[PFS] CORE GM Zoomba's Captive in Crystal (Inactive)

Game Master Zoomba

Map and handouts

Recent events have left the Master of Spells Aram Zey unable to fulfill his duties, and without his expertise, the Pathfinder Society struggles to resolve pressing arcane matters. The Decemvirate has reopened the decade-old case of the most qualified replacement: Aram Zey's predecessor and former Master of Spells Sorrina Westyr, who disappeared while handling a powerful wayfinder that the Society has since kept closely guarded. It is up to the PCs to track down Sorrina Westyr — and bring back whatever remains.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Looking around the body, its surroundings seem to have been well cleared. However Simon can [i]detect through the quartz that the sword borne by the small figure is magical (+1 greatsword). The wayfinder itself also is magic, and opening it causes a handwritten note to fall out, bearing the words:

“Hail our noble comrade, Braethin. May your blade taste battle once more in this life or another.”

After explaining to the party of the magical items, Simon gets down on one knee and reads the note aloud. Then, he says, "It may not be a proper burial, but at least there's a small eulogy. I have no objection if someone wants to carry him. I lack the strength to do so."

He gets up and looks at Forlorn and completely changes tone. "Yeah, Forlorn. He's got some good stuff! I can't use the greatsword. Shame. So rare to get equipment in our size."

If you ever fail to identify items in the future I have a wand of Identify that I can fire off.

"I will carry him. He was a warrior. He deserves to be taken back to his family for a warrior's farewell."

After gingerly removing the cairn stones and exposing the halfling's bones Jötunn kneels down and says a quiet prayer.

"I will guard the honor of my fellows, both in thought and deed, and I will have faith in them."

I have like 76 pounds before I'm heavily encumbered. How much weight for Halfling bones, GM?

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

I’m going to say the halfling’s remains will weigh 15 lbs (about half a human skeleton)

Also, is Iritazi or Simon ‘wearing’ the ioun stone, is one of you keeping the wayfinder with it inserted by your side, or are you keeping both objects back in the box?

Jotunn thinks he may hear the faint beat of drums from off in the distance as he finishes his prayer, but if it even existed the sound fades just as abruptly as it arrived. Collecting what’s left of Braething and his belongings, the six of you continue onwards back down the trail.

Over the course of another hour, the path you follow twists and turns through the mineral jungle. The unulating landscape begin to shift as you leads take you up a series of slopes. Climbing, you hug a narrow outcropping of one of the larger hills – close to a small mountain – as the terrain starts to become uneven. To your left, the hilly outcropping’s steep slope is covered with jagged green crystals. Looking over the drop to your right, below you can see a saline river winding sixty feet below through a field of small prisms.

Turning a corner, a boulder at the ledge’s edge stands in front of you. Facedown before is a human-sized body, which seems to be covered in fine, glassy filaments.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

The creature up the slopes hill appears to be an especially large Crysmal. Outsiders from the Plane of Earth (though occasionally slipping into deep pockets within the Material Plane), these outsiders exist only to find, consume, and absorb crystals and gemstones, which it then fashions and animates into the next generation of its brood. Immune to fire and cold and resistant to electricity and no-bkudgeoning assaults, crystals can also fire shards of themselves as a ranged attack - though it then takes some time to regrow such a spike.

The large beast continues to stare back at you.

Can you explain the terrain a bit? Is it up a steep cliff?

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

The hill upwards is climbable but steep. It would require a DC 15 climb check to ascend. Even with than, the many crystals that cover the slope are jagged and would likely give some cuts and bruises as you moved upwards, though an exceptional climber might be able to avoid them.

Forlorn begins wailing away, a strange dissonance emerging betwene the crude melody and lyrics of the song itself and how well the bard is performing it.

The halfling's other action sends out a loud ringing note that seems to resonate strongly within the crysmal. Cracks splay across the outsider's surface.

Jotunn readies for the creature's attack, while Numair blasts it from afar.

Iriazati and his companion hurry up the slope, easily dodging the crystal spars jutting from it. However, as they near the crest, they notice that the large creature is not alone: three smaller (ie 'normal-sized' crysmals) are moving about at the hill's peak, hidden from below by the rocks.

Irizati, I had to adjust Nagani as he had gone on top of the blue crysmal. The rock you are on is a slightly higher boulder - you can take your second action (Standard or Move) based on this new revelation.

And Simon I think when putting the textbox together in the slide I accidentally shifted your modifiers over by one (so the Perception became your initiative and the Sense Motive your Perception). Apologies - it's been adjusted for the future.

The gnome walks up to the teleported crysmal and lays a hand on it. The crystalline scorpion begins swaying strangely.

Up atop the hill, the large snake's bite clamps down in the small outsider before it. As the bite latches on, the snake pulls it closer, forming widening cracks until the crysmal shatters into dozens of pieces.

It's large companion scurries back and rears on its legs. A spray of hundreds of tiny, razor-sharp crystals shoot from it to lacerate the druid and his bonded friend.

Irizati and Nagani take slashing damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 1) = 12 a DC 17 Reflex save will halve this.

Based on comments by the crysmal Irizati will have Nagani Stay while he looks around.

Another +8 if scent is involved.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Forlorn tires to trip the crysmal again. He flicks his whip much better than the last attempt, but only manages to get it around a few of the legs.

However, with one more big swing, Jötunn shatters the scorpion before him.

Up on the ledge, Irizati takes a look around. Strange crystal dust and patted ground marking the flat area bring to mind a nest of sorts, but the druid also notices a few large gems in their full luster: four emeralds, a sparkling diamond, and an opal that shines with an unnatural glow. Except for the crysmal mired on the slope however, he does not detect other natives.

Satisfied that his allies have the situation well in hand, and knowing that his arcane resources are limited, Numair delays.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

As Numair holds off on pressing the advantage, the trapped crysmal finally manages to free itself, but looks around and clicks.

Terran:
The nest is lost. Slayer coming. Must escape. I must escape.

Silver Crusade

I will learn the weight of my sword. Without my heart to guide it, it is worthless.

"It is alone, and outnumbered. Let us show it the door out."

Jötunn steps forward, putting himself between his fellows and the creature. He then spins his flail around in a large arc and brings it down on the shattered remains of the last crysmal, making sure the remaining creature sees the results.

I will begin gathering the shiny things.

If you are fine with it...

Surrounded, the Crysmal vanishes, only to reappear far down the trail in the distance.

COMBAT OVER!
Irizati -6 hp

The dinosaur Druid gathers up the half-dozen gemstones above in the neat. Grabbing the opal, it feels slightly warm in his claw.

A body still lies ahead of you on the winding path. The strange fibers covering it look like brittle tiny crystals, growing at a very slow rate.

Silver Crusade

[retired]

Jötunn eyes the glittering, shattered remains of the creature before him with a greedy look. He kneels down to collect several of the larger pieces.

"What a strange encounter. Tribes normally raid for these sorts of spoils. But down here, the very creatures are made of them."

After stuffing many pockets of his backpack with gems (let's say... 25lbs?) Jötunn heads towards the crystal encrusted humanoid body.

"By the Inheritor... What happened here?"

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Looking down at the body, Irizati sees that the corpse seems to be a half-orc and is somewhat mummified. The fibers covering the body seem to be lightly cocooning it from the elements (such as there are) and slowly petrifying it. Strewn on and about the body is a tattered explorer's outfit, some parchment and bent or broken inkpens, and a leather journal emblazoned on the cover with the arcane symbol you've seen on the 'front' of each tagged marker.

Jötunn begins to line his backpack with the fallen pieces of your foe. Only a span of moments pass however, before a twelve-foot tall figure erupts from the earth on the other side of the hill. Brandishing a scimitar, he yells out.

Terran:
"Back again you infestations! Well your presence here shall not continue much longer. You should have...oh?"

The figure's cries stop as he sees to six of you. Looking as if he was carved form purple stone, the figure stands tall and proudly in black and gold armor. You notice dark gemstone embedded in his muscled arms as he sheathes his blade and gives a shallow bow towards you, speaking in Terran...and then noticing blank stares from most of the party, Common.

Greetings travelers. It is rare to see new souls emerge down here in the Womb, at least mortals such as yourselves. I am Reyshal ik Jalman. How do you find yourselves this day?
