If you guys want to run a sparring match, we'll just make it a simple combat. Roll a block of attacks and I'll roll Lander's and whomever scores more hits in 10 rounds wins. We don't want to waste healing, so we can assume these are perfunctory attacks that do no damage. Lander is wearing only studded leather, so given you both have quite an advantage armor-wise, let me know if you intend to doff your armor for the challenge to even the odds for Lander.

Lander's Rolls:

1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
3: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

No one did, it was just a reply to Milythandyr's suggestion that people might think he "made any heroic deeds up".

It's clear to anyone observing that Lyan has bested the young nobleman, landing easily double the blows that Lander has managed. Still, though his technique needs work, he shows a good deal of raw talent and potential. "That armor serves you well, sir... I'm sorry, I don't believe I caught your name before..." Once Lyan shares his name, Lander addresses him with an increased tone of respect. "I would indeed appreciate training from so skilled a swordsman." He says with a nod.

The night is spent peacefully as you eat and retire, keeping watches by shift through the night. Lander winces occasionally, a sure sign that he is still in pain from his wounds, but he does not complain or ask for healing.

The next morning, he is looking better, but still not completely recovered. The swelling in his eye has decreased and he can now see out of both, but the bruising has turned a mottled purple and yellow. He checks his appearance in a small looking glass he found in one of the tents and grimaces. He looks equally bothered by his tattered clothing, but again makes no complaint. "So where are we off to this morning? Shall we press on in search of more brigands? Or have you business of your own in these lands?"

Lander looks ready to continue on the way he was going, still further from Silverhall. But he does seem a good deal more agreeable if you have better suggestions.

And that is what we call a set back. Diplomacy checks or other methods will be needed to persuade him again now.

The young man still looks disgruntled, but Milythandyr's words sway him again. "All right, I will return to Silverhall with you. But I still don't see what benefit it is to be idling around my estate when the trouble is out here."

Ok, back on track! I'll stop playing cat and mouse with this dodgy NPC now and cut you guys a break.

Knowing this particular nobleman is a bit of a flight risk, you take appropriate measures to keep him companionably surrounded as you make your way back. Approximately halfway between the bandits’ camp and Silverhall, you all approach a bridge you crossed on your way to the camp. The road narrows here, leading over a well-worn stone bridge that crosses a stream. Trees dot the landscape to both sides of the bridge, and the rushing of water and the croaking of frogs give the scene an air of tranquility.

Until the peaceful quiet is broken by a nearly deafening, angry Squawk! You look up to see a pair of large, bristling flightless birds of some variety tearing at the ground and getting ready to charge you all.

Wow... that goose is cooked!

Fingalad's arrow finds it's mark, sinking into the bird's feathery torso. Lyan strikes with righteous might, delivering a devastating blow to it's head. The bird falls, unconscious and dying. The remaining bird screeches as her mate falls. Milythandyr directs her spell to the remaining axe beak and the smell of scorched feathers fills the air.

Lander sees his opportunity to prove himself has come at last and he charges, drawing his Aldori Dueling Sword along his way. He ducks beneath a clumsy bite from the bird as he passes through it's threat range and strikes a magnificent blow, wounding the beast.

The great bird gives up a mournful cry and begins a retreat back the way it came. As you watch, it looms near what looks to be a nest up near the ridge.

Then you can say that you played him by allowing him to feel he outsmarted you, when that was not the case. Jacques looks for a moment his companions for a moment before fixing his looks on Lander. "What the others said is an option from many other. For what you are telling me Lander, you are feeling betrayed by Marek. He trained you and even more. You had faith on him and exploit it for his own gain.

But in the same time, you think you are guilty from what Marek organize using what you said to him. You should have been able to notice it. But you haven't and now. All those problem your mother, youth home have because of Marek's organization, you are sure that it is your fault. Like an accomplice.

But, by taotais, you are not responsible for those attacks. You are a victim. Just a victim, like your mother is. Just in a different way. If you were not here, Marek would have just find an another person. It is just happening it was you. There really really no shame of being a victim. Really I insist.

I... don't think Marek feelings were all false. Those thing are never totally false. It is just that for him, his unknown cause was most important that your friendship. And that happen a lot of time in this world.

Now... you have the power to stop those attacks. You are a witness and an influential one. With the proof, we have. You can testify to your mother what crime Marek have done.

As for your fear of being judged by her like a criminal... Lander, she's your mother. She knows your good heart. You may have some punition... but you are the one who feel you need to be imprison.

Think of this as the final lesson Marek gives you. Being defeated doesn't mean the opponent used a sword against you. It can be with word. But as the tale. You can train in intrigue and beat the bandit lord.

But if you decide to silence yourself, you will be responsible of future event because you have the power to stop it."

Lander considers your words, looking very conflicted. He doesn't seem to like the idea of lying and he really doesn't like the idea of being a victim. But Jacques words seem to have the necessary effect and the proud young nobleman realizes that holding Marek responsible for his actions is more important than protecting his reputation.

"You're right. If we don't act now, the coward will run and cause us problems again. Perhaps my mother will forgive me for being taken in if I help take him down. But we must be ready, he is a very capable combatant."

Check discussion for a note on what happens next.

Lander considers the problem for a moment and then decides facing Marek head on would not be wise. "If he's been at this subterfuge the entire time I've known him, there may be secret exits we are unaware of. I don't want to give that rat the chance to escape... We'd better consult my mother and get her to rally the guards after him."

And so, after a short walk, you all return to Silverhall with your mission completed. Dame Sarrona, greets her son. "Thank goodness you've returned home! And who are your friends?"

Lander smirks at her weak attempt to cover her retrieval mission. "Nice try, mother. I already know that you sent them to get me. As much as I resent the implication that I can't handle myself, they did aid me in a time of need. I think I know why our business dealings have been so troubled of late. I'll explain more later, but first you should hear from them that acted as your agents in this matter."

And now it's time for the "report" part of the Pathfinder credo. Lander of course knows the story, but he's not a Pathfinder. =P

"We met with Marek and he directed us into the woods where he believed Lander had been hunting bandits. Thanks to our skilled trackers, we found his trail and eventually his abandoned camp. We were ambushed there by bandits, which we subdued. From there we were able to find the bandit camp, and subdue its residents. Their weapons bore an... interesting... mark." Fingalad trails off to let one of the others tell the rest of the tale.

"So we went out like you said and we found your son braving defending himself against some brigands. We helped out and defeated them. We noticed some signs that lead us to the bandit camp and once again fought alongside your son to defeat the bandits. We then noticed the bandits weapons bore the mark of Marek, the town smithy, which was peculiar to say the least but after discussing things over with your son we found out he suspected the smithy for some time and conspired to reveal the nefarious nature of Marek. You son was working to protect you and the town." Milythandyr blurts out.
