Okay, five out of six...

Separating the River Kingdoms from the land of Razmiran is the West Sellen River. Strength rules this land of opportunity, and many pirates and bandits can be found along the shores of its flow. It's not all lawlessness, though. The mighty Fort Inevitable is a bastion of Law at the border of the echo woods.

Aah, the echo woods. A vast expanse of wildland. It is here that we start our adventure. Let's zoom in a bit more. There, see that open spot in the woods? There, we find the Emerald Spire. A small fortress, seemingly made of glass, names after the green spire - crumbled at the top - that sticks out of it.

The fortress is a ruin mostly. The upper portions of the tower were ruined long ago, leaving half-broken, half-molten pieces of glass scattered across the surroundings. The spire's ruin are known to be infested with dangerous monsters.

Let's see if we can find our heroes, shall we? A bit further out, on that road there. Do they know what awaits them?

I'm giving you the chance here to introduce yourselves. I'll provide some adventuring hook, but I'd like to know something about your character's motivations first.

His head and face concealed in a hood and cloth mask, Bruce has been relatively quiet on the journey. In fact the party may have forgotten he was there sometimes if it weren't for the occasional clink of glass vials from the alchemical equipment he carries. He spends most of his time considering why he was selected for this mission. "I though I asked the master of blades to keep me near Absalomn. I am of much better use were I know all the back streets and short cuts." He looks at the spire jutting up over the trees. I am unsure if I will be of much use in a place like that.

The scaly reptilian humanoid takes long strides, frequently out in front of the group, though not necessarily leading. His unblinking eyes take in the trail and surrounding vegetation, constantly on the lookout. A pair of birds fly in front of him, fighting angrily over some morsel of food, though no sound can be heard by the stoic Nagaji. A small wooden plank hangs from his belt, smoothed by years of handling. It still bears the words My name is Thistle written in chalk.

When asked why he was here, he had simply written Called by the gods. I do not question, merely respond in obedience. His Scale mail armor, shield and morningstar answered the questions about his place in combat without needing to be asked.

As the broken spire appears above the treeline, a wry smile appears on his scaly face. Pulling out the plank, he quickly scribbles We are here, Fate smiles.

The beautiful young and slender women of eastern descent walks with the rest of the party. You know her name to be Masami Kaneda. She is as exotic as her origin and demeanor. She has most of her equipment tied to her armored dinosaur companion. 'Akira' she calls him lovingly. On the way here she was able to charm animals and other humans like it is nothing. It seemed to come so natural to her.

From what you gathered during the talks over the cooking fire, Masami came here to escape the dreary life of the city where men would fawn over her and try to bed her. It was too easy to take advantage of them. Too boring.

She liked to joke around a little with the others. Flirt as well, but she made it clear as day, try to take advantage of her and she, and her reptilian companion, would make you regret it.

Jalik bears the scars of a tribe from the far North but with the features and size of an elf. He wears scale mail and carries very little on him, only a few items for survival.

He talks of his childhood in the far north as a member of the Greattusk tribe. It is obvious this has left him with a short temper. It was not a desirable childhood or place for him but he does not regret it either. However most of his conversation is centered on his search for his birh mother who fled the north many years earlier to the river kingdoms. She like him longer for lands warmer and more pleasant to there smaller elven/half elven bodies.

This journey has led him here with others accomplishing other goals yet he still wishes someday to find his mother or at least her resting place. Last he heard she traveled near the borders of Razmiran where she might have settled if she is still alive.

Skaarr is a tall, lean half-orc. He has short bushy black hair and a full beard. There's a scar running down his right cheek, and he wears a golden nose ring and tusk cap. His clothing is that of a middle class scholar-adventurer - an undyed knee-length linen tunic belted at the waist, covered in a embroidered green vest and deerskin waistcoat. He also wears breeches, and sturdy, leather, calf-high boots. He's further outfitted with a backpack, and a large long-axe whose handle juts above his right shoulder. There's a spell component pouch at his belt, and next to it a second pouch from inside which peeks a small tortoise.

Back in Absalom when introduced to the other Pathfinders he said his name was Skaarr. For the most part he has kept to himself as much as possible during the journey, ignoring the other Pathfinders unless questioned on something. He always answers as briefly as possible. Now that they are finally in sight of the Emerald Spire he grins. "About time we arrived. Now we can begin to work of getting rich, and prying secrets from the corpse of this fortress."

A tall varisian man wearing armor and smelly furs, sword and board strapped to his back, walks with the group. His eyes closely following the tracks on the path. Upon seeing the spire he smiles and nods to the reptilian oracle.

The words of Venture-Captain Holgarin Smine were baffling. Sure, you had heard of the Emerald Spire before, but like most people from this region never considered the possibility of exploring it. Two weeks ago. he explains two wizards from Thornkeep apparently did just that - they went into the fortress, but never came out again. Lady Iliara Starcloak, the leader of the Goldenfire Order, is seriously concerned about her two missing members. A concern, should we provide aid, we can obviously leverage to our advantage. I don't have to tell your that the Goldenfire Order can be a powerful ally. I want you to do as the wizards did, and explore the fortress, on the premise of a rescue mission. Of course, anything else you might find noteworthy to report is of value as well: you would be the first to emerge from the fortress since time unknown.

I've put up a map here. There's an obvious approach to the fortress labelled 'A1'

The stone staircase that led up to the tower’s door is now nothing more than a rubble-strewn cliff. On the tower’s south side, a dirt path winds up the steep embankment to a pitch-black doorway.

Bruce scouts ahead, until the bend in the road, and finds no traps there.

Are you just searching the path, or also the perimeter of the fortress? The original fortress entrance (on the west side) is now a heap of rubble, an most of perimeter is. A search may reveal something, though...

Thistle continues his walk in silence. While he doesn't speak much, it isn't because he can't. His inability to hear makes his words come out twisted, which is even more unnatural due to his reptilian nature. Among those not of his kin, he hesitates to do much that makes them even more uncomfortable around him.

Eager, however, to be useful to the group, he continues to keep his unblinking eyes peeled to the forest on either side of their path as they approach the tower.

How close are we to a town for resupply, should that be needed?

Skaarr also stays near the center of the group following along with the others. He holds a scroll (of mage armor) in one hand, and lets his loaded sling dangle from the other hand. "Hopefully we can get a ways in before something tries to kill us. I prefer easy money," Skaarr retorts to the pretty Tian girl. Wonder what kind of challenges we will face inside?

The closest patch of civilisation, as seen from here, is Fort Inevitable, a stronghold in the possession of the Hellknights of the Order of the Nail.

There's three possible ways in: the current path, which has traces of recent use as an entrance, the fortress' original entrance, which are the ruined stairs on the west side. They would need a DC 10 Climb check to move up. There's also some sort of concealed back entrance.

Niccccce Thistle says out-loud, somewhat surprising those around him. While he can't even hear his own speech, the feel of the air rushing over his forked tounge is as soothing to his senses as the hiss like sound is to the ears of those around him who can hear. With a grin, he grabs his wooden plank and quickly scribbles, Concealed Entrance, probably less traps, nodding to Bruce in agreement.

Before we approach any door, I will take the opportunity to cast Resistance on whoever is about to open the door, or perchance try to disable any traps.

The concealed door is covered by a screen of canvas and wood painted to blend into the rubble. Bruce finds no traps. The door leads into a tunnel through debris, shored up with rough timbers, through a collapsed mound of glass rubble, into a room. It's a curving hall, which has been badly damaged, but there are intact doors to the north, east, and south, as well as a large double- door leading west to the core of the tower.

There's nobody here... almost too quiet.

Thistle slowly, carefully walks towards the center of the room, surveying the walls, ceiling and floor as he goes, step by careful step.

His morningstar sways back and forth as he subconsciously checks its balance in his hand, his heavy wooden shield hanging from his off arm, ready to be snapped up into place at a moment's notice.

Not noticing anything painfully obvious, he points to the south door as he looks to his companions with a shrug of his shoulders, as if to say, This one is as good as any...

Skaarr reads his scroll of mage armor, then draws a potion in one hand, and his axe in the other.

Thus prepared, he moves as quietly as he can after the others. It's never this easy. Something is bound to attack us before long. Maybe this time I'll avoid getting sliced open for the whole mission.

Inside the fortress, a magical darkness encloses everything. Those without dark vision (Is there anyone with dark vision?) can only see five feet ahead, provided they have a source of light.

Bruce knows of the many goblins in this place. Most of them are disorganised, but every now and then a tribe is united by a strong leader, and they become more organised. There haven't been many reports of specific raids, although in general the threat is always present.

The halls seem to see their fair share of traffic. There is recent mud and bits of soil.

Thistle swing open the door, and immediately the sound of scrambling can be heard (but not by him), and the screaming of goblins can be heard.

Skaarr hears the sounds of goblin screaming and curses under his breath. Knowing that most of his fellow Pathfinders will be blind in the darkness, he pushes his way past them and into the corner of the room. Along the way, he pops the cork from his potion. Once he's next to Bruce and has a view of the doorway, he guzzles it down and grows to double his normal size. He casts the empty bottle aside. The giant Skaarr looks fairly cramped against the wall, but he readies his axe for any goblins that come within reach of his long arms.
