Valeros nods. "I too, do not claim to be a hero...in my experiences, one who claims to be one, rarely is. I can only try to be the best warrior I can be, trying to help others and those in need to the best of my ability. And trying to restore Honaria Alcaste's honor seems a worthy cause to me..."
Aid Another Diplomacy (Estra): 1d20 ⇒ 4
DM Elan Morin |
Your words convince Soldier's Glory of the worthiness of your cause:"I see. By your actions you experienced the asperity of the Hero's path so I trust you enough to lend you my aid for your quest"
Then the swords speaks again, sounding concerned:"But what is this talk about restoring Honaria's honor? Honaria Alcasti was an hero, tested and true. She was fierce in battle yet merciful and humble in victory. After vanquishing her opponents on the field of battle she even convinced a whole enemy battalion to join her forces just by treating the prisoners with respect. And she was a genius tactician. Taldor would never have lost the war if only she were given the resources she desperately needed to implement her strategies! So... who's besmirching such a great woman's memory exactly???"
You have convincced Soldier's Glory to support your cause. This intelligent sword is pretty formidable for lvl 1 characters. Check the handouts for her stats. Btw is any of you LG?
Once the sword agrees to help your cause you travel back to the Ghazali family estate where Aayef rejoins his tearful mother. The woman is overjoyed and immediately agrees to keep her end of the bargain giving back to you the ownership of Soldier's Glory.
Aayef seems happy to be back home although he doesn't seem discouraged and expresses the intention of doing his best to grow up as a responsible noble doing his part in the interest of his subjects.
From the outskirts of Omash you travel back to Oppara where you meet with your employer. Remaio is relieved to see the blade, and he asks if the rumors about the blade being enchated are true. This question is answered by Glory herself who wastes no time lecturing the descendant of Honaria's Alcasti on the necessity of restoring her previous owner's good name. Ance she's done Remaio agrees "to lend" you Soldier's Glory and takes his leave commenting he'll soon be in touch for your next assignment...
3rd mission accomplished. The next one to follow shortly
DM Elan Morin |
Along with his missive (see handouts) Remaio provides you with a map of Andoran’s countryside and pays for your transportation costs. You travel by boat to Almas you take a carriage west, across the Carpenden Plains, along increasingly narrow roads.
Along the way you pass dozens of small farming villages. Vereena’s homestead is isolated, several miles from the nearest village and you need to complete the last part of your jurney on foot walking on narrow paths that can barely fit a single horse.
Fields of overgrown crops surround a squat, shingle-roofed farmhouse. A pair of clay pots filled with cheerful yellow marigolds stands to either side of the house’s front door. Broken boards covered in graffiti are nailed over the door and windows.
DM Elan Morin |
New map is up. You are right outside the farm's backyard. The main door is where the red dot is. Please roll perception
Iconic Otha |
Valeros walks up to the boarded up door and bangs on it...he also truest to see if there are any cracks in the boards on the windows, attempting to look in...
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Amiri, Kinslayer |
Amiri seems glad to be out of the desert and off of a boat, walking through terrain more familiar to her.
"If this is some sort of museum," She offers, ducking under a low hanging branch over what amounted to a trail. "As Remaio said, then she sure isn't getting many visitors out here."
As the house finally comes into view, she eyes it speculatively. "No, not many at all." She confirms.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
She follows Valeros through the front gate, but stands back from the doorway. Instead she rests on a nearby barrel to wait, while the others talk to the farmlady.
Cwethan's Iconic |
Estra examines the farmhouse with a skeptical eye, then focuses to draw Honaire forth from her mind as a spectre.
Dear, would you be so good as to poke your head in there to see if anything is amiss?
The good knight does so, granting the party the peculiar sight of his hindquarters abruptly ending in the wall, while he examines the interior.
Honaire's Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
DM Elan Morin |
You notice how the wooden walls and floors of the structure, though ancient, are well cared for and appear to be in good condition. However, all of the windows are boarded over, as is the door. The barred door has a break DC of 25.
The painted words across the boards sre written in a language not immediately familiar to you.
A rusty tin bell hangs from a bit of twine near the door.
Barrels and bales of hay populate the scrubby yard. The fence has lost a few plankes, here and there, and it's apparent they were used to cover the windows and doors of the farmhouse. You also spot a mound of recently disturbed dirt in the southern corner of the yard.
Erasmus also notices the terrain near the farm's back door looks like a pit's been digged out right in front of it.
DM Elan Morin |
Amiri, Kinslayer |
don't think I want to dig around too much in the dirt to make a heal check... so will just take a 10: 10 + 1 = 11
"Was gonna be concerned at the ghost giving the old lady a heart attack..." Amiri says absently. "But someone might have beat you to it."
"Assuming that's her." She adds, pointing at the mound of dirt with the dead woman buried in it.
She ponders Valeros' observation about kobolds and shrugs, putting her hand on the sword. "Might be best we go in and check."
Erasmus the Iconic |
Linguistics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
"Well, let's go get the murdering kobolds!"
"Yes! Something to fight that doesn't have eight legs."
DM Elan Morin |
As per Amiri suggestion you agree on doing a little "breaking and entering". You need to decide HOW to do that though...
The barred door has a break DC of 25. The door in the backyard is not barred as it's apparently in use by the farm inhabitants, both doors are secured with rusty but efficient locks (Disable Device DC15)
Megalister? Are you still with us?
Cwethan's Iconic |
Unless one of you knows something about tickling locks, we should just have the muscly one break down the back door
Amiri, Kinslayer |
Hmm.. I thought we were at the back door. Is the little red dot the pit?
Amiri frowns slightly, as she goes over to the unbarred door, stepping over the pit that Erasmus pointed out.
"Someone buried her." She mentions, nodding back towards the dead woman in the shallow grave. "So might still be someone else in there."
She shrugs. "Unless kobolds are the type to bury the dead."
She briefly tries the door, then leans back and lashes out at it with one heavy-booted foot.
breaking it down...

rage and try again!
Advanced Barbarian Door Opening Services: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 2 = 14
She will then enter the home, sword in hand.
DM Elan Morin |
@ Amiri]You are in the backyard which has a door, unbarred but with a rusty lock on it and probably has a trap before the entrance. There's also another door, which would be the main door of the farm IF it wasn't locked AND barred like all the windows are. That's where the red dot is
Erasmus the Iconic |
"Don't look at me to open the lock. My sister is firmly seated, and my uncle is sleeping." Erasmus shrugs at the resistant door.
DM Elan Morin |
Amiri struggles against the back door but despite her might it creaks but it refuses to break down...
Cwethan's Iconic |
Oh just hit it with your big swords already! Valeros, you shouldn't use your new sword, she seems fussy.
HE Meligaster |
Apologies, friends. Had a hectic weekend and a malfunctioning router causing no small amount of trouble.
Meligaster stands at the ready behind Amiri, sword-cane drawn in one hand, twirling it idly as he awaits the inevitable success of the brutish woman's endeavor.
"I do so hope this little task, at last, will go smoothly, though it is sufficient to say that things are not hopeful in that regard."
DM Elan Morin |
The module does not give a break DC for the rear door, but it's not barred so the difficulty to break it open should be less than 25 (the break DC of the front door). And since there's no sign of anything contrary to it being a simple wooden door...
Amiri second attempt at forcing the door open breaks the planks with a loud crashing sound of wood creaking and then giving way to the barbarian's formidable strength.
As you enter, carefully avoiding the pit trap someone dug in front of the door, as Honaire described a broken grandfather clock on the southern wall announces the hour with a distorted chime. Shards of glass carpet the western half of the room around a series of shattered display cases. Paintings and tapestries cover the walls from floor to ceiling. Jagged rips and tears deface a grand painting of a heavily armored human woman slaying a red dragon.
You search among the vandalized goods of what could have once been a museum and Among find a silver signet ring depicting the pegasus sigil of House Alcasti, a gilded buckler and a mahogany case of calligraphy pens bearing the same symbol.
You can also see inside the nearby room: Thick rugs cover baseboards worn smooth by years of occupation. An unfinished meal sits on a polished oak table. Broken dishes and overturned bookshelves chairs clutter the floor. Books and sheaves of parchment are stacked haphazardly in and around the fireplace, some charred beyond recognition.

"Hope that's not it."

DM Elan Morin |
Estra doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary and so does Honaire, but Erasmus, Amiri and Valeros spot a wax seal with a pegasus motif on one of the papers in the fireplace.
After checking it out they conclude that this motif matches the wax seal on the letter from Remaio that the PCs received when asked to work for the Taldan would be nobleman and by inspecting the documents more closely they discover a letter signed “Countess Honaria Alcasti”.
What do you want to do? Spend some more time searching the place and trying to collect the documents you need, finish exploring the farm or do something else entirely?
Cwethan's Iconic |
For now we might as well spend the time to search this place, Honaire, do be a dear and keep an eye out for any invading Kobolds.
Honaire will drift outside to keep watch.

There's more to check out?
Oh! Another room! Guess one should check out the map on occasion!
"What's to search? We found what we came for, didn't we?" She asks, her voice uncertain.
She walks over to the barred front door, and lifts the plank blocking its use, opening it to look out.
"The old lady's dead." She adds with a shrug. "Is anyone really going to come out here to the middle of nowhere to lay claim now."
She shrugs.
"Still, if we need to go through her unmentionables to be sure, those're probably in here." She goes and opens the last remaining door inside the home, fully expecting an old woman's bedroom.
Erasmus the Iconic |
"There should be more than this," says Erasmus, "Unless Remaio was sorely mistaken about his cousin's work."
He continues to search the home.

DM Elan Morin |
As Amiri opens the door 2 things happen: she and Valeros are suddenly bombarded with a veritable rainfall of pitchforks and other farming instruments and all of you hear savage screaming coming out of what looks like it was a once-tidy bedroom, whose furnishings have been pushed against one wall. A pile of assorted objects seeps out from under an unmade bed. A framed painting of a verdant pasture hangs askew on the southern wall. A band of kobolds clad in ill-fitting cloaks and helmets, probably stolen from an Eagle Knight outpost, yells in your direction daring you to enter their den... among their hissing you seem to understand words like "freedom" and "democracy"...
So... first we resolve the trap
Trap Attack roll vs Amiri: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 -> Damage Roll: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Trap Attack roll vs Valeros: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 -> Damage Roll: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Then we proceed with initiative
Initiative check (Erasmus): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Initiative check (Estra): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Initiative check (Honaire): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Amiri gives a startled yelp as the old woman's bedroom she was expecting, turns out to be fortified by irate socially-conscious kobolds that she was not!
With an angry snarl, she stomps into the room pulling her sword out as she goes, heading towards the kobold in the back, trusting the others to cover her.
Melee vs yellow, rage: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7, for 2d8 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 5) + 6 + 3 = 18 damage.
Unfortunately, in her haste, she almost trips over what looks like a soup tureen that has spilled out with the rest of the items under the bed, and her sword does more damage to the back wall then any of the small foes.

Attack roll (Green vs Amiri): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20 -> Damage roll: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Valeros steps near the door and slashes at the reddish kobold, his first attack fails due to his position. Not so the second one who beheads the poor kobold.
Meanwhile Honaire makes himself intangible and floats inside the bedchamber causing the blue kobold to cower in terror...
The remaining reptilian revolutionnaires don't give up easily though. With a scream sounding souspiciously like "FOR FREEDOM!" they throw themselves ta their opponents...
