GM Engleaktig |
Berosius and Tan'ia remain in the middle-to-rear of the party. They're ready to provide healing if needed.
One round has passed.
The pillar begins to rotate, firing blunt arrows everywhere!
Arak: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25, Arrow Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Girion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20, Arrow Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3
Lumnessa: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28, Arrow Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2
Thankfully, the module specifically says: "all targets in the chamber." Since we're playing rules as written, Harrow, Berosius, and Tan'ia are exempt from attack! For now...
Arak, Girion, and Lumnessa are caught in the first wave of arrows. Fortunately, they all received glancing blows from the blunted missiles.
The party is up! This is round 1. The pillar continues to rotate, it has many, many, many more blunt arrows in it.
Harrow Tatterhood |
"See if can open door!" Harrow shouts to those in the room, pointing toward the southern door.
"Or maybe jump in pit and see if can shut off!" there is a pit around the center pillar...is it safe to jump into?
Lumnessa Raziel |
EEEEEPPPP! Lumnessa runs and dives behind Girion with her hands over her head.
Prone and conver for +8 to AC :)
GM Engleaktig |
Peeking down, Harrow can see that the pit doesn't seem to be a safe place. The party can hear arrows clatter around down there. Lumnessa dives for cover. Tan'ia fires a bolt at the mechanical trap. The stone column doesn't seem to mind.
Somehow, thanks to that other ancient school of magic, Rules as Written (also known as "technicalities"), the arrows don't seem to make it past the entrance to the room.
Arak, Girion, and Berosius have actions to take. This is round 1.
Girion, Son of Aroden |
Girion holds his shield up to cover Lumnessa, trying to confer its AC bonus to her instead of himself. "Stay down!" He studies the pillar intently, hoping to discover some way to turn it off. Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Hah! It's been so long since I ran this! From the description I thought the arrows had been fired *into* the pillar, not that they were pointing out from it. Meta-gaming is easier to avoid when you have a bad memory!
Harrow Tatterhood |
"No! Not stand around and get shot!" Harrow yells. "Try door! Fine! Harrow try door!" he says as rushes toward the door to the south of the pillar, head down.
looks like I can just make it to the door and attempt to open it.
Arak Taral |
Arak tries to move to the pillar to find a way to turn it off or disable it.
Move action: move 20'
Standard action: total defense (unless there is some other standard equilivant action I can take where I moved to disable the device
GM Engleaktig |
Arak may attempt to disable right now, if he so wishes.
Harrow discovers that the door to the south is locked!
@Girion: LOL! :-) The last time I ran this, I crit multiple PCs with the blunt arrows. Only the gnome with 8 STR was left standing--with practically no way to drag the rest of the party out of the room.
After Arak makes his check AND Berosius declares his action, the pillar (assuming it's not disabled) will fire again.
Arak Taral |
I wasn't sure if this would require a Disable Device check or if there was a different way to disable the device. I don't have the skill, so unless there is something obvious to turn it off there isn't much I can do except duck and cover!
"Maybe if we wait in the hallway it'll run out of arrows?" Arak yells to his companions.
GM Engleaktig |
Harrow is outside of the room. He won't be struck.
Lumnessa Raziel |
we're lucky, When I played it the whole party was in the room and the GM had the door shut so we couldn't get out of the room. (we didn't think to check the other door.
Harrow Tatterhood |
No, I'm in the room...Harrow had moved to check the southern door and found it was locked...
Harrow Tatterhood |
I had moved previously, but it was moved back. No one was checking the door...someone had to!
GM Engleaktig |
OK. I've moved Berosius one 5-foot-step forward. PCs aren't very injured, yet. From this vantage point, he can channel and get everyone without risking damage, since he's outside the room (and keeping the one-way-door open).
The pillar clicks and whirs. More arrows slide into place and fire:
Arak: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17, Nonlethal: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Harrow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23, Nonlethal: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Girion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18, Nonlethal: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Lumnessa: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24, Nonlethal: 1d8 ⇒ 3
Tan'ia: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27, Nonlethal: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Guys, please decrement your HP as appropriate. ALL damage you've received from the pillar is nonlethal! :-) Thankfully, there have been no crits... So far...
This was round 2.
__________
This is now round 3: Y'all are up again! The pillar clicks and whirs. More arrows slide into place to be fired...
Lumnessa Raziel |
WOW! That was close! Did you see that it bounced off of Girion' shield and almost hit me! Lumnessa calls from the ground.
Delay and see what everyone else does
Harrow Tatterhood |
str check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
str check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Harrow, struck by an arrow in the middle of his back, does not cry out and hardly seems to have felt it.
He puts his shoulder into the door to the south twice.
"Open, stupid door!"
Lumnessa Raziel |
Yeah! Good Job Harrow! Lumnessa climbs to her feet and scurries into the hallway.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow crashes through the door and into the Hallway.
"Everybody run this way!" he says as he covers his head with his hands.
He'll get out of the room ASAP.
Lumnessa Raziel |
Oh my! Girion! Girion are you OK!?! DON"T DIE AGAIN GIRION! the gnome moves to doorway, Tan'ia! Berosius! Come quick! Girion needs help!
GM Engleaktig |
Uh oh. Somebody get Girion, quick!
Now that Harrow has opened the door, the entirety of this level of the crypt has been explored. (CURRENT LEVEL MAP) We're halfway done. As soon as you deal with the current challenges, all you have to do is deal with the next level downstairs! :-)
Harrow Tatterhood |
Yay! Let's keep it up!
"Everybody okay?" Harrow asks.
Once everyone is present and accounted for (and healed), Harrow begins a search of the last room on this level.
take 20 perception: 20 + 3 = 23
"Things only go down from here," he says, apparently unaware of the double-entendre.
Arak Taral |
Arak rushes from the hallway through the arrow room, picking up Girion as best he can and trying to shield he man with his own body while getting them into the south hallway.
If I have to take more arrows this round to do that, that's fine.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow asks someone to heal him with his wand before they continue on.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Girion, Son of Aroden |
I didn't drop until I completed my move action, which should have taken me all the way across the room and out... the arrow staggered me, but did not drop me. Actually, I guess since it was just a move action, I didn't drop at all, did I? If so...
Girion casts his final cure light wounds on himself, preventing him from collapsing. He then helps everyone else heal as needed. (Go ahead and roll your wand charges as needed.)
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
wand of CLW on me: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
wand of CLW on me: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
wand of CLW on me: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Lumnessa Raziel |
Ooo! Oooo! Can I have some healing too please! I got hit on my arm and it is kind of soar. the gnome says while nursing her left arm and making a sad "puppy dog" face.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Once the group is fully healed, Harrow examines the room they are in completely.
take 20 on room 12.
After completing his search, he says "Only way is down," he says as he points down the stairs. "We hurry now," he adds as he begins to lead the way.
GM Engleaktig |
I took the liberty of presuming you healed up in the hallway. Because: 1) I didn't want combat to start while you were all so hurt, and 2) the enemy has better initiative modifiers than anyone in the party... NEW MAP
As soon as Harrow enters the room:
undead(Yellow): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
undead(Green): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
undead(Blue): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Arak: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Berosius: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Girion: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Harrow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Lumnessa: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Tan'ia: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
undead(Yellow): 23
undead(Green): 22
Berosius: 21
Arak: 20
undead(Blue): 18
Tan'ia: 15
Harrow: 12
Lumnessa: 7
Girion: 6
These skeletons seem "juicy". It's clear that they're not normal skeletons. Red, Yellow, and Green come out from their hiding places behind the pillars and attack with their claws!
Red attacks Harrow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22, Red Confirm: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11, Claw: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Yellow attacks Arak: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5, Miss!
Green attacks Girion: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15, Miss!
The Red skeleton's claws rip into Harrow's flesh, dealing 4 HP of damage. Berosius and Arak are up! This is round 1.
Berosius |
Busy weekend for you folks!
Holding aloft his wooden Rose of Milani, Berosius intones "Back! Feel the power of the Celestial Sphere and fall back!"
Channel Energy to harm undead (Will save half; DC 14): 1d6 ⇒ 5
GM Engleaktig |
Will Save(Red): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Will Save(Yellow): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Will Save(Green): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Will Save(Blue): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Bwahahaha! :-) These are were "bloody skeletons." They have fast healing and can only be permanently destroyed 1) by positive energy, 2) in the area of a bless or hallow spell, or 3) if its remains are sprinkled with a vial of holy water.
Nicely done, Berosius!
One of the skeletons is wearing a tarnished silver necklace worth 200 gp. A DC 15 Appraise check reveals that the necklace is of a style that is about 200 years old.
At the bottom of the stairs is a circular chamber with three passageways leading from it. In the center is a small stone pedestal. The sound of dripping water can be heard coming from the eastern passageway, while the stench of rot emanates from the west.
Lumnessa Raziel |
Awe! I wanded to use my new "Pew Pew" wand!
Harrow Tatterhood |
"Good job, little half-ling oracle. When Harrow was oracle, didn't have chance to use that power. But it is good one."
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Harrow asks the cleric to use his wand to heal him, then he prepares to move forward.
