Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

Feel free to post a character introduction, and get to know each other in character and your abilities.

Very, Very rarely have the pathfinders seen what is in front of them. A letter, a missive, marked with the seal of all three masters. Signed by Marcos Farabellus, the missive orders you to travel, expenses paid, to Kalsgard, the capital of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. The trip is uneventful, and comfortable, which to any experienced pathfinder is more worrying than comforting.

Soon enough, the team arrives at the moderate, homey lodge and guided in to a central war room. A Map of region is laid out before them, as well as a platter of food and wine. You are advised by a particularly nervous attendant that the Masters, emphasizing the plural, will be back soon, but wanted to oversee the shipment of The Item Personally. If asked what The Item is, the attendant is unable to say, though he expresses the natural pathfinder curiosity.

He let's each pathfinder go in to wait for the return of the Masters.

Vermin is quite the traveling companion. Standing almost 7 feet tall he is large, for even a orc, and that accounts for only half of his racial make up. He is well muscled and quite graceful for his size. His armor seems to be made up of alchemically strengthened plates of basalt stone. Dwarven runes are etches into each piece and it looks quite heavy. Under the armor he wears what can be identified as druid vestments. He is armed with over a half dozen weapons that includes a silver sickle, great axe and cold iron scimitar. But what is most striking about him is the large dinosaur that follows him around like a pet dog. This Allosaurus has a strangely intelligent gleam in its eye and seems to understand much of what is said.

During the course of the journey you find that the half orc speaks dwarven, elven, and even gnomish quite fluently and can speak them along with the common tongue even when he is transformed in to an animal, something he insists on doing during the sailing part of the journey. Sometimes he swims as a dolphin alongside the ship as sometimes he flies above the ship in eagle form.

Over the course of the trip his companions learn that he is an accomplished healer (+10 Heal )and has a keen eye for things (+17 Perception). He is at ease in most any outdoors settings and seems to know just what to do to make even the harshest of weather comfortable (+17 survival) Vermin is friendly and even a bit playful. He is never late for a meal and likes to drink with the crew after dinner, but never to excess.

A fine example of a dwarf, his facial hair lustrous and well-kempt, with braids and clasps, strokes his brown beard as he considers the mission.

The hair on the top of his head is swept back, while the sides are shaved and tattooed with elaborate blue runes.

As they wait for the others, he looks up at Vermin, evidently with mixed feelings.

"Ye dornt typically see dwarven runes oan armur fur folks ay yer size. Ye must have hud a dwarven armorer, aye?"

Sword and board fighter, hopefully will be up front giving and taking punishment. Not much for skills except perception and survival.
Please don't mind the scottish accent. ;P

Its true friend dwarf. Vermin says in a surprising eloquent manner. I helped to recover pieces of the sky key, and for that help a dwarven king offered to make a set of stoneplate normally reserved for dwarven druids. He claimed it took twice the stone as normal to fit me.

Jothas is a fairly large human of Varisian decent. He wears a well made suit of Full plate, with a shield held on his back. He seems oddly ill equipped with just a whip at his side for armament.

He's generally a nice enough to his fellow Pathfinders, but when one of the crew of the vessel taken to Kalsgard practically knocked him overboard, he dressed him down in a downright scary fashion.

He's fairly adept in matters of survival, but nothing like Vermin.

Bauble is an odd looking fellow. He is short and wars this grotesque mask over his face. About the only thing you can see of it are filed teeth through the mouth hole. He speaks in a loud squeaky voice that is quite irritating.

As for combat readiness he wears a mithral shirt and carries a scimitar and moves with the grace of a dex fighter.

"Bauble here! FOOD!"

With that short, impolite introduction he starts digging into the food with an appalling lack of manners.

Bauble is a dex based Magus. My first attempt at one when they came out and I basically followed the suggestions in the forums and did the whole Shocking Grasp schtick. He is a Tarzanesque character that was brought up by goblins instead of wolves so expect some subdued goblin craziness from him - though he has 'matured' because of pathfinder influence.

A few minutes later, the door swings open again, seemingly on its own...until in floats a beautiful, if unusually spindly and alarmingly pale, Gnomish woman wearing ornate Qadiran mage's garb and a palpably imperious expression, atop a nightmarish serpentine monster with iridescent black-and-white stripes, that drifts lazily through thin air.

As the team settles in, Marcos Farabellus steps in, carrying something in a lockbox under his arm. Aram Zey follows behind, a spring in his step.

Marcos walks up to the table and sets the lockbox down and after fiddling with some locks, opens the thing to reveal a ancient tome. Written on it's cover is something in the language of giants. Aram Zey grins almost maniacally and claps his hands.

THIS! This my dear agents is none other than "A treatise on power and strength in regards to giants and their forefathers, venerable titans of history". Or, "The Book of Titans" for short.

He nearly caresses the book as Marcos continues.

Now, despite the title, this book isn't just a history. It is said that anyone who follows it's instructions, follows the rituals held within, and reads the tome from front to back, will be granted a titan's strength.

Aram interrupts.

And not just a magic enchantment! Oh no! A real, physical, inherent increase in strength to that of a giant! Bypassing all the usual issues with layering magicks upon a person! Such an exciting proposal!

Marcos nods, a little peeved at the interruption.

Of course, if it was that easy, we wouldn't have asked you to come. Not only are some of these rituals so esoteric that they've escaped Master Zey's expertise, but for them to work it must be preformed by someone with Giant's blood. As you can imagine, getting a giant to agree to cast rituals on folks for our study has been... a difficult proposal.

Zey grins again and claps.

That's where I come in! I have a friend of a friend of a friend of a cousin of a nephew of a friend of a acquaintance of none other than the Giant Wizard Zoarth! He has agreed to meet you and inspect the book! He may even be willing to cast the ritual with some convincing!

Marcos closes the lock box over the book again raps a knuckle on it.

This thing is FAR to valuable to entrust to anything but some of our best. Take it to Zoarth, convince him to show you the rituals, or preferably cast them, and take detailed notes, and report back. If we can, Master Zey will see if there is a way to replicate those effects.

He looks at the pathfinders with his patented steely gaze and wide smile.

I know you can do it. The Masters all have faith in you. Now, do you have any questions before you head out?

Marcos looks a little worried to let Bauble look at the book, but inside is lots of pretty pictures... and drawings and designs. They mean absolutely nothing to bauble though. They are kinda pretty.

Zey responds to the others.

We have no for sure reason to trust Zoarth, other than his reputation speaks that he doesn't hate little folk like us. Which is a step better than most giants. As for where he lives, he lives in his floating castle above the mountains nearby. Hence why we had you meet us here. It's going to be some rough travel getting there, but once you do he's not to hard to find. His castle is mostly placed there to keep people from bothering to going to it than actively dangerous to reach.

Babule looks around weighing his chances at being able to get his colored pencils out and have some fun with the book, but Marcos already seems a bit on edge concerning the book and between him and Bauble's sword, The Black Lord, he decides not to color in any of the pretty pictures. At least not now.

When he hears 'floating castle' he perks right up and forgets the book.

My apologies for being slow to post - the new semester just started and things have been hectic. I'll get my stat block up online later tonight.

A rather handsome halfling fellow hurriedly enters the room riding a large armored griffon. "I do beg your pardons! Terribly late and it won't do at all - they kept us late at the monastery for some final bits of training -" he experimentally tries a few practice karate kicks of his short little legs but from the saddle it's hard to imagine them doing much to anyone - "but I'm afraid that I'm still getting the hang of it. They tell me that my foot is as good as any lance, but I'll have to admit I've got my doubts..."

He hops down from the saddle and bows low to the assembled pathfinders and venture captains. "But where are my manners? I am Mr. Proudefeets at your service - no, I beg your pardon, I keep forgetting, Sir Mr. Proudefeets now it is, though I'll admit it still rolls a bit strangely off the tongue. It was very nice of those Andorens to knight me, but I can't seem to get used to the formality of it all, not after a lifetime of just simply being Mr. Proudefeets."

Proudefeets continues on in this rather talkative vein for quite some time, while the griffon looks on with a bored expression that suggests that if it could chew its cud - if it had cud - it would.

"... so that's when I realized that those snotty knights of Iomedae back in Vigil would never truly respect me - a humble" - the griffon appears to roll its eyes - "paladin of Chaldira, until I had earned a bit of glory - all for the cause of truth, justice, etc. of course - and ever since me and Griff here -" he gestures to the griffon - "been adventuring up and down the length of Golarion, though for the past few months I've been sequestered off in a monastery learning some monkly ways..."

"But enough about me! Where are we going? Ooh, a floating castle to meet a wizard giant! Sounds great! What could possibly go wrong?!?"

Sir Mr. Proudefeets pauses for a moment, as if considering the question he had just posed. "Um, well, actually, I don't suppose we know much about this giant wizard do we? What kind of giant is he?"

Ready to go.

Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

You know from the map that it will take about 2 weeks marching to get there. I will assume that you provision yourself accordingly.
The trip is fairly uneventful and short. Mostly marching with the occasional in stop. The mountains become worse, but at least the trails are well kept, and only a few places require touchy maneuvering to continue the climb. The road up the mountain—such as it is—has been entirely free of other travelers until now. Further ahead, four massive humanoids coifed in chain hauberks and carrying gigantic clubs studded with nails and barbs trudge up the road. Each is accompanied by a spike-collared wolf the size of a small horse. A fifth wolf, closer to the size of an elephant and draped in chain armor, walks ahead of the group. A group of bulging, bald men—large, but smaller than the armored giants—brings up the rear, carrying something large and heavy between them. They’re wearing the same spiked collars as the wolves.

While some of the wolves notice the team, the giants grumble something and keep moving ahead on the trail... though they do take up most of it, and then some.

Giant:
Ignore tiny ones. Work to do. Must smash castle... brothers need more rocks!

No combat... yet. Please place your character on the trail where you would like to be and fill in your init sheet for me.

Knowlege Local DC13:
The bald headed men are Ogres. Stupid, mean, and strong, but can be bullied into working for others who are stronger.

Knowlege Local DC17:
The larger warriors are Hill Giants. Known for being large, mean, spiteful, and very good at throwing very large rocks.

Sweeping by on his mount, Proudefeets uses his paladin senses to survey the creatures below. All of them radiate a faint aura of evil on them, except the wolves... however, as a experianced Paladin, Proudefeets is well aware that just because an animal isn't evil doesn't mean it won't bite, and bite hard if it's master directs it.

Clandelve gets a good look at the crew... all of them are armed and armored, even the wolves, and it's clear their setting off to battle. There doesn't seem to be much to it other than that.

"Those dire wolves, on the other hand...fine specimens. Vicious killers. Especially that one, in the back. It has more than just size. It has poise, respectability, proper *power*. A fine foe, it could be."

Bauble seems a bit disappointed that the big man is not a paladin of
Raggythrall, but not for long.

"Maybe we follow giants? See if they are gooood giants or baaaad giants. Maybe we help smash or maybe we fight. Bauble like both."

While the team chats with each other, some of the wolves howl and tug at their leashes. The giants mutter and yank them back into line... but the smaller wolves howls have attracted the attention of the larger one, who turns and peers over the ogres and their load... and you can almost swear it's smiling. One of the Giant's barks at it.

Giant:
Friakas! Go smash castle! Join brothers! No eat!

In response, the giant wolf snaps at the smaller giant, who backs away, sufficiently cowed by the great beast. It doesn't take a sense motive check that the wolf is eyeing the team with a vicious hunger.

Lucija's knowledge of nature is high enough that she realizes that this animal isn't just big and tough, but also smart... maybe not sentient smart, but smart enough to not be bossed around by the giants and to act on it's own.

Just realized that the "Giant" spoiler refers to if you know the Giant language - which Mr. P does not - so I should not have read the first spoiler (and I haven't read the second one), so please disregard his remarks about the giants planning to attack a castle.

Sensing that combat may be about to break out, Mr. P taps himself with a wand of Saddle Surge and then restows the wand.

As he speaks he will cast Barkskin on himself and Bull's strength on Sparky, both extended from his rod.

Tell them no in a firm voice. Vermin explains. Offer food if they persist. And smack them good, preferably doing non-lethal damage if you have to.

Vermin will not be upset if you kill the dire wolves if he thinks it was necessary. You might win his favor if you use some non-lethal damage to save them. He would grow angry if someone kills them for little or no reason.

Jothas experimentally tries Vermin's tactic and channels the wolf whisperer. It's poor little nose is bopped firmly with the whip and it demoralized, turning tail and running off into the woods.

I will assume no one is heartless enough to attack a fleeing wolf, so I went ahead and removed it from combat.

A few questions and points of clarification:

First, Proudefeets initiative should be 4 lower. He did not have Heightened Awareness active (I had that notation in my tagline as a reminder for when he does have it active - but I can see that's confusing and have removed it.

Second, he does have Mounted Combat and to my surprise there doesn't seem to be any language that indicates that it wouldn't work to negate a critical hit. However, he's flat-footed and you can't take immediate actions when you are flat-footed, so that's not an option.

Third, however I'm a bit confused about how the Giant Wolf (Frakas?) could reach him in the first place. I thought I had said that I was flying high enough that they could not reach me. Looking back, I see that technically I said that I was flying high enough that the *giants* couldn't reach me so I guess that's a goof on my part, but I still wonder how the wolf could reach me and still attack. It looks like it moved 85' and, barring some special ability, couldn't have charged through its allies and the cart. Assuming that it has a move speed of 85', there's also the question of whether it also would have needed to squeeze to get past the cart (which I think would add another 30' of required movement, for a total move of 115'). I don't mean to be second-guessing you and of course you are the GM and I will defer to your rulings (and also, perhaps there's some shenanigans at work that I'm not aware of - maybe the Giant Wolf has a fly speed?), but I just wanted to double-check since that crit hit Griff pretty good.

Fourth, since it seems like it will be relevant, can you please tell us how tall the ogres, giants, dire wolves, and Frakas all are? And what sort of reach they seem to be attacking with? For example, how far away from Griff is Frakas now (on the map they are adjacent, but Griff is up 30' in the air)? I'm asking because I'll need to know to calculate how high to be in order to be able to charge (ideally, I'll always be at least 20' away from any target, letting me charge 10' and lance-attack from 10' away).

Fifth, as far as I can tell, do any of our foes appear to be enslaved (or controlled) by any of the others? Mr. P has a Liberty's Edge faction boon: "Freedom Fighter: Gain a +1 bonus on attack rolls and weapon damage rolls against known slavers. For the purposes of this reward, a slaver is a creature that owns at least 5 slaves, is maintaining a compulsion spell or effect to control a creature for at least one day, or is explicitly cited as trafficking slaves." Of course, it's quite possible that Mr. P just doesn't know, but I'm asking because it sort of sounds like the ogres and dire wolves may be the giants' chattel? No worries if this is unclear to Mr. P.

Sorry to post at such length and will wait to act until I know my new place in the initiative order and the outcome of my questions.

It's okay, though for space reasons please post big clarifications like this in the future in the discussion thread.

1st: Eh, what's done is done, I thought you had done it with bauble, I'm not gonna mess with it now.
2nd:Bummer.
3rd: The Frakas has been slowly approaching for the past 2 posts. Technically he started about only 20 feet or so away from you. If I did not make that clear, I apologize, that's my fault. However, the wolf is huge size, and thus takes up a 15 ft by 15 ft cube, plus has a 15 foot reach. I assumed it would have to make a minor DC 5 jump check to reach and attack griff for an attack, but didn't roll it because... well, with it's bonuses for the bunch of templates it has it can't fail it.
4th: The giants and wolves occupy 10ft by 10ft cubes with appropriate reach. Frakas is a size category larger, so he takes up 15 by 15 with appropriate reach.
5th: It may be a reasonable assumption that the giants are slavers. They're just slavers with evil slaves who will help them out in this case. Ogre's have difficulty with "Liberty" as a concept.

Ok, sounds good, thanks for the clarification.

Preferring to fight from a greater distance, Mr. P rides away from the gruesome wolf-giant, while eyeing it with curiosity. He reaches down and pats Griff reassuringly.

Mr P move action: detect evil on Frakas (I assume it was outside the range of my prior scan); standard action: Lay on Hands on Griff: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 2) = 4

Griff full-round action: Withdraw, moving to a height of 40'.

Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

Mr P tries to get a better read on the giant wolf, but still can't see any evil in it's soul. Much to his frustration, it is not demonic, or a thing of evil, nor tainted by forces beyond the veil... it is simply a very aggressive, very large, very mean wolf.

Bauble casts one of his favorite spells, a DC 19 pukey fart cloud (complete with the expected verbal component) and then laughs uproariously if it works. See grey circle on map for where he centers it. This is assuming the map is up to date. If the big wolf is over more to the northwest, he will center it more to the east to catch as many opponents as possible.

Then he rides forward a bit to get closer to the action. I think I should put a mount icon out there for his phantom steed. Anyone got one?
