Caranthir silently curses as Jelani slumps to the ground.
I was not fast enough!
The elf rains down more death on the enemies, focusing on the zombie creatures advancing on the group.

Not again...
Thistle takes a deep breath, calming his racing heart. He hardly gives the plant a thought as it tries to beat on him, focusing his attentions on the fallen warrior.
Reaching down, Thistle sprinkles a healthy amount of diamond dust on his friend, akin to a death rite. Then he allows the energies to flow through his body, praying it restores Jelani's mind, instead of spiriting his soul away to the underworld.
Cast restoration - This should restore all ability drain/damage done to one ability score, in this case, INT. Hopefully that brings him back... I've got the diamond dust specifically listed in my items to avoid any material component issues.

Round 2 Precise Shoot; Precise Bomb; Point Blank
Fellgrim side steps 5ft and throws a bomb at the big plant

Caranthir takes out one of the advancing zombies by splitting its skull with an arrow, then badly maims another one with two well-aimed shots.
Thistle starts preparing for a restorative ritual (Casting time is three rounds?)
Fellgrim lobs a bomb at the growth of plants, and it explodes right among it, burning the leaves and filing the air with smell of cut grass and ammonium. No more tendrils advance on the party.

I'll be dipped, and here I thought I looked at everything. /sigh It looks like the the big bad thing is dead, and I am sure Bruce, Caranthir, and Fellgrim can make short work of the Zombies, so yea, I might as well keep rolling with this. Hopefully no one needs emergency healing in the next 3 rounds. And hopefully whatever happens when someone is unconscious from a full INT drain/damage takes longer than 3 rounds to take effect...

Thistle sees the awkward, slow zombie amble towards him. When the thing swings at him, it is predictable, and the Nagaji uses his armor to deflect the blow. In the meantime, life energy flows from his body to the battered Bruce while he continues the ritual on his giant friend.
As he continues to scatter the diamond dust, he looks plaintively over at Bruce, tempted to break the ritual to help his caped friend who may be in more dire need.

Bruce retreats, now invisible, while Fellgrim rains fire and explosions on another zombie. The plant-infested creature is weakened enough for Caranthir to finish it off, after he has down the other zombie.
Combat over!
Thistle finishes his casting, but finds that the head trauma has been fatal to Jelani. Fortunately, his manages to regrow the damaged grey matter of the berserker, killing off the vines infesting his skull and preventing the death of Jelani from turning into something far, far worse.
Guess how those zombies got created...
Fellgrim Cogmaester |
Heal (Aid Another): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Fellgrim will try to help figure out what is going on with Jelani
"What can be done to help Jelani now? Perhaps my remove curse or neutralize poison potions can remove the infestation?"
Thistle Voltare |
Thistles shoulders slump, realizing he was to late after all.
Why do you torment me gods of supposed life? Curse you, to give me this power and continually show me I am pitiful and weak compared to the death that surrounds me.
I was afraid that was going to happen... My hope was that by restoring the INT damage that it would negate everything else. Dammit that sucks. This place can be brutal... holy balls.
So I can't cast raise dead yet. But we should probably go get Jelani raised before we go deeper into this place.
Thistle Voltare |
That one really sucked for me, compared to the last two deaths. The first time you died (and Bruce) I felt like I should have been able to stop it, had I done things differently. This time I felt helpless. The only thing that could have saved you was making your will save, or bad INT damage rolls to give us more time to kill the plant. That was brutal...
I've also never really played at these levels. I can see why so many people have the theory of skipping a "traditional healer" in favor for another combat oriented, or skill oriented class. Healing just can't keep up, and healing is useless against some of the really high level "save or suck" stuff. Would be better just to kill things faster sometimes it seems.
Heavy on his shoulder as well as his heart, Thistle wraps his dead friend's arm around his shoulder for a second time and hoists his lifeless body off the ground, while gripping the familiar spire transport token in his other hand. In a flash they are at the surface, and the Nagaji begins the trek back to the hellknight controlled town.
Might as well get the raise dead now.
Caranthir Silverhand |
Dang...that stinks. Yeah, may as well go back now. Can I ask what actually killed him? I know that having Con go to 0 kills you outright, but not other stats. Was that a special ability of the enemy to kill that way? Or was it that it started changing him into a zombie? Just curious on that one. Anyway, back to town it is. And Thistle, I think you are being too hard on yourself, and I certainly wouldn't trade in-combat healing for another damage dealer. You have saved our butts more times that I can count. And Caranthir is good at math.
Jelani |

+1, Thistle is great. This isn’t your fault.
DM Kludde |
Jelani once again opens his eye in a temple, overhearing two priests talking.
... you see, I seen them walk around with hardly anything left in the cranium. You can be limp like sack of potatoes, drooling like a newborn, or lose all motor coordination, nothing of that will kill you. This case is strange, the brain damage seems to have wrested controls of this guy somehow. Lucky for him that Nagaji managed to revert the damage somehow. Hey, doesn't this guy look familiar somehow?
Jelani |
“Oof, another ride up the spire to the Boneyard. Damned Emerald Spire....we’ll conquer you yet..“ What is it with all these spires...?
How many prestige does a raise cost?
Caranthir Silverhand |
We'll all chip in and share the cost of the raise dead, I'm sure.
Caranthir places a hand on the giant Jelani's shoulder.
"Thank you for joining us again," he says. "Next time, we will try to keep you alive a little longer," he adds.
Back to the action?
Thistle Voltare |
Thistle cannot hear the priest's adulations, else he might have grudgingly accepted them. For now though, he is content that his friend is breathing again, and seemingly in his right mind.
Good to go!
RE: Raise spell. 16PP. But Caranthir is right, I'll be happy to chip in. At these levels its a small amount really. You will need the 2 resto spells cast as well to get rid of the negative levels. Thistle can cast those (1000gp material component cost each time)
Fellgrim Cogmaester |
While that is ok with me ... I would be willing to do more gp so Jelani is not broke afterward?
Thistle Voltare |
I've got not problem chipping in for the whole thing. Those PP could come in handy later. I know I should probably grab another wand. Seriously though, the amount of gold we get at this level, sharing the burden for a raise/resto is a pittance.
DM Kludde |
9x5x10 = 450 + 5000 gp for the diamond puts it at 5450gp. If Thistle casts it, it goes down to just 5000 for the diamond.
Let me know if you want to make the trek down again... the big plant is dead, after all
Jelani |
So total of 7k if Thistle does all the casting. Split between the five of us, that comes out to 1,400 each. I'll mark it off my sheet. I'm ready to head back down now, yeah.
Caranthir Silverhand |
Will those funds come off our current mission, or should we mark it off current funds? Also ready to proceed.
Thistle Voltare |
based on a previous ruling I experienced, we can mark it off the sheet we are currently earning. Let's do this!
-Posted with Wayfinder
Fellgrim Cogmaester |
Sounds good to me ... back unto the breach!
DM Kludde |
The cleaner way would be to spend the money you currently have. You technically haven't earned the money for this level yet (though, on the other hand, you get the gold for the items you find on the level, and you've cleared about a quarter of it, which is enough to cover 1400
Down in the belly of the dungeon, the garden still seems lush as ever. What other dangers may it hide?
Caranthir Silverhand |
I'm taking 1400 off my gp to cover it...
Having been attacked by the hidden dangers of this place, Caranthir decides to once again use his clairvoyance spell to scout ahead.
I'd like to use two instances of this spell to look into the hallways in the big cavern (above M5 and M7, respectively). I will place the sensor as far into each hallway as I can see, then take 20 perception for a 42.
Thistle Voltare |
Going to assume we rested. Re-buff list...
- Bless(everyone - 10 minutes)
- Shield of Faith(Thistle, Bruce, Jelani - 10 minutes)
- Align Weapon good(Jelani, Bruce, Caranthir - 10 minutes)
- Freedom of Movement(Thistle, Bruce, Jelani - 100 minutes)
- Archon's Aura(Thistle Only - 10 minutes)
- Re-link everyone with life link
Notes:
- Shield of faith is a +3 deflection bonus, does not stack with a ring of protection - ie the three of us only get a net +2 increase to AC.
- For the align weapon, Caranthir gets 50 projectiles. You can choose which ones the spell is cast on. If you would prefer something besides 'good', please just note that and we can assume that is how I cast it.
Thistle begins the now familiar routine of casting beneficial spells as the pungent, earthy aroma washes over them. In the background, he can see Bruce doing similar things with potions and extracts, as well as Caranthir and Fellgrim.
We are effective, if nothing else. This place will not defeat us.
Thistle nods to his companions, and begins the search again, first making sure nothing snuck back into an area they had already cleared, then exploring the new area behind his strong friends.
DM Kludde |
After Thistle ensures the party buffed until they glow, the group moves forward, carefully avoiding the flesh-eating horror in the corner of the garden to move to the stairs in the back.
Caranthir uses magic to get a vision of what lies ahead:
(M12): A stark and barren cave features a 20-foot-wide shaft with a levitating stone platform floating in the middle. Facing the pit is a stone seat big enough for an ogre.
Sitting atop the throne is an undead figure with a stature nothing short of that of an ogre.
(m11); This small cavern is a museum of sorts. Five stone pedestals present various strange artifacts and curiosities. Among the displays are an ordinary black cat sleeping on a velvet cushion, a serrated tooth made from a pale green crystal-metal, a large brain about two feet across, an empty pedestal, and an odd leather helm with a big, round eye in the forehead. The eye in the helm blinks and follows the movements of anyone who ventures nearby.
Two short flights of natural stone steps lead down to the west and to the south, and a large stone door stands at the eastern end of the chamber.

Bruce finishes his extracts and looks at Caranthir. "So which way should we go?"
