We start our adventure looking at Janira, the halfling pathfinder bard, assigned to accompany the adventurers on their mission. Mission? Yes, you remember, right? The mission assigned by Kreighton Shane? Ah, we'll get to that, there's plenty of time for a flashback once travelling starts.

Where was I? We were looking at Janina Gavix, pathfinder bard. Halfling. Sitting opposite of the adventurers at a table at the Pig's Paunch. The Pig's Paunch, "Where it all began".

Janira pulls out a large leather-bound journal and opens it on the table. Before we set out, we should all get to know each other and review our plan. After all, the most important factors that determine whether an expedition will be a success are cooperation and preparation! I’ll go first!

My name is Janira Gavix, and I joined the society nearly four years after coming of age. I joined to see the world and sample all of the fine food it has to offer. I did change that view quite quickly, though, and now I focus mostly on the preservation of knowledge. I hope to have one of my reports published in the Pathfinder Chronicles some day.

I wanted adventure. And I wanted to find and protect ancient art. The speaker, reclining in his chair, arms and legs sprawled out akimbo, would look exotic to most humans, although his equally exotic-looking companions somewhat lessened the effect. His eyes were the color of amber, and his hair matched the color of the sea. Once an observer were to get past the exciting newness of such an odd sight, they would notice that he was not actually very attractive. Although he had a firm jaw, his face was far too angular, and he was much more skinny than was right, especially for being so tall. Any art, really. He continued after a long pause.

The burly tiefling looked around the room in contempt.
Bunch of weakling, the lot of them.

He opens his fanged mouth and a low rumbling voice comes out.
"My name is Darius Skullcrusher, and that is what I do and I enjoy doing WHAHAHAHA! What better way then earning a few bucks while doing it. It seems that Pathfinders have a knack for encountering challenges and that is what I am looking for. Now lets leave this joint! My sword needs another coating of blood or it will never stay red."
He takes out his great sword and jabs it in the table. It is heavily serrated and you see that it is almost completely covered in dried blood.

Sitting across the table from the tiefling, a frail looking Aasimar with golden skin and hair and strikingly blue eyes sat nervously. He didn't seem to care for the brutishness of the barbarian and eyed him with disapproval. "My name is Aziroth and I joined the Pathfinders to help heal the wounded as we stamp out the evil in the world."

With his clearly Tianese features Hisao looks around at his much more exotic companions with relief. He should be able to stay innocuous without much trouble in this group.

With rainbow color changing hair and bright golden eyes another Assimar at the table is easy to identify. She smiles with a gentle ease and even the bloody sword in the center of table doesn't seem to phase her. She is anything but coy and her eloquent speaking voice has a certain intangible quality that is easy and pleasant to hear.

Greetings fellow Pathfinders. I am Eloisa Fairclough. Myself, I joined the Pathfinder to travel Golarion and learn the songs of her people.

And that's the adventurers take make up this group. But before we continue, let's backtrack a little. Let's see how this group came together, and why they are here...

I'm missing one, though. Who isn't here yet?

The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: “Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.”

The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.

“Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!” With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. “Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.

“But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix,” he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, “Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.”

Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, “Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago,while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few
days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.”

Master Shaine hops to his feet. “Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.” With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

Darius' face shows clear disappointment.

"Exploration? Documenting? That sounds rather dull! Are you sure there are no monsters in the surroundings that need to be put down? Maybe some wildlife that is attacking locals?"

Also sitting at the table is a tall, dark-skinned Tian-Shu man with a shaved head. He looks mostly human, aside from his glowing orange eyes, and an identically-colored horizontal marking across his forehead. Both eyes and mark smoulder with the dull orange glow of steel being worked in a smith's forge. On longer inspection, one notices that his skin also lacks pores, and has a somewhat oily sheen. Despite these alien features, he is a handsome man with an easy smile. He's dressed in the robes of an Irorian monk, and there is a large spiked shield leaned up against the side of his chair, along with his pack of other gear.

When Janira introduces herself and asks why they are there, he speaks up. "Hello, I am Danu." The name is clearly not an Avistani one, and he speaks it with the tonal pronunciation of the Tien language. "I joined the society to learn more about the world, and to help others learn more while working on perfecting myself."

When Darius expresses his regret about their mission, Danu speaks up again. "Don't worry brother, I'm sure the caves will be interesting in their own right. Life's not all about blood and guts, there's usually plenty of that whether you want it or not."

"Interesting. I think we will certainly be capable of completing our task with this group," says Aziroth as he scans his fellow Pathfinders. "And I agree with Danu, I'm sure you will find plenty of things to skewer with your sword, Darius."

He then addresses Janira. "Is there any particular equipment we may need?"

Eloisa springs from her chair to her feet. She leans forward to address the group and places her hands palms down on the table. I am in solidarity with Aaziroth. With this group I doubt there is much we cannot accomplish! I must admit, I am excited to make contact with Gillmen of these caves. Though I am unfamiliar with the race and their culture entirely.

She nods to Janira What can you tell us of these Gillmen? Are they brutish and hostile or is more of a diplomatic mission to establish contact with this previously unknown group under the Kortos Mounts?

And so, we return to the present, our introductions just finishing up.

“On to the details of the mission at hand,” Janira says with an eager grin. “After reviewing my mission reports personally, Master Shaine believes it is no coincidence that each time they entered the caves it was during a full moon, so it is also no coincidence that you have been called here now, just a day before the moon is full again. We both believe that tomorrow night is our best chance to find out why these caves are important and what exactly the gillmen are doing in there.

“The caves we’ll be travelling to lie under the base of the Kortos Mounts. We’ll need to spend every minute of daylight possible to reach the caves by foot, crossing over the Cairnlands, taking the paths to Diobel, and finally making our way through the wilderness. With any luck we won’t run into any of the local inhabitants. Once in the caves, we’ll need to work together to explore and determine whether any gillman are present or have been recently. Keep an eye out for any other clues that might hint at the caves’ significance, too.”

“Centaurs control the lowlands and surrounding wilderness of the Kortos Mounts. The areas farther up the Mounts are controlled by minotaurs, and the icy peaks are home to tribes of harpies. They’re always vying for territory, but with any luck, we should be able to avoid them and reach the caves without conflict.”

"There’s always the chance we may run into bandits along the way, and there are dozens of kinds of predators in that forest. That’s why we should always be as prepared as possible.”

“Now, before we head out, if there aren’t any more questions, we should take a moment to go through your gear and make sure nothing important gets left out. Let's see, do you have acid or alchemist's fire, in case we run into a swarm, hmm? Rope, dungeoneering gear?

Eloisa:

At the center of the Isle of Kortos stand the Kortos Mounts, the points on the island. Entire tribes of centaurs, harpies, and minotaurs constantly vie for territory up and around the Mounts, with harpies being the most common at higher altitudes and centaurs controlling the lower slopes and foothills.

"I too have rope, as well as candles and torches, but none of the other equipment. If someone can point me in the direction of a shop, I can purchase an alchemist's fire and some chalk, but my pack is getting too heavy to buy any other gear. I'm not used to having to carry everything around with me," says Aziroth as he pats the backpack next to him.

We could use a hammer and some pitons and maybe a grappling hook

The journey starts by a march through the city of Absalom. Here's an orphanage filled with cats, there's a stately manor with obsidian doors, here's a block square leading the adventurers through a non-foggy back alley - all very uneventful. Then a long march through the cairn lands, the barren lands littered with siege towers and other remains of a besieged past. Janira points out one particular tower - a once quatrefoil in plain tower, collapsed on one side - and remarks: That tower recently collapsed, there will probably be some exploring there soon

The rest of the day is uneventful, and as the party sets up camp, Janira takes the time to show an intricate compass, emblazoned with the glyph of the open road, the symbol of the Pathfinder Society. I received this wayfinder when I successfully completed my Confirmation. Should we be successful on our journey, you will get your own as well.”.

The next day, the camp is broken up and the journey continues. After about an hour Janira flips open the wayfinder and holds it in front of her; the initials J. L. are engraved into the inside of the device’s lid. After studying the compass inside for a moment, she remarks, “We’re on the right path. We need to keep heading northwest past those large rocks up ahead.”

A large rock outcropping to the east rises nearly 20 feet above the forest floor, and a small sinkhole to the northwest drops off sharply, descending to the ground 10 feet below.

Just as the adventurers as passing through, a tree fall, disturbing an mass of angry snakes, now swarming towards the adventurers.

Stand fast! As Ergalius Muckbringer defeated the great wyrm of Krysigar, so shall we stand fast against this slithering mass! Janira says Inspire courage

"BAH snakes are no challenge to the mighty Darius!" He yells as he pulls out hit Lucerne hammer, moves 15 feet north and brings it down on the snakes.

Darius and Arion tries to physically attack the mass of snakes, but can't seem to adjust their aim correctly.

Aziroth reaches into his belt pouch and pulls out a flask. "I have some fire. Move so you don't get hit," he says as he moves behind Hisao to try to get an angle to throw his alchemist's fire.

Ugh! I hate snakes if they don't burn they will bleed! But first I need to lighten my load!

Eloisa removes her backpack from her shoulders and plops it on the ground next to her then draws her longsword from its sheath.

Hisao 5 foot steps south west to get away from the swarm and drawing a flask of alchemy fire from his backpack (Move action) hurls it at the swarm in such a way as to minimize damage to everybody else.

Eloisa arms herself. Hisao lobs alchemical fire into the swarm, lighting it on fire. The snakes hiss along with the fire, but for now, the creatures are only enraged by it.

It appears to me that Danu has yet to act in the first rd. After he does, then it will be the 2nd rd with the swarm acting first then following the list of names. Is this correct? I'm trying to see if I'm attacking or healing depending on how much damage we've taken.

@Aaziroth: I'm using group initiative, which means that everyone in a group (in this case: everyone) can post their actions simultaneously, after which I'll post the NPC/monsters' actions. If your name comes us bold, you can post your action. So right now, we'll have someone post an action for Danu, then I'll post for the Swarm and for Janira, after which you'll all get to go.

I'm using 24 hrs timeouts for this scenario (due to the limited time we have to run it). Please don't take it as an offence..

In that case, Hisao's first attack should have done 6 pts as well as my last one if I hit.

Eloisa stabs a fair number of snakes, and Aaziroth's fire burns the rest of 'em. The few serpents that are remaining flee off into the woods.

Well done, I must say, you handled that well - great work! Janira congratulates the group. Good thing we checked we had some alchemist's fire, right?

We have to move on, though, if we don't reach the caves by dusk, the gillmen may have already left.

The group continues its travels through the wilderness, until it reaches a spot blocked by fallen logs. A minor detour turns into an even greater one, as paths are overgrown and directions lost.

Can someone roll a survival check?

The path seemed lost, but the excellent tracking skills of Aaziroth help the group return to the trail and find the right direction. The adventurers are back on track, without losing too much time.

The dense forest opens to a wide clearing at the base of a sheer cliff. Thick vines cover the surface of the cliff stretching 30 feet overhead. “Here! The cave entrance is behind those vines,” Janira says with a broad smile as she walks to the cliff’s face. She pulls back several layers of vegetation to reveal a narrow crack in the cliff’s surface. “This is where I saw the gillmen enter.”

As she motions toward the aperture, the surrounding woods come alive with the sound of small animals fleeing some unseen danger and a large creature crashing through the undergrowth.

The halfling worriedly remarks, “Quick, take cover before whatever it is spots us!” As if she’d summoned the creature with her words, a massive horned monstrosity emerges from the trees. Standing eight feet tall on a pair of cloven hooves and wielding a tremendous axe, the bull-headed creature roars with unbridled anger when it spots the group.

Wisely assessing that a minotaur is beyond her charges’ capabilities, Janira screams, “A minotaur! There’s little chance we can stand against it. Take this bag,” she continues, pulling off her backpack, “and head deeper into the caves. Finish your mission. I’ll lead it away from the caves, lose it in the forest, and join you as soon as I can. Now go! GO!” She heaves her backpack into the cave, casts a spell, and darts off toward the minotaur before turning to lure it away.
