Please introduce yourselves to each other and me. What we see and who you are for example.

A blast of cold wind—the biting chill of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords— rushes into the tent, ruffling scattered papers but not Marcos Farabellus. The Pathfinder Society’s Master of Swords stares intently at a map of the western Worldwound, eyeing wooden playing pieces placed at strategic locations.

“Quite a party we’ve started up here. Did you know they’re calling all this ruckus the Army of the Open Road?” Farabellus asks, never raising his eyes from the map laid out before him. “Well, now it looks like this army is finally ready to move on Jormurdun, the lost Sky Citadel of the dwarves.” He motions to a spot at the far end of the map.

“In case you hadn’t heard, I’ve been appointed warmaster of this growing army of ours. The Decemvirate has politely asked me to knock on Jormurdun’s door and see who answers. The problem is, the walk there is going to take weeks and we know there’re some unwelcome residents already in the region.”

Farabellus points to a group of crimson-stained wooden tokens at the north-western edge of the Worldwound that stand opposed to the tokens of the Society’s forces. “It looks like the Society’s latest adversaries, that deceitful cur Tancred Desimire and the two-faced former Venture-Captain Thurl, have assembled an expedition of their own—and positioned it right in our path.”

Slamming his fist down in a sudden movement that cracks the table, Farabellus sends wooden pieces flying about the tent’s interior. “I’m done with these two meddlers. The demonologist and the traitor are to be brought to justice. But first, we must reach Jormurdun before they do. To that end, I need your assistance in rallying our armies and getting us to the entrance of the Sky Citadel. All our senior agents are out in the field tracking Tancred and Thurl, so I’m promoting you to act as field commanders for the battles ahead. Our allies are waiting to meet with us. Any questions?”

The squinted eye elf casually plucks one of the wooden pieces from the brim of his wide hat and places it gingerly back atop the table.

"What allies have we gathered? And what tips may you have to leading them? Large groups of people, especially ones all following me, is not something I'm... overly comfortable with." The mildly agoraphobic elf shudders at the thought of being the commander of ANY number of troops.

Intro!

"I am Celfwyn. Do try to keep bright lights away from me as it makes it quite difficult to concentrate. Usually I stay below ground in the dungeons of the archives." He speaks those words with longing and desire as opposed to dread and downheartedness.

"Normally I'd be mixing up the cocktails for this little adventure, but I do not think an alchemist's services will be needed for what is in store just yet. I guess the explosions will have to wait. But I do ask we keep a vigil eye out for any items Thurl or this Dessy-myre fellow may drop as we chase after them. Any item of power for us is one less for the-- ahhh, you get the idea."

A smallish gnome with wild hair enters quickly in a hurry from running.

"Well hello everyone. Sorry I am late. I am Wembletonian Horatio Aurturillo Templeton. But my friends, you can call me Wembly. I hail from the Sanos forest. Although I did not quite fit in there and traveled here and became a Pathfinder. I have a cat that has followed me from Sanos. Although I do not think he is really from the forest but beyond the First World. I call him "Whiskers". I never figured we would end up as part of a war band. "

You see this four and a half foot tall humanoid fox walk into the room. His reddish brown fur is catches the light ever so lightly and glows. On his back ins a quarterstaff that is almost as tall as he is. He slightly bows as he see the three people already in the room.

He greets everyone in broken common. "Greetings, Haro am I." he stutters a little "えとえと, meet you nice it is. Went to forest I did. Today back. Happy be here."

"He-he-hey! Dude, chill!" says the smugly grinning halfling, reacting to Farabellus's sudden fit of rage. His well-groomed hair and stylished yet streetwise clothing give out an impression of good taste, his stance always very fit for a model. Devon Callister, as he is called, never loses the smirk from his face. All the while he speaks he makes rather exaggerated gestures, swooshing his hands as if pantomiming the words he says. "Ya be destroyin' fine piece of carpentry here, buddy. Save ya anger to them Tancred and Turd!"

"So, uuh, right-o. Gonna get me an army, sound swell, yessirree! Any idea wha' size they be, just so I know what to wear, you know? Can't be in these ordinary rags, don't fit wit' troops and sorts! Oh right, cap'n, you've got some cannon from tha' Al Ken Star, right? Dibs on that!"

Resting his hand on the handle of his pistol (which he claims he built himself with no help at all), Devon starts pointing each other in the room, making a small gesture, and clicking his tongue on each agent. "Celfie, Wimbledon..." Devon pauses for a moment when he sees the kitsune. Obviously the first time for him. "Harrow. No humies yet, hah! No 'fence, Marco!"

I'll get my Season 5 chronicles added tonight some time.

In walks the most stereotypical elf this side of Kyonin. His armor, clothing, and exessories are all of traditional elven make. The only thing that stands in stark contrast is the sword of Minkaian make. As he takes a position over the map, the faintly bitter scent of spell components follows. His countenance is serious as he looks over the map, "Celfwyn asks good questions." He looks over his party mates and greats them each respectfully. If Haro is speaking Tian, that's how Druthane introduces himself.

Farabellus stands up from the table, as much to give his eyes and back a break as to answer Celfwyn's questions.

“We’ll be going over all the details in the war council, but we’ve assembled quite a host and need reliable Society agents overseeing each unit. Your duty will be to work together with a team of units and
crush any opposition Tancred and Thurl put in our way.”

“Over the past year, we’ve been gathering resources and setting up supply chains to bring us here. Now we’ve acquired assistance from the crusaders of Mendev and the dwarves of the Five Kingdom Mountains. Other smaller—but no less important—groups have joined us, and we’ll be meeting them at the war council.”
The specific armies deal with the season 5 chronicles brought to the table.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy

DC 15:
The Society has put together a massive host to march on the lost dwarven Sky Citadel of Jormurdun. Earning the nickname “the Army of the Open Road,” this force is composed of Society agents and allies from across the Inner Sea.

DC 20+:
Standing beside the Society are the crusaders of Mendev, consisting of mounted cavalry and trained battle priests. The dwarves of the Five Kingdoms Mountains have committed their siege weapons and hearty infantry after long negotiations with the Society. Both of these forces stand as the most loyal and largest non-Society
factions in the Army of the Open Road.

Devon has shown almost no interest in asking for local news or the Mendev expedition, and hasn't read a single chronicle. A prime example of a Pathfinder agent, surely!

"Right, forces! So uuh, when're we gonna go to dat war council? And are we on the offense or da defense?"

Any other Knowledge or Diplomacy checks? Remember it can be untrained. There are a few more DCs that I didn't list but so far no one has rolled that high :)

Farabellus turns to halfling and says, "Right now. Offense mostly. He brings the pathfinders to a much larger tent amidst the Society’s encampment. Within stand rows of benches and a massive wooden table adorned with token-strewn maps like those in Farabellus’s tent. Dozens of people already mill about, moving to sit as Farabellus enters.

The Master of Swords pays little heed to the other attendants as he gestures for the pathfinders to take a seat at one of the front-row benches. Once seated, Farabellus addresses the occupants.

“Friends and allies, I thank you all for coming to this most important of war councils. Our forces stand ready to march out from the Realm of the Mammoth Lords and into the treacherous terrain of the Worldwound, in search of Jormurdun. Know that this journey will not be easy, as dangerous enemies rest in our path.”

Warmaster Farabellus moves so all in attendance can see the map in the center of the chamber. Pointing at a group of tokens inscribed with demonic runes situated due east of the Society’s encampment, he continues. “Our first mission is to move out from this encampment and secure the region south of the Wolfcrags, where we know Jormurdun to be located. To ensure we are not flanked, we’ll need to destroy any enemy formations within the region around Silvershore, an abandoned town that the fiends are using as a base of operations.”

Knocking over demon-marked tokens with a wave of his arm, Farabellus haphazardly shoves the various tokens of the Society’s army into the region previously indicated. “With this region obtained, we’ll be well positioned to engage whatever Tancred and Thurl have waiting for us in the Wolfcrags. We’ll use the region around Silvershore as a forward command post and move north towards Jormurdun.”

“To ensure our success, I’m appointing my best agents as field commanders for the engagements to come. They’ll be leading our specialist units in crushing enemy resistance. They’ve not yet had a chance to select what units they’ll be leading directly, but I leave the decision in their hands. Please assist them by answering any questions you have about your formations and capabilities.”

With a nod, Farabellus looks over the assembled room, “This is it, everyone. This is the day we find Jormurdun and make Tancred and Thurl pay for their many treacheries.”

A mute halfling on a war-trained pony suddenly appears at the end of Farabellus' speech, trumpet already at his lips as he blows a Mighty Fanfare (.mp3)

Trotting in to the trumpet-cadence is a rather portly halfling in full plate armor astride a dark gray wolf, a bevy of weapons slung at his sides, across his back, and on his saddle. The symbol of the Flaxseed Clan features prominently on his shoulder pauldron, and a long blue cloak of the finest Taldan make streams behind him. When he speaks, his voice has the tenor and haughtiness of what you might imagine a Taldan "modern major general" might sound like.

"What ho! I am the Good Baron Horatio Flaxseed, Master of Fangwood Keep, Knight of Lastwall. Fear not, my fellow Pathfinders and hangers-on, for *I* have arrived!"

Pfft, what a show-off! Devon thinks to himself, seeing Horatio make quite an entrance. Nevertheless Devon looks cool as ever, nodding to Marcus's speech.

"Righto then," he says, turning the rest of the audience, "so wha' squads we got ourselves then, huh? These specialist units, as Marco said. Any o' ya tell me wha' they made of?" Devon points at several attendants, hoping someone would stand up and tell about the units' "speciality".

But also I'll throw them all out there:

Silvershore and the land to Jormundun?: Knowledge (Geography): 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 4 = 20

What do WE know of Tancred and his latest shenanigans? Nobility?: 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 4 = 24

What kind of leadership or shock troops have they been using? Engineering?: 1d20 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 4 = 17

"I'm not exactly a leader of soliders, but I will do my part. I'm eager to get in and see Jormundun for myself."

The extra +4 is from a Boon whose name escapes me know, but gives a +4 at knowledge checks at the start of a scenario.

Several Mendevian captains move about the tent. Many represent the cavalry, but there are also a handful of warpriests. Their excursions against demons are legendary and no one has more experience in the World Wound.

As much as the Mendevians have experience, the dwarfs of the Five Kingdoms have determination. Excited about recovering a lost Sky Citadel and devoted to the history it represents, their numbers show their commitment. It is easy to determine their battalions include pike-infantry and their seige engine corps.

The Pathfinders are representeted by groups of field agents and another bunch of enforcers.

The smaller groups include elven skirmishers, Black Fire casters, Taldan leaders, Mammoth Lords and even some Jitskin golem masters.*

*These require a chronicle & have limits. Anyone can choose the armies above.

A. answers on the map when I post it.

B.
Farabellus has no trouble spitting out the first part of the answer. “Tancred Desimire is a disgraced Chelish noble whose brother Aglorn was a fiend-binder and Aspis agent. After Society agents killed Tancred’s brother, Tancred swore revenge and revealed himself as a demonologist.

The second part of the answer starts and stops several times. You can see others in the room nodding their heads or hiding snarls as Farabellus speaks. "Thurl was once a Venture-Captain in Nerosyan, but he seems to have been influenced by the artifacts he collected from the Worldwound. We suspected his betrayal when he was conspicuously absent during the siege of Nerosyan, and we later confirmed this when Society field agents delved into his lodge and discovered the home of a demon-obsessed madman. Celfwyn nods at this, he knew a pathfinder involved in the mission. Farbellus tips his head in thanks to Druthane, as he explored the mansion himself. "These traitors have formed an unholy union and seek to reach Jormurdun before the Society in order to steal whatever knowledge they can.”

By quick glance the biggest problem I see is how luck-based it is. Since you only get one d20 roll on the offensive, it can go really poorly or with the right strategies and tactics you get to eliminate the opposing force almost immediately. It feels and probably plays like a board game, and thus I sincerely hope Paizo consulted professional wargame designers on making these rules to make them worthwhile.

Haro shrugs at Druthane request. "It be right me, you lead." Haro starts to tell Druthane about this adventure he went on at the blood cove. the scenario is, Before the Dawn—Part I: The Bloodcove Disguise. Do you need him to speak about it, or just tell you stuff, or is this okay?

We need a simple breakdown of the mass-combat rules...

Dark Archive

Male Elf Alchemist 5 | AC 17 T 13 FF 14 | HP 33/33 | F +4 R +7 W +2 | Init +5 | Perc +10 | Bombs 10/12 | Reroll: Not used

Mass Combat Rules Breakdown:
1) Roll high.
2) Roll higher.
3) Do the stuff.

In seriousness, here's a true breakdown::

Each day, or round, of mass combat consists of four phases. Start by rolling 1d10, and add your army’s Speed and your Charisma modifier to the result. This result is used like initiative to determine turn order.

Movement Phase: Move your army a number of hexes up to its Speed score. If you landed in an enemy army’s hex, combat begins at the end of this phase. Otherwise, you’re done for the day.

Tactics Phase: Choose one of the tactics available to your army. This modifies your army’s stats and performance.

Ranged Phase: Armies with ranged attacks can make a single attack before the opposing armies meet in melee.

Melee Phase: The armies meet in melee. Choose one of the five strategies to modify your army’s stats, then make an attack against one enemy army. Each turn you can change your strategy* by one step (such as standard to aggressive) for free or by more than one step with a DC 20 Morale check. You can also change your tactics with a DC 15 Morale check. The melee phase repeats until one side is defeated or has withdrawn.
* For more information on strategy, see the full Mass Combat rules linked upthread somewhere.

Special: You can opt for your army to rest instead of moving for one day. If you do, the army recovers a number of hp equal to its ACR.

Two of the pathfinders steps up to the halfling. "We'll do best when we can squeeze them. Just like we do in them forgotten-tunnels." Both mention this as a strength. One opens his coat and a pair of potions can be seen. "Not many armies can say every soldier has some the these.

As he is dissecting the choices, a mammoth rider moves to display his banner to the gnome: a leather skin stretched into the crook of a curving tusk. The wardens, have a more traditional banner. If the gaping hole that leads to no-where, limned in flickering, but heatless. flames of black can be described as traditional.

Farabellus points to the several lines of markers on the map. "We are well supplied once we begin." No. Consumption is tied to kingdom building so it is being ignored here. And PFS has a lot of support in place to represent this. Celfwyn's breakdown is about it. Just note the melee phase could be several back and forthrolling and that two armies might be in the same hex as an enemy army. So target choice is a factor.

"Indeed! Brilliant, yes!" These exclamations seem to be the most common erupting from the portly knight as he joins his fellow Taldans in reviewing the strategic maps as well as their tales of glory from other engagements that Taldor's Army of Exploration has engaged in. Baron Flaxseed seems quite at home, harrumphing in a very good-natured way with the other commanders of the Taldan forces.

Perception DC 10 to notice...:
...meanwhile, his herald Joffrey is stuffing his face with any pastry that can be found in the command tent.

Horatio will assume command of the Army of Exploration! Sorry for my delay in posting, but I'm back home now and ready to try this out!

Wembly is impressed with the immense size of the mammoths - so much so, he begins to think being small and underfoot might be a problem.

"I have more of a knack with summoning and extra planar beings, so I will throw my lot with the Riftwardens if that is ok with everyone?

He smiles and scratches his green planar cat, Whiskers, between the ears and hands him a treat from his belt pouch.

After everyone has a chance to meet the various captains,* Farabellus outlines the goals for the first engagement.

The lakeside settlement of Silvershore was once a thriving fishing town. Silvershore had the lucrative privilege of supplying a massive, floating pleasure palace known as the House of Reflections that floated near the middle of the lake. Many believe that the House of Reflections has become haunted and extremely dangerous. Scouts report that Silvershore is now fortified and serves as an outpost for demons.

By capturing Silvershore, the Society will not only eliminate an enemy stronghold but also secure a defensible forward camp. It can use this camp for its march on Jormurdun through passes in the Wolfcrags to the north. Cultists and murderers loyal to Tancred Desimire teem throughout the area.

*I was short RPing the NPC captains. Let me know what other discussion you would like to have. Now that the goals are announced you can pick your armies. If you still have questions about mass combat or armies please ask. I can even run a sample encounter if you think it would be helpful.

Haro looks at the remaining armies. "One I lead, which?" he asks for suggestions.

"Dunno whom ya could get," Devon says to Haro, "those banging 'bots would be real sweet, so either you or Druthane git one of those. And hey, we're marchin' towards this Worldwound, hear there be demons or such, those Mendevian dudes seem capable slashin' outsider blood!"

So I suggest picking either Jitskin Golems or Mendevian warpriests.

Farabellus nods in admiration and agrees with the gunslinger. "The city is fortified and the demon army has had a chance to settle in. The siege engines might also be helpful."
Golems are only available to those who have a chronicle for Fate of the Fiend (5-17)

Please note with the addition of the new map (THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU) and the scaling for tier I did some re-positioning of the enemy armies and your starting hex. If you make a move on the map please make an in character post here as well.

A question more for RP reasons...are we considered one of the leaders of our respective armies or just assigned as another member, scout, support etc? Profession architect...maybe useful in a siege but unlikely out in the wilds.

"You heard Ferrabellus, let's go find some of those crazy cultists. I think the birds suggested some may be not too far off in this direction. We should scout ahead. Maybe someday I will be a Riftwarden. . "

standard tactics. Move 2 hexes south east towards the cultists. Not sure if I am missing anything...consumption etc . Looks like it could be a bit before we encounter enemies .

Sorry, just posted in the discussion. No, I sadly do not have the relevant skills. Fitting that golems go last...

I don't think anyone got a lower initiative roll than the Taldans did - spent the night before departure boasting in their tents about how many cultists they would each slay...so let me know when you want me to go (initiative = 3)
