Game Master Zoomba

Map and handouts

Recent events have left the Master of Spells Aram Zey unable to fulfill his duties, and without his expertise, the Pathfinder Society struggles to resolve pressing arcane matters. The Decemvirate has reopened the decade-old case of the most qualified replacement: Aram Zey's predecessor and former Master of Spells Sorrina Westyr, who disappeared while handling a powerful wayfinder that the Society has since kept closely guarded. It is up to the PCs to track down Sorrina Westyr — and bring back whatever remains.

Irizati is a homely looking gentleman wearing dragonhide armor and an assortment of weapons. He is accompanied by a large heavily muscled constrictor snake.

"Don't mind Nagani. He may be as dumb as a post but he's well trained. Just don't leave any small pets near him and you'll be fine. I hear tell there is adventuring to be done."

A well dressed gnome in Taldan noble garb and adorned with jewelry enters the room. He has a thick blue beard and his blue hair is barely visible under his outrageous noble hat. He has several wands, scrolls, and spell pouches.

"Greetings! My name is Simon! It is a pleasure to once again go on another escapade for the Pathfinder Society. I do enjoy myself a good adventure; solving problems, meeting new people along the way, and even sometimes an occasional conflict, haha! I am a tailor who hails from Taldor. Haha! What delicious alliteration, no?"

"As for my adventuring talents: I am skilled in the art of enchantment. A mind is a fickle thing, is it not? Some individuals are sooo easily manipulated. But fear not! I would never dream of using my magic on another Pathfinder. I also have some talent in talking to others, and I am well educated." Simon smiles, showing pearly white teeth. His smile seems to emanate a sense of warmth and welcoming, almost as if magical in of itself.

The gnome drones on.

"I hail from Taldor, land of lush entertainment! Oh, how I wish I could sing and dance as well as some of the famous actors around there, but alas it is not my lot in life."

"Anyway, like I said, I like meeting new people and would be veeeery interested in some of your stories as well!"

Much to the others' surprise (hopefully, Forlorn thinks), a small goblin capers into the room. He wears a pirate's hat, an eye patch, bare feet, a ridiculous purple robe a size too large, and a fine mesh of armor under it - all souvenirs of his previous adventures. At his belt (why one would wear a belt over a robe, is anyone's guess) is a whip and several cylinders of hardened paper, and a haversack clings to his back.

"Hey hey! Forlorn here, Forlorn Zamoros, an' I'm ready for some action!" He briefly considers announcing his presence with some fireworks, but decides against it with a sigh. The last time he had, a Venture-Captain had gotten mad at him.

"I like ta sing, play the exploding-pipe, dance, light fires, light fireworks, work with other people, an' have fun most of all!"

Turning to Simon, he replies to the question asked just before he entered. "I just got back from some big temple, at Tar Kuata or somewhere. The people there weren't much fun, even when I did what they wanted. Break a board in half, huh? Didn't say I couldn't use fireworks, an' then they got all mad when I shattered it!" He pauses, lost in a moment of annoyed reminiscence. "But I helped 'em all the same, 'cause I like helping! Oh, an' there was this time in Geb, when we were disguised up as zombies, and one of us was some crazy wizard guy. I've never seen anyone use a crossbow like him..."

An imposing Kellid makes his presence known with a belch as he wields a half-eaten turkey leg in one hand and a stein of cider in the other. A heavy flail made of silver hangs at his waist, and a huge sword made of some dark metal is slung over his back. Furs jut out from underneath his platemail.

He pauses only slightly to furrow his brow in Irizati's direction.

Although he looks young, probably around the age of 20, his black hair is streaked with silver. Distinguishing silver scales accent his cheek bones and bony growths jut out along his chin line. He must have the blood of dragons in his ancestry.

He tears another bite off of his turkey leg before speaking.

"By the Inheritor! I hope this is a valiant quest. That lives will be spared. And that our words and actions bring light to the dark corners of Golarion..."

He washes the last of his turkey down with a gulp of cider. Clunking his stein down on the table, he leans back.

"...or that our next meal is paid for in gems. I won't complain either way."

He grins.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

While the cheese crackers and tea of the waiting room are refilled as you sit, eventually the last few adventurers arrive and an assistant leads the party through a series of hallways and to a large chamber currently occupied by an unlikely pair.

Zarta Dralneen and Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine sit atop folding camp stools set before a carefully arranged pile of...well, everything: packed tents, fur- lined parkas, parasols, loose robes, flippers, and other gear flanked by a team of mules on one side and horses on the other.

Shaine rises to greet his guests, ignoring the eclectic assortment of equipment behind him. “I appreciate your meeting with us here. We have lost many good Pathfinders in the wake of a recent attack by the Aspis Consortium, and we have struggled to fill the vacancies left by the fallen. In particular, I have focused on securing a Master of Spells.” He grimaces before adding, “Hopefully just an interim Master of Spells. The best candidate is one the Decemvirate assumed dead about ten years ago: Aram Zey’s predecessor, Sorrina Westyr.”

Zarta Dralneen shifts atop her stool for a moment before standing. “Yes, always an, interesting individual Sorrina. That’s not to say that the Decemvirate was callous in their decision to certify her death; investigators thought they had exhausted all available leads at the time. My archival team has since located several requisitions that Westyr wrote and approved for extremely rare ioun stones, all but one of which she returned to the Society’s vaults.” With a smugly satisfied smirk, she holds up a small lead box. “This is significant because she was researching the nature of ioun stones and their interactions with a special wayfinder referred to as the wayfinder of many paths. The wayfinder can open a gateway to any number of locations, but each type of ioun stone serves as the key to just one very precise — often inconvenient — point.”

Kreighton Shaine finishes feeding a handful of oats to a mule as he adds. "Needless to say, few thought this was worth testing further. further. However, Sorrina found the contraption intriguing and set to cataloguing as many of the destinations as possible. It may be that wherever this stone sent her proved lethal, yet it may also be that she is merely trapped, imprisoned, or otherwise waylaid. We want you to follow Master Westyr’s team and bring them back to Absalom if they’re alive — or whatever you can learn of their deaths if not.”

He takes the lead box from Zarta and places it atop an ornately carved wooden box. Sepia ellipsoids are extremely uncommon, and this is one of a small few remaining in the Society’s possession; do not lose it. The other box holds the wayfinder of many paths, which I trust you will also keep safe. Perform whatever other preparations you must, and stop back here once you’re ready.”

Kreighton Shaine offers a handful of oats out to the 'goblin', curiously amused. Zarta just rolls her eyes and turns from the halfling.

"Sorrina's team was an eclectic collection. Braethin was a halfling disciple of Gorum who was remarkably even- tempered. Nissira was one of Master Westyr’s closest friends when they were initiates, often accompanying the latter on missions as a tracker. Setik of Averaka served as their interpreter and authority in spiritual matters, always holding himself to a higher standard to offset any prejudices against half-orcs. Finally, there was Grave Treader, a Shoanti scholar whose powers of observation and prolific submissions to the Pathfinder Chronicles were unmatched.”

"When she left the woman - human -" Zarta clarifies seeing still confused expressions on your faces. "was approaching middle-age. Fine features, short-cropped hair. I'd imagine she would likely still have a wayfinder with her. Though," the Dark Archive head smriks at the box containign the wayfinder of many paths "not this one of course."

Over by Forlorn, Kreighton Shaine is stroking his chin as the halfling eats. "You're quite right. The only people who know exactly where the sepia ellipsoid will take you are Sorrina and her team. It could be another city, a distant country, or even another plane of existence. And since we dont' know, we thought it best to cast a wide net in our preparations." the elf nods to the assorted and mis-matched gear around them."[/b]

The assorted gear include cold-weather gear, hot-weather gear, climbing gear, lanterns, tents, a grandfather clock, and a significant number of other equipment. There are also three potions of cure moderate wounds, a potion of water breathing, a scroll of tongues, two +1 dragon bane crossbow bolts, and one vial of silversheen.

”Oh, a sepia ellipsoid stone is quite powerful.” Shaine explains excitedly. ”While in orbit around an individual, it can sustain them without air, heal minor injuries fairly rapidly, and even enhances spellcasting ability.” It combines the benefits of an iridescent spindle (sustains one without air), pearly white spindle (regenerate 1 hit point per 10 minutes), and an orange prism (+1 caster level).

”It is also Zarta interjects. ”unstable. Hence my archive taking care to handle it. The stone resists being contained to a wayfinder or anything else – hence the lead box. Moreover it drains away the power of other ioun stones over time. I’ve found that anti-curse magic tends to deactivate it, for a short while at least, those few times I have needed to handle it.”

You can grab hot-weather gear for this adventure, as its brought up in the scenario. Unfortunately however, the fun won’t last beyond it: not on the chronicle sheet to buy :(

Also no Knowledge checks yet, as you don’t know where you’re going. Don’t worry, your chance will come…

"This is not a toy, dear Grunyar. It is a rare and expensive resource that we would hope you would hold onto carefully. Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

With Shaine finished teaching the nuances of the device, Zarta grabs the wayfinder of many paths back from him and sets it down on a table before opening the box and removing a sepia-colored crystal stone. The Paracountess places the object into the wayfinder, holds it out with a flourish and says "ANUVRIS!"

A rip slashes through the air before you, slicing down through space and then widening to reveal a new scene as it widens into a ten-foot sphere. Ont he other side of the portal lies revealed a shadowy cavern illuminated only by the ambient light of Absalom’s afternoon sun, but even this faint light is enough to make the field of malachite stalactites sparkle. On the ground, clear quartz crystals splay into spiky bushes, low gypsum roses wrap around blue crystal archways, and great purple and green spires rise beyond view in a jungle of countless mineral marvels.

Zarta and Shaine exchange glances with one another before the elf turns to you with a shrug. "Well, I suppose you won’t be needing the horses.”

"Now go, take this and hurry before it closes. Grab what you can and move. Hopefully we'll see you again tomorrow. Or in a few days. Very likely it will be sooner than a decade."

The portal will stay open for only a minute or so. If you'd like to grab any particular mundane gear that may be hear let me know now, otherwise step through. I am presuming that Jotunn will grab the wayfinder for the moment; on the other side you can hand the stone amongst yourselves as you choose.

From what you can see, the portal is ataking you to some underground chamber with strange and prolific deposits of crystal within. A knowledge check (dungeoneering) could tell you more, but not in the time of angle before you'll be on the other side for a few minutes.

Nagani can bring a cart along

You head through the other side, with a quick cantrip from Simon illuminating your surroundings a bit better. Only moments after the last of your party crosses through, the portal behind ripples and vanishes, leaving you alone in the strange terrain.

The wayfinder of many paths seems to have deposited you on a relatively cleared patch of stone floor. All around you rest strange, and sometimes quite large, crystilline formations of all sorts of colors and compositions. Together, the vista seems to be a forest made of gems, with quartz undergrowth 'brush' and pearidot trees.

Simon is not quite sure of where you've been brought, but its certainly underground. And from the echoing coming from the noise of your movements, the cavernous place you're in is quite large indeed.

Anyone else have a Know Dungeoneering check?

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Forlorn looks around and realizes that many of the crystalline structures seem to have formed in previously unknown — possibly unnatural — ways; the processes necessary to form one type of crystal here are vastly different than those to create others in the same area. Unfortunately, this regional attribute does not match the description of any well-known cave system, at least among Pathfinders. Still, the halfling think he can understand enough of the strange formations to at least help in retracing your steps as you travel.

As you discuss where to go, on a nearby stalagmite of amethyst you notice a strange symbol seemingly etched into one side of the geode. It's partially obscured by some mineral growth, but looking closer the symbol appears to be that of an arcane mark. Circling the stalagmite, you notice a different arcane mark on the crystal's opposite side.

To try and follow Sorrina and her team's trail to begin your search, you'll need a Survival or Perception check. Those of you who can detect magic could instead use a Knowledge Arcana check to attempt to notice and follow the path of arcane marks

Did my Survival check to follow tracks not count? I'll roll another one just in case.

"Nice. They left us a trail to follow. Still, We may face dangers ahead. Shapeshifting time."

Form of: A Deinonychus! I can cast while shapeshifted.

I think Irizati has it, but Simon will still keep up a Detect Magic to make sure we stay on track.

"...Okay, okay, it was the Aspis! The Aspis attacked the Grand Lodge, jus' don't hurt me!" Forlorn finishes his conversation with himself aloud as he peers around for markings. "This cave's like nothin' I've ever seen, we could prob'ly turn a profit offa this..."

Jötunn chuckles again, but this time it's with the "Goblin", and not at him.

"Little creature, I like your spirit. You have the heart of a dragon to want so much, and be able to carry so little."

Jötunn examines a nearby crystal formation.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

"If this 'forest' is truly natural, perhaps a few logs for the fire would be permissable. But let us make haste searching for these Pathfinders. If we find them, that means more arms for carrying back gems."

He presses on.

"They came through such a long time ago... surely, their trail wouldn't still be fresh...?"

Numair happily follows along behind the dinosaur with the sensitive nose.

Not using scent. They left footprints and also arcane marks. Scent might let me find traces of other things living in the cave though.

*I* know you aren't using scent - Numair doesn't ;-)

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Sorry about that Irizati - I did miss your post right above mine for some reason.

With a velciraptor in the lead, the gnome detecting your surroundings, and the rest keeping watch as the snake drags a cart of supplies, you make your way through the strange crystal cavern following the faint trail of Sorinna's expedition.

Though you find yourselves able to note a series of markings and signs of passage that have yet to erode in the underground chamber, the trip is slow going. After weaving through the crystal jungle and up and down rocky ridges for two hours, Irizati notices a strange mound of stones not far from one of the marked gems. Loose chunks of quartz have been piled on top of a skeletal figure in some form of cairn. Through the somewhat translucent crystals, you can see that the bones belonged to a small humanoid, who even in death lies buried with a spiky chain shirt, a fine greatsword, and a wayfinder hanging from his neck.

"Looks like one of them didn't make it very far..."

Numair carefully inspects the area around the body for clues.

Perception - 'Take 20' = 33.

Forlorn absently watches the ceiling of the great cavern, conducting an invisible bagpipe dirge for the fallen Pathfinder. Whichever Venture-Captain had sent him to Ulfen lands for several months to get him away from the lodge was probably bemoaning the disadvantages of their idea.

"This one, I think, was...Braethin? Yeah, the little one. Well, life goes on. Anythin' good on him?"

Silver Crusade

"We should recover his remains, and belongings. This is no proper burial."
