Seven years later...

The fall rains have come early this year, and a chill wind blows off the waters of Absalom’s harbor, bringing with it the smell of a storm somewhere far off at sea. Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng hurries down the street in a most unusual outfit for the aging Venture-Captain: some sort of blue military uniform complete with a green sash displaying a pair of ornate medals and a black umbrella.

Ah, there you all are, he half-mutters to himself.

Is everyone here?

Without waiting for an answer, he turns on his heels and heads off at a brisk pace, occasionally turning around to make sure everyone is keeping up.

Lilia recognizes that Drenge is wearing a dress uniform of a junior officer in the Taldan Navy. When Radayah looks closer, she also notices that he is wearing two service medals: a Combat Action Ribbon and a Counter-Espionage Ribbon, the latter of which is rumored to only be awarded to members of the Lion Blades, Taldor’s secretive espionage organization.

You’re probably wondering where I’m dragging you, eh? Seven years ago I sent you, as young agents, on a preliminary exploration of the necropolis below the Drownyard in the Precipice Quarter. The Drownyard is the name that was given to the old Tri-Towers School, once home to some of Absalom’s wealthiest progeny. It was destroyed in the great earthquake of 4698 ar, and we thought that all of the children, teachers, and staff had perished.

Drenge says regretfully, as he paces through the street.

But let me back up a bit. Eight years ago, the Society discovered an ancient necropolis under the Drownyard. It dates back to the third century ar, and if you know anything about Absalom’s history, you’ll know that we know almost nothing about those early years. It took me almost an entire year of negotiating with the parents of the children who died in the Tri-Towers Yard to convince them to grant us access to the site, and when we did, what did we find? A lot of spooky stuff: undead, haunts, and some nasty bugs.

He stops speaking for a moment, your boots splashing in the mud the only sounds on the streets besides the rain.

But we also found something completely unexpected: a survivor. A little slip of a girl named Junia Dacilane somehow survived in a death-like state for 10 years. The only thing that kept her alive was a ring of sustenance that she had found among the crypts. Junia’s mother, Lady Miranda Dacilane, was of course beside herself when we pulled her living daughter from the ruins and she vowed to not only give the Society full access to the property, but personally underwrite our archaeological efforts there. Soon thereafter I set up an archaeological dig at the Drownyard, and we’ve been pulling out fascinating fragments from Absalom’s early history ever since. Every year I visit Lady Dacilane to renew our contract to maintain the dig, but this year it seems that she wants us to jump through an additional hoop...

He pauses, then turns around to face you.

She wants us, or rather you, to escort her daughter back to the Drownyard. It seems that Junia’s become a bit obsessed with her alma mater, and since the Precipice Quarter is no place for pampered young noblewomen, she needs an escort. Think you can manage that?

Without giving you a chance to interrupt him, he quickly adds:

Oh, and don’t forget to call the Drownyard the Tri-Towers Yard while we’re at Dacilane Manor. No one who lost children in the earthquake likes to be reminded of that tragedy… even the ones who got their child back.

You may all roll a knowledge (History) or (Local) to now more about the events at the Tri-towers yard, and everything that happened after you explored it.

You walk on as Radayah gives you a short lecture on what she has found out about the area:

The Precipice Quarter was once a wealthy neighborhood called Beldrin’s Bluff, until an earthquake in 4698 ar broke several blocks of the district into the sea and killed hundreds. After the earthquake, the people of Beldrin’s Bluff moved away. Many people in Absalom believe the district is cursed, and restless undead and vermin roam the streets at night. The most prominent locations in Beldrin’s Bluff were the Tri-Tower’s Yard, an academy for the children of Absalom’s wealthy and powerful, and the Arboretum Arcanis, which displayed rare plants from all over the Inner Sea...

...The Tri-Towers Yard is haunted. The spirits of the children who perished in the earthquake are unable to reach their final rest. For nearly a decade, a man named Deris Marlinchen, the father of one of the young victims, wandered the yard, speaking to spirits no one else could see. Since his departure seven years ago, the haunts at the old school have grown increasingly malevolent...

After approximately 10 minutes of walking through the rain, you arrive at your destination.

Dacilane Manor is an imposing four-story villa of heavy masonry with a parapet roof that is festooned with numerous leering, demonic gargoyles. After knocking on the door, a middle-aged halfling woman in a large apron answers it:

Please come in. My lady will join you momentarily in the drawing room.

The interior of Dacilane Manor is just as imposing as the outside. A wide foyer with a grand staircase leads to the second floor, while open double-doors lead into the drawing room. Heavy black draperies cover all the windows, shrouding the manor in shadows. All of the furniture in the common areas is oversized, expensive, and gothic, made of dark-stained mahogany wood.

Lady Dacilane enters a few moments after the you and Dreng have gathered in the sitting room. She is a tall, stern-looking, yet attractive Chelaxian woman with sharp features, a fair complexion, and black hair accented with gray and white. She is dressed in a well-made, floor-length black gown streaked through with crimson flames. A plainlooking silver pentagram necklace is her only jewelry. Dreng immediately jumps up to greet her, bowing and kissing her hand in a formal fashion. He then quickly introduces you before launching into a prepared speech about the importance of Lady Dacilane’s ongoing support of the Society’s activities and the many important artifacts they have been able to recover from the Tri-Towers Yard necropolis. Lady Dacilane listens politely, making a few pro-forma inquiries into several details about the management of the site, before getting to the heart of the negotiation, addressing you directly:

As I am sure Master Dreng has already informed you, I have a particular request of the Pathfinder Society this year. My daughter Junia has recently celebrated her eighteenth birthday, but she maintains a certain obsession with the traumatic events that befell her at the Tri-Towers Yard so many years ago. I have stopped her from sneaking out of the manor and visiting that place several times, and I feel that her past is keeping her from fully embracing her future. I would ask that you accompany her to the gods-forsaken Precipice Quarter and let her see her fill of the decay and misery. Perhaps those sights will cure her of her unnatural obsessions. But firstly, I would like to thank you all again for your help seven years ago. I've never had the chance to meet once more, but I am positive you will raise the bar for pathfinders all over Golarion. Do you have any questions for me?

Lady Dacilane looks concerned.

Junia did not age mentally or physically while sleeping in the crypt. It is a mystery that has never been explained. Even though we should be celebrating her twenty-eight birth year, she appears and acts like a child of eighteen.

E'li wrote:

Her concern changes to stern determination when E'li utter his own concerns:

Junia’s experiences during and after the earthquake were terrible, and they have left lasting mental scars. Despite my efforts and those of some of Absalom’s best healers, I have been unable to truly help her. Nevertheless, it is time for her to put her childhood experiences behind her and face her adult responsibilities.

Dreng ignores you, keeping his toothpaste smile intact for lady Dacilane.

Lady Dacilane smirks only so slightly; a corner of her mouth seems to twitch for a moment, before disappearing again.

Junia has a particular affection for the Pathfinder Society, most likely because it was your members who rescued her from the necropolis. It is my hope that she will be more forthcoming about her condition with you.

Lady Dacilane seems to approve of Lilia's words.

Indeed. Take her wherever she wishes within reason in the Precipice Quarter. It is a dangerous place even during daylight hours, so use your best judgment. Let her stay as long as she wishes, but bring her back before nightfall tomorrow.

Jobin doesn't seem to be affected by the remark.
I saved you, you stupid girl!, thinks Jobin. If Pharasma hasn't put me in this team, you will be still in this coffer and 4 ghouls would have been added.

Pharasma boring? J, if the rumor is true, she have Aroden has her underling! Our church prowls the world for undeath. We fight against disease and save pregnant women.

And finally we don't tell people how to live their life. So please respect us. Because we respect you.

Jobin looks at J.

"You are right, J. I am a priest of pharasma. You will like to depend on me like you depend on your mother, when your kucri will not put a scratch to a skeleton.
Just take a club J. Pharasma says that fate can't be changed. But i would like that you live longer. We never know what could happen.

and as for to be always ready. We would need a special backpack for that.

Lilia quickly slips her sleeves of many garments off and back on while J talks to Jobin, transforming the appearance of her clothes into that of Lady Dacilane's. When J turns to wink to Lilia and Radayah, Lilia's also changed her face with her realistic likeliness ability, and J looks at a full copy of her own mother.

"Lady Dacilane" scowls and point a finger at J, then speaks up with a mockery of the way nobles talk. "Junia!? Why do you say such ridiculous things in front of our guests??"

Lady Dacilane shows a big grin and her face returns to that of Lilia's human disguise. Lilia then slips her sleeves of many garments off and back on again to return her clothes to their usual appearance.

"Joking aside, J, we couldn't have saved you without Jobin," Lilia says seriously, but still with a hint of a smile. "I might even have joined the undead weren't it for him."

If not for Jobin and the others, we would not have found the ghast in the room where we found you. When the ghast had everyone on the ropes and most of us were blind and paralyzed, my summoned eagle was the one to save us all by finishing the fight." Radayah then ducks her head as if embarrassed for talking so much.

Silver Crusade

Lilia recognizes J.'s clothing as that belonging to the Eagle Knights, Andoran's elite forces.

Looking at Lilia, J. smiles and then gives her a hug, quickly followed by Radayah and ending with an awkwardly lengthy hug with Jobin.

Haha! I missed you guys. Jobin, give me your club. I'll show you why a kukri is more efficient. Lilia, I know. I also know what how daft he can be sometimes, so I thought I'd pretend a bit... Teehee. So eh.. Shall we get going?

Once out of her home, J. breathes a sigh of relief and visibly relaxes.

I haven't got out of the house much in the last couple of years.. Mom is such a scarety cat.

There are two main ways of reaching the Precipice Quarter from the Ivy District. The most direct route is through the mercantile Coins district and then along the edge of the Merchant’s Quarter. The second is through the Foreign Quarter and then through the Docks. Make me a knowledge (Local) check to know more.

While walking, J. stays close to Jobin.

So Jobin, tell me a little more about yourself. All I could find in the archives was that you're a devout undead slayer, killing evil left and right. Is that true?

After J introduces herself

Hyglak is a little surprised and happy about J's attitude and outfit. I was expecting a overprotected princess type but ... she sure looks and talks like she can handle herself ...

Out in the street

Hyglak is thankful to be out of the Lady Dacilane's Manor. "J your Mother give me the creeps. So prim an proper all the time. It is just not natural." He hands her his flask. "Now easy on that it's strong stuff."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 on J to get a feel for what this trip is really about

On the trip thru the city Hyglak briefs his companions on what Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng pulled him away for.

Secret Conversation:

He continues in a low voice, taking Hyglak apart from the others:

"I'm warning you though... although the necropolis below has been cleared of undead, the partially restored surface structure still holds a dangerous haunt. Try to stay away from there..."

he mutters,

we’ve tried to eliminate it several times, but it keep coming back. If you do need to go in there, take a look in the supply closet, you may find it useful."

after the hug

Jobin is clearly disturb by the hug. His façade cracked, unveiling both joy and surprise at the same time.

Oh you sly young woman thinks the priest. you have take a piece of my heart now.

after the question

What she had read ? I am no inquistor. that their job. I pass most of my time doing birth and dead ceremonies. Help poeple to figure out their fate.

Yes, I help to destroy some undeath and pharasma gave me power against them. But hunting them? More that they come at me and I just do my best that they return to the boneyard. I am here to give the dead caused by the society closure. This is the fate i choose.

Jobin grins at J. It is now very difficult for him to return to his old persona with her around. So, he decided to just abandon it for the moment.

"It is true that a few undeath fell under the silver light of pharasma i wield. I also there rare ability to detect the presence of undeath without casting a spell.

But saying that I am a bane against evil is a little to far. "

Jobin stops for moment. "My job consist mostly at helping people like you at accomplish their fate. Half of time, it by assisting in childbirth even if the mother is evil. The last half is by giving them the last rite and doing the best we can to leave them alone.

In between, we record what our mad prophets had said and we return the unrest to sleep. In my case, it was just a lot more than my collegues."

"But you J, why are you wearing Andorian clothes? I was thinking your family was more akin to devil."

@Hyglak: You have a feeling that this girl is trying to reconcile with her past by facing some of her fears.

J. takes a large gulp of Hyglak's jug, and immediately coughs and sneezes.

Strong stuff, indeed! *cough*. Well, Jobin, partly because my mother hates it, but also because I want to honor a past friend... he's the one that sacrificed himself so I could climb in that coffin so many years ago. So eh... where are we going first?

Jobin draws from his backpack a used book. He goes at the first page. He tries to know by questionning J if it is the boy they found in the last adventure. If so. Jobin know where to go first.

Jobin, you know they excavated the whole site, and that the boy has already gotten a proper funeral. It's highly likely that the place you found the body seven years ago no longer exists.
