quarry does not see you coming, and I would appreciate a similar effort from you. I propose disguising yourselves either as slaves for sale or possibly the slavers selling them. If successful, you need only allow our enemy’s agents to escort you to their hidden stronghold. Once inside, it should be a modest challenge for you to escape and take their leader by surprise.” Lady Darchana pauses for emphasis. “Your goals are to capture the veiled spymaster and to bring the scrying mirror I observed back to Absalom for further study. If the spymaster dies before she is brought here, that would be regrettable but also understandable.”

Blackjack is going to have a field day, I'm sure

“Before you get too concerned,” Ambrus adds quickly, “it isn’t the Society’s practice to sell our field agents into slavery. We’re sending you with a reliable cover story and a magical edge we can discuss in a moment. This isn’t just because it’s a dangerous assignment; we also found the name ‘Muhlia’ associated with the captured Okeno ship. It’s not a common name, but if haven’t kept up with recent history, I can understand why you may not remember her. Pasha Muhlia al’Jakri was an associate of ours who represented Qadira’s interests to the Pathfinder Society. Three years ago, she departed following very ugly circumstances in Taldor and hasn’t been seen since. If it’s true that she’s building a spy network in Absalom, we need to head off the threat she poses to the society before she can strike.”

The Keleshite is in his late twenties, wearing loose clothing typical of Qadiran origin and a metallic armor covering his chest. A turban covers his head, revealing his piercing blue eyes, aquiline nose and well-tended short beard. His face has already known too many hardships, as his many scars testify. He is quite muscular and has the strong hands of one who has worked since the earliest days of his childhood. A tall, shafted weapon called a fauchard rests next to him, the blade bearing many engravings and arabesque dedicated to the Dawnflower.

When one of his companions shows up, he extends his hand and introduces himself. "Well met, I am Jhalan Aajav, blade of the Dawnflower and righter of wrongdoings. I understand we are to work together on this mission."

Listening intently to the Venture-Captain's words as well as the Spell Lord's, Jhalan's eye grow weary all of a sudden.

So many years in slavery, only to be a slave again? Dawnflower, give me strength. I know this is for the greater good, but...

"You may know from your registers that I was born a slave. Although becoming one again doesn't please me, I think that our higher purpose means much more. You can count on me. What do we know about this Muhlia?"

He wears magical half plate armor with a flowing cloak over it, and carries a 5 foot long adamantine greatsword over his shoulder, a heavy flail on his belt, and a masterwork darkwood composite shortbow that most people can't even draw. At the mention of slaves, his face darkens. Hearing of Jhalan's former struggle, he claps a large hand on the man's shoulder and says, "I, too, bear no love for slavers nor slavery as an institution. I am loathe to even pretend we are part of this despicable practice. However, I see the tactical advantages such a deception can provide."

To Ambrus and Lady Darchana, he asks, "By what manner can we assure our entry into this slaver's den? Do you have an inside contact? Or are we to find our own way to this mystery woman? And do you think the veiled woman you discovered could be this Muhlia?"

Oh this sounds right up the good captains alley!

A roguish and slightly disreputable fellow is dressed in a rather sharp naval uniform, bearing a cockade of Galtan origin on his tricorne and the epaulettes of an Eagle knight on his shoulders. He pours out a few glasses of red wine for the people in the room and offers around a platter of fresh bread and soft cheese. He then returns to studying a set of charts and quietly hums the national anthem of his native homeland whilst in thought...

As the flame haired Lady Darchana Madinani enters the room, the scally-wag pirate lowers his charts and raises an eyebrow, a broad smile crosses his face. He listens to her words very intently, nodding sagely and smiling wisftfully at the news of a slave ship being taken, grinning at the news that the target of this expedition would be a slaver of note, and then his face cracks into a look of disbelief at the news he must act as either slave or slaver.

"Captain Blackjack of The Raven, I am blessed to make your acquaintance, maidmoiselle" her offers her a glass of his fine Galtan pinot-noir "...the second most enchanting red in the room" he remarks at the glass quietly, his double meaning quite plain as he then smiles at her in that flirting way that charming Galtan fellows do before continuing, "I am honoured to be chosen for such a task, those of us who have rallied to the cause of Andoran are amongst the greatest opposers of slavery in the Inner Sea, so it is with some... reticence... that I accept the need for this trickery, but some passion in which I shall embrace the mission set before us."

After a moments reflection he continues "My comrades raise good points, I would also like to know our likely destination and our means of travel. I would also know if you were furnishing magical means of restraint, this scrying slaver is likely some form of arcane practitioner."

Marra:

Gnolls are humanoids with hyena-like features. They are cruel and tend to keep packs of hyenas as pets. Gnolls love hunting but try to make slaves do everything else for them.Gnolls are primarily nocturnal, typically worship Lamashtu, and are known to kill and eat sentient creatures. Some exceptionally aggressive, strong, and clever gnolls are known as flinds, and they typically rise quickly to the top of their pack hierarchies. They’re known for using flail-like weapons called flindbars.

Upon Jhalan's concerns, Lady Darchana tries her best to be reassuring: “We have considered other options, but posing as slaves gives you the best chance of taking the spymaster we seek by surprise. Besides, if you fail, we have every reason to believe you’ll simply be shipped back to Absalom where it’s convenient to retrieve you.” Her somewhat cold, academic stance doesn't help a lot.

Ambrus adds some useful information We do have a detailed report from Rilla, a Pathfinder who spent some time as a prisoner of our enemies. Rilla remembers being separated from the other Pathfinders while in Katapesh, taken to Okeno, then
marched inland to a little fort with a lot of gnolls. The gnolls deferred to a humanoid woman who always wore a heavy veil that concealed her head and face. At least once, the veiled woman used surgical tools to take some of Rilla’s blood. Rilla vaguely recalls lessons on how to serve multi-course meals and help nobles into and out of fancy clothes. When the veiled woman was satisfied with Rilla’s progress, the gnolls marched her and several other slaves back to Okeno and put her on a ship
bound for Absalom called the Kat Season.

The woman she described, and the clues we have collected so far, everything points to the involvement of Muhlia.

“The gnolls tend to nap or just relax during the day, trying to avoid being given chores. At night, they’re more active and alert, and usually several of them leave the fort to go hunting. Rilla wished she could help us more, but her memory of the last few months is hazy. We found and removed a curse placed on her to weaken her resistance to divination, which may also explain this memory issue.”

Ambrus continues on the topic of Muhlia: “Muhlia is a resourceful negotiator and agent who was known for nursing grudges even before she disappeared. Over the past several years, her name has appeared documents recovered from Aspis Consortium operations. We believe she may have had a close connection to the Desimire brothers Aglorn and Tancred, both associated with the Consortium and slain during conflicts with the Society. Muhlia favors deception and ambushes, so be on your guard.”

When Blackjack comes to the topic of magical support, Ambrus Valsin excitedly rubs his hands together as a proud grin cracks his businesslike expression. “Thought you’d never ask! I’ve brought one of our experiments out of development for a field test,” he explains while planting a boot on an unremarkable cedar chest. “This is a magic chest warded in much the same way as our craftspeople sometimes enchant small pouches. From the outside, it’s nonmagical and holds whatever you put in it as expected. However, if you speak the right command word before it’s opened, it instead accesses a secret, extradimensional space that can hold several hundred pounds of gear. It’s yours to use on this trip and should help smuggle most of your gear through Okeno. The forged paperwork we’re sending with you notes the chest is part of the shipment.” Valsin demonstrates the chest’s use and command word. “Anything else you want to bring needs to be something you can hide on your person and keep hidden.”

Lady Darchana nods her approval and adds, “I can also shrink one essential tool or weapon for each of you. It should provide you enough of an edge in breaking out and recovering the rest of your gear.”

Jhalan, Blackjack, Grimaldus:

On their way out, Major Maldris approaches the trio of Liberty's edge members. He puts a stack of papers away to have a free hand to salute the men, then says “I have heard about your participation in Darchana’s plan, and I’m proud to know that you’re involved. Daring acts like these strike terror in the hearts of slavers and give hope to the subjugated. I know you’re unlikely to have—or leave—many witnesses, but if you can strike fear into the hearts of this villainous operation’s leadership, strike down the more dangerous and oppressive slavers in a dramatic way, or just be seen battling in the defense of the oppressed, we can share your exploits and inspire a new wave of freedom fighters.” He considers his advice for a moment and adds, “But don’t throw your life away trying to burn Okeno to the ground. Pick your fights carefully, and return a hero.”

Lady Darchane accepts the roses, but with an academic attitude she says I will take care of these.

You may disguise as a slave or a slaver. Adventurers who plan to pose as slaves need to remove or hide their gear and don cheap tunics or loincloths. To complete the outfit, they must also don a slave collar, a metal band outfitted with a keyed lock. The collars must remain strong enough to pass casual inspection, but a PC can attempt to rig a collar when to open without needing tools or keys as a full-round action; this is a DC 25 Disable Device check attempted when placing the collar.

PCs who plan to pose as slavers should take care to hide symbols of any organizations with a reputation for freeing slaves, such as holy symbols of Cayden Cailean or the Sword and Eagle of Andoran. Animal companions, familiars too large to conceal, or special mounts may have difficulty passing as the slavers’ pets and should wear collars in order to pose as part of the merchandise.

Please describe your disguise, and indicate whether you want to take 10 on a roll, or make the actual disguise roll. Each PC can get aid from one other PC. Do NOT make the rolls right now - we'll make them once they're relevant

Once the party is ready, Elindriel Firesong comes out, and says That's quite the mission you have on your hands. Ambrus has asked me to bring you to the Coins district. She eventually leads the party of Mahjub Madhi, who is nervous as ever. Mahjub only here to help, ok he says, stroking his beard I made the paperwork, nobody will know who you really are. Mahjub take care of that. Specially for you. He takes his time finalising some papers, then he says: You remember Kat Season, right? After what happened to last crew... Darchana put on new crew. You can trust them. Mahdi says, and strokes his beard again. No problem for you, ok?

The voyage south, aboard the Kat Season, is fairly uneventful.

Sharks casually feed on cast-off corpses that float like buoys marking the channel into Yellow Harbor. This close to Okeno, the rocky mountain range that gives Stonespine Island its name is a blur against the sky, hidden by the city’s haze of smoke and dust. Each pier is crowded with yellow-sailed slave galleys, pirate clippers, and the occasional, heavily armed merchant ship. Past a row of taverns, the slave markets are smelly and crowded, packed with auction blocks and pens.

The 'shrink item' spell will actually reduce your item to small size and make it cloth-like, so it can be easily hidden. Any other item would require a sleight of hand

Just a clarification, Blackjack has a longsword on his hip and acting as a slaver, but his no-dachi is the shrunk one. He will also recruit Marras skills ho hide the dagger on his person as she appears good at such shenanigans. I'll also take 10 on disguise with the help of the makeup and assists.

I think Jhalan was going as a slave - so that looks like a couple of slavers, their bodyguard/thug (Grim), and a bunch of domestic servants for sale... not bad!

Jhalan is indeed going as a slave intended for hard labor. A loincloth should do the trick I imagine?

Grimaldus removes or covers the Silver Dragon insignia on his armor. Using dirt, clay, and bootblack applied strategically, he attempts to make his half plate armor not look magically enhanced. His shrunken greatsword, now looking like a dagger, fits easily at his belt in plain sight, and his heavy flail an obvious choice for a slaver's weapon. He also keeps his bow - always useful at sea to kill potential boarders and for fishing! He figures not bathing for the trip will give him the appropriate look and feel (and odor) of a slaver's tough. The one item he places in the trunk is his Cloak of Resistance +1.

Between Grimaldus and Blackjack, they appear to be a successful pair of ne'er-do-wells, expanding their trade to new lands and cargoes...

Taking 10 and Marra's aid on making his armor look less valuable and Grim more gross...

A group of slaves and slavers - our carefully disguised adventuring party - make it off the slaveship, instructed to move to the Fleshfairs, Okeno’s slave market. Ashore, the Garundi harbourmaster inspects the documents that Blackjack, Grimaldus and Ariward provide, and mumbles Righdantime.

Nah you's go an put yer cargo in one o the pens a'er there he says, pointing at a cage without apparent disinterest. As if on cue, a pair of gnolls ambles toward the group There's supposed to be a ship here. one asks the harbourmaster Yea, and a shipment as well.

Tha's the fo'k yer afder the harbourmaster says, and spits on the floor.

The two gnolls glance at the group More security. Less trouble fer us. the gnolls say as they spot the three slavers accompanying the slaves. You lot 'scorting again? the gnoll asks. Always 'scorting. he mutters to himself, as he moves to inspect the slave, and glancing at slavers alike.

Let's see those disguise and sleight of hand checks now.

"You lot spyers or buyers? Because if you've coin for purchase then we have wares for sale, otherwise you could interest us in whats on in town and where a man might ease his loins after a long voyage eh? I'm not interested in a two copper quick-wife neither, I'm a man with a bit more standards than cruising for rough trade by a wharf - why look at the servants we have to sell - fine domestic help for houses of discernment! Reading, writing, cooking, cleaning, and a little bit of education - good servants should be just about invisible so the story goes, so these half sized helpers are already half way there... oh right where was I, thats right, getting an offer was I?" Blackjack wrings his hands expectantly "Or were you pointing us to a holding pen for this lot next to some fine accommodation for our lot? You pair look like some handy lads to be friends with eh?"

Disguise Skill was off Marra applying a take 10 if possible, otherwise its 10+2+2+2+2=18 per her post above.

Ariward sent some boy to buy him mean-looking whip, manacles and simple black cloak. He put holy symbol of Shelyn deep under his shirt, not to be hanging around his neck. Should it be Sleight of Hand? Putting his backpack in a chest, he added morningstar from his belt. In alias, I do not have part of equipment called MWK Backpack

"I'm from Worldwound, and for purpose of this mission, I am highly disappointed in amount of payment I got there for my service," he started working on his legend, "I joined you guys to take a part of my reward I couldn't take from officer's quarters"

For his disguise, he asked Marra to help, how better to do it, but mostly it included putting some oil in his skin to make it more tan. He spend some time dirtying his breastplate and shoes. Take10 + Marra's Assist

Ashore

OK, here goes first check.. No standing still, just try to move easy...

Ariward was standing near the head of the group, in case he needs to speak. Probably Captain Jack and Master Grim felt themselves more comfortable, but he was a bit nervous. He took a look at gnolls: last time they fought, Svetlana was near and she were damn effective against those. Probably, they won't notice something in his mighty figure, wearing breastplate (not as shiny as previously), with sap in one hand, axe and whip on his belt. Manacles are hanging on the other side and mighty bow is behind his back. Half arrows in his quiver were blunt, but another half were deadly.

Marra's Assist to Disguise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Disguise (Take10+Marra's kit+Inspire Competence+Aid): 10 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 19
Sleight of Hand (-armour penalty): 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 - 2 = 2 Tadadam!

As he moved around, holy symbol of Shelyn slide of his neck and felt on the ground.

Should I blame slaves or pay no attention? Damn! I should have checked knot before...

Take 20 possible, since no time pressure? Disable Device at +10, and if so he'll offer to do the same for the others' collars.

At the Fleshfairs, he is careful to keep his head down, appearing as a cowed gnome resigned to his fate.

Used Marra's aid, too. Took 10 for disguise, so 10+5=15. No sleight of hand needed, his reduced greatsword is hanging on his belt like a dagger. =)

Grimaldus knows how to be imposing. His size was helpful, but the attitude and the way one stood were other big parts of it. But the one critical aspect of keeping people from takng too hard a look at your group was the glare. And Grim had that down perfectly. For who, in their right mind, wants to gain the unwanted attention of a 7 foot tall human in armor and with arms big enough to rip your head off and the coldest, deadest eyes you've seen?

Poor Jhalan puts on his best look of sheer misery and resignation on his face, whereas his muscular, scarred and sweaty body is covered with only a mere loincloth, his head by a dirty turban offering a small comfort, a bit of shade in the searing sun of Stonespire Island. All his items have been put inside the magical chest, save for his shrunk cloth-like fauchard that is hidden in the folds of his loincloth.

I'll accept Mara's aid as well, and will take 10 on the disguise check for a final result of 10, aid included (if I'm not mistaken), unless we can take 20. Do I need a sleight of hand check as well? If so I'll take 10 or 20 too, depending on what's possible. Taking 10 makes a final 12 on the check I think.

No sleight of hand is needed for shrunken items

The gnolls give the slave a quick glance, and though Cacumattus feels the eyes of one of the gnolls focus on his thieves' tools, the gnoll doesn't seem to want to act on it. Things are different when Ariward drops a holy symbol. What this? the largest of the two gnolls barks. This trinket? That will serve nicely to cover our expenses.

The other gnoll shows a canine smile Har-har! Yes we'll take it. For your safety!

Harhar! Now shut ut the lot of you. Slaves, I don't want to hear a squeak, or Vangru here will rip you open. The other gnoll chimes in and threatens the party members posing as slavers all the same: don't expect you humanoid to receive any special treatment. It's a long empty road. Nobody can hear you scream.

The gnolls round up the slaves and bind the slaves’ hands with rope and link the slave collars together on a rope leash. Besides the party members, there's three more slaves: a female halfling, and a male and female human.

Blackjack notices that the halfling slave, who tries to strike up a conversation whenever the gnolls are out of earshot, keeps talking about her past T was a bad crop year, you see, and I failed to predict the weather correctly, so the storm got all my seedlings, and my produce withered away.
