For the Glory of the Veskarium! Docking Bay 3-3

Your boots squash with fetid water as you plod through the Puddles. A thick fog hangs in the air, seeming almost to caress the flesh with an unnatural chill. As you stand outside the Soggy Piper in a foot and a half of brackish brine, you try to recall what was so damned important to demand your presence in the half-flooded slum during Absalom’s rainy season. You remember your meeting at the Lodge just a few hours earlier with your Venture-Captain, Ambrus Valsin.

A bear of a man with the sides of his head freshly shaven, he motioned you into the meeting hall with a casual wave of his grizzled hand. The human captain outweighs most of Absalom’s half-orcs, and though a layer of beefy blubber coats his frame, those of you who have tangled with him in the Lodge sparring ring know that beneath this thin veneer of fat lies nothing but solid, steely sinew. Ambrus’ shakes his massive head as he examines a scrap of ancient parchment on the table before raising his eyes to greet your gaze and speaking:

"Come in then, friends, and thank you for answering my summons so swiftly. The Society is in need. An old and quite penniless historian, a bespectacled wag-beard by the name of Yargos Gill has recently made a discovery in an old archive that we have a great interest in obtaining: an ancient codebook, left behind in the wake of one of Taldor’s many failed attempts at invasion. This several-hundred-year-old text would prove an excellent addition to our collection, and must be preserved.

"Yargos makes his home in The Puddles, Absalom’s poorest district, suffering from a well-known reputation as a haven for lowlifes. Following an earthquake ten years ago, parts of the Puddles now rest below sea level, resulting in frequent and untimely flooding. Those who can afford not to live there—don’t.

"The district is the stomping ground of pimps, harlots, addicts, knifers, and hoards of unseemly derelicts. It’s never been a kind place, but recent reports reveal some new nameless terror on her waterlogged streets. Several persons claim to have seen cloaked, skeletal-like figures marching through an unnatural fog. Ill tidings indeed. Tracking down Yargos is now a priority—--lest some yellow-toothed thug cut him down, or one of these strange wraiths carry him beyond the pale. Find him, fellow Pathfinders, and find the codebook. Your exploits will be recorded in the Chronicles if you succeed."

The memory fades as a fresh deluge of cold seawater rounds a bend in the lane and assaults your knees. After searching for Yargos at his favorite eatery, the Soggy Piper, you learned you just missed him. According to the Piper’s staff, a gang of dangerous young tattooed toughs arrived ahead of you. They grabbed Yargos and several of his friends from their dinner table and dragged them to a nearby cliff at the edge of the Puddle District. The watch was called, but they will arrive too late, as they often do in the Puddles, when they bother to venture there at all.

It is early evening, the first Wealday of the month of Desnus, an old man is about to face some awful fate at the sea cliff known as Torsen’s Maw, and you are no closer to finding the codebook Ambrus sent you for.

Any retroactive questions etc you want to ask, also please take a moment to introduce your characters. More to come later today!

A white silk dressed woman geared with a scimitar and a Serenrae symbol comes to Ambrus call. Her name Kyra, she asks after the briefing... "How does the codebook look like? If Yargos dissappeared, how did you get notice of the codebook discovery? Can you tell us more about Yargos? Does he have any enemy? Is there anyone who wants him or the codebook disappeared?" and she finally adds "Is there any possibility we can find the codebook in his home?"

-----------------------------------------

Just after the Piper's staff reveals the event that took Yagros, Kyra gives her opinion on the matter "Perhaps the codebook is at Yagros office, but we better try to rescue him, if just in case he has it somewhere else. Although I think he deserves to be defended."

If the team decides to check Torsen's Maw, Kyra asks questions to get extra insight about the tattoed toughs and where did they took Yagros.

Asarnil waits patiently for the venture captain to finish relating the nature of their task. While mildly bored but the details the elf inwardly cringes as the human mentions "the puddles" as the destination of their search, a place Asarnil would have loved to stay far away from, considering the unsanitary reputation it holds among the denziens of Absalom (not that the rest of the so called "city at the center of the world" could boast much higher standard, at least in Asarnil's esteemed opinion...). As Valsin finishes relating his orders the elf asks:"About this Yargos Gill... do we know about any family, friends, acquaintances? Anyone who could help us get an hold on the old gezeer, so to speak? Any known enemies or people who may wish him ill? I'd like to know the lay of the land before jumping into the puddles... I hate to stain my wardrobe for nothing"

------------------------------------------

After the group reaches the puddles, Asarnil seems less than impressed with the place and pouts for most of the journey to the Soggy Piper, and when the staff explains about Yargos' fate the elf's anger bursts out:"Oh... for the love of all that's good! How can this old fool manage to get himslef abducted just before we come searching for him? And... my good woman..." he adds turning towards Kyra and assuming a patronizing tone:"Of course we'll need to save him. We'd risk to fail at our assigned task otherwise. But, about him deserving to be saved I beg to differ... if he were half competent he would not have gotten himself captured by a bunch of self deluded fanatics wearing dirty robes and chanting raucous prayers to some puny outsider! Yargos is a historian. He is particularly interested in the history of military conflicts, and has spent many years researching and learning from campaigns both failed and successful. He recently had helped provide some historical perspective on some of our Worldwound campaigns.” Venture-Captain Valsin says.

I am not aware of any of his personal dealings, frankly. Friends, enemies…” Venture-Captain Valsin shakes his head. “Sadly I do have much additional intelligence to provide on these matters. He was well compensated by the Ten for his assistance, but his link to the Puddles is unknown to me. The codebook itself by my understanding is a small, thin book, perhaps 5 or 6 inches in length and half that in width. The binding is worn, black leather. Well preserved for it’s age apparently.

Barret knows several important locations in the Puddles and some of the history of the area. It is an section of town you avoid if you can help it, or like to be wet. Those who stay in the Puddles have no other recourse or are up to no good. There are several well established gangs and thieves’ guilds in the Puddles.

Kyra, using Diplomacy to gather information typically takes 1-4 hours which at the moment seems like a long time to wait given the circumstances described. Though others are putting Knowledge skills to use.

Torsen’s Maw is ostensibly a cliffside park that overlooks the ocean. Prior to the earthquake the area was a home for the Torsen family. When the ground shifted and split open, the house was destroyed as much of the land slid into the ocean.

A young, strung out looking half-elf server at the Soggy Piper tells you that the toughs that came in and grabs the people eating had the strangest looking tattoos they had ever see. They were animated, and depicted a pack of dogs fighting with each other. Barret recognizes them as members of the War Hounder gang.

I will move the scene along later tonight.

They were not religious fanatics, but rather a gang known as "The War Hounders," so a pack of ruffians seems to be more what we're dealing with. Asarnil has Toughness, that's why he has 10 hps, also, no worries about the check, I knew the thug was ready to shoot, but Asarnil is exactly the type of character who would attack anyway. One thing though, Asarnil used force missile, not magic missile. It's his lvl 1 spell like ability as an evoker, so I don't think he needs a concentration check, also it's not really a spell as it has no somatic, verbal or material components, basically Asarnil pointed his finger at the bandit and energy erupted from it

For the Glory of the Veskarium! Docking Bay 3-3

Oh, somehow I didn't see that in the second column before when I checked. That's good then. I did all the research before I posted, because honestly I wasn't sure either. It is a spell-like ability and as such treated like a spell.

From the combat section: Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): Using a spell-like ability works like casting a spell in that it requires concentration and provokes attacks of opportunity. Spell-like abilities can be disrupted. If your concentration is broken, the attempt to use the ability fails, but the attempt counts as if you had used the ability. The casting time of a spell-like ability is 1 standard action, unless the ability description notes otherwise.

Once sure the captives have been saved, instead of joining the others Asarnil, still bleeding profusely marches towards the unconscious thug that wounded him and starts kicking him in the ribs:"SERVES-YOU-RIGHT-FOR-WHAT-YOU-DID! YOU-RUINED-MY-FAVORITE-ROBE-YOU-UNWASHED-BRAINDEAD-STAIN-ON-CREATION!!!"

Asarnil doesn't hit the thug too hard, it's just his way to make a point

Seeing Asarnil is badly injured, Kyra channels positive energy to heal him, the party and the poor people.

Before doing so she places the thugs in a way they are not touched by the power of his goddess, but she leaves the less injured one on the area. She asks for help to bind the guy with the manacles of the just rescued so that thug can be later interrogated by the team.

One of the men steps forward to Barret, adjusts his glasses and says, "I am Yargos. Yargos Gill! Very pleased to meet you. To meet you all! Thank you ever so much for your impeccably timely rescue! I was quite certain that these rapscallions were going to be the end of me. Of us all!"

He takes a moment to survey you all, "You are the Aspis..." Seeing the scowl starting to form on Barret's forehead he quickly changes track, "Pathfinders! Of course, you must be the Pathfinders. So happy to meet you. You know, I've been to Skyreach many times over the years. Some wonderful archives there when I've been allowed. Did you know that the spectacular failure of Taldor's 4th Expeditionary Army can be traced back to a game of dice between two noble lords? That's a little mystery I was able to put to rest thanks to the wonderful archives in Skyreach!" He nods with self-satisfaction.

"But that's not why you are here is it? You are here for the Black Echelon codebook no doubt! Well, I am very sad to say it is no longer in my possession. Thanks to the employer of this...riff-raff." He gestures with distaste at the War Hounders.

"You see, I came across the codebook a few weeks ago. Friend of a friend of a friend. You know. He found skeletal remains in the ground of his estate, along with a rusted sickle. Quite old, quite old indeed. Wanted me to take a look. What I discovered was absolutely amazing. Outstanding! And I don't mind telling you, frightening." he says.

"There was a book with the remains as well. A codebook! From a failed Taldor invasion of Absalom! I knew a little about this 'Silent Tide' invasion, of course. But this, well, this was something new! There were Taldor agents in the city, known as the Black Echelon. They were to carry out a series of attacks on infrastructure inside the city before they signaled a waiting Taldan armada of ships to attack the city. The signals for the sabotage and the invasion were detailed in the codebook." he says.

"On a lark we used a lantern to give some of the signals. And then, against the will of Pharasma Herself! That skeleton got up, picked up its rusted sickle and started to walk off! Thankfully, Lord Sv...the personal guard were able to return the abomination to rest before it got out on the streets! I knew right then that this codebook was dangerous. I went to the Watch, but they didn't want to hear me. So I took it home, planning to safeguard it myself. I tried to find out more information, and started my research into the specifics. After a may days with my nose in ancient books, I was able to piece together more of this 'Silent Tide.' Then some thugs, friends of these louts no doubt, started harassing me. Trying to find out about the codebook, asking me questions, threatening me. Finally they broke into my house and took it! Then, today they these goons come into the Soggy Piper, grab us all, and say they are gonna throw us off the cliff, 'Nessian's orders' they said."

Kyra - let's hold the thug interrogation till after we are done with Yargos? Just to try and keep things clearer :)

Yargos... you don't need a cleric to tell you're hiding something Barret will sheepishly glace at Kyra apologetically, if we are to help you and recover that code book, we need you to be completely honest and open with us. he will gently place his had on Yargos' shoulder as he says this, attempting to appear open as he tries to open the poorly closed clam that is Yargos Gill

Yargos seems surprised by the insinuation, "I assure you, my half-orc savior that I have been open and honest with you! My friends tell me I can be a bit long winded, I was only trying to be mindful of your attention spans." The other men nod in agreement at his 'long winded' statement. "What more can I tell you? Let me tell you a tale..."

"Eight hundred years ago, a hidden armada of ships from Taldor floated off the coast of the Isle of Kortos like a thousand locusts, waiting for the signal to invade Absalom. The plan was simple, but deadly: When the misty weather of Desnus took hold, a fifth column of infiltrators known as Black Echelon would weaken strategic defense points and destroy Absalom’s warning system from within. Once their bloody mayhem was complete, the hidden saboteurs planned to signal the fleet, welcoming them to lay siege to a city now brought to its knees.

"Prearranged signal lights were prepared for each phase of the offensive. But when the mists of Desnus descended, the prearranged signal lights never appeared. Unbeknownst to the hidden strike teams, the leaders of the Black Echelon infiltration cell were discovered and assassinated by brave heroes of Absalom. The signal lanterns lay dark, and the rest of Black Echelon sat idle. Several hours later, the fleet’s hiding place was discovered. A quick counterattack by Absalom’s navy ambushed the would-be invasion force and Taldor’s armada was destroyed to the last mast. In the coming weeks, Absalom’s constabulary rooted out the remaining hidden members of Black Echelon and put every last one to the sword.

"The failed invasion mission, called the Silent Tide, would have amounted to little more than a cautionary footnote in a textbook of naval battles save for one crucial detail: Prior to entering Absalom, each member of the Black Echelon cell swore an ancient oath, known as the Binding Word. Black Echelon pledged to fulfill their duties, no matter the barrier, no matter the cost. And as recent events have begun to demonstrate, in this case, the power of the Binding Word compels these deadly saboteurs from beyond the pale."

Barret will nod at his story, committing it to memory to recount the tale on some other day (with MUCH more flair than the good Yargos), but will also raise an eyebrow and simply tell him You said Aspis before. he will then turn to look at his companions as if to say "Anyone else want to take this?"

For the Glory of the Veskarium! Docking Bay 3-3

Yargos blushes a little, "Ah well, yes. Sorry about that. It's just that in my furvor to get someone to listen to me about the codebook I reached out to many different contacts though out Absalom. Lucky for me you Pathfinders got here when you did!"

Asarnil gives the thug a couple more hits before limping towards the others, apparently satisfied, mutters to Kyra:"Thanks for the healing, Kyra" before reaching the chained men and the rest of his companions in time to hear about Yargos' explanation. As he's finished the elf sighs:"All good information mr Yargos, yet it lacks a crucial detail: who's this Nessian? And more importantly, where does he hide? And besides that... why did you mistake us for Aspis' men?!?! as he finishes Asarnil lets a little anger creep into his voice.

Sorry for the mistake post about Aspis' consortium. That's what happen when you start a post, do other things, finish your post later and don't check if other people posted. Please consider as if Asarnil said nothing on the matter

Wyatt shrugs.

"Well, I can't speak for you, but I don't have either a Wayfinder, or an Aspis badge... so I can see how someone might not be sure as to exactly whom we represented..."
