Here. but I guess I'm a little confused. This is my first game in this format - why are there two places to post for this game? I wouldn't have found this at all if I hadn't checked the feeds since it's not mentioned on the main recruitment thread.

And is there any way to follow these forums by e-mail rather than having to check the website for new messages? There doesn't seem to be a subscription command.

We're all here, so let's start

The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: “Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.”

The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.

“Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!” With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. “Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.

“But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix,” he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, “Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation"

Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, “Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six
months go,while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw
another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the hillmen.”

Master Shaine hops to his feet. “Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.” With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

Lunaea has some background knowledge about the region: The Kortos mounts stand at the center of the isle of Kortos. Entire tribes of harpies, centaurs and minotaurs can be found around the mounts. They constantly vie for territory. Harpies can be found mostly at higher altitudes, while centaurs control the lower foothills.

Her obvious awe and excitement at being given a mission by the Master of Scrolls himself somewhat dampened by what she has recalled of Kortos, Lunaea quietly confers with Brodey, "I've seen drawings of such creatures in the library, but have you ever ... dealt with such yourself?"

"Seems simple enough I suppose. Anything you suggest we have for the confirmation?" Anara ask Janira, inspecting her belongings. I think I got everything...

Brodey looks about the group. Damn...were we wrong about Pathfinders being a bunch of old sticks. Room full of dangerous, smart and hot women...and who'd think halflings would want to do this job. Crap, stay professional you idiot!

Brodey attempts to cover his distraction and focus on what Lunaea is asking him.

I've not met such a critter, they didn't exactly get invited to the Manor and I sure didn't see them doing Guild work in the city, but I think I saw something in the training somewhere. What was it now....

Not quite, that's where you come in. The only known permanent surface settlement of gillmen is found in Escadar. Why they would venture into the foothills of the Kortos Mounts is a mystery.

It turns out that this adventure actually describes what the moon phase is: it is almost full moon.

Janira pulls out a large leather-bound journal and opens it on the table. “Before we set out, we should all get to know each other and review our plan. After all, the most important factors that determine whether an expedition will be a success are cooperation and preparation! I’ll go first!”

My name is Janira Gavix, and I joined the society nearly four years after coming of age. I joined to see the world and sample all of the fine food it has to offer. I did change that view quite quickly, though, and now I focus mostly on the preservation of knowledge. I hope to have one of my reports published in the Pathfinder Chronicles some day.

Brodey looks down and talks into the floor, obviously uncomfortable. He speaks in a Taldoran accent more commonly heard from servants than the nobles or the street.

"I um...look I know you all are learned scholars and such. Certainly Miss Lunaea is. Me, I don't read so well and my education taught me a lot more about keeping people safe and their mounts comfortable than anything about gods or demons or ancient cultures."

voice rises a bit as he warms to the topic

"I've seen good and bad in the great and the mighty though, and those that value history, beautiful things and respect the ways of foreigners make everything around them better. Folks get treated better, not treated like property. Sure you gotta work, but that's the deal. And the Pathfinders seem like those kinds, not the other."

voice trails off and he mumbles the rest into the floor, blushing

" Anyway when Miss Lunaea came to the Guild for a protector, I thought I could maybe help. It isn't like Pathfinders don't stick their noses into dangerous places and often don't pay attention to the risks much..no offense. So here I am. My head feels stuffed with all that training but and I guess we'll find out very soon if I have what it takes to do the job."

Lunaea gives Brodey a glowing smile as if to reassure him. "Well, I'm glad you're here!"

Her silver hair and robes shining in the moonlight streaming through the window of the tavern in the dim light of pre-dawn, she gathers her courage and introduces herself: "I'm Lunaea, and I'm so excited to finally have a mission after so many months of waiting! Not like there weren't many wonderful things to see and learn at the Pathfinder Society, of course!"

"Oh, let's see. Why did I join? Well, I had already explored Tandor by night. That was fun... but my parents, well they... kind of... eliminated anything that might be scary or dangerous. I was young, you know? I spent a lot of hours in the study learning about all the creatures of the world, and I guess I... just wanted actually to see them. The library here is ever so much more wonderful, but I'm ready to get back out into the world!"

A little nightingale hops out of the hood of her cloak onto her shoulder and sings a beautiful melodic greeting that sounds thrushlike, with hints of Sylvan. Lunaea smiles, "...and this is Nightsong."

Quarr turns in his chair as he is instantly enraptured by the group of charismatic pathfinders.

"Greetings, my name is Quarr" the halfling states with a small bow to the group. "I may not have a lot of experience as this is my first mission set forth with the society, although my main passion is in researching and documenting everything that crosses my path."

Anara does a quick spin throwing her kukri flying high in the air, and bows catching the spinning weapon behind her back as it falls.

"Anara Resario at your service. What's not to like about the society? Intrigue, adventure, new people. The pathfinder Society seems like the sort of place where you get to take part in the adventures that were told around the hearth at home, how could you not want to be part of that?"

Anthea looks up from her notes on the meeting. Well since neither Quantium University or the Academae were interested in my research on traditional Arcane magic among the Shoanti tribes of eastern Varesia, the Pathfinder Society now has the benefit of my expertise.

"Cisero Albercoft at your service," he bows deeply smiling warmly at Janira and the party. "Orphaned at a young age, the majority of my youth was spent on the streets of Oppara. But that all changed when one day, while singing for coppers on the street, a great noble man, Lord Albercoft, taken by my angelic voice, recruited me to be a minstrel for his house. Treated me like a son he did and I became like one of the family. He even let me take his noble name. I am forever indebted to the Albercoft's generosity. I am joining the Pathfinder Society to bring pride to the Albercoft family and sing for the glory of Taldor."

“On to the details of the mission at hand,” Janira says with an eager grin. “After reviewing my mission reports personally, Master Shaine believes it is no coincidence that each time they entered the caves it was during a full moon, so it is also no coincidence that you have been called here now, just a day before the moon is full again. We both believe that tomorrow night is our best chance to find out why these caves are important and what exactly the gillmen are doing in there.

“The caves we’ll be travelling to lie under the base of the Kortos Mounts. We’ll need to spend every minute of daylight possible to reach the caves by foot, crossing over the Cairnlands, taking the paths to Diobel, and finally making our way through the wilderness. With any luck we won’t run into any of the local inhabitants. Once in the caves, we’ll need to work together to explore and determine whether any gillman are present or have been recently. Keep an eye out for any other clues that might hint at the caves’ significance, too.”

“Now, before we head out, if there aren’t any more questions, we should take a moment to go through your gear and make sure nothing important gets left out.”

There's still room for questions to Janira. Also, here's the time to have a look at your own gear - and that of your party. Feel free to nitpick on each other's equipment choices and provide helpful comments.

After looking over the gear of others, Brodey humbly offers to carry waterskins or bedrolls for those people who obviously had left them out of their equipments list for weight reasons.

"This will be an overnight trip, at least, and without a bedroll you will wake stiff and sore, and while a waterskin is not enough to cover all water needs for a day, filling it at each stream or spring on the way saves time and makes trail rations a lot easier to eat. They're worth the cash, and I can fit in several dozen pounds more of gear.

Miss Lunaea and I already had this conversation, some of the gear I am carrying is hers.

Brodey also considers the likely weather, and will warn about lack of cold weather clothing and winter blankets also if he thinks such gear will be needed. (taking 10 on survival for a 15, which allows predicting weather 24 hours in advance). Otherwise he won't mention it, figuring those without such gear also knew it wouldn't likely be needed.

"The instructor taught me an inexpensive trick when I got confused between demons, devils, fae and shapeshifters. He said just buy some cold iron ammunition and weapon blanch silver. Apply it to the arrows, bolts or bullets before you leave your home. If you run into something your weapon won't bite, try the prepared ammo. It'll work on most minor fiends, all fey and some shapeshifters.

then stares at the ground again

Of course if you have some other plan for such critters, with spells or whatever, that's fine. But it seemed quite cheap, only 5gp per ten ammunition, and cold iron's only a bit more expensive than normal ammunition.

Lunaea listens carefully to Brodey's advice, but finds she has nothing really to add. She sheepishly hands over about half her travel rations for him to store in his backpack, quietly apologizing that her backpack seems so much heavier than she was used to carrying on her previous nocturnal expeditions, and she probably won't need all the food she brought for a trip of only a few days.

Cisero listens to Brodey closely. This is his first time out of Oppara. Clearly he has a lot to learn.

"Weapon blanch silver and cold iron, check. Will definitely pick up some before we go. Your instructor sounds very wise. Thank you Brodey."

Turning to Janira he asks, "You mentioned that we would need to make our way through the wilderness on the way to the caves. Not that I'm afraid of course. But any idea about the local inhabitants?

Leaving Absalom, the party of seven enters the Cairnlands, a great plane outside of Absalom. Ancient reminders of great battles can be found here, and Janira points out the siege towers that are strewn across the land. As the evening sets in, the party halts and sets up camp for the night at the edge of the forest at the base of the Kortos Mounts.

The next day dawns, and the next leg of travel leads into the forest. As the foliage gets thicker, Janira pulls out a silver compass, emblazoned with the pathfinder logo: the Glyph of the Open Road. I received this Wayfinder when I successfully completed my Confirmation. Should we be successful on your journey, you will get your own as well.

As she studies the divide, the initial 'J. L.' can be see engraved on the inside of the device's lid. We're on the right path. We need to keep heading northwest past those large rocks up ahead.

Please note whatever purchases you want to make, then make an initiative roll to see how fast you'd react, should a combat start ;-)

The party comes a passage in a forest. A rock outcropping rises nearly 20 feet north of the adventurers, while a sinkhole to the west drops 10 feet. Janira was just explaining the various creatures that live in the forest, as she spots two young hippogriffs. They don't seem to take too kindly to the intrusion in their domain.

Combat! Quarr and Anthea are up. We're using block initiative, so whoever is up in a block can act (without having to wait for anyone acting before them in the same block)

Quarr, at the sight of the half-horse, half-bird creatures readies his bow, while Anthea prepares a spell (what spell?)

One of the hippogriffs swoops down on Anthea and open up a nasty gash with its beak, while the other tries to bite brodey, who is too quick for the feathery creature.

The hippogriff bears the wings, forelegs, and head of a great raptor bird and the tail and body of a magnificent horse. As horses are a preferred meal for griffons, sages claim some flesh-warping wizard with an ironic sense of humor long ago created this unfortunate fusion of horse and hawk as a joke.
A hippogriff's feathers bear coloration similar to those of a hawk or an eagle; however, some breeders have managed to produce specimens with stark white or coal black feathers. A hippogriff's torso and hind end are most often bay, chestnut, or gray, with some coats bearing pinto or even palomino coloration. Hippogriffs measure 11 feet long and weigh upward of 1,500 pounds.
Territorial, hippogriffs fiercely protect the lands under their domain. Hippogriffs must also watch the skies for other predators, as they are a preferred meal of griffons, wyverns, and young dragons. Hippogriffs nest in sweeping grasslands, rugged hills, and flowing prairies. Exceptionally hardy hippogriffs make their home nestled into niches on canyon walls, from which they comb the rocky deserts for coyotes, deer, and the occasional humanoid. Hippogriffs prefer mammalian prey, yet they graze after every meal of flesh to aid their digestion. Their dietary habits can be dangerous to both ranchers and their livestock, so ranching communities often set bounties on them. Victims of these hunts are often taxidermied, and preserved hippogriffs frequently decorate frontier taverns and remote outposts.
Far easier to train than griffons, yet easily as intelligent as horses, hippogriffs are trained as mounts by some elite companies of mounted soldiers, patrolling the skies and swooping down on unsuspecting enemies. Although they are magical beasts, if captured young, hippogriffs can be trained using Handle Animal as if they were animals. An adult hippogriff is more difficult to train, and attempts to do so follow the normal rules for training magical beasts using the skill. A hippogriff saddle must be specially crafted so as to not impact the movement of the creature's wings—these saddles are always exotic saddles.
Hippogriffs lay eggs rather than birthing live young—as a general rule, a hippogriff nest only contains one egg at a time. A hippogriff's egg is worth 200 gp, but a healthy young hippogriff is worth 500 gp. A fully trained hippogriff mount can command prices of up to 5,000 gp or more. A hippogriff can carry 198 pounds as a light load, 399 pounds as a medium load, and 600 pounds as a heavy load.

Anthea hit the approaching Hippogriff with an acid spell, searing the feather of the majestic creature. That was your spell for last round - you can post another action for the current round.

Brodeys excellent reflexes allowed him to get his Guisarme up in time, but unfortunately, his aim was slightly off. Changing his guisarme for a greatsword doesn't do him much good either, and his powerful swing misses the mark.
