Creat the Cheat |
"What's behind the north door?"
Ray prods one of the bigger folk to give it a try.
"You. If you are to be believed." Creat opens the door and looks inside again just make sure there isn't a spare set of Ray, Laeowynne, and Tyranius in there.
Ray Hogan |
Ray gives Creat a wink. "It must be horrible to be you and not sure if I am me. Well, it really just must be horrible to be you. Maybe that's why no one wanted to copy you. Hey! I am only joking!"
Valeros The Free |
"Y'know, Creat, maybe you should have a drink and lighten up a bit. You're jumping at so many shadows that you're losing your focus. Like that door there. Could ya check it to make sure it isn't rigged or anything to mess us up?"
Valeros will offer a drink to Creat, but if the roguish sort refuses, the fighter will shrug and drink himself.
GM Andrew |
Creat checks the doors and doesn't see any traps. You open the doors...
Double doors open onto a long, oval-shaped room. Floating balls of fire illuminate walls covered with a bewildering array of runes, sigils, and glyphs. Beneath these carvings, stacks of engraved stone tablets rest in recessed niches in the walls. Looks like some sort of library or archives.
Let me know what you'd like to do.
Creat the Cheat |
"Whoah. Pretty cool huh?" Creat steps inside and spins around with a flourish. "This is more like it! None of those arbitrary doorways that disintegrate you when you step through, no anagram traps, no giant crayfish terrariums, just awesome coolness... and lame doppelgangers. Whad'll it be next? Lava children? Still this place seems cool."
Perception (have a look around, +1 vs traps): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Tyranius Stormbringer |
Tyranius pushes into the room with a grunt. He scans for some form of magic and inspects the runes to see if he might be able to tell what they say. Lemme get a better look.

Detect magic
Knowledge Planes; Religion; Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
GM Andrew |
Creat and Tyranius start searching and checking around here. No traps are found.
Inspecting most of the tablets, you find they are in an ancient language (Thassilonion).
There's lots of magic in here. Of the many tablets of the alcoves, only 3 glow magical. You also detect two runes that are magical. One is above the entranceway and had a red glow, and one is in the Northwest corner of the room and doesn't really have much of a glow at all.
In fact, the one in the Northwest corner looks like it was meant to be hidden, and upon closer inspection it actually looked like the piece of the wall with the rune on it can be pulled out.
Laeowynne Faelandalan |
"Finally something worthy of my time" Laeowynne says as they enter the library. Purusing the tomes he says "Hmmm not one of the languages I learned. I will need to change that in the future."
He then moves to inspect the magic items.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30
GM Andrew |
I've moved people who said they were searching into the room.
As searching around the room is happening, the red glowing rune above the entrance begins to glow more brightly, and it detaches itself from the wall. It begins to glow with fiery energy.
(It is currently 5 ft. above the ground, and is tiny size.)

As searching around the room is happening, the red glowing rune above the entrance begins to glow more brightly, and it detaches itself from the wall. It begins to glow with fiery energy.
Creat's eyes grow wide. "Oh that can't be good. Maybe it's time to check out of this library."
Laeowynne Faelandalan |
Laeowynne looks at the writing and then looks around the room to see if there are some other clues to assist in deciphering it. Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
When the globe starts to glow the elf looks at it for a brief second while keeping his staff out for defense...
Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
He yells to the others "I believe this is a Rune Guardian, carved in the likeness of a deadly sin of ancient Thassilon. The only defenses these have are having some resistance to spells, being a construct and repairing itself. This particular one seems to be associated with the sin of Wrath, which I believe is linked to the evocation school of magic. As such, it can use Burning Hands many times so be careful and spread out. As a rune of wrath, it is vulnerable to the opposition schools of the sin of wrath. If I am not mistaken those two schools are abjuration and conjuration. The rune guardian's spell resistance does not apply against those schools."
Laeowynne then casts an acid dart at the rune...Acid Dart from Conjuration School vs touch AC: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14...DMG: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Laeowynne singes the rune with an acid dart, fully affecting it with the conjuration school power.

Red's Turn
The rune's broken construction starts to slowly mend itself. It flies up to a height of 10 feet and blasts down a spray of Burning Hands upon Creat and Laeowynne.

Taking the other piece of rune out of the wall, it glows as magical....
There's also three tablets that glow as magical.

Tyranius looks over the objects. All of this older magic seems completely foreign to him.

Laeowynne is still a little shaken up following the rune's attack and cant think clearly just yet.
He takes a cursory look at the glowing tablets and

"Now these could be handy. Spells on the tablets!" Feel free to pop open the last 3 spellcheck spoilers.
GM Andrew |
So, before that interruption, you're still in the library with a bunch of tablets in Thassilonian. What would you like to do?
Reference Post - You've already found the magical stuff now.
Creat the Cheat |
Creat makes a stand for himself of ancient non-magic tablets in the northwest corner and in classic AD&D DMG style uses his knife to pry the rune from its spot on the wall.
"You mean this thing? Maybe you have to be turned to stone first?"
Tyranius Stormbringer |
Never seen that symbol before. Looks ancient. Tyranius says as he prepares himself for the door opening as Creat takes his time scouring every inch of the door.
